The night stars shone bright in the warm Texas evening. A slight breeze ruffled the trees and swayed the grass. The crickets sang it’s oh so sweet melody as the light bugs danced to the tune. He was enthusiast about tonight. A white plantation came just into view as Jasper halted his horse and walked up the dirt path leading to the grand house. At this late hour, he prayed her parents were asleep. He stared into her window wondering if he should continue. “Made it all the way this far, why stop now.” He thought.
Picking up the smallest pebble he could find, He tossed it softly at her window creating a small tap. Waiting a minute, he picked out another small stone and hit the window. Candle light started to shine as the woman of his dream glowed with the light. A look of surprise graced her lovely face. His Katherine…She motioned for him to be silent and wait for her to come down.
“Jasper…Jasper, what are you doing out at this late hour.” A soft feminine voice whispered into his ear. “My pa ain’t gonna like waking up to find you here.” A soft smile lit her innocent face and Jasper felt warmth inside seeing his love smile. He blonde hair was tussled and her cheek’s rosy as the moon light hit her. “I know it’s not proper but I just had to see you before I left.” His thick southern drawl whispered low. Ever the gentleman, the idea of coming here was an action he debated on. It wasn’t proper to see her at this hour. Not to mention without a proper chaperone. If word got out her reputation could be damage.
The young man stood before her fully clad in his gray confederate uniform with a smile on his face. He’d miss her most when he joined the army. She was vastly against it. She just couldn’t understand that it was something he had to do. The pride he felt for his state and the responsibility he felt to protect his family. He wanted…No he needed to make a name for himself. His family wasn’t as rich as Katherine’s. His parent’s farm didn’t grow tobacco like hers or even ranched like hers. There was no way in hell that her father would agree for her to marry him.
“I really wish you wouldn’t leave, Jasper.” She murmured with her bright blue orbs gazing into his eyes, “The war is dangerous, I don’t want to lose you.” Her hand pressed against his chest as her small form shivered. “You won’t lose me.” Encasing her in his arms, he peered around him making sure no one saw. “This is the only way we can be together; your father would never allow me your hand. His hand stroked her hair gently as he kissed her forehead. “I’m leaving tonight, I have to ride ahead and meet with the rest of my company in Earpville.” He released her from his hold and grasped her hand only to place a kiss on it. “I love you, I’ll be back, I promise.”
Before he could take a step off her porch, her arms wrapped around his neck, her lips pressed against his and he just about thought he’d die. Her lips were soft, warm and full of passion. They had never shared a kiss like this before. His mind swirled as he deepen the kiss, unfortunately they had to part for oxygen. “You come back to me you hear, Jasper Whitlock, you come back…” Her voice filled with emotion. “I will, I love you, Miss Katherine.” Were his final words as he walked down the path leading to the gate, with one last look, he mounted his horse and began his ride.

Jasper grimaced holding his colt close to his chest as he looked out onto the flat land. Tonight was his 17th birthday…Well to everyone here, it was his 20th. It didn’t take too long before he saw action once he left Houston. Most of the people in his company were dead with the exception of Robert. They were never really close until them being the sole survivors of their last unit had made them into friends. “Jasper, do you think we’ll meet up with the militia.” Worry and regret were clear in Robert’s eyes. The 5’11 man with black hair and green eyes look broken and exhausted. It had only been a week since they others had died.
They were in union territory and had little to no food but wild berries they had managed to pick up. It was too dangerous to hunt, the sounds of their pistols and rifles going off was sure to be heard. Robert’s head pressed against the side of the ditch tired. “Get some rest Robert, I’ll stand guard.” Jasper suggested still clinging to his colt. He couldn’t shake the feeling that something was going to come from the north. His eyes stayed train on the flat land covered with thick brush. “Alright, but I reckon you should get some sleep sometime tonight too, wake me up in a few hours, you hear.” He stated sternly tucking his arms into himself for some measure of protection from the exposure this land brought them.
Soft snores came from Robert’s form as Jasper trained his ears for any strange noise. Reaching into his pocket, Jasper pulled out a gold watch his father had given him. It had belonged to his father in the Spanish war. ‘Four, maybe I should wake him.’ He thought peering back to the north. ‘But he’d be better if he had more sleep; we’ll be less likely die if he can at least fire his rifle.’ POP POP POP! Loud noises began to come from the north with a man in gray uniform running towards them. One more POP and the man fell hard to the ground as too union officers showed themselves.
One of the men rolled the confederate soldier onto his back with his foot. Pulling his gun from his holster, he sneered down at the man. “You Dixie fuck, how does it feel to be beat down like your little slaves.” A swift kick to the gut cause the man to scream. Right when he opened his mouth a loud bang went off as the man shoot him in the head, sending bits of skull and brain flying. Jasper thought he was going to be sick when he saw the mist of blood. He didn’t need to worry about waking up Robert, the man already had his gun set on the one who just fired the shot.
“We’re gonna die anyway.” Robert gulped with certainty in his eyes. “Let’s go with glory and kill these bastards.” Jasper could tell his friend was afraid and shook his head. “We’re not going to die tonight, they are and we are back with the militia, they’ll hear of how we took them out.” Jasper aimed his colt at one of them. “One three, We’ll run out firing like hell.”
“One…Two…Three.” Jasper and Robert jumped out of the trench and ran towards the men. “For the confederacy,” Robert yelled taking aim and pulling the trigger sending half the Union soldier’s brain to the soil. The man collapsed as Jasper took his shot hitting the other man in the neck, he was on the ground in an instant gurgling blood from his mouth but still very much alive. Robert didn’t waste time slamming the butt of his rifle against the man’s head. He bashed the skull in and didn’t stop until the man was head caved in. “That’s enough,” Jasper growled pulling Robert off. “I’m sure he’s dead now.” Moving to his fellow soldier, he leant down and looked at him with sadness. “We need bury him and leave him.” Robert gritted out. “There is no time, we have to leave now.”
His gaze flickered to the union soldiers. “Let’s take their uniform.” Jasper told Robert. “Why in god’s name would we need those fucking disgraceful uniforms?” He snapped at Jasper. “Because it’s the easiest way to get the hell out of here,” Jasper said with confident. “The militia is just a few miles away, we can reach it before daylight but we’re safer with those uniforms. We’ll switch back before we get to the camp.”
“I hope you’re right, Jasper.” Robert said, already doing as Jasper had told him.
