Edward struggled to his feet and staggered left to lean against the wall. He was getting dizzy and his vision was blurring, sure signs that the blood flowing from the deep wound in his abdomen was going to put him down for good soon. Luckily he was at his destination. The hospital was to his right but he continued left.
This had been a private job and he needed to be sure that if the scene was discovered it couldn’t be linked to him. If he stumbled into an ER with at least two bullet holes and a long deep slash in him questions would be asked. The injured assassin made his way into the parking garage and found a dark corner. He slid down the wall and waited.
It took longer than he would have hoped until what he needed finally came into his field of vision, he was weak now. He wasn’t sure he would make it this time. He’d been hurt of jobs before but either he’d had back up to help him or a patented ‘Ted Forester’ excuse handy. With this job there had been no way for his bounty hunting alter ego to take the fall.
With his last bit of strength he pushed himself to his feet and moved forward. The woman that had gotten his attention was fumbling with her keys, lucky for him. Her lily white uniform had called to him like a beacon, he could see an I.D. badge attached to the tote bag she carried, the title ‘Registered Nurse’ on the bottom. She finally got the door open and the sound of an automatic lock system opening all the doors was music to the hurt man’s ears. As quickly as his condition allowed he struggled to the passenger side of the white Subaru. Grabbing the handle he opened the door, throwing himself into the seat.
“What the hell?” Came the startled exclamation. Then she went quiet. He wasn’t sure what she noticed first, the gun or the blood.
“Drive. Now.” He hissed, gun hand steady despite the blood loss.
His eyes were cold and dead, she had no doubt that if she didn’t obey he would shoot her. She started the car and pulled out of her parking spot. She made her way down and out of the garage.
“What’s your name?” Edward asked. She was doing as he said and wasn’t asking him any stupid questions. That endeared her to him more than she would ever know.
“Guerin.” She said, her voice shook slightly and her knuckles were white around the steering wheel.
“Well Guerin, as you can probably tell I’m in need of a bit of medical assistance, and if you’re half as smart as I think you are, you know I can’t go to the hospital. You help me, you survive, got it?”
“Yes.” She answered simply.
“Good girl. Where do you live?”
“Not far. Ten minutes.” She said.
He nodded. “Make it five.”
She didn’t answer but stepped on the gas forcing the car to chug along a bit faster. The thing had to be at least ten years old and a glance at the dashboard told him it had well over a hundred-thousand miles on it.
His vision blacked out for a moment and when it cleared they were pulling into a driveway.
Normally Guerin just parked in the car port by the side door, today she pulled the car all the way around to the back of the house, well out of view of the street. She put it in parked then her ‘guest’ reached over and pulled the keys out of the ignition.
“Slide this way and out this side.” He said pushing open the door and pulling himself from the car.
When she got out he moved into her, putting his free arm around her shoulders and leaning heavily on her. She was only about an inch, maybe less, shorter than him so it made it easy. Guerin led him to the door and after glancing at the doorknob he sorted through her keys and opened it. Once inside she guided him through the dining and living rooms to the back of the house where the guest bedroom was. He practically collapsed on the bed and was still. Guerin looked down at him, he wasn’t moving. She could go for the phone, call for help. She could just run out of the house. Even if he was conscious, the chances of him being able to see straight enough to fire his gun at her were slim to none. From his pallor and the way he’d started shaking when they’d gotten inside he’d lost a lot of blood. But if she ran for it she was almost certain we would die right there. Torn between saving herself and the man before her Guerin shifted from foot to foot. But even as her mind screamed for her to run like hell she found her self moving to the kitchen and getting her first aide kit, then she ran upstairs and snatched up her stitch & staple kit, he’d more than likely need one or both of those. Then she dove for the closet and pulled out the mini-back pack she took with her when she went to get tattooed. Inside was a vial of 2% Lidocaine and some heavy duty pain killers. Then she raced back down to the spare room.
He was exactly where she’d left him. The nurse moved forward, dropping her supplies onto the chest at the end of the bed. Gentle fingers felt his neck and she sighed as she felt a pulse. She jumped when his hand came up and closed around her wrist.
“I’m still here.” He croaked.
“I need you to roll over.” She said.
“You’ll have to help me.” He bit out. It cost him a lot to say those words, but it would have cost him more to attempt it on his own.
He felt gentle cool hands on his arms. He struggled up a bit and slipped an arm around her. She helped him turn over and move up on the bed. Once he was situated she opened the mini-pack and pulled out the pills.
“Are you allergic to anything?” She asked moving across the room to a dorm-sized fridge. She grabbed a water and went back to the bed.
“No.” He murmured.
She opened the pills and let two spill into her hand then she opened the water.
“Here, it’s Demerol.” She said handing him the drug and water.
While he took them she opened her first aid kit and got out a pair of scissors. She took the water from his hand and set it on the bed side table then went to work cutting off his black t-shirt. Once it was open she got her first good look at the wounds. There was a bullet hole in his shoulder and a deep incision going vertically along his left side. It was still bleeding. From the looks of it the bullet had passed through and wasn’t lodged in his body so she ignored that wound for now, the slash was the life-threatening injury right now. She’d deal with that first. She went back to the mini-pack and pulled out the Lidocaine and a syringe.
“This is Lidocaine, it will numb your skin. I’m going to have to put some stitches in your side.” She explained drawing some of the liquid from the vial up into the needle. “I need to get this wound closed or you’re going to bleed to death.” She added as he eyed the needle suspiciously.
“Fine.” He hissed with a nod. He was so dizzy.
She plunged the needle into his side and he jerked but as she pushed in the heavenly solution it only took a few seconds to start to dull the pain. A few minutes and he wouldn’t be feeling anything. Once the Demerol kicked in he’d be just fine and dandy.
Guerin looked at the wound she was about to start stitching up, this was going to be difficult and messy. She have to do inner stitches first, then close it on the outside, with no help or suction she wasn’t sure she could pull this off but she had to try. When the painkillers completely kicked in her patient would be off to lala land until then he’d have to assist her.
“I need you to stretch open this wound.” She told him, moving her hands to the tear in his flesh and opening it with a hand on each side.
He mimicked her movements until she was satisfied. He almost smirked as she pulled on a pair of gloves, she was already covered in his blood and he doubted putting gloves on now would help him any either. But he kept his mouth shut and let her work.
He could no longer feel anything on that side of his abdomen which was just fine by him. She began stitching him up, periodically stopping to dab at the wound with sterile gauze. As she sewed the tissue together the bleeding slowed then stopped. She couldn’t guarantee he hadn’t already lost enough blood to kill him, but barring infection she thought he’d get through this alive.
She finished the inner stitches just in time. His eyelids were drooping and his hands were sliding away as she knotted the thread and cut it off.
“Guerin.” He said softly. She looked up at his face, icy blue eyes were hazy and dilated. “Thank you.”
She wanted to laugh, like she’d really had a choice. She just shook her head and started the outer stitches.
