Bella let go of Edwards hand violently. She looked at him in disgust as he turned to look at her. She saw the bloodlust still flaming in his eyes as he looked at her with surprise, wondering why she suddenly smelled of fear. Why she had suddenly let go of his hand in front of the royalty of the vampires. The head of the group looked at Bella curiously and turned to Edward asking “Is there something that is bothering your soon to be mate Edward? It would seem she is a bit frightened.”
He smiled in a grin full of fangs that dripped with saliva at the thought of human blood. Edward turned to Bella and started to walked towards her as she backed away with each step that he took. He was dumbfounded as to why Bella would be frightened of him, at least enough to back away from him as he moved towards her, to try and comfort her. Edward asked “Bella, what’s wrong? Why are you backing away?”
Bella turned her back to him and started to run, knowing that it was futile because he could capture her within a millisecond. Alice turned towards Bella and was overcome by a version of her coven brother standing over her dear friend covered in her blood, both of them completely devoid of clothing, and Bella grasping her neck as her heart contuined to beat slower and slower, until finally it stopped altogether. Alice gasped at this version and quickly grabbed her brother’s arm. He turned to her quickly and Alice shook her head. “Let her go Edward. Give her some time alone. She needs it.” Edward looked back to the path that Bella had taken through the woods, still being able to hear her foot steps over the brush of the forest ground.
Bella ran and ran until her lungs could no longer carry her the length of ground that she needed to run. She knew that she was close to the reservation though but not close enough to the Blacks house yet. That was a good thing for her, because she had quite a few things to process. She had just run away from her boyfriend, or lover or whatever he was, because she had finally seen through the illusion of his predatory skills and had actually started to fear him. Or the fear had already been there, hidden deep inside by the passionate illusion his body created on her, she just couldn’t sense it until now.
Until she had seen one of the same monsters almost crush the life out of her Jacob. Wait a second, her Jacob, what was her mind thinking. She had belonged to Edward for the longest time, could it actually be that her feelings for Jacob, could be more than what they actually had been for the longest time. Could it be that she actually felt more for Jacob and it had just been hidden underneath the passionate illusion of Edward like her fear of him. Like her confusion as to why he had gone away then come back for her.
She felt so confused, heartbroken and relieved all at the same time. She was heartbroken about what had happened to Jacob, she was very worried about him, to the point that she felt like she was going to break down and cry any second. She was confused because she was trying to break through the illusion that had been her life for the last year, and trying to put it all back together but sort through.
She was relieved that she had finally escaped the clutchs of Edward even though she had felt no danger but she had known every second had been dangerous, to her life and to all those she loved. How could she have done such a thing and willingly if not almost willingly spent time with such a creature that could kill her in a split second and would enjoy it. No matter which way she looked at it, she had been in danger, and now the love of her life had been hurt trying to protect her. Wait love of her life. Bella felt as though she was being pulled.
Pulled in the direction of the reservation and straight to the Black House, because she felt an overwhelming need to make sure that her Jacob, her Jake, her wolf in every sense of the word hers, was alright. She started to run again, feeling the adrenaline rushing through her veins as she found a renewed source of energy, and her heart started screaming at her, run as fast as you can to that wolf, tell him how stupid he is and tell him how much you love him. Go!! GO!!!!! It kept screaming at her as she weaved her way through the trees, knowing and not knowing which way to go towards the house where her wolf lay in pain, waiting for her.
Waiting for her to arrive, waiting to know that she was truly alright, and waiting to hear her answer to the kiss they had shared in her kitchen more than six months before hand. She could tell just by sense that she was drawing close to the Black house but then she knew she was in the right place because she could hear the screams resonating from inside the shack looking place.
She winced as she heard a blood curdling scream and instantly tears sprang to her eyes. She needed to get to him and now. She crested the hill just as Carlisle walked out of the house and spotted her. His eyes softened towards her but all she did was look away in fear and disgust. Just as Carlisle was explaining the extent of Jacobs injuries to Billy, Bella walked up to him and kneeled down in front of the man that was like a father to her. His hands were wrapped tightly around the handles of his wheelchair as Carlisle finished his explanation.
Billy’s eyes were misty and Bella could tell it must have been a trial hearing his sons screams of pain the entire time. How heart wrenching it must had been, when she had only heard one and it had been enough to break her heart to a million pieces. Carlisle looked one last time at Bella as he turned to leave, and Billy looked down at the young woman in front of him.
Billy placed his hand on her shoulder and said “Go in that house right now and let him know that you are alright. He has been more worried about you than about himself. He was screaming for you Bella. You better not leave.” Billy tightened his hand on her shoulder in half reassurance half commanding gesture. Bella looked at Sam , and the alpha male held out his hand to help her up. He jerked his head towards the house and Quil, Embry and Leah all backed away. They all knew that the only one who could offer Jacob comfort and strength right now was the vamp chick, and they would just have to deal with that fact and check on their pack mate later on.
Bella took Sam’s hand and stood up quickly, almost running the few short steps to the front door of the house. She made her way through the house like she had lived there all her life and she practically had for that spring and summer after Edward had disappeared and left her empty, but she had really never been empty, it was just a trick that the illusion had play on her.
Bella stopped a few feet outside of Jacobs open bedroom door and swallowed. She could hear the shallow wheezy breathing of the man inside the room. She poked her head in the room quickly and almost dropped to the floor at the site before her eyes. She could tell the Jacob wore nothing but the sheet over his hips. The stark white of the bandages was in deep contrast against his sun darkened skin the color of bronze. There was red already seeping through the bandages, telling her that his healing gift was not working as it should, with him in such a weakened state.
Bandages covered his entire right side, his arm hugged close to his chest and held in place by a splint on his upper and lower arm. Bandages appeared from his collarbone all the way to an inch above his bellybutton. Even lying unconscious as he was, Bella still thought he was sexy and irrestible, even covered in bandages. The white cloth also covered his leg in a splint from thigh to foot, which was uncovered and resting on a few pillows. Bella put her hands to her mouth to try and hold back the sounds of her tears as not to disturb Jacob, but that was already too late, he had known she had been there from the moment she had crest the hill of the property.
Jacob opened his eyes slowly, just to make sure that what he smelt and heard were not an illusion. That he could smell the light cherry blossom and spring scent that Bella carried, that always made him feel drunk and heady with her around. That he could hear her quieted crying for him. He saw and knew that Bella was safe and sound, just by looking at her. Even though he had morphine running through his system, he wanted to make sure that the medicine was not causing him to halluicanate. He opened his mouth just enough to let her name run over his lips. “Bella”
Bella gasped and turned quickly, not knowing what to do as she saw the most beautiful chocolate brown eyes looking straight at her clearly and with intent. Bella flew to the side of Jacobs bed and didn’t know what to do. His entire right side was damaged and battered to a million pieces. His head was close to the edge of the bed and there Bella found her solace in knowing that he was ok.
She buried her face in the excess of pillow under his head and nudged his head with hers lightly. It was the only thing she could do and be able to be near him without causing him more unnessecary pain. He lifted his left hand and reached across his body slowly, testing the movement until her reached her cheek. He lifted her cheek so that she could look at him, his eyes questioning her presence in his bedroom.
“What are you doing here Bells? Where’s that so called vamp of yours?” Jacob asked as he laughed lightly and then winced, regretting the motion as his ribs were still cracked. Bella gave him a small smile and looked at him with pleading eyes, trying to say everything that was on her mind at once to him. She knew though, that the things she needed to tell him could wait, her confession could wait because he needed to rest and she would be there the entire time with him. Bella put her hand over his and turned her head into his palm, nuzzling closer. She kissed the palm of his hand and closed her eyes, just feeling safe knowing that he was going to relatively ok for now. She was just thankful that he as alive.
Jacob was surprised by the action of Bella kissing his hand, and it sent electric shocks up his arm and down his back. Just a simple kiss from her on his skin could cause his body to turn to flame, even though he was as hurt as he was. He felt blood start to rush to the center of his body, causing his cock to become semi hard. Even in this state, his wolf demanded claim on Bella, that he pick her up and settle her over his straining erection, claiming her as his, even thought it would cause more damage to him. He hoped she wouldn’t notice the tent starting in the middle of the sheet over his body, but unknown to him she did notice. She turned towards the dresser on the end of his bed to reach over and grab the cloth to bath his head when she had noticed the action that his body was taking.
Bella blushed slightly as she leaned back and wiped the sweat from Jacob’s brow, hoping that in the darkness he wouldn’t noticed the slight pink twinge to her cheeks. Jacob closed his eyes as he felt the damp coolness of the cloth touched his forehead and wipe the remnants of pain from his brow. He felt relieved at knowing that Bella was more than alright, but he felt stronger with her around, like the pain didn’t matter but then again he always felt like that with her around.
He always felt like her could take on the world, at any point in time, anywhere, as long as she was there. He pulled her hand away from his brow and looked at her with a seriousness that she had never seen run across his face. He put his hand behind her head and slide his fingers into her hair. He massaged her scalp as he said “You’ve gotta know by now Bells, how much you really mean to me, how much I love you. How much I’m right for you Isabella Swam.”
Jacob pulled her with all the strength he could muster, even though her was hurt and pulled her to him, ignoring the screaming pain in his ribs as she landed against him. He turned his head a little to the side and kissed Bella with as much love and passion as he could. Bella was surprised by this action, like she had been before, but this time she didn’t force him away, this time she didn’t pull back. What she did next surprised even him, and surprised her even more not knowing where the action had come from. She kissed him back, with all the love and fear of loss that she had felt when the vampire had hurt him. She kissed him with all the pent up passion and fear she had felt that would come into play.
Jacob pulled back and looked into Bella’s passion filled eyes, hoping that she finally understood. Hoping that the next time he kissed her she would feel the same thing she had felt at that moment, that she would understood where she truly belonged, and with who she belonged. It had taken just enough but the pain finally got the better of him and he winced as all that was pent up crashed over him.
He pushed Bella away and gasped, as wave after wave crested over his entire body, his healing gift trying to repair some of the damage, little by little, but quicker nonetheless. Bella grabbed his good hand and held onto it as he gasped for breath, trying not to scream, as his wolf inside was howling and whimpering in pain. He held onto her hand tight enough for it to hurt but she didn’t care, just as long as maybe she could take some of his pain.
“What can I do? Jake tell me what to do please.” Bella cried to him, as he arched his back just a little and enough to cause even more pain. He just continued to hold her hand tightly and pulled her close. He leaned his head into her left shoulder and groaned as the pain finally started to subside. He regretted the pain that he had caused to his body but he would never in his life regret that kiss. The first kiss that Bella had ever responded to was one that would stay burned into his memory for the rest of his life and beyond. He lightly kissed her shoulder through her shirt and nuzzled his nose into the crook of her neck, her scent calming him and making him feel more relaxed. Bella stood to get up and leave but Jacob held her hand and pulled her back down.
“Don’t you dare leave, not this time, not ever Bells. You belong here and you know it.” Jacob struggled to say through the pain in his right side, he looked at her as she took the cloth and wiped his brow again, hoping it would help a little bit. “I’m exactly right for you Bella. We both know that you love me and that I love you. Even if it’s barely enough, I want to try.” Jacob pulled Bella back down to kneel next to him again and slide his good hand into her hair again. Bella’s eyes misted as the confusion was still rising within her. She felt right near Jacob, she felt whole, protected, perfectly safe and sound, and above all, utterly and completely loved, no matter what mistake she made.
When she had gone back to Edward after he had left, Jacob was still around, not as much as she would have liked but he stayed to protect her. He had fought with the Cullen coven and had gotten hurt, it had all been to protect her, all to make sure she would stay safe. He was willing to give his life for her. Even after he had found out about Edward asking her to marry him and her acceptance he had started to run off but he had stayed.
That kiss they had shared on the mountain had proven that she loved him. She had loved him all along she just wasn’t willing to admit it, not only because of fear of the vampire freak boyfriend of hers, but because she had never experienced something so perfect in her life. They fit together perfectly no matter what situation, they fit and they needed to stay that way. Bella fought with all her strength to finally find the truth and she finally did.
Her mind flashed her back to the days spent as a little girl on the cold sandy beaches of La Push, running with the res boys up and down, chasing them for teasing her. She had one time fallen over a protruding stick in the sand and crashed landed face first in the sand. She had pulled herself up straight when her eyes had misted and started to cry as the res boys just laughed. Little Jacob Black didn’t think it was funny though. He walked over to little Bella Swan and picked her up, dusted off her pretty blue dress and then turned to the res boys. She couldn’t really remember what he said but she remembered what she had said in front of everyone. “I’m gonna marry Jacob when I grow up.”
Her memory served her well because that day on the beach, even though she was little and she was young, barely even a kid yet, she had given her whole heart to Jacob Black and now he returned that favor by wanting to give her his. She had never really realized it because she was always too near to Edward and the other Cullens to even feel anything but the dangerous illusion of attraction to them all. Jacob pulled her close to him so that his forehead touched hers and he sighed in contentment before he released his hand from the back of her head and put it back to his side.
Jacob looked at Bella as she pulled away from him a little and smiled as much as he could through the pain he felt again in his right side. Bella touched his right shoulder lightly as not to cause him any more undue pain and smiled back at her even as she tried to fight the tears from falling.
