As Sampson led me out onto the beach I tried to quell my nervousness. At first when he told me he'd like to have sex in the water, I had considered it a pretty tame request and agreed. But there was bathtub sex and then there was this. He wanted to make love in the sea- not in-the-water-but-feet-touching-the-bottom sea, but way the hell out where only merpeople swim. I had had major doubts, but finally curiosity and some very sweet coaxing on his part won out, and here we were.

We set up a towel on the beach and stripped down to our bathing suits. I was glad I didn't need to see what I was doing, because I much preferred to watch him. He was facing the water, his back turned to me, and when he let the button-down shirt slide down his shoulders I caught my breath. His shoulders were broad but not too much- just right. His arms were nicely shaped and his back more muscular than most men's. He unfastened his pants and slid them slowly down, revealing the flawless angles and curves from the breath of his shoulders to his narrow waist, down lean hips and well-toned legs, and finally his feet. I never thought I could find even a man's feet sexy, but damned if his weren't. The so-alluring view of his trim swimmer's body was impeded only by his silky blue swim trunks. He would prefer to have nothing between him and the water, but this was a public beach, and sadly most Americans are not as open-minded about public nudity as some countries. It was a shame, because seeing him like this and knowing what yumminess those shorts obscured made me wish there was nothing hiding his body.

He stretched a little, running his fingers through his hair, and I was fascinated by the tempting play of muscles under the skin that made my fingers itch to explore it. He gave me a coy glance over one shoulder, his hazel eyes sparkling, and I knew he had known I was watching. A blush flared across my cheeks and I glared at him, but he grinned undauntedly and came over to me, sliding his hands onto my waist and pulling me close. "I love when you look at me like that," he murmured in my ear.

"You did that on purpose," I accused, a little too breathless to sound convincingly angry.

He laughed quietly. "I wouldn't want you to get cold feet, would I?" He nuzzled my ear. "I want to make sure you stay nice and warm for me," he added meaningfully.

I wasn't the only one noticing his attractiveness; over his shoulder I saw a blonde, bikinied spring-break type riveted watching him, probably unaware that she was gaping slightly. I gave her a narrow stare over his shoulder until she blushed and looked away. Normally I wasn't the jealous type, but the lustful stares he got sometimes brought out my inner alpha bitch.

My annoyance making me a bit nervier, I slid my hands over his sides and down his waist. "Talk is cheap, lover," I murmured back, and felt his laughter under my hands.

Then he pulled back a little and the heat in his eyes made my smile fade and my body respond. "Shall we?"

We walked hand-in-hand into the ocean.

When we got out into shoulder-deep water, it was my turn to put up or shut up. I had seen his mer-form before, but I was about to get very up close and personal with it. He closed his eyes and his skin paled to a whitish-ivory. He dropped his head to my shoulder, a shudder raking his body. I saw gills slits develop on his neck, and his hands on my waist now had webbed fingers. He opened his eyes and my discomfort was overcome by desire like a sandcastle washed away by the waves. I had looked into his solid black siren eyes countless times while our bodies came together, enough that one glance from those eyes immediately made me think sex.

"Are you ready for this?" he asked. I knew how much he wanted it, but he was still giving me a chance to back out. It reminded me why he meant so much to me.

"Let's do it," I told him, "although," I added playfully, "I could use a little of that warming up right now."

"It is my pleasure to grant a lady's request," he purred in a tone that implied far more than the courtly phrasing. His hands slid up my bare back and warmth spread through me from everywhere he touched, his magic like a thrill shooting through my body. Suddenly the slightly chilly water felt wonderfully cool, a sensual contrast to the heat of his body. Was this how the sea always felt to mer-people? If so, wow.

"Hold on tight," he told me.

"For practical reasons or lascivious ones?" I teased him.

"Both," he grinned. He turned and I wrapped my arms around him. I'm a good swimmer, but not nearly in his class. We moved swiftly and smoothly through the water, and I enjoyed the flow of it over my skin almost as much as the feel of his body under me. Almost.

He brought us to a large rock that rose several feet above the water. I took hold of it and tried not to think about how far down the water went. I could probably get myself back to shore, but it still took a lot of trust on my part to let him bring me out this far.

"Hey," he said quietly, one finger on my chin turning my face up to him. "Stay with me here."

"Where else am I going to go?" I quipped, pretending to misunderstand, and he smiled.

"Nowhere, because I've got you right where I want you," he informed me in a sexy growl, dipping his head to nuzzle my neck. His hands traced my curves and he gave me a gentle nip, making me shiver. He began to lower the straps of my bathing suit, but was hampered by my upraised arm holding on to the rock. "You're going to have to let go if you want me to get this off you."

I laughed nervously. "There's a little problem with that..."

"Trust me," he murmured, nuzzling and nipping at my earlobe now. His knee nudged between mine and up, moving my legs apart until I sat astride his muscular thigh, propped up between the rock and him. I inhaled sharply at the sensation of him pressed against me so intimately. "See? I won't let you sink."

Slowly I released my death grip on the rock, catching hold of his shoulders instead. I glanced down at my hands; the male loveliness under them made a very nice distraction from my nervousness. I loosened my hold so I could run my hands over the smooth, slick skin of his shoulders. The seawater beaded there just begged to be licked off. I leaned forward and applied my tongue in soft flicks over his skin, tasting him under the saltiness of the sea. He slipped his fingers under the straps of my bathing suit and guided them down my shoulders, and I let out a short moan as my hardened nipples brushed against his bare chest.

"That's better, isn't it?" he murmured coaxingly. He slid his hands down my arms, encouraging me to drop them so he could slide the straps the rest of the way off.

"Mmm," I answered, more a sound than a word. He peeled the tight spandex down, and as my skin was bared to the water I realized there were small currents of warmer water curling through the cool. I closed my eyes and let out my breath, enjoying the sensual luxury of the play of temperature over my skin, caressing me like a lover. Bathing suits were really overrated.

"Hold on to my shoulders," he instructed. I complied, but pouted a little when his leg eased out from between mine. He slid the bathing suit down my legs and put it securely over the top of the rock, then replaced his knee under me and I let out my breath in a groan. The contrasts in the soft play of water plus the heat of him made my skin feel suddenly much more sensitive, every nerve keenly awaiting his touch. His hands brushed lightly up my sides as if he knew how much each touch of skin affected me. He gently cupped my breasts, thumbs brushing across my nipples, and I made a sound in my throat like a gasp.

"God, you're responsive," he marveled. "I knew you would like this, but I never thought you would take to it so well."

"You're surprised by me taking to a new kind of sex like a fish to water?" I chuckled.

"Oh, I ought to punish you for that one," he groaned.

"Promises, promises." Feeling more secure, I slipped my hands under the water to caress down his sides. I brought my hands up to mirror his, thumbs toying with his flat nipples, then smoothing my palms over them. I sidled closer, pressing myself against him and sliding my hands around to explore the delightful expanse of his back while we kissed.

He gave me a quick grin and slipped downward into the water, removing my support and making me yelp and grab for the rock. He caught me around the waist, his mouth just below the surface to replace his hands on my breasts.

"You do that again and you are going to be in more trouble than you can sex your way out of," I threatened.

"Sounds like a challenge to me," he said, his eyes sparkling wickedly, and I gave him an evil look. He submerged completely then rose out of the water again, the water streaming down his face and body, and gazed at me from under his eyelashes, his slicked-back hair making his dark eyes and handsome features that much more striking. It was amazing how he could switch from sexy lover to sweet boy-next-door cute in the blink of an eye, even in mer-form. "You're not really angry at me, are you?" He pulled me closer, his expression concerned, and kissed me gently and sweetly. "I do apologize most humbly if I offended you," he murmured against my lips.

I gave him the glare he had nicknamed my "we are not amused" look, but I couldn't entirely mean it. His penitent act wouldn't have worked except that there was real sincerity in his eyes- I was only playing, I didn't mean any harm. I'll make it up to you.

I sighed, an unwilling smile pulling at my mouth. Enough water had run out of his hair that it was regaining its curl, and I slid my fingers into those curls to resume and deepen the kiss. He moved closer, catching the rock in both hands, not pressing too much, just his body against mine to keep me from sliding down while leaving my hands free to touch him. He opened his mouth for me, his tongue caressing mine, and heat shot through my body, making me tense against him. "What offends me," I murmured, "are these shorts. If you really want to make amends, get them out of my way."

"As my lady commands," he murmured back. He moved back a little, a hand on my waist keeping me in place until I got a handhold on the rock, then slipped partly under the surface, coming back up with the swim trunks in his hand and tossing them onto the rock with my suit.

I slipped back into his embrace, my hands smoothing appreciatively down his back from his shoulders all the way down to his well-shaped derriere. His eyes, which had returned to his normal hazel in his consternation, now bled back to the black of his passion. He caught my earlobe lightly between his teeth, then kissed and nibbled his way down my neck while my hands traced over the planes of his body. After all the times we had made love, I still found him as sensuous and arousing as the first time. We explored each other in a leisurely fashion, the water adding an extra dimension to the tactile gratification.

"Did you know," he murmured with his lips hovering just over my skin, "that the cowrie shell has been a symbol of femininity for centuries?"

"Really," I said with breathless excitement that had nothing to do with shell legends.

"Mmmhmm," he replied, and the vibration on my skin sent another small dart of excitement through me. "Know why?"

"Mm mm," I replied, trying to focus on his words through the haze of sensation. I ran my nails lightly across his back and a shiver ran through him.

"Because of its resemblance to a woman," he planted small kisses along my bosom. "Or rather, to a certain rather delightful part of a woman."

"Is that so?" I ran my fingers through his hair as he kissed down my body.

"It is so," he murmured. "This part..." He sank out of sight, his hands caught my hips, and I let out a soft cry when he found his target, not with his hands but with his mouth. His tongue slipped skillfully into my folds and I grabbed blindly for the rock not out of fear of sinking but simply for something to hold on to while Sampson gave me a very thorough lesson in the benefits of a lover who didn't have to come up for air.

Just as I was approaching the shivering edge of my climax, he came up out of the water again and I seized him like a woman drowning, kissing him as if he were the very air I needed. I wrapped my legs around his waist and he took the hint, pressing me between his body and the rock and slowly guiding himself into me. I let out a small whimper of need. As he sank into me fully, it penetrated my lust-clouded mind that something felt different. I moved back a little to look at him.

His voice was a little breathless when he answered my unspoken question. "Remember when you said you might not be able to do this for long because the water washes away your natural lubrication?"

"Yes..."

He smiled, a little shyly and yet so sexy. "In mer-form we're adapted to mate in water."

"That's why you're..." his hips flexed and I promptly forgot what I was saying, lust making my mind fuzzy and my body tight.

"Slipperier? Mmhmm," his eyes traced over my face, a small smile curving his mouth at my obvious pleasure. "I didn't mention it because I wasn't sure how much it would help you."

"It helps," I said with great feeling. "It definitely helps. Ooooh, don't stop." I clutched at him, digging my nails in a little just the way he liked.
"Oh yes..." He groaned and drove into me again. I dragged my fingernails down his back and his reaction was intense and immediate, a shudder working its rapid way down his body. "Ooh, if you keep doing that I won't last long..." he warned breathily.

"Are you a siren or aren't you?" I murmured wickedly. At this rate I would be ready for another round, and thanks to his siren heritage, he was unquestionably up to the job.

He laughed quietly. "I think I've created a monster."

"Rowr," I teased.

He braced me more firmly and began a faster pace. "Speaking of monster..." he said, and released another siren power. I gasped and cried out as his accumulated hunger of our time apart flooded into me, and I swooped to kiss him as our need became much more urgent.

He was powerful yet careful, but I was in no mood for careful. "Faster, please, Sampson please..." I gasped, his moans of passion driving me ever closer to fulfillment. He complied eagerly, his breath panting in my ear. Two strokes, three, more, and the pleasure immersed us both like a breaker wave crashing over us. Fulfillment washed through me and I knew he felt it as well: his siren's hunger finally, if temporarily, sated.

I held him and stroked his hair as he slumped against me, both of us laughing in satisfaction and sheer delight.

Much later we emerged from the water holding hands. Conscious of the crowd of beachgoers around us, we restrained ourselves to shared secret smiles while we gathered our things. As we walked toward the car, he paused to pick something up from the sand, waiting until we had deposited our burdens in the car to hold out his hand and offer me his find- a cowrie shell.

"Call it a memento," he smiled as he bent to kiss me. "Thank you," he whispered in my ear.

"Anytime," I said, with enough enthusiasm that we both laughed. "In fact, I don't have any plans for next weekend, how about you?"

He considered that for a second, then gave me his trademark Sampson grin. "I do now."
