Pluie Calme (Still Rain)
Summary: This is slightly AU, but only so it can tie into the Anitaverse. This
takes place around Narcissus in Chains. Anyways, basically Chloe sneaks off to
St. Louis with Lex where he is having to conduct some meetings with the local
vampires there. It's explained why, sort of, in this chapter.
Future Warnings: This is rated NC-17, and heavily so. If any of you are one bit
squemish about threesomes, then turn around (M/M/F pairing/sex). Otherwise,
stay and enjoy.
Disclaimer: All Smallville characters belong to DC Comics and the WB. All Anita
Blake characters belong to Laurell K. Hamilton. I am in no way affiliated with
any of these; I'm just borrowing the characters to have some fun with them.
That is all.
Author's Notes: Thanks goes out to Beatrice from the NS boards for help on the
title and the French. Without someone to help me out with French this would
have never been written, and much appreciation goes out to her.
Day One
“Clark, over there.” Lex had finally appeared after waiting an hour, or more,
for him. Of course, he didn’t know that Chloe and Clark were both waiting on
him. One of his pilots had stepped off of his personal jet. Lex looked as
though he was engaged in an argument with the pilot. “I wish I could hear what
they were saying,” Chloe said in frustration while still hiding behind a rack
of luggage.
“Something about not enough room for the entire luggage.” Clark took a quick
look at Chloe. He knew that he slipped up, she knew it, but she decided not to
say anything. She just wished that he would tell her his secret himself so she
wouldn’t have to act stupid all the time. Besides, she was starting to run out
of snarky comments, something that she used to think was near impossible.
Their attention was back on Lex, who was currently counting through bills of
money and handing the stack to the pilot. He was paying him off, but why? Chloe
took the opportunity to sneak closer, crouching behind another rack of luggage.
She could hear Clark whispering her name behind her, making it clear that this
whole thing was her idea and not his. She could barely hear Lex and the pilot,
but she still managed to make out something about an agreement and St. Louis.
Chloe assumed that he was going to St. Louis, Missouri, but why?
“Chloe.” Clark was looking to the side of her. She turned to see what, or who,
he was looking at. One of the workers was heading her way, to the rack to get
ready to load it in the plane. Chloe tried to get away when she then realized
her foot was caught between something in the rack that she couldn’t even see.
Damnit. “Chloe!”
She couldn’t help but think that he was going to give them away if he didn’t
stop yelling at her. The worker started dragging the rack to the plane. He must
not have seen Chloe, which was a good thing. Maybe this way she could possibly
get inside the plane before it took off.
“Chloe!” Clark was running after her, normal run not super speed run. At least
he was smart enough to not use his powers in front of everyone. He was
almost to her when he suddenly looked constipated and writhed on the ground.
“Clark!” What was wrong with him? “Clark!” He was still on the ground, sick
looking and all. Now Chloe was worried.
The worker must have noticed all the yelling – who wouldn’t though? – Because
he was screaming obscenities at her. Chloe finally managed to loosen her foot
from her trapped shoe and took off. She didn’t know where she was heading to
until she ran into the staircase leading up to the opening of the airplane. She
took a quick glance over at Lex. He was still talking with the pilot, both
completely oblivious to what was currently going on. If she was going to do it
then now was the time. Chloe ran up the steps, ignoring the worker’s
protestations. No one was inside the plane yet, at least that she could see.
One quick glance behind her informed her that the pilot and Lex were walking to
the plane. She looked for the worker, the one who was following, but he was
nowhere in sight. Neither was Clark.
Lex and the pilot were getting closer and closer. She had to find somewhere to
hide and quick. She immediately noticed the set of curtains, probably a
separation leading to the bathrooms. It seemed to be the only possible place to
hide, so she went for it. There were bathrooms behind the curtains, to her
relief. Chloe quickly locked herself in one, where she could hear Lex saying
something to the pilot.
It had been at least ten or more minutes since the plane had taken off and she
was still sitting in the bathroom. Chloe wondered if she should go out and
announce her presence to Lex when a knock on the door interrupted her thoughts.
“Is there someone in there?” It was Lex; no one else had that voice.
“Just a minute.” As soon as she said it she knew it sounded stupid.
“Chloe? What are you doing in my bathroom?” Damnit, she was hoping that he
wouldn’t recognize her voice like she did his.
She had to answer him, but with what? I’m using the bathroom, just give me a
minute? No. “I’m hiding.” The truth was always better.
“Get out of my bathroom, Chloe.” Lex resorted to pushing on the door after a
few moments of her still not stepping out. “Chloe.”
“Okay, okay.” Chloe knew that Lex was going to find her eventually, whether she
had revealed herself or not. But this, this was strangely embarrassing. She
opened the door to what looked to be one mad Lex Luthor, with a touch of
amusement barely surfacing through.
“What are you doing?” His voice sounded careful, completely devoid of emotions,
like his expressions. He was putting up a mask, a wall to cover up his true
emotions. Chloe knew all of his masks; she was used to all of them by now.
“What are you doing?” It wasn’t much of a comeback, but it would do. At least
she had managed to avoid the answer.
“What do you mean? You are on my plane, hiding in the bathroom.”
“What are you doing taking meteor rock juice to St. Louis?” His shoulders went
from fairly relaxed to stiff. He masked another one of his business walls over
his other mask. He did have a lot of them. She had gotten his attention and she
couldn’t help but give herself a mental pat on the back. She was good, maybe a
little too good.
“How do you know about that?” Normally he probably would have resorted to
giving her a smirk. Apparently he found her investigations amusing, but not
this time. He was dead serious and truthfully it was a little scary.
Chloe tried to lighten his mood up with one of her smiles. It seemed to have
worked somewhat because his shoulders relaxed a little, not much, but it was
better. “My sources informed me of the explosion that had happened at
LuthorCorp a couple of nights ago. Then the investigative reporter in me
decided to check it out. You’re working on making some meteor rock juice to act
the same as cow blood.” He didn’t look happy that she knew this, but at least
she was greeted with his trademark smirk. She’d rather have him slightly amused
then royally pissed off at her. “Some of your scientists, the ones that you
probably didn’t pay off, seem to think that they’re working with human blood
instead of cow blood. Is that true, Lex?”
“Why don’t we make ourselves more comfortable, shall we?” Lex’s hand was at the
small of her back, trying to guide her through the curtains. Chloe had mixed
feelings about the hand at her back, good and bad. The first thought was he was
touching her and of how warm his hand felt through her thin blouse. The second
thought was that he might try pushing her off the plane, but she quickly vetoed
that thought. That way if she was going to die, she would at least be ignorant
of it, sort of. “Take a seat.” She noticed the leather, real of course, seats.
They were nice, expensive. Money was absolutely of no concern to Lex and she
couldn’t help but get pissed at the fact.
“Why are you taking this meteor rock juice to St. Louis?” Chloe decided to
switch back into full professional reporter mode now. She had to make this
sneaking around thing worth the trouble after all.
Lex sat directly across from her. There wasn’t much room between them, so his
long legs brought their knees touching one another’s. Chloe could feel a slight
flush to her cheeks; she hoped that it wasn’t too noticeable. “The Master of
the City in St. Louis contacted me with a problem. I’m taking the juice, as you
put it, to him personally. That is all.”
“Master of the City? Is that a way of making a mayor sound as though they are
royal, or something?”
“Have you ever met a vampire before, Chloe?”
“No.”
“They are real.” She knew that, everyone knew that since a court decision made
them into real human citizens. So what if they were undead, they were still
human, just prettier, scarier, and drank blood from the actual humans. “The
Master of the City could be seen as a mayor of sorts. Basically, other vampires
cannot enter a territory without permission from the Master of the City. Every
major city has one.”
“Why did he contact you?” She couldn’t believe she was actually having this
conversation. It seemed completely absurd, of course so was the court case
legalizing vampires.
“He wants to find a new way for vampires to feed without having to use humans.”
Lex relaxed a little in the seat, bringing his knees to press tighter against
her own. He didn’t seem to notice the contact, but she did. She definitely
noticed the contact. “Why are you only wearing one shoe?”
“What?” Chloe looked down at her toe-socks clad foot and noticed her lacking of
a shoe. She completely forgot about her foot being caught in the luggage cart.
“My foot kind of got stuck on one of your carts.” She took off her other shoe.
Yes, it was slightly weird to be barefoot on Lex’s plane, but now both of her
feet were bare instead of just one. “I had to get loose somehow, so I took my
foot out of my shoe.” She gave him a smile and received one in return. This
time it wasn’t one of his trademark smirks, it was an actual smile. Her cheeks
were becoming more flushed just from their knees touching and his smile.
“Nice socks.” He was smiling at her and she couldn’t help but stare at him. Lex
had a nice smile, when he was truly smiling, he just didn’t do it enough.
“Thanks.” Now, he was looking at her, her smile. There had been a time, much
like this one, where she would think that she caught him staring at her smile,
or just her. He usually tried to hide it by quickly changing the subject or
pretending to look at something else. Lex didn’t do any of those things this
time, he blatantly stared and he knew that he was making her slightly fidget in
her seat because his smile continued to widen. Chloe decided to change the
subject, “Nice plane, Lex.”
“Thank you, I’m glad you like it.”
“Nice, big, expensive plane.”
He wasn’t smiling anymore, instead he almost looked apologetic, “How is your
father, Chloe?”
“You and I both know that you don’t have to ask.” Her father was still
unemployed because no one will hire him. Even the places that he is
overqualified at won’t hire him. Chloe didn’t even know that there was such a
thing as being overqualified, and that being a reason not to hire someone.
“I’m sorry, Chloe.” Lex looked almost sincere, but she knew better than that.
She remembered when she took the truth serum that allowed her to bring the
truth out of everyone, even Lex. He said that Lionel was the one who fired her
father. She knew it was true, but what stopped Lex from hiring him back,
though? “I heard about your scholarship to Metropolis University.
Congratulations.”
“Gee, thanks, Lex.” It sounded sour, even to her, but she had good reason. “I
heard about the money you gave Lana for college in Paris. I don’t have to tell
you that I didn’t congratulate her.”
She was expecting him to say something stupid like Lana’s a terrific artist and
she deserved the money. Lana doesn’t even know how to draw stick figures.
Besides, if she was such a great artist, then why didn’t she get a scholarship
from the college? Instead, he asked, “Do you really hate me, Chloe?” He almost
sounded sad, almost.
No, she didn’t hate him. How could she? Despite all the things that he has
managed to screw her over with, she still cared about him. It wasn’t because he
saved her from death and all the other things that he had done for her. She
started to care for him before then, while working with him to take down his
father. She cared about the way he treated her with respect and his
appreciation for her will to investigate things instead of taking them as they
were. All of the little things that he would do, like when he stared at her
when he thought she wasn’t looking or when he opened the doors for her. He even
made sure that she had enough to eat that day, and if her answer wasn’t
satisfying enough he would take her out to dinner or order delivery. All of
those changed since she didn’t have to stay in hiding anymore. She didn’t know
why, but Lex never came around to talk to her, ask her for her help or
anything. And it hurt, really hurt. Chloe liked to think that she was strong,
and she was going to get over him because he clearly didn’t return her
feelings. She has learned from her past mistakes with Clark, she was not going
to drag it into something that it was not. “I don’t hate you. But, I don’t like
you either.” Maybe that was a lie, but she really didn’t care.
“I remember a time when that wasn’t true. Far from the truth.” She looked at
him, trying to figure out what he was trying to say. He didn’t return her look;
instead he pretended to flick an imaginable piece of lint from his shirt. There
wasn’t any lint on his shirt, they both knew that his shirts were too good to
have lint stick to them like everyone else’s does. She rolled her eyes at the
thought. “When we land you are going back home.” He was changing the subject.
She didn’t mind, because she really didn’t want to continue the conversation
either. Call her crazy, but she didn’t feel like breaking down right then and
there.
“What? No.” Lex gave her a serious look, a look that said that she was going to
do what she was told, end of discussion. She rolled her eyes. Men. “Forget it.
I’m staying.”
“Fine, but you’re going to stay at the Penthouse during my meetings. End of
discussion.” She expected him to argue with her. Tie her up. Do something
instead of that. She was going to argue against the Penthouse, but quickly
decided better of it. She was going to go to those meetings; Lex didn’t have to
know about it though.
“Okay, Lex,” she smiled.
When they arrived in St. Louis, Chloe expected Lex to have some guards hold her
down and drag her back on the plane. She was surprised that none of those
things happened. It was a relief, yes, but she was still skeptical. Lex was
still a Luthor and Luthors are not known as being trustworthy.
“Mr. Luthor.” A tall brunette, wearing a suit so tight she looked as if she
couldn’t breathe, walked up to him. She was wearing a pair of stylish reading
glasses. Chloe seriously doubted that she even needed glasses. She then
remembered that she was still barefoot. The embarrassment swept through her
like an uncontrollable force. Sometimes she really did hate being a girl. “Here
is your package, just as you requested.” The non-prescription-glasses girl shot
Chloe a dirty look before she walked off. If Chloe didn’t know any better she
would have thought glasses girl was jealous of her. She was the one that was
walking around barefoot, not her. What was there to be jealous of?
“Shall we? The limo is over there.” Lex motioned his hand, pointing out the
stretch limo. Chloe walked in front of him, still feeling embarrassed about her
lack of footwear. The driver quickly opened the door to let her in. She noticed
that he took a quick glance at her feet before she crawled inside the limo. No
one pays attention to others feet, unless they’re women, but the one time she
is barefoot everyone notices! Lex soon joined her; he chose to sit fairly close
to her despite the ample amount of seating. They were now heading to Lex’s
penthouse and the silence was awkward. The kind of silence when both parties
are trying to say something but are too afraid to do so. “This is for you.”
Lex held the bag that glasses girl had handed him earlier. “For me?” Chloe took
it from his hands. All she could do was stare at it; she wasn’t used to
receiving things, especially from Lex. The bag was paper, the heavy, high
quality kind. Its handles were made of silk ribbons. It was the kind of bag
that you see in really expensive stores, the ones that they put your purchases
in because the store is too good for normal plastic bags. She snuck a peek
inside the bag and saw what looked to be a shoebox. She quickly opened the box,
with as much delight as a child on Christmas morning, and found a pair of brand
new boots. “You bought me shoes?” Chloe couldn’t hide the excitement in her
voice even if she wanted to. They were of a dark brown color and made out of
real leather, of course. They went perfectly with the skirt that she was
wearing and looked almost like the ones that she was wearing earlier. Except
she knew that these boots hadn’t come from Payless.
“Do you like them?” He had tried to make his voice as steady as possible, but
Chloe could still detect a hint of nervousness in his pitch.
“Of course I like them! You just… you shouldn’t have…”
“I couldn’t let you go around barefoot, especially since it embarrassed you so
much.” Lex looked at her as though nothing else even mattered. Chloe could feel
the heat rising to her cheeks and she mentally cursed herself for it. “Try them
on.”
Chloe was more than happy to do so. She knew Lex was still looking at her as
she zipped one of the boots in place. She was nervous now, making her afraid
that she might catch her finger in the other zipper, or something else that was
equally embarrassing, or more. She could feel his stare burning deep inside of
her, tickling places back to life again. Somehow she had managed to get the
other boot on. “They’re a perfect fit.” When she turned to look at him, she
caught him quickly looking away, pretending to look at anything else but her.
She smiled at the familiar gesture, remembering when he used to do the very
same thing every time he was around her. Then she bottled up her memories, her
emotions, because deep down she knew that if she was to become the slightest
bit unguarded, that she would get hurt again. “How did you know my size?” Deep
down she knew that she shouldn’t have asked the question, but the reporter in
her wanted to know the answer.
“When you went to get some cappuccino, I looked at your shoe. The shoe size was
written on the bottom of it.” He wasn’t looking at her; instead he pretended to
look out at everything that was passing by outside. “I then called in the order
for new ones.”
“Thank you.” She was smiling at him, but it went unnoticed. Lex was still
looking out of the window. Without the slight shrug of his shoulders, Chloe
would have thought that he hadn’t heard her.
The rest of the car ride was in complete silence. It was so quiet Chloe could
hear every rattle that was produced from the air conditioner up front. She
thought she could pick up Lex’s heartbeat, but she thought better of it. Lex
probably didn’t have a heart anyways. Somehow he was able to make her happy and
then sad again in the time span of a couple of seconds.
“We’re here, Mr. Luthor.” The driver had the door open for them. Chloe hadn’t
noticed that they had stopped. Lex got out of the car before she did and
offered his hand to her for assistance. She took his offered hand and
immediately felt the shivers go up her arm. Chloe silently cursed him for
affecting her nerves and then she cursed her nerves for responding to his
touch. She quickly dismissed the tingling shivers as static electricity.
He led her inside the hotel, holding the door for her to go inside first. He
might not have a heart but at least he had good manners. Chloe knew that her
mouth was open, too far to be attractive. She checked her chin for drool and
thanked God there wasn’t any there. The floor was of a light colored marble;
the metallic streaks shimmered underneath the crystal chandeliers.
They were greeted by two attractive brunettes who were standing behind a
counter made from mahogany wood. “Good evening, Mr. Luthor.” They both said in
unison, completely ignoring Chloe. She was really beginning to dislike
brunettes. “Here is your key. Have a nice stay.” Chloe could feel their eyes on
her and Lex as they headed for the elevator.
When the doors opened, they were greeted by yet another brunette. Did this city
only breed brunettes or something? “Penthouse, Mr. Luthor?” She smiled at him
and did everything else but bat her eyelashes. Lex simply nodded and motioned
for Chloe to step in first. The elevator ride was slightly less as
uncomfortable as the limo ride was, but still too awkward for Chloe. She glanced
over at Lex; she just wanted to see what he was looking at, not to notice how
great he looked in that suit. He was watching the numbers as they lit up, one
after another. At least he wasn’t checking out the brunette. “Here we are.” The
brunette stepped aside to allow ample amount of room for them to exit. “Have a
nice night, Mr. Luthor.” She gave a quick smile at Lex and then immediately
directed a dirty look to Chloe before the elevator doors closed around her. Oh,
yeah, she definitely hated brunettes, especially the ones from here.
Lex didn’t notice the exchange of glances; instead he busied himself with the
key to the penthouse. He had the door opened and he turned to Chloe, he was
waiting for her to enter first. She wasn’t used to the doors being opened for
her, hands stretched out to assist her, and all the other little gentleman-like
manners that he was doing for her. She was used to Clark, instead, he never
held the door open for her, and he even walked into a room before her. There
were times when they tried walking into a room at the same time, but got stuck
in the doorframe.
She walked into the foyer, where Lex’s luggage was sitting. The floor was of a
darker marble then what was in the lobby. The walls were painted a deep purple,
with more blue than red mixed in. There was a bistro styled table and chairs in
between the foyer and the living room. The living room was bigger than the one
bedroom apartment that her and her father currently resided in. There was a
large platinum screen television that was placed in the wall, directly above
the stone fireplace. The lilac sofa was made of expensive velvet that felt
smoother than anything Chloe had ever touched before.
“You can take the bedroom. I’ll just sleep on the couch.” Lex’s voice made her
slightly jump. She was so enthralled with just the foyer and living room that
she almost forgot that Lex was there. Chloe turned around to look at him. He
was reading some documents that were placed on an antique desk in the corner of
the living room. The large wall-to-floor windows provided an impressive view of
the city lights.
“This place only has one bedroom?” Chloe was surprised that it only had one
bedroom; she figured it would at least have two. Lex just nodded and continued
to read the documents that were in his hands. “I don’t want to make you sleep
on the couch. It’s your penthouse, you take the bed.”
That must have gotten his attention because he immediately looked directly at
her. His face was shocked for just a second before he quickly masked it. “No,
you take the bed. The couch will be fine.” He made the words sound final,
informing her that she wasn’t going to argue her way out of it.
“Okay.” She decided not to argue, she knew she wouldn’t win. The curiosity in
her brought her to the dining room. There was a large dining table with high
back chairs placed underneath. It probably could have fit at least a dozen
people, if not more. Why would anyone need such a large table in a penthouse?
She then went further into the penthouse and found the entrance to the bedroom.
The walls were painted a darker shade of purple then the ones in the foyer and
living room. There was a large four-poster bed, with drapes hanging from the
rails above. They looked to be made of silk. Chloe touched the fabric and sure
enough they were made of real silk. The comforter was thick and fluffy, with
metallic gold embroidery designing small patterns in the sea of lilac fabric.
Chloe wasn’t for sure, but it looked to be hand-sewn embroidery, not machinery.
The comforter alone must have cost thousands of dollars. There were about a
dozen pillows at the front of the bed, ranging from large to small. Some had
matching metallic embroidery; others were of a darker shade of purple then the
comforter. There was only one word to describe the bedroom. Expensive.
Chloe decided to venture off to the bathroom. It was as impressive as the rest
of the place. It was laid out in black marble tiles, even the bathtub. She
noted that the tub alone could have fit about half a dozen people in it. There
were various sizes of jets built in the sides of it. The faucet was of a
linear, geometric shape, laid inside a pretty pattern of stones. There were
lace curtains framing the tub from the rest of the bathroom.
She got distracted from her touring by the sound of Lex’s voice. Chloe quietly
stepped out of the bedroom, and hid herself from view in the entrance of the
dining room. He was talking to someone on the phone, no names mentioned so far.
“Yes, eight-thirty. Guilty Pleasures.” Guilty Pleasures? That must be where Lex
was having his meeting at. Chloe walked into the room, she didn’t need to hide
anymore now that she knew where the meeting’s location was. Lex briefly glanced
at her. Surprise? Nervous? She couldn’t tell. He was masking his emotions too
heavily for her to tell. He quickly got off the phone, not even saying goodbye
to whoever was on the other end. Chloe hated that. Lex turned to her and smiled
for the first time since they had arrived. “I have to go now. If there is
anything that you need…” He took out his wallet and handed a few hundred-dollar
bills. “Feel free. If that isn’t enough, then just have the hotel put it on my
tab.” What could she possibly buy that would cost her more than three hundred
dollars? “Are you going to be fine here on your own?”
“Yes, of course.” She smiled at him, not her fake one but the real one. “I’ll
just keep myself busy watching the news or something.”
“Good.” He was about to head out the door, and then he turned around, “The key
to the penthouse is over there on the entrance table.” The door was almost shut
when he appeared behind it, not full body, just upper, “I’ll see you later
tonight, Chloe.” With that said he was gone.
Chloe decided to wait a few minutes before leaving the penthouse, just incase he
forgot something else that he wanted to tell her. She impatiently looked at the
antique clock by the foyer, waiting for the minutes to pass. After they passed
nothing happened so she grabbed the key with money in her other hand and left
the room. She was afraid that Lex might be waiting in the hallway for her or
still be in the lobby of the hotel, not believing her that she would stay put.
He wasn’t, though, to her relief.
She quickly called a cab. To her surprise the driver was an attractive female.
The driver was also a brunette. Big shocker there, Chloe thought bitterly.
“Where you headed to, hon?”
“Guilty Pleasures.” Chloe felt weird saying the title out loud, especially to
another female. She had no clue of what the place was, for all she knew it could
be a sex club or something, or whatever else vampires were interested in.
The driver motioned the taxi on to the highway. She expertly maneuvered through
slower vehicles blocking the road. “You and your girlfriends having a party
tonight or something?”
“My girlfriends?” That was an odd question. “No, I’m in town on a trip. Why do
you ask?”
“Oh, so you’re touring the place. That’s where all of the tourists go.” The
driver pulled onto another street, this one wasn’t as crowded as the last one.
“Really? Why is that?” Chloe couldn’t help but think that this brunette was at
least friendly towards her. Maybe she didn’t hate all brunettes after all.
“Hon, do you even know what Guilty Pleasures is?” Chloe shook her head to the
question, the cab driver continued, “It’s a strip joint. A male strip joint.”
Chloe didn’t have to look in the rearview mirror to confirm that she looked
completely shocked. Why was Lex going to a male strip club? She thought that he
was going there for his business meeting.
“It’s a real tourist attraction, mainly because of the vampires. It’s owned by
the Master of the City.” Oh! Chloe mentally smacked herself. But still, why
would a vampire own a strip club? “Some of those strippers sure are somethin’.
You know what I mean?”
Chloe had a mental picture of a bunch of Phabio-worshipping-chippendales, and
she had to disagree. “I guess I’ll find out.” She smiled one of her polite
smiles.
“Here we are, hon.” All Chloe could see was a dimly lit street that didn’t have
any designated parking spots. “Just walk around the corner over there and
you’ll see the sign. You won’t miss it.”
Chloe nodded her thanks to the cab driver and headed to her destination. The
driver was right. There was no way anyone could miss the sign. It was
neon-crimson red lips, with a pair of white fangs sneaking out from the lips.
Below it read Guilty Pleasures and directly below the sign was the
biggest bouncer Chloe had ever seen. Well, she never seen a bouncer before, but
she figured he had to be the largest in bouncer history. She nervously walked
up to him and smiled at him. The bouncer smiled back and flashed fangs at her.
She didn’t know if he was meaning to scare her or if he couldn’t help but flash
the fangs. “I’m here for the Luthor party.”
“Step right in, Miss.” His voice sounded like he had drunk gasoline and his
throat was on fire, if that was at all possible. Chloe then had to wonder if it
was possible for vampires to drink gasoline.
“Thank you.” She stepped through the entrance and was immediately greeted by a
brunette carrying around a tray. There was a nametag that read Holy Item
Check Girl. The girl held up the tray, asking Chloe if she was wearing
anything. It must have been to protect the vampires or something. “I’m not
wearing any.” The girl went off to greet the next female coming in behind her.
Chloe could only see an oversized stage that ventured out into the middle of
the audience area. There were red lights stapled on the edges of it, to show
where the edges of the stage were. All of the seats were taken up by a massive
population of females. There were very few males in the crowd. She then noticed
the bar that was far off to the side of the club. Since she wasn’t going to get
any seats in the main area, she might as well look for some at the bar.
When she took her seat, the bartender immediately came up to her and asked her
drink. “Water, please.” He poured her a glass of water and handed it to her. He
quickly noted that it was on the house before she started digging through the
change that the cab driver had given her. “Thanks.” She smiled then turned
around to face the stage. Chloe quickly noticed the large balcony that
overlooked the rest of the main crowd, allowing full view of just the stage. It
was an open aired balcony, adorned in some more red lights, probably
symbolizing drops of blood. She noticed the bald head that suddenly appeared
from the balcony, and then she got a quick glimpse of Lex’s face.
“How do I get up in the balcony over there,” she turned to ask the bartender.
“You see the narrow corridor over there? Just go straight and up the stairs.”
The bartender took her glass and gave her a wink. Chloe noted that he was kind
of cute, but not exactly her type. She smiled back at him before she walked
off. The men here were nice so far, unlike all of the brunette females.
She headed for the stairs; weaving her way between a lot of scantily clad men
who she assumed were the strippers. A blonde one, who was a little shorter than
her, whistled at her. Chloe rolled her eyes at him and went about her way. She
finally reached the top of the stairs, no more flesh in sight. Lights were
glowing around the edges of the door, framing it to look a little spooky.
“I’m afraid that you are not allowed in there, ma cherie.” The voice
sounded as it came from all angles of the narrow stairwell. It would have been
spooky if it actually sounded a little scary, but it was the exact opposite
instead. She felt as though she was drowning in those words, sleeping in
eternal, exotic slumber. It sent shivers up her arms, much like the way Lex’s
touch did to her earlier that evening.
Chloe turned around and caught a glimpse of long blonde hair, no, more like
gold instead of blonde. It fell down in long waves; she could see herself
running her fingers through the thick strands. The corridor was dark, so dark
the light only allowed her a view of half of the man’s face. She used to think
that Lex was the sexiest man she had ever met, but this guy. There were no
words to describe this man’s beauty. His eyes were of the palest blue, much
like a husky’s. No human had those eyes, it was impossible, they were so
beautiful. “Who are you?” Her voice was breathy and shaky. She tried to get
control of it, but she failed miserably.
The man before her was about to speak when she suddenly felt the door that was
pressed to her back open. Chloe tried to steady herself from falling, but
before she knew it, she was down on the ground staring up at the two most
beautiful men she’d ever seen in her life. Lex Luthor and Goldie Locks with the
killer, sexy voice.
“Chloe.” Lex looked angry and slightly amused. She couldn’t really tell since
he was guarding his emotions more than normal. “Chloe.” Why was he saying her
name over and over again?
“That is my name.” It sounded sarcastic, more than usual, and it got a laugh
from someone behind her, who she couldn’t see. The laugh was like Goldie Lock’s
voice, it moved around her, barely touching her, causing her to slightly
shiver. She’d rather listen to Goldie talk, but the laugh wasn’t bad. “I
followed you,” she refocused on Lex again.
“Yes.” No sarcasm, only recognition. Chloe didn’t know if she should be scared
or not. She could deal with sarcasm, especially coming from Lex. But
acknowledgment? Ultra coolness like he doesn’t care? No, she couldn’t handle
that.
“Are you hurt, ma cherie?” Goldie Locks was talking to her, she couldn’t
see him, but she knew it was him because of that voice. She felt as though she
was going to drown into that sexual voice, and she wouldn’t care either just as
long as it wrapped her in eternity. She could feel her head moving, then she
realized that she was shaking her head, answering Goldie’s question. No, she
wasn’t hurt, far from it. Chloe looked to the side, in hopes of seeing him. His
golden hair was falling into a pool of metallic paint on her stomach. It felt
cool through her thin blouse, and then she felt strong arms move around her. He
was lifting her up. She couldn’t help but do an internal giggle at the
sensation of having his arms around her, lifting her like she weighed nothing.
Her feet were planted on the floor now, and it took her a while to get pass the
blurriness of her vision. When she was able to focus on something, that
something was Lex. He was looking at her, nothing peeking through that stupid
mask of his. She had no clue what he was thinking right now and it unnerved
her.
Lex turned to Goldie, offering his hand for a handshake. “I don’t believe we
have met, yet. I’m Lex Luthor.” His voice was cool, complete in business mode.
His eyes were completely different, though. Chloe couldn’t tell what it was,
but she definitely wished that she knew.
“Mr. Luthor, please introduce me to your lovely friend.” Chloe turned to see a
very pretty, not handsome, but pretty man. He had long, slightly curly, black
hair that created quite a contrast against his pale, white skin. His features
were almost feminine, but not so much as to confuse him for a female. He was
definitely male, just a little androgynous looking. Chloe began to feel a
little insecure standing next to him, and immediately cursed herself for it.
Lex dropped his hand, rather hesitantly Chloe noticed, and moved next to her.
He didn’t allow any room between their touched bodies. It seemed as though Lex
was trying to claim her, but Chloe brushed the thought off as being idiotic.
“This is Chloe Sullivan. She’s a reporter.” Lex gave a polite smile at her; she
absolutely hated it, and then turned it to Pretty Boy. “This is Jean-Claude,
Master of the City.”
“Jean-Claude.” Chloe tried to stifle her laugh, but she couldn’t help it. Lex
gave her a dirty look, something that she thought he was incapable of. She
quickly got the hint, and acted as though she needed to clear her throat. “It
is very nice to meet you, Jean-Claude.” It was obvious that she had a little
trouble in saying his name. Chloe never tried so hard in her life to keep from
laughing.
“The pleasure is all mine.” He smiled at her and Chloe noticed that he had a
very lovely smile, but she’d rather see Goldie smile at her like that instead.
“Mr. Luthor, you must bring your reporter friend along with you for dinner
tomorrow night. I’m sure she will be a treat.” Chloe didn’t know if she should
be scared that a vampire just referred to her as food or not.
“She’s supposed to be leaving for Smallville tomorrow morning…”
“I am?” Chloe tried not to look mad, but she couldn’t help it. “You never said
anything about me leaving tomorrow.”
“Yes, well, I’m afraid you don’t have a choice in the matter.” His voice was
cold, like the one he used when the topic of who gets the bed had come up
earlier. Chloe didn’t care where they were at, who they were standing in front
of. She could care less if Mr. Pretty Vampire was the President, she wasn’t
going to sit there, or stand in her case, and be ordered around like a child.
“You are not going to order me around, Lex. If I want to stay, then I am going
to stay.” She matched his cold voice and expression. Chloe knew that she was
setting up a challenge, and she could feel her excitement grow with every passing
second.
“You absolutely must stay.” Jean-Claude moved in between them, probably in
hopes of preventing a quarrel. “I will not take any objections.” He looked at
Lex when he said this. Chloe couldn’t see him, his back was turned to her, but
whatever it was must have been scary because she saw Lex slowly backing down.
She’d never seen that before and it made her feel almost sorry for starting
this whole mess. “What do you think, mon ami?” Jean-Claude was looking
at Goldie now.
He was standing in the corner of the room, deep into the shadows. His lips, and
what wonderful looking lips they were, were slightly turned up into a small
smile. He must have found this whole scene amusing, and Chloe realized that it
was actually kind of funny. “The little reporter is sure to make a fun guest
for dinner.” At that moment, Chloe knew that she had a big, stupid looking grin
on her face. Goldie wanted her to attend dinner. Her grin widened at the
thought, she was acting like a school girl with a crush on a pop idol. She
didn’t even mind him referring to her as the little reporter.
“Of course, as long as she is fine with it.” Lex was clearly trying to giver
her an out. Well, he wasn’t getting rid of her anytime soon, so Chloe decided
to make him suffer.
“I will be delighted to join you tomorrow night.” She looked back at Lex,
satisfied with the evil look she got from him. They might as well have been
sticking their tongues out at each other; they were both acting so childish.
“Perfect.” Jean-Claude carried the "r" in perfect a little too much,
trying for a sexual affect. Chloe thought it would have been successful coming
from Goldie Locks, or even Lex. “You must excuse me; I have some business to
attend to.” He sashayed his hips as he moved to Chloe and took her hand in his.
It got harder and harder to sustain her laughter. “I shall see you tomorrow
night, Ms. Sullivan.” Jean-Claude placed a careful kiss on the back of her
hand. Chloe could feel a slight blush, but it was from the looks that she was
receiving from both Lex and Goldie Locks, not the actual kiss. “Asher will see
the both of you out.” He turned to Goldie Locks and then hurried out of the
room. Now Chloe could put a name with the pretty face.
Asher opened the door for the both of them. Chloe was the first to move, mainly
because Lex gave her a slight push. Asher then led them through the strip club,
having to pause once in a while to allow one of the members from the crowd to
pass by. The blonde who had whistled at her earlier that night was now dancing
around the tables, thrusting his naked hips in women’s laps. He must have
noticed Chloe because he was heading her direction. Chloe was looking for away
to hide herself, but it was too late, he was right beside her, thrusting his
hips around hers. Both Lex and Asher stepped in to block him from her, not
allowing him to continue his little dance moves on her. Chloe smiled at the
protectiveness from both of the men.
Asher whispered something to the stripper, and then he motioned for her and Lex
to continue following him. They were out of the club now, and Chloe never
thought she would be happier to see the midnight sky. No more thrusting bodies
and screaming women with lots of bills in their hands. Just the open street,
not a soul in sight except for the two men by her side. She had to admit that
she liked it that way, she liked it a lot.
Lex’s limo pulled up in front of them. Asher reached for the door before Lex
could. Lex just looked at him for a moment. He seemed as enthralled with him as
Chloe had been, still is actually. Asher turned to Chloe, his pale blue eyes
taking her in. She noticed that she was fidgeting a little underneath his gaze,
and then the heat started reaching her cheeks for the millionth time tonight.
“Until tomorrow night, ma cherie.” He held her hand as she climbed into
the limo. “Tomorrow night, Mr. Luthor.” After Lex crawled in next to her, the
door was shut and Chloe immediately missed the long, gold waves of his hair.
Damn, she needed to get a hold of herself.
The drive back to the Penthouse was quiet. Chloe could feel the hostility in
the air like a thick wave. When they entered the lobby, the same brunettes were
there to greet them, completely ignoring her again. There wasn’t anyone in the
elevator this time, to her surprise. She bitterly thought of Lex and what on
earth was he going to do with no one to push the damn buttons for him. She was
surprised as she watched him push the buttons, well she wasn’t really, but she
felt like being at bitch to him anyways after the way he had treated her.
Ordering her around like a little child. Ha!
“You like him, don’t you?” The question came out of nowhere and Chloe had to
look at Lex to make sure that it was in fact him who had asked it. She didn’t
have to ask who him was, she already knew. Was he jealous?
“I suppose I should ask you the same thing.” She was referring to him liking
Lana, but his answer took her completely off guard.
“Yes, he is very attractive.”
“You’re gay?” The way she said it was rude and inconsiderate, but she didn’t
care. She thought Lex was straight; she thought that he was in love with
fucking Lana.
“No.” Thank God! She was about to panic. Of course, she’d rather him be gay
than be in love with Lana.
“I didn’t think you were. You’re too in love with Ms. Perfect.” Chloe knew she
had made a mistake when she said it and immediately wished that she could take
a life remote and hit the rewind button.
“What?” Lex was looking right at her, he looked shocked, or as shocked as a
Luthor could look. Chloe ignored the question and practically leaped out of the
elevator when the doors had opened. She still had a key to the room, so she
didn’t bother on waiting for Lex who was saying her name over and over again.
Normally that wouldn’t have been a bad thing, but that would have been in a
case that will always remain a fantasy. This was not that fantasy.
Chloe rushed inside the penthouse, trying to out walk the raging Luthor who was
coming after her. She felt his hand grab onto her arm and pull her around.
“Chloe!” He was mad and he didn’t bother masking his face. Chloe didn’t know if
she should be happy or afraid. “What did you say?”
“You heard me, Lex!” She sounded ridiculous, yelling at him, but he started
yelling first.
“You think I love Lana?” She didn’t even have to clarify whom she was referring
to, that proved to her that she had spoken the truth. Both of Lex’s hands were
on her now, holding her in place, not letting her get away.
“Why wouldn’t I? She lives in the apartment above the Talon, which you own and
don’t charge her rent for. You’re going to be paying for her art school in
France! She doesn’t even know how to use a paintbrush!”
“That’s not true.” He was defending her. Chloe loosened her way from his grip
and headed to the bedroom. She could hear Lex following behind her. “Chloe,
wait.”
All the months of frustration have finally blown over the surface. Deep down
she wanted to keep bottling up her emotions; she didn’t want Lex to get the
best of her. But this, what he did earlier and what he was doing now. She
couldn’t take it any longer. They had to come out and in full force. Chloe
turned around to look at him; his face was masked over once again with a little
hint of something else peeking it’s way through. She couldn’t tell what it was,
but she really didn’t care either. “Have you even seen her paintings or her
drawings? If you had, then you wouldn’t be funding her tuition! Not only that,
Lex, anything she asks you grant it to her. You like her, you might even love
her. Why? Because she’s Miss Fucking Perfect and she’s not me!”
There was no way she could stop her tears from falling. There wasn’t any way
that she could hide them from Lex. Chloe had officially broken down in front of
the one person that she vowed never to show her true emotions to. All that went
a way from just a little switch to her life, to her world. She didn’t want to
look at him anymore. She didn’t want to watch as he looked at her with pity. It
made her angrier, sadder, if it was at all possible. Instead, she shut the
bedroom door in his face and crawled into the bed. There she would cry, let it
all go, now that he wasn’t watching. She didn’t care if he could hear her.
Hell, the whole world could probably hear her. Just as long as he wasn’t
watching her, she would let it out.
