Wendy waded into the cool clear waters of the lagoon and took a slow deep breath of the sweet scent that was Neverland. This was what she had been missing, she thought; this was her own personal Utopia. Although she was now almost 20, Wendy's strawberry blonde hair and twinkling eyes still retained the youth that she possessed long ago, but the coltish lines of her girlish figure were gone. Though she yearned to escape back into the halcyon days of her youth, she was no longer the same naïve child that first visited the childhood paradise. She knew that this trip to paradise would be short lived, however she was determined to make this one last visit a memory that would warm her on the cold winter nights that would come upon her return. Peter had spirited her away from one such night only last evening.
The night before.......
Thankful for a long-winded toast by an inebriated houseguest, Wendy had taken advantage of the lull in the festivities to escape upstairs for a moment of peace. Knowing that her mother or her aunt would soon be looking for her to force her to return to the crush of the soiree below, she skipped past her bedroom to approach the door at the end of the hall, the door to the same room she had spent so many childhood days and nights in what felt like so long ago. She entered the room, padding softly over to the small bed which had been her own until she had turned 14 and become “too old for the nursery” as her mother had proclaimed. Knowing that her absence would soon be missed, she dared not loosen her bodice for fear that it would only be laced up in an even more constricting manner by order of her mother the moment she was located, which Wendy now believed to imminently approaching. Determined to shake the feeling of claustrophobia which had been clinging to her all night, Wendy walked softly over to the bay window, unlatching it for a breath of fresh air. “I don’t want to grow up” she whispered, gazing out into the clear black night. “Then don’t!” came a voice from outside in the darkness. A shiver thrilled up Wendy’s spine as she immediately recognized the playful tone of her childhood friend. “Peter, is that you?” She called out into the darkness. “Of course it’s me silly. Who else could it be?” came the cheeky reply as the youth slipped gracefully in the window. Wendy laughed to herself as she thought of the look of horror on Peter’s face when he realized she was now his height. Despite her protests that night, Peter had managed to win her over again and had convinced her to foolishly slip away with him to Neverland, just as they had so many times in her childhood. Eager to escape the endless parade of marriage-minded dreamless young men, Wendy had agreed to go for one last visit to the place that time seemed to have forgotten. Now, rather than readying herself for yet another night of repetitive dances and droll conversations, Wendy was shedding all but her shift to join the other lost boys in celebrating her first day back by taking her for a cooling swim in the lagoon. She allowed her mind to drift as she floated aimlessly in the crystal waters, listening to the sound of childish laughter and play. Her body began to relax as she let the stresses from “grown up” life seep out of her while the Magic that was Neverland brought her back to a time when none of those things mattered. For now, she thought, she would let her mind be free. All around her, the boys continued to splash, jump, and dive into the water from various rocks and trees. Peter had been lounging on a branch high above, only an amused spectator, until one of the other lost boys managed to splash water high enough to get him wet. Peter immediately launched off the branch and dove into the water below, dunking the boy and sending a wave of water over Wendy. Laughing and sputtering, Wendy surfaced to find Peter laughing at her, a large grin on his boyishly handsome face. Although Wendy thought for a moment that there seemed to be something older, something wiser there in his gaze, there was still much of his childish innocence and optimism there. Wendy felt a slight pang of regret, as she was beginning to think she might have lost that during her time back in the real world. There was no denying that Peter showed signs of becoming a very handsome man, but it was this youthful attitude and confidence that helped to remind her that he was still just a boy. He had not yet experienced the bare and ugly reality that was growing up. No, deep inside, Peter was still just a boy who thought life was just a game, and she just his playmate. Although she wished that somehow his innocence would rub back off on her, Wendy knew that life was much more complicated than that. As much as Wendy wished to remain with Peter in this blissful spot forever, only pretending at being mother and father to a group of unruly boys, she knew that would eventually have to return to her life where this would all be just a distant but beautiful dream. In that world, she needed the companionship of someone who could see and know even the most tarnished and cynical spots of her soul, someone who understood and even shared her bitter disillusionment with the political games and social intrigues that was society. This little vacation from life was just that, a simple vacation. Only too soon would she have to return to the responsibilities and hassles of the real world. Marriage, family, money, responsibility: all were in her future. She could only dwell temporarily in this world that represented her past. “But dwell I will” she thought, determined to hold on to this little bit of heaven even for only one day more. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
