SUMMARY
It's Carlisle/Edward slash and later on in the story there will be Esme/Bella slash. This is the story of Carlisle and Edward's love for each other. Is it strong enough to last the tests of time? Can it survive through Carlisle's guilt, Edward's anger, and those who will do anything to tear them apart?
AUTHOR'S NOTE (WARNING?)
Okay. I don't really like the idea of posting a story that I don't have at least half way written but this first bit is drifting around in my head and I just can't get rid of it so I'm going to post the first chapter in hopes that it will allow me to get the rest of it finished at some later date. Not sure when that will be (I work full time and am working towards my master's degree and thus free time is not something I have a lot of...)
I am taking quite a few liberties with this story. Mostly Carlisle's past, the ages' of the Cullen clan members, and a personal favorite of mine- SLASH! If it works out the way I have planned... well, it should all work out. (*Fingers crossed*)
PS - I do not a personal beta so please feel free to leave me any constructive criticisms you have.

England’s Rural Countryside
Late Summer, 1668
Despite the late hour it was warm. The sun had set and the moon was high as 28-year-old Carlisle Cullen traveled down a small country road. He knew the path well as it cut through his family’s nearly 1000 acre large estate. Despite the late hour, Carlisle could not sleep. He was to be married the next day.
Carlisle's POV
I know why it is important for me to marry but I cannot help but be honest with myself. I do not wish too. Father already knows that I have no desire to take over the family estate and has named William to be his heir. I was freed from that burden years ago when I made the decision to attend medical school instead of joining her Majesty’s Royal Navy.
Father was always so understanding about it. I knew he was disappointed that I did not follow in his footsteps but “a man needs to pave his own way” is what he would always tell us, William and Matthias and I, and when I went out into the world, that is what he let me do.
So why must I be married? William is going to be the next Lord of Dexton. Matthias entered the clergy just as father wished for him to. And I followed my own dream to study medicine and become a doctor. I know that it is a working profession but it is still an honorable one. Just this evening I was there to help bring a new life into the world. What could be more honorable...
A rustling sound from the trees to my left brought me out of my inner debate.
“What was that?” I said aloud as I stood still, peering into the trees, hoping to catch a glimpse of the animal. Or possibly hoping to miss it, I wasn’t sure.
Next it was from behind me, in another set of trees, that I heard the rustling again. Spinning around, my hands held up high, defensively, waiting for an attack. The silence around grew thick and still around me.
A sharp snap of a branch breaking caused me to jump and before I could help it I took off running.
Be it wolves, or lions, or be it dragons, I had no desire to meet what was lurking in those trees. I must reach home, I must run faster, I must…
My breath was knocked from me as a solid force hit me from behind. I stumbled but did not fall as two cold hands grabbed me. One around my neck, squeezing, cutting off my ability to draw breath. The other in my side, sharp nails cutting through the soft material of my shirt and slicing through the soft skin there.
I was pulled back, my feet leaving the ground from the force of my assailant. The next thing I knew I had landed on my back, looking up at the night time sky. The stars seemed to twinkly twice as brightly. Was that just for me?
I shadow passed in front of my line of sight and the last image I saw was a human like figure. Tall and thin with arms and hands and two glowing red eyes. A burning pain erupted from my neck. Fire, it felt, was coursing through my veins. I was just about to say goodbye to the world and life and family that I loved when the creature stopped. It looked up, past me, and took off running. When it was 100 yards off it turned and looked back at me. It’s red eyes starred and met mine.
And then my world went dark.

Pain. That was all I knew. Pain. Fire. Burning. It seemed endless. In between the bursts of heat I could hear mumblings in the background, but not make out what they were saying. Cool and gentle hands would brush through my hair, and what felt like a cool washcloth was brushed over my forehead. More talking, I wish I knew what they were saying.
Ahh, finally, the release of darkness is here.
And I knew no more.
Carlisle’s Fiancée
It was the middle of the evening when he was brought in. Bruises in the shape of fingers, or claws, where around his neck. His side had horrid gashes in it, where whatever it was grabbed him. And his neck, it looked like it had been pulled apart. Carlisle was thankfully silent, and still, as he was carried into the house and laid down in the kitchen to be treated. The blessed relief of unconsciousness kept most of his pain hidden. He would feel it when he awoke (I refused to think of the possibility that he wouldn’t wake up) but at this moment he was blissfully unaware of his surroundings and state of being. Of all the people in our town to be attacked by a savage beast in the middle of the night, why did our only doctor have to be the victim? There was no one else with any medical training to help him.
The cook helped to clean him up and offered fresh herbs, aloe and dandelion and rose sap, to sooth the wounds. The seamstress arrived soon after with her basket of needles and threads in hopes of closing the injury. After nearly an hour and hundreds of tiny, nearly perfect stitches, had closed the cuts on his side and neck, was Carlisle put into bed. Our marriage bed. We had not yet said our vows to each other, and right now, no one knew if we would ever be able to, but that room was the closest and the biggest.
All was silent until dawn. That is when the screaming started. And the thrashing. And the screaming. No words but harsh groans of pain that traveled throughout the house. No one knew what to do. Carlisle was the town’s only doctor. And he was in need of his own services. A fever raged in him and I busied myself with failing attempts to keep him cool. He seemed to relax, if only slightly, when I ran the washcloth over his face and combed my fingers through his hair. But the relief was only temporary, as soon as I were to stop, the restlessness would begin again.
This went on for three days and three nights. Finally on the evening of the 4th day, Carlisle went still. Most of the house breathed a sigh of relief, thinking he was on the mend. But for me, something didn’t feel right. Wandering into his bedroom, our bedroom, I sat down on the side of the bed with him. His breathing was so shallow, so slow. I picked up one of his hands to hold – and they were so cold. Something was not right. I knew I should have called for help but something inside me told me that it would do no good. Carlisle was leaving us.
I crawled on to the mattress and lay beside my husband for the only time on what was supposed to be our honeymoon. Laying my head down on his chest, listening to his ever fading heart beat. As I lay there, I finally let the tears fell. I cried. For him, for me, for the life that we would never have. And as I cried I heard his heart stop.
My husband was gone.
