Things had changed, and changed greatly. Hooks pirate ship had been captured by Peter Pan and the lost boys. Never land had grown cold as ice once again with it’s favorite occupant gone into the mortal world. It seemed as if Hook had been defeated, his pirates scattered or killed. Things had never looked brighter for Good in it’s Triumph over Evil. However, contrary to it’s name, you must never say never . . . . . in Never land.
It’s a well-known fact that in cold weather, reptiles look for the warmest place to sleep and stay close to. Hibernating to conserve their heat. As winter falls as soon as Peter Pan leaves the boarders of Neverland, The crock goes to where he can find the most warmth, and lays quietly falling into a deep and restful sleep.
Hours later, the sleeping crocodiles mouth begins to move, and slowly pry open. A silver hook flashes in what little light there is, hooking around the creatures nose as his jaw is forced down wide open. A tattered, wet, and exhausted Captain crawling out with the quickest of speed. He turns to pull out his foot, which his caught between the beasts two back teeth, using his good hand to jerk at his knee. The captain’s teeth begin to grind, trying to make haste with his escape, knowing that if the animal’s teeth come down, it will be much more then a hand lost.
A determined look on his face he gives one strong final jerk as both his foot and a large tooth pop out of the creature’s mouth. The force of his weight falling back away just in time to hear the large snap of the crocodile’s jaws. Hook scrambled to his feet backing away, but paused as the creature made no move, but that of a snoring sound. Looking about, he wished he had his sword or some other weapon; he’d finish the beast now and never have to worry or fear being swallowed as a meal again. Alas, he would not risk tearing the beast open with just his hook, less it wake up and chew this time.
Crawling across the wet rocks, and out of the cave finding himself in the middle of a snowstorm. He growled low under his breath, as he grit his teeth heading out of the frozen tundra and towards the island. Ice Cycles forming on his mustache and in his long hair that hung about his shoulders. It was a small world, and the island rather unimpressive in itself. It did not take long for him to find the pirates keep on land where they stored supplies that could not be kept on the ship for lack of space. He stopped in front of the door seeing it frozen almost solid with the ice from the rain and snow.
He began to hack at the solid wall of ice with the sharp claw that had come to replace his hand. Cursing and muttering to himself, casting aspersions on the boy whom this world seemed to completely revolve around. Finally being able to pry the entrance to the keep open, he slipped inside letting the door close behind. He found it as cold inside as it was outside, except for the lack of blizzard that did not follow him in. Hook immediately went to work, building a fire in the middle of the keep with supplies they had stored in mass quantities. With the light of the fire he was able to look around for what he wanted, finding a large trunk with his name painted on the front in bold letters.
Taking a key from around his neck, he unlocked the trunk and pulled out a change of clean dry clothes. Stripping of his cold nearly frozen ones and throwing them next to the fire. Still muttering and grumbling under his breath, but now the mutterings were getting louder as he spoke to himself. “A band of grown men, professional pirates beaten by a bunch of children and a mass of fairies. My ship stolen and taken completely out of Neverland.” Throwing his head back and screaming into the air “THERE’S NO SUCH THING AS FIARIES!!!!” Yelling just to spite and kill whatever one fell at the saying of the words.
Turning and looking into a glass at the clothing he’d adorned. Black boots, black pants, of course a white pirate style shirt, and a black vest with gold buttons and decoration. Still, his thoughts were completely wrapped around Pan. “He’s nothing but a child, a CHILD. I had him right where I wanted him, where did I fail.” The thoughts began to turn quicker in his mind, he knew that if he’d found the flaw he could correct it easily. He turned on the heel of his boot and knelt next to the fire, holding his hook before his eyes. “I was so close, he was in my grasp. One slice of my hook and his belly would have been a maggot hole.” His eyes wondered for a moment as his thoughts turned the events over around and around in his mind. Before suddenly it dawned on him, “Wendy. . . . . Wendy’s “thimble”. She gave him the kiss that he heard about in all those stories that she told. What gave him his strength and his power.” His eyes narrowed.
Standing as he paced around the fire, letting his thoughts run over and over again. Before he could hear those same blasted voices ringing in his head, Old, Alone, Done for.” HE closed his eyes and growled covering his ears a moment, not wanting to listen shaking his head refusing to give in. But finally, his eyes opened slowly as he knelt down next to the fire looking into the flames once more, repeating the words that had defeated him and fed him to the crocodile. “Old. . . . .alone. . . . .and done for.” A saddened look filled his eyes at the worlds that seemed to cut through him like the feel of an enemies saber.
But it didn’t take long for the hate, anger, and craftiness of the clever pirate Captain to return. “If I were to find a wife, and bring her back here to Neverland, it might defuse the power that the boy so readily possessed against me.” His mind began to think of the possibilities that this new idea could have. His eyes wondered slowly back to the fire, “I would no longer be alone, and done for. I would have someone of my own, that belonged to no other.” His eyes softening into sadness again, his heart wanting to give up as the words echoed again in his mind. But quickly he began to speak of the advantage it could give him in his war with Pan. “I would have a Wendy of my own and have that very power that has alluded me.”
Standing up suddenly, as he quickly walked over to the door of the keep flinging it open as he opened his lungs and shouted through Neverland “SMEE!!!!” He beckoned, before letting the door slam shut, walking back to the fire. Somewhere on the other side of the island, a pair of eyes opened beneath a snowdrift and looked around. Smee sat up quickly his teeth chattering, ice and snow frozen in his beard and mustache. “Coming Captain!” He said pulling his frozen body from the snowdrift, hurrying off towards the Captains voice.
It was at least an hour later, when Smee finally made his way through the storm. Opening the door of the keep and going inside, so cold his teeth were chattering so hard you’d think they would break. Stiffly walking into the warmth, nearing the fire as his eyes looked around searching for the Captain, finding him packing a bag. “Caa. . .a.. . .a.. . . p. . ptian. . . . .you call. . . . .c. . .c. . .c. . .called.”
Hooks eyes shifted towards his frozen first mate, “I’m going away on a trip Smee, I’ll be gone for quiet some time. I want you to gather the crew, and get our ship back. Or in the event it does not return to Neverland, build a new one.” Smee had moved to sit next to the fire leaning as close into it as possible as the ice and snow started to turn to water and melt off his person.
“Wh . . . .where will. . . . you go Captain?” He inquired thinking it strange that he wanted to leave. “How. . . how is it possible. . . . . I thought we couldn’t leave. . . until Pan was d. . .dead?” He said, the frost and chill still on his voice as his eyes looked inquisitively to his captain.
“There are ways Smee. Leaving is not the hard part, staying away from Neverland and not being pulled back into it ever again is the impossibly of the situation. Until Pan is dead we will never be free.” Closing his pack as he turned to look at his first mate, walking slowly towards him looking at his hook. “In the strange event that on my return, I either find my ship still gone, slovenly conduct among my crew, or even find that a mutiny has been thrust upon my hands . . . .” He moved suddenly towards the freezing man holding his hook to Smee’s throat as he shouted, “I’ll not only slit your throat I will gut you completely and hang you from the highest yard arm of my ship. Understand?”
Smee had fallen back, looking up at Hook with fear, having seen what he could do with his brutally acquired appendage. “N . . . no sir. . .I MEAN. . .yes sir! Of course. . . .” He stuttered not from the cold now but from the fear. Hook nodded before standing again and walking back over to his bag, slinging over his shoulder as he headed towards the door.
Yet, he stopped before proceeding, “Oh, and one more thing.” Turning and looking at his first in command, “See that arrangements are made for my wedding, and my quarters are outfitted for a second occupant.” Smee’s eyes blinked a few times at his words, but before he could inquire as to the order he’d been given, Hook disappeared out into the storm once more.
After making a quick stop by the fairies hollow, he came to the place that would take him to the other world and speed him on his journey. He took out a jar and looked at the fairy that was asleep in it’s hibernation inside. “And you my friend, will be our ticket back here to my ship, and home.” He said flicking the jar and sliding it back into his pack. He’d not fail in his plans this time, he would have his bride and a defense against Pan that the boy could not disarm, no matter how many chants he and his miscreant lost boys shouted at him. He’d have the warmth of another to prove that he was not, “Alone. . . old and Done for. . .”
