Chapter one: In Deep Fudge
Willy Wonka paced his office, racking his brains. He needed advice. Right now, he regretted the fact that he had very few contacts in the outside world, other than the numerous vendors all over the world, that supplied the various ingredients used in his candies and confections. Until recently, he had lived a life of solitude, taking his satisfaction from the creation of his wonderful candy and the companionship of his beloved Oomph Loompas.
Unfortunately, he needed help, in a big way. In a way that the Oomph Loompas could not provide. And it seemed the only people that he could go to for advice, were the Bucket family or his father.
Willy Wonka needed security, or more precisely protection. Following the end of his world-famous contest for an heir, Wonka began receiving threatening mail. Letters, that he had at first completely ignored. He had, of course, been the recipient of hate mail in the past, being world famous and all. However, these notes were far more frequent and disturbing in their content. As the mail continued to arrive, it became increasingly offensive and alarming. Willy had, at first, simply been annoyed by these ridiculous messages. His anxiety mounted with the arrival of every letter.
The writer, who was clearly insane, blamed Willy for all the world’s ills, especially his or her own. Several the of the letters alluded to the writer’s belief that Wonka’s factory should have been theirs. The letters made it clear that the writer believed Willy Wonka had prevented them from becoming the success they were destined to be. They had even accused Willy of stealing their ideas. “As if,” thought Willy.
Things grew steadily worse when the vandalism began. It started with graffiti on the outside walls and rubbish thrown over the gates into the entry yard. The vandal left no clues and the security cameras were destroyed. The perpetrator demanded that Willy Wonka close his factory and acknowledge himself as a fraud.
When neither of those things happened, things really went downhill. Several shipments being sent to other countries were stolen or destroyed. Twice, trucks leaving the factory with deliveries, in the early morning hours, were sabotaged. It was discovered that their tires had been shot out with some kind of gun. Fortunately the drivers were unharmed, however, several of them refused to return to work. Willy could not blame them. Guns took things into a far different realm.
With the addition of weapons, came the addition of death threats. “Die candy-man, Die” threatened the latest letter. “Heavens,” thought Willy. “I’m really in deep fudge now. I‘m an artist not a warrior. I haven‘t the foggiest idea how to deal with this….this…..kind of madness. I mean, for chocolate‘s sake, I’m Willy Wonka, people love me. ”
Willy, had of course called in the local authorities. The town in which the chocolate factory was located, was small (more like a village, really), and the police force there was limited. An investigation was indeed underway, however, little progress had been made. It was becoming obvious that the culprit was not only completely bonkers but also smart, a dangerous combination.
The police were providing as much protection as they could, and the factory was as secure a building as any, but Willy was growing increasingly alarmed. It was one thing to be concerned about his own wellbeing, but he had Charlie and the other Buckets to worry about, not to mention his Oompa Loompas. If harm came to anyone of them, Willy knew he would simply die. It was up to him to keep that from happening.
Willy had taken the step of hiring armed security to protect the factory and its inhabitants, which, had been a big step for him considering he still harbored a deep mistrust of outsiders. The security personnel were, of course, restricted from entering the main factory.
For a while things had seemed calmer. Then it happened. One night, the security guards at the front gates were attacked without warning. An intruder had somehow breeched the gates, and canisters spewing tear gas were lobbed at the startled guards. One of the guards managed to set off the alarm as he was overcome with the fumes, and the intruder managed to escape.
Police could only speculate as to the intruder’s intentions, but Willy knew he was the target. Now, here he was wracking his brains to find some solution to his problems
