It was a relaxing lazy spring evening, the cicadas filled the air with music, the moon was full in a cloudless sky, and a cool breeze fluttered thru the trees. I adjusted my satchel as I walked down the block on my regular evening stroll, cars driving by on the busy street. I reached my favorite side road, a winding drive through a wooded park, and I decided to take a stroll and look at the stars from the shore of a large lake in the woods.
I sat on the sandy beach looking at the stars. I could see so many constellations, I could see shooting stars, and even satellites as they moved across the sky. I had always been interested in many thing in school last year including astronomy, mythology, science, almost anything except anthropology and acting. I hated those. As I reflected on my astronomy class and that cute chicks ass who sat in front of me, I noticed that there was a very bright shooting star coming right for me. I watched it intently, these things weren't supposed to be around for long after hitting the atmosphere. I watched as it lowered down, and streaked right past the top of the tree I was sitting near. It was glowing a very bright yellow, and apparently breaking apart since small glowing pieces seemed to be flying off it like dust.
It landed off near a small building a little ways away. I got up and ran, hoping that I could find an actual meteorite for my astronomy class starting next month. It would be a great specimen if it survived intact. I ran up to the still glowing spot in a bush next to the outhouse, parted the branches and... and... it wasn't a meteorite at all... it was a fairy... and what a fairy! I thought to myself, “I must be hallucinating or something”, because lying unconscious in the bush was a spitting image of Tinkerbell!
I just sat there staring at her... she was obviously exhausted and completely out or energy. I had to do something to help her. I'll be honest, part of me wanted to show her off, take her on the road, make a shit load of money. However, that is a very small part of me. I grabbed my camera bag from my satchel, placed the camera back in the satchel and scooped up Tinkerbell. I then placed her gently in the camera bag and hung it around my neck so I could watch her in case she woke up. I had to get home... I could probably find a make shift bed for her or something... perhaps my old cigar box with some cotton padding or something.
I walked home careful to avoid the area of my route that tended to have people around. I didn't want to have to explain my glowing camera bag. Once inside I locked the door, drew the curtains, and laid Tinkerbell on a pillow on my bed. I scrounged around, but couldn't find my cigar box. I then realized I had put it in my safe deposit box with my coin collection.
I stood looking at Tinkerbell, watching her breathing as she lay on my pillow. How the hell did she end up here? I mean, Peter Pan, Neverland, Capitan Hook... and Tinkerbell... they were all a fairy tale right? They didn't actually exist... still, I could not disregard the evidence sleeping on my bed. I took a seat in my over stuffed recliner across from my bed. I didn't want to wake Tinkerbell and possibly ruin what this magic was that made her real.
I'll be honest here. I had a crush on Tinkerbell when I was a kid... puppy love and such. I was 6 when Peter Pan came out on tape, I loved watching the little beauty fly around the screen and do her pantomime. However the following year I think I hit the “girls are icky” phase of my growing up. You know, this might present a problem... I have always been horrible at charades, and whatever magic Peter had to understand Tinkerbell, I did not have. Then again, for all I knew, I was dreaming.
I stayed up that whole night, watching her. Not in the creepy way mind you, I was trying to figure out what actually happened and how this was possible. My only explanation was that the world was more complex and beautiful than I had thought, and many of the stories we all grow up with might be real or have happened at some point.
I mean, when I got addicted to the Myst games, who's to say those worlds don't actually exist in some form in some alternate dimension? If Tinkerbell was real, did that mean Peter would be coming for her, or was he possibly dead and she left the place that reminded of him? I honestly couldn't say, but it worried me. She was exhausted... so if she came from Neverland, she had left in a hurry. That did saddle me with a bit of responsibility... if she had nobody left to be with... I couldn't let her go with nobody to go to... but it's not like I could talk about it much if she stayed with me. I mean, having a fairy live with me sounds like a 24/7 fantasy world... though something about it just seemed like a permanent secret.
The next morning I decided to re-watch Peter Pan, just to brush up on my knowledge of the story and world. It might make her a bit more comfortable (especially if she was to spend a long time with me) if I knew about her world a bit more than just my fading childhood memories. I sat there, watching the movie... everything was exactly as i remembered it, except Tinkerbell wasn't in any scene. The view changed, and everyone acted just like they should, but there was no Tinkerbell at all... and I knew then that something very strange had happened.
I walked to my room and sat back down in my over recliner. I watched Tinkerbell for a few minutes, it was odd. I was used to seeing her as a 2d painted person, a trick of light, paint, and plastic. Yet, here was a living, breathing, soft, and warm creature before me, lying there on my pillow.
As I watched her she rolled onto her side and her eyes slowly opened. She stretched, rubbed her eyes and then sat up wide eyed, looking around very panicked. I couldn't move... what was I to do? I didn't want to frighten her further by going towards her... I just kept watching her... She got up and flew to the window, trying to open it for a few seconds. She then turned around and just looked at me quizzically.
I just stared at her “It's okay, I'm not going to hurt you” I found myself saying suddenly.
She turned and looked out the window, then looked at pillow she'd slept on for almost a whole day. Then turned to look at me again.
“You flew/fell into a bush and were knocked out I guess, so I brought you here and let you sleep. You've been out cold since yesterday.” She nodded slowly while looking around the room. She flew down in front of my face and pantomimed grabbing a dagger from her belt and fighting with it. Then she made the shape of a triangle hat on her head.
“Peter?” I asked
She nodded.
“He's not here.” I replied. She gave me a look that said “I know that.” I felt a little stupid, “Sorry, continue. I assume Peter was fighting.”Again she nodded.
Then she made a hook with her hand. “He was fighting with Captain Hook, no surprise.”
She made the Peter motion again and pointed to me. “I'm Peter?” She nodded, and then swung her hand in the shape of hook right into my chest stopping against me. I felt a sinking in my gut, “Peter's dead?” I asked with sadness on my voice. She nodded and started to sadly fly back to the pillow.
“Tinkerbell I'm sorry, I can see why you left Neverland now.” She sat on the pillow and just looked at me sadly and nodded. “Is there anything I can do?” She shook her head no... then yes. “What can I do?” She pointed to herself, then to the house, and me, and hugged herself. “You want to stay here?” She nodded. “You do know there's a story, a movie, about Peter Pan here, and since you showed up you've not been in that story.” She gave me the strangest look. “Come with me my dear.” and I got up and walked into the living room.
We sat there, watching the video. She was amazed by it, and at one point tried to fly into the screen until she got close and saw it wasn't real. She seemed sad, but happy at the same time, it was quite odd. However, she did do something unexpected... when a part of the movie came up she was supposed to be in she blew some dust at the TV, and suddenly, on the screen was the animated Tinkerbell I had loved so many years ago... while sitting next to me was the living version. My mouth hung open... it was an amazing show of the magic my everyday life lacked up until the night before. She flew up, kissed my bottom lip, and then made the motion of going to sleep and flew back into the bedroom.
To be honest, that wasn't the worst idea ever, I hadn't slept all night... but something about her kiss was odd... like a tiny spark of energy...then again, I'd never been kissed by a fairy before. I sat there for a few more minutes before going to my room. Tinkerbell was already sound lying on the pillow by the head board, luckily I had just upgraded to a double bed, so there was room for a pillow for me as well. I went into the bathroom, changed into pajamas (kind of rare for me, my ex got me into sleeping nude), and brushed my teeth and such. For some reason my lip still tingled a little, but it felt good actually. I exited the bathroom to find Tinkerbell floating in front of me. She flew forward and embraced my chest. I cupped my hand under and around her, holding there for a second looking at her.
“Is that for me rescuing you and letting you stay here?” She looked away for a second and then nodded with a smile. “Well, you're welcome, you can stay here as long as you want, I most certainly do not mind having you around.” She flew up to my face and kissed my cheek this time. Once more I got a tiny spark of energy from this. I couldn't help but laugh. I climbed into bed, under the covers, and opened my nightstand drawer. She laid down on the pillow, and I took a handkerchief from the drawn and covered her.
“Good night my dear. Pleasant dreams.”
She blew a kiss at me and turned over. My what an affectionate person she was.
I turned off the light, smiled at her glow bathing the room so slightly in the darkness, and let sleep overtake me.
