My Mother once told me, that in order to find happiness one only had to wake up alive. I always thought that it was rather remarkable, the shit my mother could spew at me at a moments notice. She could have made a fortune with Hallmark. My Mother was dead now; I miss her sappy comments and sweet stories of happily ever after.
‘I’m awake, I must be happy’ I thought to myself with a groan as I sat up in bed and looked around my room. The sun was beginning to rise, the clock playing Beethoven merrily beside me with bright green letters proclaiming the early hour required to get me to school in time. My stepfather threw the door open, a bright and chipper smile on his thin face making me snarl in disgust. I hate mornings, and morning people, and having to go waste my time in classrooms where I already know the material.
He already had breakfast of cereal on the table when I came downstairs dressed in my usual outfits of lace denim and velvet that made most kids steer clear. Couldn’t be seen with someone who wasn’t following the trends now could we?
I let Robert make the small talk he so craved from a normal relationship that he just didn’t get anymore. Smiling halfheartedly as he wished me a good day I waited until he pulled out of the drive before making my way to school.
I walked to school today, in no mood to ride the bus with the rest of the idiots that attended. I sighed heavily, my iPod, a gift from Robert for my recent 17th birthday pounding out “Closer” in my ears. I looked at the school, just visible from over 10 blocks away and sighed as I considered the torture I’d be putting myself through if I went today. It was all review and study sessions for our mid terms that were scheduled next week. I thought a moment more before smirking to myself as the chorus pounded louder screaming in my ear as I turned away and made my way towards the nearby park.
~*~*~
I was swimming in a dark ocean, the waves crashing into me bringing pain and burning to my body each time they crashed over me. I felt my body grow heavier as a bit of light began to brighten the sky. I slowly became aware of whispers, my mind processing that it seemed very strange for the ocean to be talking to me. I struggled some more with the painful waves before the voice cleared up, it was Robert calling my name. I slowly opened my eyes and hissed at the blinding bright light beaming down into my eyes. I winced then as all of the pain I had been feeling increased ten fold. I tried to speak but found my throat parched. Robert smiled tightly at me and held a glass of water up to my lips. “I’m glad you’re awake, you’ve been out for two days.” He looked down at the bed and sighed, “The doctor’s thought you had been attacked by an animal. Do you remember anything?” He asked in a detached tone that made my stomach sink in fright. “N…no I don’t remember anything pass walking towards the park,” I croaked, my throat still pained as if I had strep.
He sighed and looked away from me, something was definitely up.
There was a knock at the door and an older man walked in. I studied him and noted that he might have been handsome if he weren’t so tired and worn out. “Hello Cassie, how are you?”
I nodded, focusing on him and trying to shift into a more comfortable position, it didn’t work. He smiled sympathetically as I whimpered from the flashes of white hot pain that laced through my body from my shifting. “I wanted to talk to you about your injuries. They were quite grave when you were brought in to us. We didn’t think you would survive but you’ve been healing at a remarkable rate. We’ve done some blood tests to see if we could pinpoint the cause for this,” He paused then and glanced away as Robert walked out of the room frowning at my step-father’s reaction. “I’m sorry to say this, Ms. Ray, but you’ve contracted lycanthropy, more specifically the wolf strain.”
I stared at him, my mind trying to wrap itself around the absurd concept he was trying to sell me… I was a werewolf?
~*~*~
I woke up some time later on in the day, I was very careful to keep my breathing even as I tried to see if I was alone or not in the room. The doctor had left not much longer after he realized I wasn’t paying attention to the medical mumbo jumbo he was trying to feed me about my… furry little problem. I shifted ever so slightly which allowed me to turn my head and through my mostly closed lids caught site of Robert sitting stiffly in a chair across the room. Something was most certainly up with him. Despite years of a polite but definitively cold attitude towards him, he never lost his happy expression and zeal for life in general. Now though, he seemed as if he were being forced to endure something revolting to him. His phone chirped and he quickly answered it, his voice a low murmur that wouldn’t have woken me if I was actually still asleep.
“No she’s still asleep…” he said as he glanced over and a scowl crossed his face. He nodded a few times, giving affirmative sounding grunts to whatever was being asked. “That’s wonderful, yes she’s been out for a while, as soon as she goes to sleep I’ll call again and you can come get her. Filthy animal needs to be locked up,” he said with a nasty expression covering his face as he snarled in my direction. It took all of my willpower not to flinch. I stirred instead and heard him quickly end the call and leave the room before I opened my eyes, tears betraying me as they slowly rolled down my face.
I sat up, glad to realize that the pain that had seemed so excruciating to me earlier was little more than a dull ache now and stealthily climbed from bed. I dressed carefully from the yet unpacked bag that Robert had packed for me and slipped it over my shoulder before peaking my head out of the door and checked to see the coast was clear.
I wasn’t sure where I was going, or how I was going to get there, but I had heard of the werewolf clinics, the “safe” houses… There wasn’t a chance in hell I’d go without a fight.
Approx. 4 months later: Somewhere outside of St. Louis
I couldn’t move my body; my limbs ached from the exertion of traveling for so long a distance without food or shelter. It was cold out, chilly in the slowly brightening dawn of a new day. I didn’t know how long I had been out here, searching for a safe haven where I could recover. My leg seized and I let loose a whimper as the pain caused me to stumble back to the ground. I had run away as soon as I realized that Robert wanted to ship me off to some lycanthrope prison, since then I had spent many months running from where I lived, I had no idea where I was anymore, after my first encounter with humans, and almost getting shot, I realized I needed to stay away from civilization entirely.
I slowly stood again, stubbornly ignoring the cramping of my gut and the screaming muscles of my legs. I knew, somewhere in my mind, that I was getting closer to civilization, I stumbled across a road a few hours back and quickly slunk a bit off of it. I was subconsciously following however to see if it would bring me better luck in my search for creature comforts. Ever since the last moon I had been unable to shift back into my human form. I knew I must look a fright if someone was to come across me but I was much too far gone to worry about my appearance. I took another step and let a loud piercing wail as something cold and hard bit into my paw. I collapsed at the pain and snarled around to figure out what had hurt me. Looking down I vaguely recognized the teeth of a bear trap and whimpered as I lay down, defeated in my exhaustion.
I wasn’t sure how long I lay there, my mind becoming more delirious with each pain filled minute that passed. Light began to brighten as the sun showed its face above the horizon. I am alive, therefore I must be happy. I repeated in my head as I did every morning. I lay for a moment longer before I felt myself succumb to the bliss of unconsciousness.
I woke sometime later, startled and fearful though I wasn’t sure why. The sun was directly above me and I felt as if I were on fire, my paw still clamped and bleeding sluggishly. My ears pricked up again as a sound drew my dazed attention. A car. My muscles tightened as I realized this was the first bit of possible human interaction since the farmer with the shotgun over two full moons ago. I watched warily as a jeep began to approach in the distance. I could faintly hear music and whimpered as it began to slow in its approach towards me. I lay very still almost afraid to breathe when it stopped not 50 feet from where I lay. A small man got out of the driver’s seat, his eyes covered in dark sunglasses but I still had the sense he was searching for something. He turned to look in my direction and I shivered as I felt the weight of his stare on me.
He slowly approached and knelt down next to me, wincing as he caught site of my paw still stuck in the mouth of the trap. He reached towards me eliciting another whimper of fright, causing him to slowly shush me. His voice was hypnotic as was the power flowing off of his skin. He told me in gentle tones that he was going to help me and asked if I could shift back to human. I whimpered again, my muscles straining when I tried to shake my head. He gently pet my head and introduced himself to me as he easily pried apart the trap.
“My name is Micah Callahan; I’m the Nimra-raj of the local were-leopard pard.” He said gently as he slowly lifted me in his arms. “I’ll keep you safe and contact the local Ulfric to let him know of your arrival. You’re safe now.” He assured me as he carried me back to the jeep. I whined as I shifted when he laid me in the hatch of the car. “Rest dear, you’ll be alright.” He said as he stroked my head again and closed the door gently.
Cassie stilled, waiting warily for the man to drop the helpful, peaceful façade and turn on her. She felt the car slowly ease back to a higher speed and take off towards the hints of civilization that she had been picking up earlier. Exhausted she lay still and gently licked her paw, whimpering from the excruciating pain the wound caused her.
She attempted to keep alert though the rocking motions of the car were beginning to overcome her tenacious hold on her consciousness and slowly, she felt the darkness take her.
