Raoul brushed her hair away from her face and pressed a kiss against her pale cheek, “I have to go into town today, my love.” He pressed another kiss against her temple.
Christine lay on her side away from him, long dark curls falling in her face. She made a small sound acknowledging his presence, her fingers clinching and unclinching against the bed sheets. Her brown eyes gazed unblinking across the room at the window she hated the fact that she would have to stand, get up and face the day, she hated it almost as much as she hated the life she was living.
The wedding night was nothing like that she had imagined, there was no fire, no real passion, not for her. Often she wondered what it was supposed to be like but as the years passed Christine decided she would perhaps never truly know.
A porcelain doll, perfect in every way a lady should be, quiet and out of the way. Their marriage was not much different, rather then fulfilling her wifely duties Christine would manage his estate and keep a watchful eye on the servants. Her only company was her childhood friend Meg along with her mother Madame Giry.
“Miss Christine,” the voice of her only Negro servant roused her fully, “Master Raoul wanted me to give you this.” She spoke softly bringing a small note to her bedside.
Christine sat up taking the letter, it read: My dear wife, I apologize because our child, my heir, is to be born soon but I must settle the matters of debt that are owed to us. I will return within a month. Take care. She folded the letter putting her hand to her forehead, “Thank you.”

His grip on the reigns tightened. It was Winter exactly five years since he had seen her. Erik, the phantom, clad in all black clothing except for the crimson velvet cape he wore over his shoulders, touched the pale mask against the damaged side of his face. His hair was slick back against his head with oil he was clean shaven and carried a sword against his hip. His jaw tightened painfully as he drew nearer, the mansion was in plain view, he knew that her husband was away, he’d planned this for years.

She gazed into the mirror at her flawless reflection, her hands rested on her round belly holding a child she wasn’t ready for.
“You are very lucky,” Madame Giry said buttoning up the back of her dress, “Men don’t do well in child birthing it’s best he will not be around.”
Christine nodded, “I know....”
“Get some rest child, you’re not looking well these days.” Giry left her alone.
She touched the mirror, closing her eyes. When she was alone the doubts returned and she dared to wonder what her life would be like if she had chosen differently. If she had gone with him. A man she hadn’t not spoken of but in her dreams and private thoughts had touched and had been touched by. Even now she could still feel his hands on her as they danced together in front of thousands that fateful night, she could still feel his lips in the heated kisses they shared before she had left him alone to die.
At dinner she ate in silence while Meg chattered away about her new ballet classes.
The Negro servant came into the room, “Christine, there’s a man at the door he says he’s come a long way to see you.”
Raoul wouldn’t have the debtors come here. She froze for a moment, No. It couldn’t be. “ What does this man look like?”
“He’s very tall in all black with a white mask should I let him in, Miss?”
She stared at Madame Giry in shock. It couldn’t be!
Meg shook her head, terrified she stood up, “Send him away! He’s a murderer! Call the police!”
Giry shouted, “Silence!” She looked at Christine then at the servant girl, “Have him go to the library Christine will join there momentarily.” The old woman looked across the table at her daughter, “Finish your dinner and go to bed this none of your affair.”
Once the girl had left Christine spoke, “You knew he was coming didn’t you?”
“Child, what are you talking about?”
“Raoul told me all about it, you know him and never once did you care that he was brain washing me.” It was all lies. She didn’t truly feel that way but with Meg around to report any problems Christine couldn’t be too careful. She finished her dinner without another word and made her way towards the library her heart pounding with a mixture of nervousness and excitement.

He was lounging in an armchair when he heard the turn of the door handle. Erik stood preparing himself to see her again, she entered the room quietly. He could not conceal his surprise at her appearance she was pale and thin all except her stomach that seemed to be sucking all of her life from her. “Christine...”
“What are you doing here?”
He didn’t answer her, Erik brushed his knuckles against her cheek tears filled his eyes behind the mask.
“Still wearing the gloves..”
Five years of planning his moment of revenge had been all for nothing. He’d wanted to destroy her and make her suffer for the pain in his heart that she had caused. This little devil was another dagger in his bleeding heart despite all of that, now she was big and polluted with another man’s child, a man that knew from the beginning that she had belonged to him. Knowing all of this Erik still felt himself going mad with tenderness for the women before him. He watched her pale throat contract and relax from heavy swallow most likely from nervousness.
Her eyes were now glassy as they stared into his, she didn’t flinched against his touch, “You’ve come to kill me haven’t you?” Her voice was soft, unafraid.
Erik shook his head.
“Speak to me!” Christine shouted jerking away from him tears burning her eyes. “You come back after five years just to stare at me, the genius that destroyed the opera house, the angel of music that haunted me ever since I was a little girl. What do you want from me?”
“I want you to come away with me.” He said finally. “I had every intention to come here and kill you to get revenge on you and your foolish husband.”
Christine trembled.
“But I can’t do it.” Erik let out a shaky sigh and stared at her for a long time and looked away admiring the room around them. “Are you happy with him?”
“He’s everything I could ever want he’s given me everything I could ever need and more.”
“That’s not what I asked, Christine. I asked if you were happy with him.”
She looked down at her belly and rubbed it gently, “I don’t sing anymore if that’s what you’re asking.”
Erik looked up at her again, “I know......I’ve missed hearing your voice.”
I’ve missed you’re lessons. She thought silently but didn’t speak up. “I’m having a son, Raoul’s son. I can’t be having this conversation with you, Erik.”
He frowned and moved towards her.
“What are you doing?” She backed away until she was against the closed door, “Erik?!”
His gloved hands came up to her shoulders giving them a light squeeze as he pressed his lips against hers.
Christine let out a moan of protest, her arms as if with a mind of their own came up to wrap around his neck, she gave him back all of the passion he’d given her with her mouth. She felt his hands move down to her full breasts tender and swollen from the milk they carried she cried out against his hot mouth as he squeezed them.
Erik pulled away from her, her eyes were glazed over, his hands moved down to her stomach. “This should have been mine.” His whispered sadly.
Her heart pounded. Erik.... “I’m sorry.”
The phantom pulled away from her and as quickly as he came into her life he was gone again.
