Micah stood patiently just outside the bedroom door, watching Anita race back and forth, trying to get ready and out of the house toward another crime scene. He didn’t like that Dolph brought her into these things; almost always, the something that had done the killing would go after his Nimir-Ra.
Fixing his green eyes upon her every movement, he smiled. She was perfect for him and their leopards. As always, a small jealous part of him reared up in the quiet moments like this, and he’d have to squash it before Anita caught wind of it. Micah took pride in being the easiest male to deal with in her hectic life because she appreciated him and his sincerity.
“I think you’ll find what you’re looking for in the drawer by the bedside,” he purred, stretching his arms above his head lazily, like the cat that he was.
Anita scrambled quickly to the bedside table and opened the drawer. Her shout of delight made his heart glow happily. It had humbled him to find her, his mate. It humbled him to know that she was strong, beautiful, kind, and practical. It humbled him to know that she was his match and he was hers, even if it was only a small portion of her being he was paired perfectly with.
As she zipped by with her newly found keys, Anita paused briefly to hug him and give him a kiss on the cheek. He cupped her chin tenderly, raising her face to his to lay a slow, sensual kiss on her lips. They were both breathless when she lifted her head away. Lust filled her eyes before she suppressed it with a will so determined he’d come to revere it.
Anita never let anyone who was hers or that she deemed hers to remain in trouble. The pard was blessed to have a leopard queen such as she. Micah could only hope he filled in half as well as a Nimir-Raj.
A light touch on his shoulder startled him; he’d been so wrapped up in his thoughts of his feisty queen that he hadn’t noticed anyone approaching him. Turning, Micah saw that it was Nathaniel and relaxed. Who else would be here in her house but beautiful Nathaniel?
“Nimir-Raj,” the younger leopard greeted respectfully. “Is there anything you’d have me do?”
He thought about it, glancing around the house before his gaze landed on the rumpled bed. “Help me make the bed, then we’ll go grab some breakfast. Will there be others joining us soon?”
Nathaniel nodded. “Yes: Cherry, Merle, Zane… and Elizabeth.”
Micah frowned at the long pause between Zane’s name and the next mentioned name. “Elizabeth?”
The wereleopard tugged the sheets up to the headboard, avoiding his eyes. “It’s about time she showed up.”
“She needs to learn respect,” Micah commented casually. “Or we’ll have a problem again when she and Anita are together. Do you think these little lessons are having the desired effect on our dear Elizabeth?”
After another long pause, Nathaniel shrugged noncommittally. “The true test would be to have the two of them in the same room together.”
Micah laughed suddenly, a quick happy noise, causing his beast to grin as well. “Oh I don’t see that happening any time soon, do you? Elizabeth has far too much mouth and far too little brain to understand that provoking Anita is bad for her health.”
“Our Nimir-Ra held sympathy for Elizabeth because of the death of her lover, but she doesn’t feel guilty anymore. Not that she ever should have. Gabriel wasn’t worth the risk of letting him live,” Nathaniel whispered in a strained voice, a fine shudder running through him.
“Our Nimir-Ra knew best,” Micah concurred readily, fluffing up his pillow and sticking it against the headboard.
When they were done, Micah led the way from the room out towards the kitchen. The sunlit room glittered invitingly as they went about preparing breakfast for those still asleep in the other rooms. They didn’t worry about fixing Damian anything until closer to dusk because he was a vampire, but Noah and Merle were bunked downstairs and the sleepyheads would be straggling upstairs shortly.
“Want to make pancakes and waffles?” Nathaniel asked, opening the cupboards and rummaging through them for the batter mix.
Shrugging, Micah countered, “How do you feel about French toast?”
“It doesn’t matter,” the young wereleopard said casually.
“Doesn’t it? Why not make a feast of foods?”
A grin broke out, reaching Nathaniel’s pretty violet eyes. They set about gathering everything they needed which once would have been a challenge as Anita didn’t cook, but now they had loads of food and appliances because Noah and Gina loved to cook. Zane was even trying to squeeze in a lesson here or there, mostly easy things that he could and would show off to Cherry later.
Everything was all set to go and sizzling under the pair’s watchful eyes when Micah’s guards came up from below, blinking rapidly in an attempt to adjust their eyes. Noah yawned and scratched his chest as he wandered over to the stove to peep into the frying pans.
“I approve,” the dark skinned man said, flashing his teeth. “And, amazingly enough, it smells good.”
“Bum!” Micah exclaimed, smacking his bodyguard lightly on the arm in camaraderie.
Merle looked sterner than usual, but Micah knew that was because the man hadn’t any food in his stomach. The older man became more alive after his morning meal. Sometimes Micah wondered if Merle regretted letting him take over the pard as easily as he had. It wasn’t like he had saved them; it had been Anita’s power and strength and care that had healed the problems within their combined groups.
Vivian and Gina, while still timid and withdrawn, could look into anyone’s eyes without flinching. Vivian even had a boyfriend, and there was a man where Gina worked that flirted with her. Micah knew she wasn’t ready for a relationship and told her to tell him the moment the man began to pressure her in any way.
“Eat up,” he ordered, handing out steaming mugs of coffee as Noah dished up their morning meal and placed it on the table.
Nathaniel sat first and dug into his waffles with relish. Noah buttered his pancakes and poured a liberal amount of syrup over them before saying a quick grace and eating. Merle grimaced, leaning against the countertop and shaking his head slightly as he took another long gulp of black coffee.
Micah felt a soul deep peace wash over and through him, stirring his beast contentedly. Nerves tingled as the beast rolled and stretched and curled, eliciting a collective shudder from his leopards. He smiled lazily in response, pulling out a chair and sitting with the others.
He covered his French toast with an enormous amount of powdered sugar before cutting it and tasting it with a delighted moan. They sat there eating happily, and friendly banter and chatter was being tossed back and forth when the doorbell rang.
Micah pushed back his chair just as Merle took a step forward toward the living room. “Stay, Nimir-Raj,” the older man said. “After all, I am here to guard you.”
“It’s just Zane and Cherry with Elizabeth,” Micah countered, silkily gliding a step ahead of him.
“Exactly,” Merle conceded. “It is because it’s Elizabeth that I ask you to wait.”
He stopped in his tracks and gave Merle a funny look. “You really think she’s a threat to me? To the pard?”
“Undeniably,” Merle said, nodding. “She treats our Nimir-Ra like shit.”
“Then it’s time for us to return the favor. It’s obvious that she upsets many of us.”
“Nimir-Raj?” Merle questioned softly, hesitating to go to the door just yet.
“Go. Go,” Micah said absently.
Cherry and Zane stepped over the threshold, followed by Caleb and Elizabeth. Micah wasn’t happy with the fact they were dating each other. Having the hard cases teamed together wasn’t very appealing, but when Anita had learned of their relationship, she had been delighted. Maybe she’d believed having the two paired up would keep them from making trouble within the pard.
“Hey Mic,” Caleb greeted, falling to his knees to snuffle around his legs.
Cherry and Zane each grabbed one of his hands and licked the palm once or twice before dropping it and stepping back. Anita had taught them a very informal way to greet her because it was what she was comfortable with, and it was fine because Cherry and Zane both held the deepest of respect for their alphas. Caleb had done the more traditional greeting while Elizabeth had completely snubbed him.
“Elizabeth,” he warned, his voice trickling past his throat in a soft growl.
She rolled her eyes and squatted, countering Caleb’s every move with one of her own. When she tried to bite and nip at Micah’s hips, Merle’s hand stayed her. Elizabeth huffed and flopped backwards, glaring.
“I was only trying to continue the way Gabriel would have liked.”
Micah‘s green eyes swirled as his beast raised up, pushing at her own. “I do not want – nor do I need – sex from you.”
“No, you get to share one chick with a dozen other guys,” Elizabeth ribbed maliciously, smirking all the while. “How often do you get to boink Anita? Once a week for thirty minutes if she can squeeze you into her schedule?”
Nathaniel came into the room with Noah then, arms brushing companionably. Both were staring hard at Elizabeth, and it was obvious they’d overheard. Noah was offended for Micah’s sake, but Nathaniel bristled because of her cattiness towards his Nimir-Ra.
“Should we take this outside?” Noah asked, growling. “That way if this meeting goes wrong,” he gave Elizabeth a pointed stare before looking back at his Nimir-Raj, “Anita won’t be able to find out?”
After a slight pause where it looked like he was about to say something, Micah nodded, trouping out of the kitchen through the sliding glass doors. He led the group into the woods behind the pard’s official home. At the edge of the clearing Micah turned toward Nathaniel and nodded back at the house, saying, “I hear a car coming up. If it’s Anita, tell her we’re out, and if it’s Gregory and Vivian, lead them to us.”
“All right.” Saluting once, Nathaniel raced back toward the house and hurried inside just as the group disappeared into the forest.
Leaves crunched beneath his boots as he led the way farther and farther in. Sometimes he wished he didn’t have to be practical, but now wasn’t one of those times. He needed to handle it because this task was not something Anita would participate in. Even if Elizabeth was a pain in the ass. Anita would say that being a the ass wasn't an excuse to torture. The thought alone lifted the corners of his mouth. Raking a hand through his hair, Micah stopped and sniffed the air.
Wolves.
“Wolves are coming,” Merle announced, taking a step closer to him.
“Yes, I can tell,” he replied casually.
“Richard?” Zane asked, grabbing Cherry’s hand.
Cherry shook her head and rebutted, “No, I don’t think so. Why would he be here?”
“Yes, why would he?” Elizabeth piped up. “It’s not like he’s going to get any action anytime soon either.”
“Shut up, Elizabeth,” Noah bit off, craning his neck to look behind him.
“I can smell Nathaniel now too,” Zane added, looking hopeful. “He isn’t frightened; maybe it’s Stephen coming with Vivian.”
“This is pard business!” Caleb shouted, outraged. “Not pack. Whoever it is must leave immediately.”
A figure came loping out of the greenery, quickly followed by two more. It was Sylvie. She shook out her curly brown hair and grinned bemusedly at them.
“Micah,” she greeted informally.
“Geri?” he questioned, feeling his beast fill him up from the inside out. “Why are you here?”
“Well, I caught wind of the… umm,” she flashed her brown eyes in Elizabeth’s direction. “That something would be important for me to witness.”
“Witness?” Caleb inquired quietly, angrily.
Sylvie stood still under the wereleopards’ gaze, waiting patiently. She had a lot at stake in Elizabeth’s punishment. The bitch had taken great pleasure in sexually torturing her when Gabriel had been the leader of the leopards. Elizabeth had wanted to do it, practically begged to do it. It was why Sylvie had to be here to see her get what she deserved, whatever it might be.
“Let her stay.”
“What!” Caleb yelled, spinning around to look at Micah, who stood calmly.
“She is Anita’s friend, and thus the pard’s friend. The wolves have kindly shown us their lupanar; it is time we showed our parlione. Come, not far now.”
Sylvie smiled smugly at the upstart and followed Anita’s Nimir-Raj with ease through the foliage.
They’d been going along for some time when an earsplitting yowl pierced the air. Micah nodded toward Merle, who turned and yowled back. This continued for a few minutes before Nathaniel and Gregory leapt gracefully onto the pathway.
“It’s beyond that line of trees,” Nathaniel said sidling up to Sylvie and offering his neck to her in greeting.
She paused to sniff his skin, gathering his scent in the back of her throat. In turn she offered him her collarbone.
“Hurry now, the parlione is right up ahead,” Micah murmured quietly, withdrawn.
When he stepped over the threshold to the pard’s parlione, his breath caught and held. It was majestic like always. A pool of water lapped softly against the shore. A semicircle of stone seats gathered to form a council around a silent fire.
Butterflies drifted lazily along the water’s edge, drinking the nectar of the lilies springing forth in abundance. It was a quiet place, with water cool as a breath of mountain fresh air to drink. The lake was deep and good for swimming. Micah had bought the land in addition to Anita’s property when they had found it, when Zane and Nathaniel had brought him to this peaceful place.
Sylvie took a chair on the right side of the two larger chairs, waiting impatiently. She knew she was an outsider and the first non-leopard to be allowed to enter in their parlione, so she said nothing but watched with a sense of satisfaction.
“It gets me every time I come here,” Gregory whispered in awe.
“It is new to us,” Elizabeth snorted. “It’ll wear off with use.”
“Sit down,” Noah growled softly toward Elizabeth. “Our Nimir-Raj has called us here today, and you will show him respect.”
Zane and Cherry hurried after Nathaniel and Gregory to take their seats on the stone chairs. Merle nudged Caleb into a seat before going back to stand beside Elizabeth. A subtle signal from Micah and his enforcers grabbed her. She started hissing and kicking at them, but their sheer strength held her immobile.
“Elizabeth,” Micah intoned in a deadly quiet voice as he stalked toward them. “You’ve wronged this pard for the last time. Large or small, you’ve got no more chances. Today is a warning, Beth, think on it.”
“Bite me! Anita would hurt you for laying a hand on me!”
“You’re right, Anita would hurt me for torturing you without due cause. And I have due cause. You will learn respect, Elizabeth,” Micah purred softly, stepping directly in front of her.
Elizabeth tossed her head, and he mentally sighed. Too much anger. Too much pride. Didn’t she understand just how good a thing she could be having if she’d just give into it and not blame the very reason for her idyllic existence on the death for a man not worth spitting on?
Quietly he demanded, “Who is your Nimir-Raj?”
“You are,” she spat at him, tugging on her arms, which were still held prisoner.
“That’s right, and what power does your Nimir-Raj hold over you?”
At that Elizabeth remained silent.
His pupils contracted as his teeth elongated into fangs. “I, your Nimir-Raj, am able to restore or take away the energy of that which is pard. Who is pard?”
Finally the feline began to sweat, licking her lips. “I am,” she answered.
“That’s right, you are. You are my pard. My leopard. Your energy is mine for the taking. Stand up, Elizabeth, and face the pard.”
On wobbly legs, Elizabeth stood and faced the semi circle of stone chairs.
“Good. Noah, Merle, let her go and take your place.”
They looked at each other, their grips on their prisoner’s arms tightening warningly before they released her and did his bidding. As they took their seats he sent out fissures of power to brush along her skin. While he could not metaphysically rip her beast out of her body to prove his point, Micah was not without means.
“Can you tell us what your offense has been? Or are you ignorant of it?”
“What offense?” she asked quickly, turning her back on the pard to face him.
Micah laughed. “I can smell the lie. You reek of it. Try again.”
His beast pushed roughly against hers, and she stumbled back.
“I have not been leopard to the pard. I have been self,” Elizabeth muttered grudgingly under her breath.
“Worse,” Micah growled, provoking her beast again. “You’ve offended your Nimir-Raj by your treatment of your Nimir-Ra and us. We are leopard. But you have acted otherwise with punishments you’ve no right to give out.”
“Like leaving me alone in Narcissus,” Nathaniel commented with a slow blink.
Gregory placed a comforting hand on Nathaniel’s arm with a carefully constructed expression. “Or refusing to help heal us.”
“Or giving us out to the vampire council,” Zane muttered quietly, squeezing Cherry’s and Gregory’s hands.
“Or inviting another pard in without your Nimir-Ra’s consent,” Merle grumbled, as if he still couldn‘t believe it.
“Like you have any right to complain about that!” Elizabeth spat, her eyes glowing green. “When she saved you all from Chimera! I didn’t hear any complaints then.”
“Why would we?” Micah asked calmly, staring her down. “We were saved from that wretch. But not by you. No, we were saved by Anita, and she’d already 'shot' her complaint before we merged pards. You put your Nimir-Ra in grave risk by inviting us here in the first place. There were no alphas in your group; how would you have survived without her? With a werewolf pack and a master vampire itching to kill you?”
“It’d be better than being under a human’s command. We are an embarrassment to the lycanthrope community,” Elizabeth hissed.
“That is not how I feel,” Micah snarled, his hands curling into claws as he reached for her. “I am your Nimir-Raj, Beth. You’d best remember what that means.”
Elizabeth choked, her eyes widening as Micah curled his claws into her beast. “You- you can’t make me transform-” she gasped in protest, clutching her beast to herself in a mighty hug.
“No, you’re right. I can’t. I can however take away what I give. I can heal you, Elizabeth, or I can harm you. It is my way.”
His beast prowled over her body predatorily, stalking her, sniffing her, looking for signs of weakness. And then there it was, an old wound healed slowly because it had been silver shot. Anita’s demonstration, Micah thought with a cold smile. What a perfect way to prove his point.
Fisting his claws into her beast to subdue it, Micah gnashed his teeth into the wound, ripping it open. Blood spurted from Elizabeth’s chest as she cried out. Her eyes flooded with pain as she flopped backwards, struggling to breathe.
“That one will hurt and take time reknitting itself, since you are forbidden to transform,” Micah told her grimly. “It will act just like it did the first time. How many times did Anita shoot you in the chest?”
He glanced up at Merle who shrugged then held up four fingers with another shrug. Obviously he didn’t know, but it didn’t matter; Micah had reopened the wounds as a whole, and they would do the same damage as before.
“Let’s go,” he ordered, leaving Elizabeth where she lay.
Caleb got up, looking both scared and angry, his mouth flapping. Sighing, Micah bid him to go to Beth’s side. As the rest of the pard gathered around him to leave, Sylvie came up to him. They faced each other awkwardly for a moment before she cupped his hands in hers and brought them to her face. A tear trickled down onto the tip of his finger as she mouthed thank you so that only he could see. When he bowed his head, Sylvie dropped his hands and departed, sprinting through the forest with grace and fluidity.
Noah made a tiny noise, and Micah immediately fixed him with his gaze. His glare had the other man shaking his head no repeatedly for a few seconds before staring straight ahead.
“What?” Micah asked tiredly, giving a lazy all over stretch and yawning behind his hand.
“Nothing,” Noah said too quickly.
“Nothing?” Micah asked with a raised brow.
Noah looked over at Merle with a pleading expression.
“Merle?”
Cherry and Gregory looked at Nathaniel behind Micah’s back, urging Nathaniel to step forward when Merle failed to answer him. Turning around, he caught Nathaniel’s reluctant shuffle forward.
“Well?” Micah growled, getting annoyed.
“Wedidn’tknowyoucoulddothat.Whendidithappen?” Nathaniel said in a rush.
“Oh,” was all he said for a moment. “I guess sometime after Anita, Jean-Claude, and I accidentally formed the first mark of another triumvirate.”
“Do you think you could’ve done that before?” Cherry asked as they reemerged in the backyard.
“I never tried, but no, I think I gained that bit of power after Anita and I either joined our beasts and pards or after the first mark.”
“Damn,” Zane whistled, “that girl knows how to bring power to herself and hers tenfold.”
Nothing eventful happened while Noah cooked lunch for everyone. The meal went on with congenial banter and pockets of comfortable silence until Merle packed in and took off for work. He wouldn’t be back until Anita got home. Gregory departed next for his part time pizza delivery job, which would end when his sets started onstage at Guilty Pleasures.
Noah left for the karate class that he taught at the local gym. It was only for a few hours, because he was Micah’s bodyguard for a reason. He only held the classes because Micah insisted on some alone time everyday.
When Cherry left with Zane and Nathaniel a few minutes later, Micah found himself in utter silence. He breathed it in with a happy smile. Now he could go and do what he loved best or choose between his two most favorite things: draw his cartoon Whiskers for Sunday’s paper or listen to the radio as he read a good book.
Padding softly through the house, he entered the study that had once been a dining room. He turned on the computer and opened the closet, taking out a piece of cardstock previously inked with boxes as the machine whirred to life. After retrieving his pens, he sat back in the comfortable leather chair before swiveling toward the monitor to log in.
Whiskers was a cartoon strip about lycanthropes and different weregroups. The main character was a spoof of Anita, who managed to get into the middle of different preternatural conflicts, like getting between jealous werewolves or a run in with the local vampire master.
Only here Whiskers wasn’t a vampire executioner, in league with police, romantically involved with any of the weres or vampires she came across, and lastly she was a wereleopard, unlike Anita.
The Sunday comic was lighthearted and generated a good response from the human community as well as the supernatural public. It was always good to wake up on Sunday morning to see Nathaniel or Anita pouring over the cartoon that he did under the pseudonym M. Wellington. He knew it was the only reason Anita allowed a newspaper into her home because she hated the write-ups about her throughout it.
Micah could understand her dislike of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. She was in it every day, whether the reference was linked to Jean-Claude or police business or Animators Inc. Only after Zane, Nathaniel, and Gregory were discussing a funny from Sunday did she relent long enough to stick a quarter in the newspaper stand to see what the fuss was about. Now she had a Sunday subscription to the Post-Dispatch.
He laughed quietly to himself when he heard the front door open. Immediately hiding the funny under the desk and shoving the pens back into the drawer, Micah twisted around to pull up something, anything, on the computer screen when the faint smell of her perfume danced into the room.
Micah grinned again. What was she doing home so early? Pushing away from the computer, he got up and walked to the doorway to greet her.
Anita nearly barreled into him as she rounded the corner. Steadying her with his hands, Micah flashed her a lopsided smirk seconds before capturing her mouth with his. She moaned, wrapping her arms around his neck as their bodies brushed intimately against each other.
“Welcome back stranger,” he teased when the kiss broke off.
“It’s good to be back,” Anita murmured contentedly, gazing into his eyes.
Micah felt a jolt of arousal flare in his groin at the sight of her staring up at him as if he’d be the most delicious chocolate truffle to sink her teeth into. Oh, he hoped she would too.
Anita’s fingers trailed teasingly over his stomach, scratching lightly with her nails. He purred contentedly, wrapping his arms around her and pressing her back against the wall. She laughed throatily as her other hand swept a path from his hip up his back to wrap into his long, dark, curly hair, tugging him closer.
Gladly succumbing to her insistent grip, he kissed her wholly on the mouth, parting her lips to slip his tongue inside to duel with hers. Too soon did the kiss break, leaving him bereft of her playful tongue. Easing back, he stared down at her his yellowish-greenish irises flaring with lust and need.
“Why are you here so early?” Micah asked perplexedly, looking down at his watch again to check the time. “You’re hours early, are you not?”
“Took the rest of the day off,” Anita told him, grinning coyly from up under her lashes as her other hand trailed down from his waist to his hip. “I wonder just what I’m going to have to do to wile away the hours.”
“Conversing with the flowers? Singing with the rain?”
“If I only had a brain,” she finished delightedly, leaning up to lick behind his ear. “Besides, can’t I just come by mid afternoon to see you?”
“Hmm,” he murmured concurring. His hands cupped the weight of her breasts, lifting and molding them. “That depends, why have you have come to see me?”
She bit his earlobe, worrying it between her teeth as she hummed softly. “Because I knew we’d have some alone time what with everyone gone off to work or wherever.”
Micah shuddered in her arms, his eyes closing with the fierceness of his desire for the petite woman he held. He’d never get over it: how perfectly they fit, the sense of belonging, of rightness, the truth all of it proving that they were a matched and mated pair.
“What were you planning to do once you cornered me in this empty house?” he asked breathlessly, trying to keep his thoughts focused and not on the generous swells of her breasts.
Anita swiped the shell of his ear with her tongue, breathing hotly, “I was going to see if I could make you purr.”
She flashed a coquettish look from beneath her lashes before attacking the pulse fluttering in his throat. Her fingers brushed eagerly against his rising erection as she popped open the button on his jeans. Micah hissed, feeling dizzy with the effects she had on his senses.
Making quick work of the row of buttons on her blouse, he hastily removed the garment. Anita had already removed her coat, leaving only her tan lace bra between him and the glorious perfection of her hardening nipples.
The sound of the teeth on his zipper filled the room as the erotic feel of her fingers swept tantalizingly over his hard cock. Her fingers closed around his girth, measuring it as she pumped him gently. She scratched the head lightly with her nail and he growled, snatching her up in his arms.
They tumbled to the ground locked in a zealous kiss. Their remaining clothes were hurriedly removed, followed by the wet press of kisses to the exposed skin. Micah wrapped his mouth around her pebbled nipple, tracing the taut peak with his tongue and teeth as he nibbled his way around the circumference.
“Micah,” Anita pleaded huskily, her hands running down the smooth planes of his back, squeezing his firm butt.
Looking up from where he suckled on her captured breast, Micah groaned at the intimacy of the act. He stretched, matching his hips and chest and mouth and eyes to hers. The feel of her wet nipples brushing his chest and his straining cock against her moist folds sent a dizzying wave of need through him.
“Yes,” he grunted, shifting his weight to his hands.
In one swift thrust, he entered her sleek passage up to his balls. Anita cried out, her back bowing upwards as he slammed into her. Her nails dug into his shoulders as he rode her tight, hot channel, and he reveled in the bite of her grip. She lifted her hips, sliding him further in, deeper than before.
With a conscious thought, he elongated the size of his penis inside her. Anita’s breath caught in her throat. A strangled noise escaped her as her hips bucked forward.
Sweat mingled, glistening between their bodies at they rubbed against each other. She clawed at him, her fingers biting into his forearms as he pistoned wildly, straining for the shiny edge of release.
“Micah!” Anita screamed, tossing her head back and forth in surrender.
“Nimir-Ra,” he snarled, with another stabbing thrust.
A few more thrusts sent them spiraling into oblivion. Her sleek folds fluttered madly about him as he came hard, buried deeply inside those rapidly contracting muscles. Anita wrung from him every drop he had to offer as he roared his release.
“Nimir-Raj,” she panted breathlessly as he slipped from inside her.
Her hands cupped the back of his sweaty neck, combing through the matted locks of hair at the nape. Micah trembled, his hips bucking against her. She sighed softly, wrapping her legs around him loosely, too tired to move.
Together they lay in silence, simply enjoying the soft broken breaths and slowly calming heartbeats of the other. A tangled mass of limbs and sweat and afterglow. Anita murmured wordlessly, lost in feeling, while Micah’s breath heated the under curve of her breast.
Eventually Micah gathered her up in his arms and stood, walking into their bedroom. He tried to get through the doorway without bumping her, but he seemed incapable of it as no matter how he angled himself, some part of her always seemed to get wedged into the doorway. Anita laughed at their predicament, touching his shoulder.
“Stop. Stop,” she gasped, “Let me down, I’ve got to get dressed anyway.”
“What for?” he pouted, letting her slide down from his arms.
They both inhaled sharply at the sensation of her nipples grazing his chest. Micah looked deeply into her eyes and surrendered to the need inside him. Gently he kissed her brow, her eyelids, her nose, and finally the petal soft curves of her lips. She sighed, wrapping her arms around his neck, leaning into him.
Wrenching himself away from her tantalizing kisses, he rasped again, “What for?”
“Jean-Claude and Asher have something they want to do tonight,” Anita said, biting her lip.
Micah’s heart clenched, but he smiled, knowing that she was waiting for him to explode, for the other shoe to drop. It wouldn’t, of course; he knew better than any of the other males that swarmed around her. One day she’d realize it too. And he knew he should be grateful for what he had with her. The other males had had to wait much longer for her affection than he had.
If only she’d analyzed that- with the rest she had to contemplate loving every step of the way- with him she just reacted. Had from the beginning. They were mates, a matched pair, lovers, friends, Nimir-Ra and Nimir-Raj. She was Queen to his King, and he, King to her Queen. Male and female counterparts in perfect harmony. Anita would understand someday. Not now. He was patient. He could wait. Would wait.
“Fancy? Should I help you pick something out?” he asked, rubbing her elbows with his hands.
Anita frowned slightly. “Damn it, I knew I forgot to ask them something. They’re being so secretive about it. I have no idea.”
“How about we dress you up in something casually elegant then?” he suggested, leading her into the bedroom.
She sat down on the edge of the bed while he rifled through the clothes in her closet. Micah found what he was looking for and whisked it out with another hanger. Presenting to her a long crinkled black skirt and a simple black v-neck top reading, ‘The Penguins made me do it’ in white lettering.
“Are you sure about the top?” Anita asked, laughing.
“I don’t see why not,” Micah replied as he tossed them at her.
It took him even less time to scour through her drawer of lingerie to find suitable black undergarments. Returning, he lifted her arms and slipped the bra on, also black, his fingers palming their warm flesh before deftly closing the eyehooks. Anita panted, her eyes darkening at his touch. Micah smirked, infinitely pleased with her reaction before helping her shimmy into black bikini underwear.
Anita kissed him hungrily, biting his tongue when it swept eagerly into her mouth.
“You still have to get ready,” he protested weakly as she climbed into his lap.
“Funny thing is, I don’t care,” she retorted, kissing his throat, working her way down until she suckled his rapid pulse into her mouth.
Their beasts flared hotly, rolling and hitting with their paws in foreplay. Micah groaned, hoping she’d bite him and mark him as hers, like she did with Nathaniel. But she moved on, leaving him to sigh in disappointment. At his expulsion of breath, Anita looked up and then at the clock.
“Shit,” she cursed, scrambling up and away from him off the bed.
It took her two seconds flat to toss on the outfit that he picked out for her, another two seconds to kiss him flush on the mouth, and two more to walk out of the bedroom to gather her weapons and leave.
“Shit,” he reiterated, sliding off the bed.
Micah had emails to send. He’d been putting them off because Anita would balk at the very idea of it, but that woman needed bodyguards. Weeks ago, he’d sent out feelers for some alpha leopards, and he’d gotten four applicants for the position. All he needed to do now was to contact them to make appointments.
Going back into his office, Micah flopped into the chair and swiveled it back to the computer. A shaking of the mouse made the screen saver disappear and the internet browser he’d opened reappear. A few minutes later, he was into his hotmail account writing out emails to set up dates with the interviewees. When he was done, he sat back with his arms behind his head.
Yawning, he stretched and took the cartoon from under the desk to work on it. He spent a few moments on inking Whiskers and Bootie before tossing the pen back down. The cartoon was in the back of the closet when Micah heard a car pulling up in the driveway.
“Micah,” Cherry called out wildly, walking through the unlocked entranceway.
“Yeah?” he asked, poking his head out of the doorway.
“Nathaniel got himself into another scrape, and we need you to go and get him out of it.”
“What the hell happened?” he asked, grabbing his jacket and racing out to the hallway to meet her.
“Zane and I will tell you on the way, hurry,” she ordered shakily.
“Right, where to?” Micah asked scrambling into the Ford truck behind Zane, who was at the wheel.
“Lunatic Café,” Zane replied tersely, not sparing a look at him as he peeled out of the driveway.
“What could happen to Nathaniel in there?” Micah asked, shocked that Nathaniel had been attacked in the lycanthrope owned and operated restaurant.
“You’d be surprised,” Cherry said dryly. “It was, after all, owned by Raina, and now by Richard.”
Growling, Micah felt his hands extend into claws as he demanded, “Did Richard start something?”
Zane swung the car into park and jumped out the door, running into the café ahead of them. Cherry waited a bit more patiently for him to climb out from the back seat of the truck, but then she too was off running the moment his feet hit the pavement.
“Never a dull moment,” Micah huffed angrily as he followed her, ready to shoot the bear.
However, when he walked into the restaurant, he was floored. All of his leopards sat at about twelve tables bunched together, including Nathaniel right as rain, with Anita, Jean-Claude, and Asher sitting near the head of the tables. There was a space left open for him.
“What’s this all about?” he hissed to Cherry under his breath as she beckoned him to go take his seat.
“Why, Micah, Nimir-Raj, don’t you know? It’s one year since you’ve come into our lives here in St. Louis.”
Astounded, Micah groped for his chair beside Anita and sank into it. Anita smiled gently reaching for his hand under the table and giving it a light squeeze.
“How you feeling, hotshot?” She smiled sexily at him while Jean-Claude waved at the waiter to come over.
“Stunned. Why go to all this?” he asked looking around at all of them.
Jean-Claude spread his hands wide, a feral smile showing his fangs. “Simple, mon ami. You’re important to us all.”
“A major person in all our lives,” Asher agreed.
“Ditto to what they said,” Anita murmured, bringing their hands from under the table to her lips. “You’re what everyone’s been needing, including me.”
“I don’t know what to say,” he laughed sheepishly.
“Just tell the waitress what you want to drink,” Zane told him with a wink.
The End.
