Chapter 1:
After performing the same routing every five years for the past fifty, the Cullen family really knew how to pack a house. Carlisle rented a trailer for the heavy furniture and the extra cars while Jasper and Emmett took care of packing and wrapping the heavy items and Esme, Alice, and Rose packed the rest. It took only a few hours to reduce the entire house to one room of neat and clearly labeled boxes.
Bella and Edward had not yet returned from their honeymoon on Isle Esme. Carlisle also thought it would be smart to not have Bella in Forks at the time of her own funeral (or Edward for that matter since it was planned that he would “die” along with Bella).
The rest of the Cullen’s were in attendance as their son and brother was laid to rest. The two newlyweds had been on their way to a private island to celebrate their honeymoon when the boat was lost. It was never found and the search was called off a week later.
The plan was for the entire family to move. The painful memories of Forks becoming too much for the family after losing both a son and a new daughter. Relocating to the east coast was just what the family needed to heal from such a tragic and heart wrenching event.
--
In truth, Edward and Bella were having far too much fun on Isle Esme. The private paradise was amazing – both during the day and the night. Edward had made good on his promise and Bella didn’t recall several days of her married life as Edward changed her. The two had discussed her transformation during the flight to South America and the boat trip out to the island. Edward wasn’t a fan of it, not sure of his control, and wanting to limit Bella’s pain as much as he could.
“Do you really want me to bite you while we are making love? Doesn’t is sound too clichéd for you love. You do realize that you’re asking me to…well…make love to you and then kill you, right? I don’t know if I can do that.” he murmured softly, the nervousness evident in his voice.
Bella rolled her eyes and huffed in aggravation, “not kill, Edward, change. Make me like you; keep me with you, always and forever. You’d give me my life, Edward, not take it away. How do you want to change me?” she asked, turning the hypothetical tables on him.
“Well, we would already be in the new house. Carlisle is going to email the details to me. The very northern border of Maine if I remember correctly. It will be very… emotional for me Bella. I do not think I can do it alone. I would rather Carlisle, my father in every way that matters, be there for me.”
“So with your father watching – where?” she inquired, her voice raising slightly as vivid images began to fill her head.
“The basement most likely…” Edward was cut off as Bella held her hand up.
She didn’t want to hear anymore.
Edward sighed in defeat and pressed his lips against hers. “I cannot deny you anything, my life…” he cooed, pressing his forehead against hers. They finally agreed that the two would share some time on the island while she was human and then Edward would change her.
Bella immediately fell in love with Isle Esme. It was lush and colorful and had a full self-sustaining eco-system that the Cullen’s had established to allow for them to feed without having to go to the mainland. Deer and wolves were in abundance along with rabbits, birds, and iguanas.
That first night, Edward and Bella made love. In the ocean, on the shore, and ending in the giant feather bed that occupied the master bedroom of the big house.
A smaller cottage was in the process of being renovated at the far end of the island but it did not escape their attention – or miss the opportunity of a very thorough investigation.
After a week of being human on the island, Bella was anxious to change.
Edward was still cautious of her wish but finally gave in to his wife’s request. They made love; it seemed more passionate, hotter, and more sensual than ever before.
“Edward, I’m so close. Help me, baby. Send me flying. Bring me to life… Ahhhhh! EDWARD!!!” Bella screamed as her orgasm took over her.
Edward bent his head, breathing deep, licking the gentle curve where her neck met her shoulder, his venom making her skin tingle with electrifying sparks before sinking his teeth into her soft and delicious flesh.
He didn’t leave her side for those three days and was right by her when her eyes opened. A gasp left his lips as her lashes lifted… they would have quite a story when they met up with the rest of the family in a week…
--
Now the entire family would be moving to Northern Maine for a few years while Bella learned to control her new abilities and her thirst.
The town of Grand Isle had a population of just fewer than 500 and would be a good starting location. The town was inland and woodsy and cloudy for most of the year. It was perfect.
Esme arrived first to make sure the designers she hired had followed her directions exactly.
Carlisle was the next one to make it home, unable to stay away from his wife for too long.
Alice and Jasper came in just a few hours after and were followed by Emmett and Rosalie the next day (as they had taken the time for a few pit stops along the way).
Edward and Bella didn’t arrive until a few days later. The house was unpacked and the newest couple had a large room and private bathroom on the same floor as the rest of their siblings.
Alice was jumping up and down in the driveway – anxious to greet her brother and sister. She had kept her knowledge to herself, giddy about the news ever since the morning Bella had woken up.
The entire family was there as Edward and Bella pulled up into the driveway in Bella’s new car, a Ferrari F430 in a candy apple red color. Edward opened his door before racing around to open Bella’s. He offered her hand and she took it before stepping out and facing her family.
At the same time five surprised gasps were heard along with a high pitched squeal as Alice threw her arms around Bella – welcoming her new sister home. They most definitely had story to tell…

Just a few more miles. Keep running. Keep running.
This was the recurring inner monologue of Howard Epps. He had broken out of the Washington D.C. Federal Maximum Security Prison just a short 34 hours ago.
It felt like forever and a day.
Freedom at last.
Grand Isle was several hundred miles from Washington D.C. There was no way Booth, his name spit out with anger and malice, would look for him here.
Epps could start over. Find new girls. Start new games.
A maniacal grin spread across his face. It was only chance and luck that had introduced Epps to Grand Isle, Maine. With only 500 people and barely a stone’s throw from the Canadian border it was a great town for his escaped con to start over again.
It was perfect.
--
It was a cloudy day, but still hot and humid, as a young couple pulled into Grand Isle.
The young couple were on their way north and stopped for lunch and gas in the tiny town before crossing the border. A large clearing surrounded by thick trees drew the couple in, inviting them to have a picnic lunch and a lazy afternoon before finishing their drive.
A blanket was laid out and food enjoyed before an impromptu game of Frisbee started. A wild throw slipped through the woman's fingers and off into the bushes. Laughing she turned to chase after it while the man looked after her as she disappeared…
Suddenly a piercing scream ripped through the silent forest. The young man took after her with great speed, needing to find her, make sure she was safe. He found her looking down over a rotted log. He came up behind her and looked too, for just a brief moment, before turning and vomiting, unable to hold his lunch in.
On the other side of the log was a body – naked and decomposed – of a young girl.
--
Epps watched as the volunteer police of this tiny town tried to follow the leads to find him. Jenny Smith, the name of the young girl, was the very first murder victim in the town’s history – which had been founded just four short years after the conclusion of the Civil War.
The young girl had been a high school senior and accepted to an IVY League college – Brown if he remembered correctly. He laughed as he thought of the mementos had placed on her.
They don’t lead to me, he thought to himself from his hiding place of an abandoned cabin.
Oh no. They led to Jackie Carter. Eighteen years old, captain of the cheerleading team, set to marry the starting quarterback in a few short months. Princess of the town, apple of her parents eyes, and smelled so sweet with her flowered shampoo. I can’t wait to feel her soft flesh give beneath my hands and hear her frantic screams fill the night sky.
There was supposed to be a campfire rally that evening to prepare for a big game. That is when Epps planned to make his move. He got there early and set up in the tall grasses that surrounding the fire pit. It was just a few hours before sunset when the kids showed up in their trucks and jeeps and four-wheelers. A keg was unloaded from the bed of one truck and a grill from another. The party started and all Epps had to do was sit and watch and wait.
And he waited.
Finally the perfect moment came.
Jackie Carter had to use the bathroom and took a flashlight before wandering off into the grass alone. Epps snuck up behind her, slowly and silently creeping his way through the grass. Jackie had her back to him, completely unaware of the danger.
Suddenly a hand wrapped around her mouth, holding so tightly her frantic screams couldn’t make it around his closed fingers.
Nearly an hour had gone by before the others started to notice.
“Where’s Jackie?"
"Has someone seen Jackie?"
"Her car is still here but I haven’t seen her in a while."
"We need to find Jackie…”
But it wouldn’t have mattered.
The sun was just rising about the horizon casting pink streaks through the sky as Howard Epps finished placing his last marker on the bruised, naked, and mutilated body of young Jackie Carter. She was bound and gagged and tossed in the grasses on the far side of a stream embankment. The seemingly casual display of her body was in fact meticulously planned out. She would be found soon and once again all Howard Epps had to do was sit and watch and wait.
--
Carlisle looked up from his desk as a second gurney was wheeled into the tiny hospital. A sheet was pulled up over the victims head. Quickly bowing his head, Carlisle crossed himself, giving a silent prayer to the newest casualty.
“Afternoon, Chief. What do we have here?”
The police chief, Brian Michaels, shook his head. “Jackie Carter – student at the high school. Sweet young girl – such a shame to lose her. Set to marry Bobby Williams in just a few months. Think it’s related to the other girl we brought in last week. We tried to follow those clues that were attached to her but instead of taking us to the killer, they took us to her,” he tilted his head in the direction of the body.
Carlisle nodded, “okay, well, let’s see what we have.”
He lifted the sheet back from the victims face.
“Young Caucasian female. Jaw alignment and physical development puts her around late teens. Bi-lateral ridge on her nose, she broke it when she was very young, five or six perhaps. Did she come with objects on her as well?”
A volunteer officer that came in, nodded, “yes, doctor. We left them on the body after taking notes and photos. We weren’t going to chase these down, hoping that if we don’t go looking for the killer he might not strike again. Wait for us to go after him first.”
Carlisle nodded and stood to wheel the body into the freezer.
Chief Michael’s hand on his arm stopped him. “I’m sorry to have to say this to you, Doctor, but I cannot let it slide by. Some of the residents are, nervous, about these murders occurring so soon after your family moved here. There has never been a murder in Grand Isle, and now we have two dead girls in a two week span.”
Carlisle’s eyes widened. “Sir, are you saying that my family and I are… suspects. Just because we are private people does not mean that we are murderers. I assure you, none of us have had any hand in this?”
“I’m sure you didn’t Carlisle, and no, I’m not saying that you’re suspects. I’m just advising you of what the town’s people are saying. But, at the same time, I wouldn’t leave town if I were either. Good day, Doctor.”
The officers left and after Carlisle finished securing the second victim he sat at his desk with his head in his hands.
Edward. He thought, knowing his son would hear him from his class room at the small town school. We need to have a family meeting today, some big changes are happening and we need to be extra careful. I’m worried about Bella and Jasper, please keep an eyes on them and let Alice know to look out too. I’ll tell you what is happening when I get home tonight.
Knowing his son would pass the message on, Carlisle returned to work. This case was getting bigger than he could handle on his own. After some research on the computer, Carlisle picked up his cell phone and dialed.
"Jeffersonian Institute, Medi-Legal department, how may I direct your call?" came a polite voice from the receiver.
“Yes, this is Dr. Carlisle Cullen from Grand Isle, Maine. May I speak to Dr. Temperance Brennan please?”
"I’ll see if she is available. Hold please."
“I don’t mind holding, thank you.”
Carlisle waited for a few moments.
"Hello. This is Dr. Brennan."
“Hello, Dr. Brennan. My name is Carlisle Cullen; I’m the doctor for a small town in Maine. We’ve recently had some murders in our town that are similar to a case you worked last year in DC. I was hoping that if you were available, you wouldn’t mind assisting us with this case. Grand Isle is a small town and we are not capable of handling a case such as this on our own.”
"Could you describe the case, Doctor. How would it be familiar to me?"
“It is still early but it appears to be following the Howard Epps case that you worked last year. Clues left on the victim’s bodies but instead of leading to a killer, they led to another victim. I am aware that Mr. Epps is still in the custody of the Washington Penitentiary and am hoping that you can help us identify this copy cat. Maybe recognize a mistake or clue we missed. ”
A gasp could be heard on the other end followed by a man’s voice in the background.
"What is it Bones? What’s going on?"
Dr. Brennan quickly gained her composure again.
"I’d be happy to help, Dr. Cullen. Since you have ruled this as a homicide case it will fall under the jurisdiction of the FBI. My partner, Special Agent Booth, and I will be up to see you shortly. I’ll get in touch with you to confirm meeting arrangements."
Carlisle gave Dr. Brennan all the needed information before hanging up. He felt relieved. Real police officers and a full medical team were on the way. They might be able to catch this killer and save another young life.

End of Chapter 1
Please Review… Reviews feed the soul (and the muse).
Just your basic introductory chapter. Nothing all that exciting right now but it will pick up more. The description of Bella and Edward's honeymoon (from the layout of Isle Esme to the method of change) is all courtesy of LolaShoes and her amazing stories Let Your Light Shine and A Life Extraordinary. For anyone who hasn't read her works, you should check them out. They are AMAZING!!
Also, for your useless trivia of the day, Grand Isle, Maine is a real town. In 2008 the town had a population of 490. Grand Isle was founded in 1869 and is located on the US/Canada border. I was not able to locate any news story of reference to a single murder ever taking place in the town. While most of the town's description is made up, the location, size, and crime history is factual.
