Jolene sat at her desk as normal. Filling out the paperwork that her boss refused to fill out and complete. She stamped the last paper of a large stack that had been in the ‘To be finished box’ and placed it into the ‘Finished’ box. She sighed and sat back, she pulled her crimson jacket over the black button up shirt she wore. Along with this she wore a short red skirt and black high heeled boots with a large ‘W’ on the toe; as was the symbol of Wonka Industries. She wore a feminine version of her bosses usual style, as was his request.
She grabbed her top hat that hung on a hat rack in her office and slipped it on over her long, crimson hair. Her bright emerald eyes searched her desk for a moment and finally came across the clipboard she was searching for. She grabbed it and pinned a few papers that needed Mr. Wonka’s signature, heading out of the door. She greeted the Oompa Loompas that she passed, the only other workers at Wonka Industries.
Besides Mr. Wonka, Jolene was the only human that worked at the factory. This was because Mr. Wonka had come to trust her since she was the only friend he had made at the orphanage that he went to as a young child. All the other children had been frightened of him because of his horrible set of braces that mercilessly covered his entire head, making him look like a freak at some sideshow. Mr. Wonka also had developed an obsession for candy, chocolate in particular; that he still carried with him to the present day, as he was the owner of the largest and most successful candy factory in the world.
Willy Wonka’s father, Wilbur Wonka was a rather successful dentist, which contributed to Willy Wonka’s obsession with candy. When Willy was young his father never let him have candy, at all. Later in his life, Willy had become tired of this treatment and ‘ran away’ though he was forced to return and found that his father had left him and traveled to some unknown destination.
Not long after he was found living in an alleyway next to the local candy store, living off the candy that they threw away for whatever reason. He was taken to the orphanage, where the majority of the children shunned him automatically for his braces. Jolene, however accepted him as she was made fun of too. Not for something as drastic as his braces but for reading and writing almost constantly. She had always loved books, they developed a friendship almost automatically.
Of course, when Willy was living in that alleyway, his braces had fallen into disrepair and he had to get them taken off, which he held no argument of. When he came back from the dentist that day, without his braces he proved to be an amazingly handsome young man. With, as expected, the most beautiful teeth ever to be seen. The other children, especially the young girls had tried to make amends with the new Willy Wonka, but he would hear none of it.
After that day, Jolene and Willy’s friendship seemed to grow even stronger, since they had accepted each other for who they were, in the first place. Through the years, they grew up together, always confiding in one another for any problems that they came across. As in any friendship, they had a number of fights but had always quickly made up. Willy, almost always presenting her with chocolate and Jolene always sharing a poem of apology. Which Willy had always kept and hung above his bed to remember their undying friendship.
Neither of them were adopted throughout the years, the other children went and new ones came. When they came of age they packed their things together and left together. Though, they were headed for different things. Willy was planning to chase his dream of owning his own candy company, whereas Jolene was chasing after her own dream of being a famous writer and going to college.
They said many goodbyes and made never ending promises to each other. They swore to confide in each other like they always had, no matter what. During that goodbye Willy presented her with a chocolate rose that he said he had been saving for quite sometime. Jolene presented him with a poem of goodbyes and long lasting memories. They both fought not to cry as they said goodbye, they hugged and went their separate ways.
Jolene went through college smoothly, finally getting her degree in writing. Willy, of course was a success in his chocolate company. Jolene could hardly believe it when she saw her first Wonka Bar. She bought one immediately, though he wasn’t too famous then, so they were standing in the same shop but she didn’t even know it. Jolene stared at the bar of chocolate for a long while before she opened it and took a bite. It was, as she expected, the most wonderful chocolate she had ever had.
She stood at the counter for a moment then turned to the clerk.
“ Excuse me, but where might I find Mr. Wonka? I am an old friend of his.” She said wrapping up the remainder of the chocolate and slipping it into her bag. The clerk stared at her for a moment then spoke up.
“ He’s in the back…I don’t know if he has time to visit.” He said, Jolene had to smile.
“ Well tell him ‘The Book Worm’ is here to see him, he’ll know who you’re talking about.” She said smirking. The clerk shrugged and turned to go into a door in the back. Jolene looked around the small shop, taking in every candy on the shelves. A moment later the clerk returned, smiling pleasantly.
“ He says you can go on back and see him. He’s the one with the funny hat.” He said and went off to help another customer. Jolene smiled and headed to the door, she opened it and entered one of the most magnificent rooms she had ever set foot it. It was colorful, and full of amazing varieties of candies that she had never seen before. She stared around the room, taking it in before actually looking for Willy. She saw, over a row of colorful candies that seemed to be lollipops in the making, the top of a red top hat. She smirked and walked to it. She stared through the crimson colored candy, the face on the other side seemed distorted through it.
“ Willy?” She said and the distorted face turned to her. They both moved sideways until they came to the end of the red candy and the path was clear. Jolene and Willy both stared at each other for a moment. Willy had aged, of course but he still held the child-like sweetness that he always had. His hair was short, barely sticking out below the brim of his high top hat. He wore a wonderful crimson jacket and a collared button up shirt with a silver ’W’ serving as the clip to hold the collar. Black pants and the shoes baring the same ‘W’.
After taking in each others appearances, that hadn’t changed so much that they didn’t recognize each other, they smiled and both yelled happily pulling each other into a tight embrace. Jolene blinked tears back as they hugged, but eventually they poured out of her eyes. After they pulled away from each other, Willy wiped a tear from her cheek and laughed.
“ What happened to the tough one?” He asked, in a happy, child-like voice.
“ College…” She said and they both laughed. Willy turned and grabbed something from a nearby counter.
“ Here…” He said holding a small candy that was shaped like a birds egg. “ Open up.” Jolene did so and he popped it in her mouth. A moment later she felt the candy crack open and tasted chocolate. Willy guided her to a shiny, reflective piece of candy. “ Check it out.” Jolene opened her mouth and saw that the candy outside had melted and there was a piece of chocolate shaped like a bird. She smiled at Willy and hugged him again.
“ You’re a genius, Willy!” She said swallowing the chocolate. That day Jolene and Willy caught up on the last four years of their lives, testing all of Willy’s wonderful candies all the while. They poked fun at each other, as they used to do in the orphanage. Jolene quickly became a regular at the candy shop, buying something everyday and sticking by Willy’s side in the back room as he explained all of his candies and ideas for candies with her.
She soon began to work at a book store that was right across the street from his little candy shop. About a year later Willy had discovered he needed a bigger building. In which he began construction on a colossal factory, all the while confiding in Jolene for any problems he came across in his business.
When construction was finished, Jolene went to the opening ceremony, grinning all the while. Business went amazingly well for the factory for a long while. Jolene would be in and out of the factory before and after work. Willy soon offered her a job, she took it immediately being his ‘2nd in command’ as he called it. He soon said she had to wear a ‘uniform’ it had been a joke at first but then he ordered her clothes to match his own, only in a more feminine manner.
However it soon came to Willy’s attention that some of his employees were serving as spies for fellow candy companies. He closed the factory, firing all of the workers and shutting the gate, forever. Jolene had been offered a place to stay in the factory and she did, all the while trying to convince Willy to open the factory again.
“ Willy, please! Listen to me!” She said one night, as she sat on the desk in his office and he paced back and forth in front of her in his black and gold embroidered robe and slippers. “ You have to open the factory again! Your candy is so wonderful you can’t just quit.”
“ But I can! I can’t risk any more of my ideas being stolen…I want to make candy, Jolene. I really do…I just need to figure out a way to get people to work for me that won’t sell me out.” He said turning to her, not pacing anymore. His large eyes were still child-like, but no longer a happy child. He seemed to be hurt in every way imaginable, Jolene remembered that look when he first came to the orphanage and the other children had made fun of him. Jolene sighed and slipped off of the desk, she wore her pajamas that Willy gave her recently, the pants were black silk with small red W’s all over them and the shirt was a black tank top with a large red W on the front.
She walked over to him and hugged him.
“ I’m sorry you were hurt, Willy. We need to find some trustworthy people to work for you.” She said and Willy smiled.
“ You always did care too much about me…” He said hugging her she looked up at him.
“ Oh shut up…” She said shaking her head. Willy laughed and walked to his desk, on the top was a map of some place called ‘Loompaland.’ Jolene sat on the desk once more and crossed her legs, staring down at the map. “ What’s all this?”
“ It’s somewhere I’m going to go to try to find new flavors for candy.” Willy said tracing his finger along the map. Jolene looked up at him.
“ Is this place dangerous?” She asked, suspiciously. Willy didn’t often think through things when it came to new candy.
“ Yes…” He said off-handedly and Jolene smacked him in the head. “ OW!! What?” He looked up at her.
“ Is anyone going with you?” She asked.
“ No, Mom…” He said mockingly to her. “ I wanted to ask you to keep an eye on the factory for me.” Jolene’s anger had faded rather quickly, as it tended to when it was directed at Willy.
“ Really?” She asked, rather surprised.
“ Yeah, why wouldn’t I?” He said rubbing his head. Jolene smiled and kissed the top of his head. He looked up at her and smiled.
“ I’ll watch the factory…But if you die-”
“ You’ll kill me…Yeah, yeah, yeah…” He said rolling his eyes. “ Now go to bed, I have to sleep… I’m leaving tomorrow.”
