Summery: Catti-Brie meets meets an old enemy on the road and interesting things happen. This started as a joke, but became, weirdly enough, kinda serious. No one is more shocked than I. Warning! This does get fairly graphic, so if you are offended by this sort of thing or, worse, underage, GO AWAY! First fic of this nature, so please, please review, even if you hate it!
Chapter 1.
The inn, Fading Twilight, was a small one, located where the suburbs of Silverymoon thinned gradually into the surrounding hills, shadowed amidst scrubby cedar trees and hulking cliff faces. The dark and faintly brooding theme of the locale was carried into it''s interior. The few patrons, a clientele not known for their gregarious natures, huddled in small knots around the bar and various tables scattered around the common room, smoke shifting like hazy veils between them.
One of these visitors, a woman, stood among the shadows surrounding the staircase that led to rooms overhead, watching two of the other patrons with a heated intensity. This woman was slim and tall, with wide dark blue eyes and long auburn hair that fell softly down her back in heavy waves. In her early thirties, with an athletic build, she was undeniably attractive, though no longer the lovely young maiden of times past. Normally the epitome of calm and collected in difficult situations, her stance and expression betrayed a sudden lack of composure at the sight before her.
The objects of her unwavering scrutiny were a drow elf and a human who occupied a small table opposite her in the common room. These two made a striking and altogether disconcerting combination. The elf was ostentatiously attired, with a brilliantly coloured cloak and an immense hat ridiculously feathered. All of his movements were animated; his fine featured face expressive as he flirted loudly with the bar wench. He seemed oblivious to the fact that his heritage marked him as an object of instant fear to those around him, and that they might actually afford him some hostility for simply being there. In turn, his own apparent ease in his situation seemed to put the other patrons of the inn off their guard. They watched cautiously but with amusement, as though viewing a strange and exotic animal performing at a safe distance.
His companion, the human, made a stark contrast. This one seemed to draw the very shadows from the air around him as a concealing cloak, his eyes as black as a widow''s veil and every bit as desolate. He wore an air of wary watchfulness, dark eyes continuously scanning from side toe ine in a face that betrayed no hint of the thoughts within. His movements revealed a dangerous and restrained grace that suggested he was much more than the weary traveler he appeared to be.
Catti-Brie couldn’t believe the trick fate, capricious bitch that she was, had played on her. To come upon these two now, when she was traveling alone was the worst of her recent string of bad luck. Catti sighed and pressed back against the wall, willing herself to become one with the gloom around her. The last several months had been very trying for her, and she felt as though she didn’t know her place in the world any longer. Her friends, it seemed, were all leaving her. Though she was happy that Wulfgar was at peace with himself once more, she nonetheless felt a pang of sadness when she learned that he and Delly were expecting their first child together. Her painful realization that there was something missing in her own life grew daily as she watched the joyful couple together with little Colson, experiencihe whe wonder of Delly''s advancing pregnancy. Did she want to have children of her own? Were her own accomplishments enough, or did she need something more in her life?
Adding to her growing feelings of unfulfillment was the fact that Drizzt, so long a constant in her life, was off learning what it really meant to be an elf with Innovindil. Catti didn’t know what these lessons entailed, but she did know that Drizzt had distanced himself from her since they began, which left her alone with even more unanswered questions. While Drizzt had all the time in the world to figure out who he was and what he wanted to do with his life, Catti was all too aware that she was fast approaching middle age. Is this what a mid-life crisis feels like? she wondered. The thought of children with Drizzt, while at first appealing, brought about a whole new set problems. Problems, she was beginning to realize she didn’t have the time to try to solve with the absent Drizzt.
And so, with this growing sense of oppression weighting her, Catti-Brie had taken to the road by herself. The need to be away, to clear her head, to come to some resolution was overpowering, though what answers could possibly await her on the road she couldn’t fathom. Nonetheless, she sensed instinctively that somethinomeoomeone indeed waited ahead for her, and that together, they would find their answers.
Yes, and what wonderful instincts you’ve proven to have, fool! Here you stand, stuck in this rat-hole of an inn, with Artemis Entreri and Jarlaxle between you and the door! Catti''s mind worked furiously. Perhaps she could wait them out? The area she was standing at, against the side of the stairway, was in shadow for the moment, but it wouldn''t be long before the gathering twilight drove the barmaid to begin lighting candles. She could edge her way along to the foot of the stairs and return to her room, but how to do so without drawing attention? She could move subtly, but from the wary look on Entreri''s face, she sensed it wouldn’t be subtle enough. It seemed he already felt himself being watched. Catti sighed again, feeling fear begin to coil itself around her heart. No one and nothing brought such a thrill of horror to her as did Artemis Entreri. A thrill of horror and something more, perhaps? Catti dismissed that thought quickly.
At that moment, a large and noisy party entered the inn, flooding into the common room and obscuring Catti''s view of Entreri and Jarlaxle. Here''s the chance you need! her slightly panicked thoughts screamed at her. Catti moved jerkily out into the common room, bolting towards the door and silently praying that the momentary confusion would cover her escape. The noise abated somewhat and Catti saw the inn door right in front of her. Rushing out the portal, she sighed with relief into the chill air of the glowering sunset.
And then she felt it, as enevitable as death itself, the comforting coolness of a blade pressed familiarly to her spine. Catti felt herself be spun around and shoved back into the shadows that gathered along the side of the inn. Knowing only to well that a struggle would be futile, she let herself be slammed into the ungiveing stone and felt his familiar heat contrast with the cold steel now at her throat. Catti stared with big, unblinking eyes at the man who haunted her deepest nightmares. Entreri, in turn, glared at her angrily, expectantly, as though to discern her purpose from scrutiny alone. For a long moment they stood thus, frozen in a brief eternity of seconds. Then, the man spoke, "Why are you here?" he asked incredulously.
Catty opened her mouth to answer, with no idea of what she would say. "I…." At a loss, she stiffened, and felt the blade press closer. " ''Tis mere chance" she explained, forcing calm into her voice. "I was not seeking ye. It was mere chance that we came upon eachother." Closing her eyes, she tried to calm the painful pounding of her heart.
Entreri''s quiet laugh sliced through the chill air as deftly as his blade could part flesh. "Well then, my mistake," he whispered sarcastically, "By all means, continue as you were." Lifting the dagger from her throat, Entreri teasingly stroked the flat of the blade along Catti''s cheek. The oddly sensual sensation sent an involuntary shudder down the woman''s spine and forced her eyes open in shock. She saw the lie in his words then as he pressed her closer between his body and the wall, not loosening his hold on her for a moment. "Now," he snarled, "I want the truth!" The implied violence in Entreri''s tone was unmistakable.
"Ah, what have we here?!" a cheerful voice called out from behind the two. Catti watched as Entreri''s features twisted in irritation and looked over his shoulder to see Jarlaxle, giggling barmaid in tow, standing behind them. The drow gestured for his companion to stand a distance off and approached the two alone. His handsome face lit with recognition as his eyes fell on Catti. "Why Artemis, it seems you''ve run into an old friend!" Jarlaxle beamed at her, "What brings you out this way, my dear lady? "
Is the bastard completely blind to the fact that his friend is about to slice my throat?" Catti thought furiously, not daring to answer the drow''s question herself.
"That’s what I was trying to discern before you interrupted!" Entreri hissed. " Of course, I expect no truth out of her."
A sly look came into Jarlaxle''s eyes as he studied the two. "Hmm,''" he said, as though he were considering something of great import "The reasons she might be following you are countless, and none of them good. I think it highly important that you discover these reasons." Jarlaxle looked directly into Catti''s eyes then, his expression becoming amused as he took in her outraged glare. He is purposely feeding Entreri''s paranoia! He knows I wasn’t following them! To think that she had once thought of Jarlaxle as something of an ally. The drow continued, "I think a thorough interrogation is in order, but this is certainly not the place, my friend. Take her up to the room, where you can question her at leisure." Jarlaxle smiled at the two smugly.
Entreri watched the drow suspiciously, knowing full well that he was up to something."A good idea" he said mesuringly, " But won''t you come and help?"
Jarlaxle laughed suddenly." No, no, I have my own "Interrogation" to perform." He tilted his head toward the waiting barmaid. "I''m afraid you two are on your own in this. " Jarlaxle, laughing still, turned and walked off into the night.
Entreri, eyes narrowed at the drow''s insinuation, turned back to Catti. Though he certainly had no intention of doing as his companion suggested, the drow did have a point. The privacy of the inn room would be a better place to discover the woman''s purpose in being here than out in the cold night air. " Come with me, " theassiassin instructed, "Act natural and don''t make a scene, you know I hold no qualms about killing you in a room full of people!" He calmly slid his dagger into its sheath and took Catti by the elbow.
The woman, a sense of unreality stealing over her, found herself being led back into the inn and up the stairs. Why don''t I fight him? I am a warrior in my own right! she thought frantically. He is only a man! Why am I allowing myself to be led like a frightened child?!! The truth of the matter flitted along the edge of her awareness. I am here because I am allowing myself to be led to this place; I am consenting to it. The shock of the realization was banished with the sudden click of the lock behind her. Alone in the room, the two turned to regard eachother. "Sit down ." Entreri commanded, gesturing to the single chair in the room. Catti sat. The man paced the length of the room a couple of times, glancing towards her as though struggling with indescion. Catti took the time to study the man before her, compare his present incarnation with her memories of him from the past. He was still deceptively small, and even his slightest gesture displayed a grace that should haeen een beyond a human''s skill. She recalled now their first fearful meeting and remembered that her initial impression of him had been of a handsome man, save for the desolation of his eyes. Now a decade older, Entreri was still a handsome man, and her own added decade of experience had given her the ability to look beyond surface appearances.
His eyes, blacker than the deepest depths of underdark, held any number of demons, carefully restrained with and iron mask of self-control. What put those demons there?, she wondered, and what might it take to exorcise them? Entreri''s sudden question startled her from her reverie.
"Did Drizzt send you?"
" Drizzt?" Catti''s eyes widened.
"Of course I know he''s not really dead." The man stared at her hard. "Jarlaxle''s ruse did not fool me. I know he still lives."
"No," Catti answered tiredly, "Drizzt is through with ye, just as ye should be with him." A flash of rage briefly contorted Entreri''s features as he moved towards the seated woman. Standing before her, he didn’t bother to draw his dagger again, allowing physical proximity to make his threat for him instead. Catti dropped her eyes, unable to bear the force of Entreri''s stare. Grasping her chin with more gentleness than she would have expected, the man pulled her to stand before him and meet his eyes once more.
"The truth, then." he said quietly. "You''ll not leave this room until I hear it. Why are you out here alone with not a one of your loyal friends beside you?"
Catti forced herself to hold his stare, reliving the last few months of her life in her head. All of her loneliness, all of the doubts and questions and pain she saw reflected back at her in those black surfaces. Slow tears began to run down her cheeks. "I tell ye, it was mere chance!" Catti sobbed. "I''m not lying to ye! I wanted to be away, to find me own place!"
Entreri continue to watch her skeptically. "Explain!" he demanded coldly.
Catti drew in a hitching breath and began. "Wulfgar has his own family now, his own life, and there''s little room in it for me. Drizzt also, is finding his own way, and not with me. Me da loves me I know, but he is a dwarf after all: what does he really understand me life?" Catti''s explanation was gaining momentum, she sucked in a quick breath and continued." This life of adventure is all well and good, but what is the fight for if there no home waiting at the end o'' the road!" Catti collected herself and hastily wiped her tears away. With carefully maintained calm, she finished, "I swear to ye, chance only led me to ye, I was not seeking ye."
Entreri continued to stare a moment, and then his lip curled with cold amusement. "How very touching." Dropping his hands from the woman he turned from her, as though suddenly uneasy in her presence A significant pause then. "Very well, you are free to go."
Catti gasped with shock "That''s all, ye''re letting me go?!" she whispered in disbelief. A curious feeling of disappointment began to fill her. Somehow, this seemed too simple.
Entreri chuckled "What do you expect me to do, kill you?"
"Well…"Catti started shakily.
"Contrary to popular belief, I don''t kill without reason."
Catti considered the dark-haired man''s back, his slender build revealing nothing of his true strength. Her earlier fear was draining away to be replaced with a strange and burning intensity. And, even more so, curiosity. Once, long ago, she had been this man''s prissoner. She had been alone with him and helpless, completely at his mercy. And yet, though he had scared the hell out of her, he had never once used the threat of sexual violence against her. She had feared for her life, but never once feared being raped. Was the man completely devoid of human desires and passion, or was this mere professionalism? Or, more interesting still, was their something else to him, hidden beneath the dispassionate surface? Catti felt an overwhelming desire to discover the truth of Artemis Entreri.
"And the other..?" She began slowly.
"What other?"
"What the drow insinuated down below."
The man threw her a revolted look as he took in her meaning. "You must be delusional, I''d rather kill you than force myself on you."
"Well, ye said ye wouldn’t be killing me, right?"The woman took a measured step toward him "And if ye wouldn’t be forcing me…. would ye then?
Over his stillness, Entreri froze. "Have you taken leave of your senses?" he whispered, turning back to face her.
"It''s very likely", Catti replied, continuing her approach. She felt she was being pulled by a compulsion she was unable to resist. Slowly, carefully, she extended a trembling hand to Entreri''s face, the gentle caress taking him off his guard as no attack could have. He stared hard; trying to find words, but was silenced as Catti-Brie shyly pressed her lips to his. The assassin''s eyes went wide as he realized the truth of her intent. "You are insane." he gasped against her soft mouth. "What… what of Do''Urden?"
Annoyed, embarrassed, Catti pulled back from him. "Drizzt questions the why and how of everything!" she exclaimed. "''Tis truly an infuriating habit, so, if you''d be so kind, simply leave him out of this!" Catti glared at the man, anger lending her courage. "Do ye find me hideous?!"she demanded suddenly.
"No…."Entreri replied truthfully, taken aback and completely out of his element.
"And do ye like girls?", the furious woman questioned snidely.
"Yes." the assassin answered, his own anger returning. He glared at her menacingly, trying to regain control of the situation.
Catti however, was purposely baiting him. "How long has it been for ye then, Entreri?" She put on sultry look. "How long has it been since ye''ve had a woman?"
"None of your damn business!'' the furious assassin exclaimed, grabbing her by the arm.
"I''d say it''s been a bit too long, wouldn’t ye agree?" Far from trying to escape, Catti found herself pressing closer to the man. "Or are ye truly the cold, black-hearted bastard ye appear to be?!"
Entreri stared down at her in disbelief. After a long moment, he asked helplessly, "What do you want from me?"
Catti slowly ran her hand up the man''s chest, sighing in appreciation as the firm muscles tensed beneath her palms. Moving her hand upward to cup his cheek, she pulled his face closer to her own." I want ye not ask me any more bloody questions, and I want ye to put me out o'' mind of me own troubles." She brushed her lips hesitantly against his. "Won''t ye kiss me, ye fool?"
Catti watched in trepidation and a myriad thoughts seemed to flash across the man''s eyes at once. Then, the black orbs cleared; a decision was made. Entreri''s arms snaked around her suddenly, one behind her shoulderblades, the other behind her bottom, hauling her body firmly to his. Catti let out a soft, involuntary moan, her heart beginning to pound painfully at the sensation of heat and hardness against her. Kiss her he did, with no hesitance at all now that he had made up his mind. Catti brought her hands up and buried them into his thick, soft hair, its soothing darkness seeming to soak into her fingertips. His lips on hers were hard and demanding, his tongue penetrating, stroking hers and leaving her to breathlessly whimper into his mouth. Catti gasped as she felt his hand cup her breast, kneading it through the cloth of her tunic and a deep burning began build in her core, the muscles of her womb contracting almost painfully. Just as she felt her legs become unsteady beneath her, the strong arms tightened around her body, supporting her. Without breaking the kiss, Entreri lifted her, walking the few steps to the rooms'' large bed. Suddenly releasing her, she tumbled unceremoniously onto her back. Catti blinked up at him in surprise.
"Are you still sure about this?" he questioned, matter-of-factly and with more calm than any man should have possessed after such a kiss.
Catti nodded, not trusting her voice. She watched dumbly as he turned and carefully removed the dagger from his belt and sat it on the nightstand, then remove the unfamiliar, but magnificent sword and prop that there as well. She slammed her eyelids shut as he moved towards her again. She felt the bed give and started as his hand touched her right ankle. She realized with slightly hysterical amusement that not only was she fully clothed, but she still had her boots on. Some seductress I am! Entreri grasped the offending footwear and tugged it off, tossing it with a careless thump across the room, and then dealt similarly with the other. The warm hands returned to stroke upwards over her cloth covered calves, over her thighs, skipping the place she was most curious to feel them and up to her stomach, the callused palms stoking the flesh under her tunic. Catti looked up at him then, seeing him kneeling above her with his long hair in his eyes and still with that annoyingly calm look on his face. More than anything, she wanted to wipe that calm away. Siting up then, she moved to the edge of the bed and hastily removed her pants and jerked the tunic up over her head. Slowing herself, she twisted back around to face him on the bed. She was relieved to see fires light behind his dark eyes as they raked her nude body. Catti knew she had a beautiful figure, even if she was no longer a girl, and she saw with relief that Entreri was fully capable of appreciating it. Moving back to him, she pulled him to her and initiated another kiss. Entreri responded with incredible intensity but still without the urgency she had learned to expect with her other two lovers. Instead, he slowed their kiss, taking control of it as he let his hands explore her heated flesh. Catti herself fumbled shakily with the lacing of his tunic, trying to undress him. He pulled back and laughed at her quietly, the weight of his stare more intimate than any kiss they had shared thus far, and Catti realized his calm was not due to a lack of passion, but rather to its car con control. Entreri shrugged out of the tunic himself, then, in one quick motion; he pushed her onto her back and moved over her.
Catti''s overwrought nerve endings nearly wept with joy at the feeling of his bare skin beneath her fingertips. Meanwhile, her brain was suspended in a state of complete amazement. How did the day start as is did, and end up here, in bed with Artemis Entreri?! However, the sensation of his hands and mouth on her bare skin was quickly drowning out that inner monologue. Catti ran her nails over the smooth skin of his back, urging him incoherently to continue, then begging him not to stop. Entreri allowed her her exploration, but kept pace with his own, his lips at her throat now, strong and slender hands roughly grazing her nipples, making her arch against him. Then, he moved, sliding down her body and taking one nipple into his mouth, his hands stroking down over her stomach and sides, roughly caressing her, then pushing her thighs apart. Catti nearly sobbed aloud as she felt his fingers part her, the pure and liquid heat building as he stroked her intimately, spreading her growing moisture.
"Oh dears gods!" she gasped as she felt his fingers enter her.
He answered only with a soft chuckle against her breasts and then she felt his lips move lower again, kissing over her stomach and down to one thigh, then moving to the other and biting it none to gently.
Suddenly feeling rather shy, Catti struggled to sit up, but Entreri reached up casually and pushed her back. "What are ye doing there?" she asked, feeling foolish.
The man looked up the length of her body and laughed. "You don''t know? Catti shook her head, auburn locks bouncing on the pillow. "You''re not a virgin, are you?" he questioned. Again the head on the pillow shook. The assassin sighed, "Tragic!"
No further explanation forthcoming, Catti shut her eyes again and waited for what would come.
A/N: Okay, that''s chapter 1, there is probably one more and an epilogue or some such still ahead. You know, I''ve read a lot of fan fiction and I must say that they are a lot harder to write than they seem! Anyway, please review (insert groveling) even if you do hate it (and I expect that most Salvatore fans will loathe the pairing. Heck, even I do!)
