Chapter 1
Lillian McAdams came in to work to find Edward Woodworth watching yet another monster werewolf movie.
"Hey Lillian, you should watch this, so far this movie seems accurate when it comes to werewolves."
Lillian shook her head at him. You see, Edward wasn't just a monster fanatic; he actually believes in werewolves and even has a story about his grandfather finding one and killing it. He even says that his grandfather has his trophy hanging on his wall. Lilly felt for the poor animal. Now, if only Edward knew that he worked with a witch, he probably really freak out.
After setting down her bag, Lilly check over her patient's records for the last 24hrs. Frowning she asked, "Edward, why was Isabella given sedatives?"
"She started freaking out, even tried to bite the nurses. So we tranked her."
"But why was she given two doses? That is dangerous, especially in her condition."
"She was having a major freak out. The first shot barely even fazed her."
Lilly was angry. Storming into the lab she walked over to Isabella's cage, "Hey sweetie, I am sorry I wasn't here."
Isabella was a chimp that was rescued from her owners who were abusing her; they weren't even supposed to have her. She was then sent to Lillian and The Wildlife Rehabilitation Center.
Isabella was getting agitated and immediately Lilly calmed herself, "I am sorry. I didn't mean to let my emotions spill over."
Lillian had a tendency to let loose her emotions and animals being quite sensitive tended to pick up on them. Sending soothing feelings to Isabella, Lilly checked her memories for the reason why she became so angry yesterday. After seeing what happened she broke contact and left the room. Lilly was furious, how dare that night
technician tease her. She will write a report and see that he was fired.
Just as Lilly sat down at her desk the phone rang. Immediately, Lilly knew something was wrong, “Hello?”
“Hey Lilly, it is Milt. I have a panther that is in some serious need of medical attention.”
“What happened?”
“I am not sure, but a couple of hikers found him. He has been shot many times. In fact, I am surprised he is even still alive. I know you wanted me to call you if I found any animal hurt. You had better hurry, there are those here that want to put him down.”
“NO! Just keep him warm and don’t provoke him if he wakes up. Give me directions to where you are and I will be there.”
After getting the directions, Lilly told Edward to get the operation room ready and she left in one of their ambulances. After about fifteen minutes and scaring Brodie, a lab technician, half to death, Lilly pulled up next to the police cars.
“Lillian, next time I drive.”
“We needed to hurry. Help me get the stretcher and supplies.”
After following a police officer down a trail they came to the scene.
“Lilly, he’s not going to make it,” Brodie said after one look at him.
Lilly knew that Brodie was probably right but she didn‘t say so. Walking slowly forward she asked, “Milt, what’s the news?”
“He is still alive. He hasn’t come to once and I tried to keep him warm.”
Nodding she said, “Thanks Milt.”
Lilly and Brodie put the stretcher down next to the panther and checked out the damage. They knew that they needed to hurry. Starting an ivy and patching him up, Lilly tried to connect with the panther. She didn’t and that worried her. Surely an animal with this many bullet wounds and loss of blood couldn’t survive. Lilly mentally shook herself and forced herself to be positive. She had saved many animals that normally wouldn’t have survived. She would save this one. After putting him on the stretcher Milt asked Lilly to come and look at something.
“I don’t know if this means anything but me and the guys are finding this strange. You see here where the blood starts and trails to where the panther was lying?”
“Yes,“ and then Lilly noticed there were no other tracks around it. It’s like the cat just dropped to the ground there, but that couldn’t be, there were no trees close enough for it to leap down from.
“We found no signs of bullet casings or tracks of any kind except for those of the hikers. We are all finding this quite strange.”
“I find it odd as well. If you find anything more out, let me know. I have to hurry and get him back to the lab.”
“Of course. I hope he makes it and I hope we find who is responsible.”
“Thanks. I will talk to you soon.”
All the way back to the lab and into the operation room, Lilly continued to try to connect with the panther.
“He is a big one,” Edward said at first glance. Then he said, “He won’t survive.”
“Yes he will,” Lilly said with determination.
After hours of surgery, Lilly finally extracted all of the twelve bullets and repaired the damage. She was just thankful none of the bullets hit any of his vital organs. Still, he had lost a lot of blood and she hoped he wouldn’t get infections from all of the wounds.
After he was settled into a cage, Lilly insisted Edward go home, “I will sleep here tonight and watch over Pan.”
“Pan? I don’t know why you name all of the animals that come thru here?”
“Because they are my patients and they are all special. Now go and leave me in peace,” she said, practically pushing him out of the room.
After taking a short break, Lilly ran tests on Pan’s blood to make sure he didn’t have any diseases or signs of infection. What she found was incredible and puzzling. Pan’s blood was totally different than any she had ever seen. She found no traces of any diseases or antibodies that the body usually created to fight them off. Lilly was stumped with what she found. It was like alien or something, but honestly she had never seen alien anything so she just didn’t know what to make of it.
Walking up to Pan’s cage she put her hand thru the bars and laid it on top of his paw. While trying to connect with him, she all of the sudden felt a stirring in her mind. Pan opened his eyes for a brief second and then went unconscious again. But for that brief moment, Lilly saw an intelligence she had never seen in an animal before. Thinking that she was just too exhausted, she went to get some rest.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Haven’t you gone home yet, Lilly?” Edward asked as he came into the lab the following morning.
Lilly was looking through a microscope and motioned for Edward to come, “Edward, come and look at Pan’s blood.”
After looking at Pan’s chart, Edward went straight to the microscope Lilly had been looking through, “Incredible. Are you sure these samples weren’t contaminated or something?”
“I am sure. I have rechecked and reran the tests four times. What do you think?”
“I don’t know, but it is defently not normal.”
“I know,” she said as she looked at the blood sample again.
Edward was excited. He wasn’t positive, but this animal just may be something his grandfather was looking for. Now all he needed to was get Lilly out of the lab, “Why don’t you go home and rest? I will do some tests myself and see what I come up with.”
For some reason Lilly felt uncomfortable with the idea of leaving Pan, “I don’t want to leave, but I will take a break and get something to eat.”
“I wish you would just go home, you look exhausted,“ Edward insisted. Edward needed her to go home. His grandfather would want to come in and look at the panther and he didn’t want Lilly around. She would become suspicious. Should the cat turn out to be a shape shifter, his grandfather would want to take him out of here.
“I will stay Edward, but I will go get some food. I will be back in about fifteen minutes.”
After Lilly left, Edward called his grandfather and made arrangements for him to show up under the pretense of wanting to take him out for lunch. Then he quickly made copies of all the charts and tests and took a couple of vials of blood to give to his grandfather.
Shortly after Lilly returned to the lab, Edward’s grandfather arrived.
“Lilly, I would like to introduce my grandfather Nigel Woodworth, grandfather, this is Dr. Lillian McAdams.”
“How do you do Dr. McAdams?”
Reaching out and shaking his hand, Lilly got an awful feeling, “Fine. It is nice to meet you Mr. Woodworth.”
After Lilly released his hand she had to fight the urge to wipe her hand on her pants.
“Edward, I thought I would stop by and treat you to lunch if you are not busy?”
“That would be great. Would you like a tour of the lab first? We just got an injured panther in yesterday. He was near death but as usual, Lilly saved him.”
Lilly felt sick. Something was not right. In the two years that she had been here not once had Edward’s grandfather ever came by. Sitting down at her desk, Lilly centered herself and very carefully touched her mind with Mr. Woodworth’s and the pain was almost unbearable. Nigel Woodworth was twisted inside. The things he had done in his life were horrible. Lilly seen what he did to that poor werewolf. Lilly wouldn’t have believed it had she not seen his memories. Sifting to the present, Lilly nearly gasped out loud. She saw what Nigel wanted to do with Pan. He wanted to torture him and experiment on him. He wanted another trophy for his wall. Slowly, Lilly broke contact and knew she needed to do something to protect Pan. She watched Edward show his grandfather around and she watched the look of excitement that came over Nigel’s face when he looked at Pan.
As soon as Edward and Nigel left, Lilly made arrangements of taking Pan out of there. She would take him to her house. Pan and her would be safe there. One of the good things about being a witch, only another with magic could possibly get thru her security system. After asking Brodie to get a van ready she went to Pan’s cage.
“Please wake up for me,“ Lilly reached out and touched his mind. Suddenly she sensed him waking.
“I don’t know if you can understand me but you are in danger. Someone I work with thinks you are a shape shifter. I don’t know if you are or not. But I am going to take you to my house and protect you until you are able to take care of yourself. My name is Lilly and I am a witch. You will be safe with me.”
'Thank you,' and then he went back to sleep.
Lilly was shocked. She definitely heard that. Getting Brodie to help her, she soon was on her way home.
