Ooh, I liked this a lot. Very hot. It has been probably close to 10 years since I read Jane Eyre, so I can't say how close your characterizations were, but they felt good to me. This was very beautifully written. Thank you!

I had to read this because it's Jane Eyre and I can't imagine many people not having felt that sexual tension between Rochester and Jane especially with the whole little fire incident (my my wasn't that foreshadowing?). I wanted to point out a couple of things, though: while the story is pretty all right, the characterizations are off. I guess they have to be when you're kind of doing an AU for this. As we know, Jane was ultimately correct in how she reacted to the news of Mr Rochester being married and it was her conservativism that protected her in the end. If she had stayed, she could have been harmed in the fire -- and if we look at that as foreshadowing it could have been an allegory for hellfire as well since she'd have been sinning to marry a man who was already married. This is why she left -- she could not stay there with Edward a temptation that she could not have for herself. It was wrong, she knew it and she did what so few women today could do. This makes her a STRONG woman, not weak or stupid as your synopsis implies. Conservatvism is really about protection and learning from past mistakes. Sure, it wasn't easy or fun, but it was the best thing for Jane to do and it was morally correct and protected her from all sorts of bad things. So of course in your story she would not have stayed there had she known about Bertha as you have her do. And the bit with the candlestick quip from Edward was just funny (i hope you meant it to be because I did laugh!:) I think it's great to imagine what might have been, but hard to do with these characters.

Lovely! I really like it. It sounds like the original (well, excpet certain words, which of course don´t appear in a Victorian novel...).

That was really quite nice. As far as I remember it, you've done a good job of keeping in with Jane's tone in the book. All in all, pretty impressive.
