Duncan knew that by this point in the game it was just a tad to late to wish he had told Quigley. Just a bit. Only a year and a half late.
Duncan grimaced as a huge slop of what should have been oatmeal covered his tray. My god he hated Mondays breakfast. He knew that he should be more bothered by the moving concoction on his plate than whether or not he’d mentioned certain things to his brother, but it didn’t really matter. Glumly Duncan sat down across from the Baudelairs.
“I hate Mondays.” He said to them. Just like he did every Monday, and then he began to eat/poke his food. Isadora sat down next to him and studied his face.
“I have a feeling it’s not just Mondays today.” She said. Duncan looked at her briefly and she winced. “Sorry. I didn’t know if that was…well, never mind about that eh?” She quickly turned to her own food.
Isadora knew. Duncan remembered going to her room when he was six to announce that he wanted to marry Quigley. He also remembered going back to her room just three days before the fire to tell her that he still meant it. And to try and casually mention that he was gay and happened to really love his brother.
She had actually held him while he cried telling him it was all right. She had understood in some way or fashion, that he needed her. She hadn’t turned him away.
When the fire happened and Quigley died she had tried to comfort him. And he soon learned why she understood.
They’re relationship wasn’t what anyone would call loving. Isadora loved him. But he didn’t love her. They had kissed. They had engaged in sexual activities. Which always ended with Duncan crying and Isadora sporting a rather large bruise.
She had one right now.
Last night he had gone into her room and sat on her bed. They talked. And then something changed. He had her pinned to the bed. Face down. He didn’t want to see her breasts or her face. She looked so much different from him. He tied her hands as she began to get nervous and protest. He beat her into silence.
Duncan did just what he wanted to then he collected his clothes and began to leave. “I love you.” She whispered and Duncan turned a cold eye on her. “I love Quigley.” He responded and left her crying.
He would always think about Quigley the next morning. And for some reason she never left his side. He supposed it was the fact that love was really that strong.
As Duncan threw his half eaten breakfast away he continued to think about her. Why had his thoughts shifted like this? Duncan was angry with himself, with her, and with Quigley. This train of thought turned sour.
Duncan ran outside where he promptly threw up. Isadora was there in seconds.
“Duncan! Oh no! Here let me get you to the nurse. Is there something you-” Duncan pushed her hands off.
“Don’t touch me. Just don’t…” He couldn’t handle this. “You look so similar to him.” Duncan gently touch her face and then full out hugged her. “But you’re not him. You’re just not him.”
They didn’t kiss anymore. They didn’t make love anymore. Because they never had.
