“What do you mean, married?”
Leah closed her eyes and took a deep breath through her nose before letting it out slowly. She had known this would happen. She had told him.
“Exactly what we just said. We got married.”
Emily blinked at her. Sam frowned.
She sighed. She had known this would happen.
--------------------
3 weeks earlier:
She was counting her heartbeats, the pounding in her ears keeping her distracted. Faster. She put on another burst of speed trying desperately to outrun the memories, his voice in her head. Her own broken heart.
The others didn’t understand. Could never understand. She saw in his eyes what he was so good at hiding from everyone else. She knew the truth. What even he hadn’t yet acknowledged.
She ran faster.
--------------------
When she emerged from the forest, fully clothed, yet without her shoes (she had given up wearing them entirely), she was near the beach. Not one she recognized, but she wasn’t surprised. She had passed La Push’s boundaries hours ago.
It was quiet, deserted. Of course, this was winter in Washington. No one came to the beach this time of year.
Except her.
She walked down to the water line, the sand tickling her feet slightly with each step. It was peaceful, something Leah hadn’t felt for too long. She closed her eyes and breathed in the salty briny taste of the sea.
Along with something else. A twig snapped behind her.
She spun, crouching, teeth bared, ready to phase, to attack.
And then gravity melted away.
--------------------
Seth was going crazy.
Leah had stormed off a week earlier after Sam and Emily had announced their engagement. She had returned the next day with a pensive look on her face. She had shrugged when Jacob had demanded to know where she had gone. “Out,” was the only answer she would give.
Over the next week, she had continued to disappear for hours at a time, always returning alone, aloof and with no further explanation as to where she had gone.
But she had never been gone this long. The packs had been looking for 3 days in the forest. Jacob had even recruited the Cullens for help, but they had lost her scent at a beach miles away. The others were ready to call in Sheriff Swan, but Jacob had asked for more time.
So now he was stuck sitting on Jacobs porch, waiting for news of his sister. Jacob was at the Cullens with Nessie and he could hear some of the others inside complaining about how they were better off without her making their lives miserable. That they should stop looking.
Seth clenched his fists in anger. Leah was his sister. They hadn’t been there to see what Leah had gone through after Sam had imprinted on Emily. The confusion, the anger, the depression. Leah had loved Sam, with all of her sixteen year old heart. Seth had never been in love, not really, but he knew you didn’t just let go as if it had never happened.
Seth was loyal to Sam before Jacob had formed his own pack, because Sam had been pack leader. But he could never really forgive him for hurting Leah like that. Sam was older. He should have known better.
While distracted with these thoughts, he didn’t notice the sleek black car coming up down the drive until it was nearly in front of him. When he looked up, a man and Leah were getting out the car. He stood, opened his mouth to call out and then stopped. Why would Leah be driving home, when she could just run? And who was the man with her?
--------------------
When Seth walked into the house and announced that Leah was back, and had brought a friend, Sam hadn’t been expecting this. The friend, and he used the term loosely (friends didn’t look at each other like that), stood the same height as Sam, a little leaner, but Sam still got the impression this guy could hold his own in a fight. Blonde hair had bleached by the sun, Sam couldn’t tell what color the eyes were, but he got the impression they weren’t blue. It wasn’t until he had started down the porch steps that the scent hit him. He stopped abruptly and his eyes went wide. He look from the man in front of him to Leah and back again. No, he thought. She couldn’t have.
He heard Emily come to the door, knew she was looking curiously out at them all. He resisted the urge to run back to the door, push Emily inside and lock her in. That would be undignified.
He realized no one had spoken since coming outside and the silence was becoming awkward. Not that the blonde standing on Jacobs lawn looked anything near approaching awkward. One eyebrow cocked indolently, he lounged - there really was no other word for it - against the hood of the car, one hand on Leah’s back, possessively?, silent encouragement?, and a slight smirk on his too handsome telling Sam he knew exactly what Sam’s problem with him was. Sam hated him on sight.
“Leah, what’s going on?”
--------------------
Leah looked at the man who stood beside her, staring at Sam. She couldn’t tell what he was thinking. She looked back at Sam, opened her mouth to tell him…but before she could get a word out the idiot standing next to her spoke first. “We got married.”
She shut her mouth with a snap, whipped her head around to look at him so fast she was pretty sure she had whiplash and glared daggers.
It didn’t work.
Instead, he winked at her.
The nerve.
Then she heard Emily come out to the porch, and turned back around. She had made her decision. She would face the consequences.
Emily was staring at he. Well, to be fair, everyone was staring at her. Most looked shocked. Embry’s mouth was actually hanging open a little. Seth looked hurt.
She felt a pang for her brother. She should have told him first. She shook her head mentally, too late for that. She squared her shoulders and looked again at Emily.
Emily was now looking at her with…was that…pity? “Leah,” her cousin, her family, someone Leah never thought of as selfish, even after she had returned Sam’s feelings, “I know you’re angry that Sam and I got engaged, but you didn’t have to do something like this. Not for some sort of...of...revenge.”
It was Leah’s turn to blink. She stared at Emily with something akin to shock. She thinks I did this because of her? Because of them?
Leah barked out an incredulous laugh. She couldn’t believe it. “Yeah, Emily. Everything’s about you.” She rolled her eyes. “I went out and got hitched to the first guy that would have me to get back at you. My dastardly plan has been uncovered, woe is me.”
She was rather proud of the dry tone her voice had adopted. She wondered if she could do it again.
Then Seth spoke. “She imprinted, Emily. Of course she got married to him.” And the way he said it, like he believed in her, had every confidence that this was how it was supposed to be, very nearly broke her heart for love of her brother.
Seth looked at her and nodded solemnly. He understood. He’s growing up, thought Leah, with a little sadness. When did that happen?
--------------------
Seth walked forward to stand in front of the newest addition to his family.
“Is this the part where you tell me that if I hurt her you’ll kill me?” the blonde asked.
Seth was quiet a moment, then grinned. “Oh, no,” he said cheerfully. “If you hurt her she’s more than capable of killing you herself. Possibly with a variety of weapons.”
His new brother-in-law looked extraordinarily, and, in Seth’s opinion, disturbingly pleased by the idea, and looked sidelong at Leah. “Yeah?” he drawled.
--------------------
Leah rolled her eyes at her new husband’s antics. Husband, she thought fondly. I like the sound of that.
Seth clapped him on the shoulder. “You should meet the others.” This seemed to be the icebreaker for everyone else, as they all immediately converged on them, pulling her husband into the house, all talking at once, wanting to know all about him, how he had met Leah, how he had courted Leah. Emily followed after, yelling about not touching the muffins, that they were still too hot. She looked behind her once, met Leah’s eyes. Emily hesitated, unsure. Leah nodded, and Emily went inside. She was left alone.
Well, except for Sam. He stood on the porch steps, staring out at nothing. She caught his gaze and he drifted closer, still staring, looking a little lost.
She knew what was coming.
--------------------
Sam couldn’t believe it. Leah had always been his, even when he hadn’t wanted her. This thought shocked enough to meet her eyes, guiltily. She was looking at him all too knowingly. He felt his face go warm with shame, but he tried to hide it.
“Well,” he said. “I suppose congratulations are in order.” He tried to smile, but even he knew it was strained.
She was still looking at him, her eyes damning him with the knowledge that she knew, had always known.
“Figured it out, did you?” she asked. “Only took you nearly 2 years. I suppose it’s for the best. We can’t have our fearless leader being totally ignorant.”
She was mocking him.
His lips tightened into a thin line and he started to speak. She cut him off.
“You’re a coward.” She nearly spat the word.
He stumbled away from her in shock.
“Did you really think I would always be there, Sam? Your backup plan? You probably thought you were clever, too. ‘Gee, if Emily ever comes to her senses and leaves me, at least I’ll always have Leah to run back to.’”
She was glaring at him fiercely, the setting sun silhouetting her back making her look like an avenging angel or a Valkyrie. All she needed was a sword.
But her tongue had cut just fine. He could feel her words sinking into him, biting deep, knew he would never escape this pain, this guilt.
She walked towards him slowly, her eyes never leaving his, until she was in front of him again.
“Did you really think I wouldn’t know?”
And then she was gone. Brushing past him, walking up the steps and into the house.
And out of his life, leaving Sam alone, with the knowledge that she would never be his again.
--------------------
Leah strode into the house with her head held high. She felt victorious. She had won. She looked to where her husband was sitting in the living room with Seth and Embry on either side of him on the couch. Billy Black was being introduced and Leah could hear Emily in the kitchen berating someone on eating all the muffins.
She smiled. This was her family.
She strolled over to the group, still smiling, greeting Billy, and knowing that she was finally happy.
And she was finally free.
