“Yes, Watson, I do indeed know who Jack the Ripper is,” said Sherlock Holmes. “Truly, Holmes? Would you care to share your deduction?” “My dear Watson, you’ve seen all the facts as I have, and yet…” Holmes sighed in resignation. “Very well, I shall explain.” Holmes stared out the window of 221B Baker street, before turning to face Doctor Watson. “The killer is none other than Jacob Levy.” “But Holmes, do you know what this means!” “I do indeed, Watson. If this became public then the current anti-Semitic feelings and many near riots would erupt into bloody violence city-wide, as the killer is indeed Jewish.” “But what is the evidence that he is the killer?” asked Watson. “I will adduce evidence that will lead you inevitably to the same conclusion, Watson. Firstly, we can both agree that the killer is insane. Jacob Levy, Watson, suffers from advanced syphilis, and as you know, one of the possible symptoms of that is insanity. He is also a butcher by trade.” “But Holmes, haven’t the authorities dismissed that notion?” “Indeed; but they are, of course, wrong. Think about it, Watson. What is the one thing all the murders have in common, apart from the violence and the profession of the victims?” Watson thought for a moment, before Holmes interrupted his thoughts. “Darkness, Watson, Darkness! All victims – save, perhaps, the last – were killed in either total or near-total darkness. I agree that the killer couldn’t have been a doctor or surgeon – the mutilations weren’t skilled enough and were too quickly performed. But a butcher or slaughterman, on the other hand, is skilled enough to know where the internal organs are, and is equally skilled enough to remove them from the carcass, and to do it quickly. Indeed, a skilled butcher can do it by feel alone.” “But what about the missing organs?” “Jews can eat offal, but only if they are prepared in an exacting way,” said Holmes. “Kosher,” piped in Watson. “Exactly. Jacob Levy’s business is failing, and my own enquiries in this matter suggest that his fellow Jews have been shunning him in increasing numbers. The reasons are, I believe, two-fold. One reason is for his criminal record – he was jailed for theft from a fellow butcher – and also, more importantly, because of his increasingly erratic behaviour. “I see, Holmes,” said Watson. “His diseased mind has caused him to be angry at his fellow Jews, and to seek revenge. Therefore, the organs he has harvested from the corpses have been sold from his business to other Jews. Most assuredly not Kosher, Watson.” “Oh my word… Holmes, you don’t seriously mean…” “I do indeed, Watson. Hence the mysterious message written in chalk on that wall; he wants the public to believe that the killer is indeed Jewish. A pogrom – even a small-scale one – would please him immensely. And that brings us to the prostitutes, Watson.” “They’re a ready source of… supplies,” said Watson, proud of his assumption. “No, Watson. Think, man! What is the most common way to become inflicted with syphilis?” “Prostitutes.” “Exactly. Revenge, Watson. But not just for himself. Jacob Levy has a wife and children, if you remember.” “Of course! And a husband with syphilis will commonly pass it onto his wife.” “And what’s more, even if the wife has no symptoms, if she becomes pregnant then she will commonly pass it onto the newborn.” “Congenital syphilis,” said Watson. “Just so. Do you remember, Watson, what mutilations the killer inflicted on Catherine Eddowes, in particular the face?” “He… cut off her nose, and performed other mutilations on the eyes and cheeks.” “Just as you say. And what are the possible symptoms of congenital syphilis?” Watson thought for a moment. “Holmes! The nose can sometimes look as if it has been… cut off.” “Exactly, Watson. The other facial mutilations are also in keeping with that theory.” “So one of his children has syphilis!” “Add that to the fact that he is slowly dying from syphilis – a disease he, without doubt, caught from his local Whitechapel prostitutes – and you have the perfect recipe for revenge.” “So you’ll be providing your evidence to Inspector Abberline then.” “Indeed I will not, Watson.” “But… Holmes! Surely you can’t just let a vicious, insane killer go free, not when you know of his identity! Think of the lives…” “Calm yourself, Watson. I have no intention of letting the killer go free.” “But… you just said…” “I won’t be reporting my finds to the police. But I have, on the other hand, already spoken to certain important members of the Jewish community. They understand the situation perfectly. The man is insane, Watson, and the best place for the insane is in an asylum, and that’s where he’ll be spending the rest of his miserable life.” “So that means, officially, the killer will never be caught,” said Watson. “No, Watson. Although my recent dealings with Inspector Abberline suggest that he may be smarter than I initially gave him credit for. Therefore, if any member of the police were capable of discovering the identity of the killer, it would be him. I also believe, however, that if he did so, he’d be intelligent enough to keep it to himself.” Watson was quiet for a few moments. “Holmes, do you think Jacob Levy was responsible for any other murders?” “I certainly do, Watson. The murder of Martha Tabran is without doubt an earlier victim of his. There are possible others, as well. The differences with the killings are due to him ‘learning his new trade’, as it were; discovering what method was the best for achieving his ultimate aims.” “Well all I can say, Holmes, is this has been some truly dark days for London, and for England as a whole.” “And may they never be inflicted on us again,” said Holmes. “Here here!” agreed Watson. “Oh, and Watson, it goes without saying, of course, that this is one case that you will never write about.” “Of course, Holmes.”
The End.
Author’s Note: This was inspired by a computer game called “Sherlock Holmes Vs Jack the Ripper”. Also, Jacob Levy was a real person and is one of the many suspects. The evidence I included here is real. I ran out of space in this story to include another piece of evidence. I also believe he is by far the most likely suspect. Jacob Levy died in an insane asylum in 1891, the same year the police suddenly and unexpectedly closed the files on the Jack the Ripper case.
