Disclaimer: I do not own the series Vampire Hunter D, the fine gentleman Hideyuki Kikuchi does. I do not make any money off of this work; I am merely passing the time until his next book comes out.
A/N: Hey all, finally decided to try my hand writing some more. I don’t know if I’ll decide to further butcher the fine art that is the original D series by adding citrus to this story, but be assured that if I do for some reason, you’ll be well warned in advance. The rating is for strong language and violence.
Hunter of Gods
Deep within the vast woods that made up much of the frontier darkness had fallen, as impenetrable and thick as the aura surrounding the one who dared disturb the silence that lay so thickly upon the land. Though pine needles, dead leaves and tree roots made up the forest path, the ring of the horse’s hooves was so invasive in the still air that it clanged with all the intensity of a bell at midday. Not a creature was stirring, not even the monstrous mutants and beasts that frequently lurked in this region and kept all travelers out of the forest at night. All that is, save a precious few who were above the petty dangers presented by slathering fangs and claws.
Surely the youth cloaked in black riding the path that night noticed the abnormal stillness, the lack of activity from the normal nocturnal beasts. Indeed, he would have been a fool not to have, or at least no more a fool than he already seemed for braving this way by night. Appearances however, can be vastly deceiving. A foolish man might have thought the gorgeous youth little more than a passing street entertainer; a wise man would have known the abnormal beauty and the intense, hard look in his eyes belonged to that of a Hunter, and not just any Hunter but that of a descendant of the Nobility.
Said eyes were now gazing at the tree shrouded sky calmly, analytically scanning for any hint of danger. His cyborg horse had grown restless the further they had penetrated the forest, dark patches of lather forming on its flanks, illuminated by the occasional spear of moonlight breaking through the canopy above. The wind had until recently been dead, and now began to restlessly kick up the dead leaves around him, rattling the branches and bemoaning this traveler in a weary voice. Finally sensing that his horse had reached its limit he guided it to the side of the road, and in one fluid motion dismounted, landing silently. Tying the reins securely to a branch he stepped back onto the path and waited.
The air had grown quite heavy and still, oppressive even in such a manner that most human would find unbearably stifling. Not this rider though, who seemed to push the shrouding air back with a strange aura of his own, so coldly clear and precise that it cut this thick cloud of unease like a knife. His horse was well accustomed to this aura he threw off, an aura that dropped most men to their knees in terror and made women into stupefied, lovesick girls. Indeed, his steed had been through many an odd time or battle with him, and was well used to strange happenings. The one thing it could not be conditioned to though, no matter how many times it was exposed was the touch of the pure Nobility. If this youth could terrify men and stupefy women, then one of his descendants could surely simply kill with a flare of this ghastly presence.
The signal to end the quiet night abruptly broke the silence in the form of a beastly howl, trumpeting forth from the throat of something that sounded vaguely like a hound, or perhaps a wolf. Several more of the beast took up the cry, baying for their masters as the faint but rapidly growing sound of branches thrashing and snapping could be heard, followed by the pounding of hooves.
Something crashed through the trees a moment later to the youth’s right. Though the moonlight hardly penetrated here at the forest floor he could still see quite well in the dim light. A ragged looking cyborg horse stumbled through the trees, falling to its knees in the path, flanks heaving and covered in seat. A small figure upon its back lashed it desperately with a crop, driving the animal’s own fear to a fever pitch as it flung itself upward once more, sending pine needles and leaves flying as it dashed madly towards the tree line. The youth stood unnoticed in the shadows by the side of the rode as a trio of massive hound like beasts broke through the trees behind the horse and rider.
The rider seemed to hang onto its mount with a sort of grim determination, etched into the lines of their posture even as the horse came crashing to the ground and started to roll to its side, a pair of hounds worrying its flank and leg. Springing from the horse the rider sprinted away, leaving the animal to its fate. The third beast barked furiously at the attempted escapee, bounding forward to cut off their path from the tree line and herding them back into the road. Whatever this Nobility bred beast was, it was semi intelligent, because it herded its prey back towards the other two so they could encircle the person without harming it. The reason as for why it should want to do this became abruptly clearly as a shadow silently slipped from the trees. The master had arrived.
A sleek cyborg horse, darker than the most pitch black night stepped into the clearing, holding a man whose presence would have been awe inspiring had it not been mainly terrifying. Though his features were shrouded in the night’s deep shadows- at least to human eyes anyway- a pair of gleaming fangs could be seen sliding past his chin. This elicited the first real response from the victim- a scream of absolute, horrified despair. The Noble dismounted from his horse and leisurely approached what had been identified by the scream as a woman, who attempted to back away only to be halted by the growling and snarling beasts snapping at her heels.
Seemingly for the first time, someone seemed to notice the youth, who was now standing by his horse once more, softly stroking it to calm it in the noble’s presence. Frowning, the beautiful noble halted his stalking of the young woman to cast the youth a penetrating glare. He spoke after a moment, his lips curling up in a sneer of obvious disdain and disgust.
“And who might you be Dhampir, to be wandering the night so carelessly?”
The youth tilted his head up, revealing the eyes underneath the brim of his wide traveler’s hat as he glared in kind at the Noble.
“D.”
It was softly spoken, and if one blinked they might have missed the brief answer, short as it was. It meant something to the Noble though apparently, because his pale complexion seemed to become even paler to D’s trained eye. Baring his fangs at D in what might be suggested as a frustrated snarl, he took a step closer to his intended victim.
“Do you intend to interfere with my hunt, Vampire Hunter D?”
D shrugged his shoulders and started to turn back towards his horse. “Do as you like.”
This seemed to take the Noble completely by surprise, but he recovered from the shock quickly. Quickly enough in fact, that he crossed the distance between the young lady and himself in the blink of an eye, his cloak coming alive of its own accord and wrapping around the young woman as if it were a straight jacket. Grasping her chin tightly he pushed her head firmly in one direction, revealing the porcelain pale, smooth skin of her unblemished throat. Lowering his head leisurely, he breathed in the heady scent of her terror, which spiked at the feeling of his hot breath washing over her. Tilting his face towards the hunter he smirked at him.
“Really now? That seems out of character for a hunter of your caliber. Isn’t this what you live for? Hunting my kind and stopping people from becoming victims?”
D had finished untying his horse from the tree at this point, and was remounting the petrified animal as the Noble spoke.
“It’s not my concern. I am merely passing through on my way to the next village at the urgent request of a client.”
He urged his fidgeting horse onto the road and started towards the odd party sitting in the middle of it. He allowed the animal to stop when he was even with the Noble, who was dragging the poor girl back towards his horse.
“A wise move Hunter. I just don’t understand why these tributes can’t just accept their fate and come to the castle. They always insist upon trying to run, or hire hunters…”
D urged his horse past the Noble, letting his back face the man. His low response was somehow still clearly audible, for all the frigidity it relayed.
“We will be meeting again.”
As he was moving once more to leave, the malevolent intent of the Noble was focused entirely upon him, allowing the mesmerized woman a chance to speak.
“Wait! Stop please! You have to help me!”
D didn’t falter once, continuing to ride away from the scene. Somehow he seemed to sense the object the woman desperately hurled at him, his left hand stretching up in the darkness to snatch it effortlessly from the air amidst a faint ‘chinging’ noise. A second later the Noble subdued her; D lowered his left arm to rest by his waist as he continued on his way, not even hesitating as the road forked. Moving his horse onto the left path, he heard the pounding of hooves as the Noble and his hounds went streaking down the right fork.
A hoarse voice echoed up from the palm of his left hand.
“Just like that you’re going to leave her to the clutches of that Noble without a fight? Sheesh, I always knew you were cold hearted D, but even I didn’t think you were that frigid.”
The monologue was cut off by a sharp squeezing of his hand into a fist and a quiet command of “Silence”.
Opening the small sack the woman had tossed him, he revealed to his left hand a small fortune in gold, and a small, oddly shaped talisman. It seemed to be broken in half in some manner, a fact which was quickly proven as D fished something out of his pocket and compared it to this new piece.
“It’s the same. So that was her then?” His left palm queried, a small face forming with tightly knitted brows. “You just let your employer get carried off by the Noble you were hired to protect her from?”
“It was inevitable. Her message did not reach me in time, and it would be foolish to intercede now in full darkness. She has the opportunity of recovering once I have slain him, in the day.”
He clenched his fist again tightly to silence it, drawing a muffled shout of protest. The hunter continued through the forest, arriving at the edge just as the day began to break, the dawn’s light spilling over the distant mountains as a small village was revealed down below in a sedate little valley. Yes, there would be time enough to save the woman yet.
