My name is Tobias.
I have lost more loved ones than you could possibly imagine.
My girlfriend of five years has been dead for three.
My father died before my eyes. He was eaten by my worst enemy. Visser Three.
My mother was raped and tortured to death.
My best friend Ax has been taken over by The One.
My best human friend, Jake, was shot in front of me. I got a nice mouthful of his brains right before he ate the 12-gauge buckshot. Cassie suffered the same fate. They did it like that on purpose: Jake would watch his wife die, I would watch my best human friend die. Have you ever been soaked in the blood of two of your best friends? I thought not.
We were standing on the bridge of the Rachel. Jake had just spoken those last dreadful words.
“Ram the Blade ship.”
I watched it get bigger in the view port. Watched as it grew, rate increasing, distance decreasing. This is what Rachel felt, I thought to myself. She knew she would die, and she had resigned herself to the fact. I wished I could do that. At least I’ll see her again, I thought.
I could see the people in the tiny windows of the Blade ship. I could see my firend in the view port, kind eyes turned to evil. It like the gaze from Visser Three, only more. More malice. More pure evil. More hatred in that look than I have ever seen anywhere else.
And then…
White.
Everything white.
I was a human.
Not a hawk.
I looked around, saw my friends around me. Marco, Jake, both looking as bewildered as I did. We’re dead. I looked frantically for Rachel. Nowhere. Maybe she’d meet us later. I felt joy fill my heart. Maybe she didn’t make it here. Then dread quickly took over. How many people has she killed? How many died by her hand? Maybe she wasn’t in heaven at all…
Then Everything went black. I turned to Jake and Marco. Marco’s lips were moving, but no sound came out. None needed to: I could understand him perfectly as his lips moved.
“What the fuck?”
I turned around and saw her.
Blonde hair. Tall. Blue eyes. Pure beauty. Rachel was walking towards me. I tore my eyes away, looked at Jake, wondering if he could see her too, or if I was just crazy. His eyes were wide. His mouth was open. Water freely flowed down his face. No. I wasn’t crazy.
My heart broke in two. I hadn’t heard her voice in three years. I didn’t even notice how naked she was now. The last time I saw her she was a handful of ashes in a jar that I kept at my nest under the chimney in Hellenic College in Boston. The time before that she was eviscerated by a polar bear before my eyes.
And yet here she was, perfect flesh that I had dreamed about and yet never gotten close enough to touch, though we both had wanted it. We wanted to get married, we wanted to have children. But we had never gone farther than the very occasional passionate kiss. She looked at me. She ran to me. She called my name.
“Oh Christ! Tobias!”
I ran to her, still unaware of her nudity, took her into my arms, plunged my hands into her golden hair and kissed her deeper than I have ever dreamed of doing. I looked into her eyes, thanking God that this was real, having trouble seeing her throught the blurry tears in my eyes. I felt the wetness on her cheeks, and I looked at the others. Marco and Jake were heading towards us, still amazed.
“Okay, what the fuck just happened here?” Marco asked. “Who are you? Ellimist? Crayak? Who?” He said, looking at Rachel.
Rachel couldn’t answer. Our lips were locked, and we were silently vowing that we would be together forever. Then she was forcibly removed. I saw Marco peel her off me, fury in his eyes. As sure as I was that this was real, he was sure that this was a trick. He spun Rachel around to look at her, didn’t see her fist rise to the side of his head, didn’t notice the blaze in her eyes until…WHAM!
Rachel’s fist connected to his right temple. I was about ready to jump on him, furious that he could possibly think this was a sham, for taking Rachel away from me again. Jake, always the arbitrator, came in between us. I clenched my fist, ready to take them both on, anything for Rachel, everything for Rachel, I would never leave her, could never leave her. I felt the hate flow through my brain and I raised my fist up, ready to smash in Jake’s nose when I stopped.
I didn’t stop, I was stopped. By something. By nothing. By everything.
THIS IS REAL MARCO.
STAND DOWN.
“Ummm… Ellimist?” Jake was two steps ahead of us. Rachel picked herself up off of Marco, walked to Jake, smiling. I now noticed that she was wearing clothes.
“Hey, cousin. Long time.” she beamed that beautiful grin I love so much. “You’ve been handling yourself.”
“No.” Jake said. “You are dead. You cannot be here. Even the Ellimist can’t resurrect someone.”
YES I CAN.
“Well, that clears everything up,” Marco said.
BUT I HAVE NOT.
“Okay, now my brain is fucked again.”
“Your brain has always been fucked, Marco.” Rachel said.
YOU ARE DEAD.
“Okay, things are clear again,” Marco replied. “Oh, shit, shit…”
“We can’t be dead! Cassie… Earth…” Jake stammered.
CASSIE HAS PLAYED HER PART. YOU FOUR MUST GO ON.
“Why?” Jake asked.
“Um… Jake?” Rachel started. “There’s something you should know about the Ellimist.”
“Oh? What’s that? That he’s a conniving little fuck that needs other people to do his dirty work? Too late. I already know.”
Rachel’s face turned white. “Jake, the Ellimist is God.”
‘Whoa, whoa, whoa. Um did I just hear the Ellimist was God?” Marco asked.
“I don’t believe in God.” Jake said.
THAT IS WHYY I INTRODUCED MYSELF TO YOU AS THE ELLIMIST. YOU ARE CAPABLE OF BELIEVING WHAT YOU CAN SEE OR TOUCH, JAKE. THAT IS YOUR WEAKNESS.
“How did Ax know what you were when we first met you?” I asked.
DID YOU THINK I ONLY EXIST ON YOUR PLANET? I CREATED EVERYTHING, NOT JUST YOU. I CREATED HUMANS IN MY IMAGE. THE OTHERS I CREATED ALSO. I AM KNOWN BY MANY NAMES, ELLIMIST TO THE ANDALITES, RJA-AKOR TO THE HORK-BAJIR, FYAT/EMRO TO THE YEERKS. I HAVE OVER A BILLION NAMES.
“So all this time you said you didn’t interfere directly with humans, you were full of it, right?” Jake asked. I frowned. Usually Marco was the skeptic, but he was silent.
“Jake, dude, it makes sense. God never came down and did stuff himself . He made himself known to someone or something and then let them choose what they wanted to do. If they said no, I guess he just went to the next person. The last time he did something himself was the pla plagues. The next thing he’ll do is the end of the world. But he made a covenant with David that you wouldn’t interfere directly, didn’t You? You came down to Elijah, and Elias, and Abraham, St. Catherine, Joan D’Arc, but they did things themselves, for the most part. We’re your prophets.”
I looked at Marco, amazed. So did Rachel, but she just smiled and nodded her head. I caught her eye, and she winked.
God was silent for a very long time. None of us dared to speak. Finally…
YOUR WORK IS NOT DONE. I AM BREAKING THE RULES SO THAT YOU MAY CONTINUE.
“Continue what?” Jake asked, much more humble now.
FIGHTING.
Rachel was smiling her ass off, now. She was in on this. She knew what was going on. And, if I knew her as well as I thought I did, she had already decided.
“Let’s do it.”
déjà vu should never be painful. But the pang of fear for her that I felt as she said those words was almost unbearable. But if she wanted to go back I would not stay here and wait for her again. I would follow her forever. I took her hand, felt her skin, so smooth, looked at her.
“If you think you are going without me you’re fucking nuts.” I smiled.
“Well, I’m not going to be the one to defy God, but continue fighting who?” MArco asked.
THAT WHO YOU HAVE JUST DIED FIGHTING
“So we just got killed fighting this guy, and you want us to die again?”
I AM GIVING YOU A SECOND CHAN HOW HOW YOU USE IT IS UP TO YOU. DECIDE NOW. I WILL ELABORATE ON YOUR MISS LAS LATER.
“Is Cassie…” Jake began.
CASSIE’S ROLE IN THE WAR IS OVER. SHE WILL NOT PARTICIPATE IN THIS SECOND FEUD. ONLY YOU.
“So she’s safe?”
AS SAFE AS A CIVILIAN CAN BE. HOWEVER CIVILIANS ARE OFTEN KILLED IN WARS.
“Wonderful.”
YOU MUST DECIDE.
“Yes,” Rachel said. I nodded, and Marco followed.
So did Jake.
WHO SHALL HARNESS THE MEMORIES OF THIS? ONLY ONE OF YOU CAN REMEMBER THIS TRANSACTION. THE REST MUST FOLLOW ON FAITH.
“Yeah, I’ll do it.” Marco said. I did a quick double take. Marco never volunteered unless he had to! “Who am I to not take this? Besides, it sounds like fun.” He smiled.
BEFORE THIS IS DONE, KNOW THAT EACH ONE OF YOU MUST CHOOSE ONE PERSON TO FIGHT WITH YOU. JAKE IS EXEMPT, AS HE ONLY KNOWS CASSIE. TOBIAS IS EXEMPT BECAUSE HE KNOWS NOONE. EREK REMAINS CIVILIAN. YOU MUST CONFRONT THEM AS SOON AS YOU RETURN.
“Will they believe us?” Rachel asked.
I WILL MAKE THEM BELIEVE.
“Okay, lets do it!”
And with that we were thrust back into humanity and I forgot everything.
I woke up in my human morph, sitting on the roof of Hellenic College. How long was I up here? Was I in human morph for over two hours? Was I a nothlit again? How did I demorph in the first place? I morphed back into my normal shape, my hawk shape, ready to face yet a
nother day with a hole in my heart.
