The Dreams
AN: Set between the 1st and 2nd books. For fellow TV Tropers, the mind game ship aspect to Jenny and Julian’s relationship always appealed to me.
Jenny found herself falling asleep in front of the TV. She glared at the can of Red Bull on the side. She didn’t want to sleep until she was too tired to dream. But it was no good. Her eyes closed and this time there was no jerk awake. She slid softly down the chair and slept.
She was sitting in the living room but it was different. There was an icy blue light and Julian walked in. He said something to her but she couldn’t hear him. She was too frightened. She backed away sobbing in terror. He sat down. Eventually she stopped crying enough to talk to him.
“Please let me go. Please stop. I can’t take it any more dreaming about you every night. Tom’s so angry. I think he knows.”
He smiled wolfishly.
“Jenny this is the first time I’ve been in your dreams since you trapped me in that house.”
“You’re lying,” Jenny sobbed, losing control again.
“I’m not,” he said gently “I only escaped today because some idiots found the box and let me out.”
Jenny paused and then lost control completely.
Julian sighed. He’d come into the dream at the wrong point. Jenny was in the wrong stage of her sleep cycle. This was no use to him. She was all instinct and it was mortal terror.
“Why are you afraid?” he asked her. He didn’t move.
At this point in her sleep she was basically a frightened animal but he wondered if talking would kick her onto the next stage of dreaming where he wanted her.
He stayed still and waited.
“You’ll kill me,” She was still crying so much she was barely coherent.
“No. I love you.”
“I don’t believe you.”
“Why?”
“I tricked you. You hate me.”
“No. I love you.”
The room in Jenny’s mind was shifting. He wondered if they were getting to the stage he wanted her at. Lucid dreaming. He kept still.
“Why would you love me?” she asked “I hate you. I’m afraid of you. I want Tom. He makes me feel safe.”
“Tom’s not here Jenny.”
She shifted uncomfortably.
“Why are you here?” she asked
He smiled triumphantly.
This was better.
“To help you a little, I guess,” he said honestly “I’ll be seeing you soon in your world and it’s going to spoil it for me if my wife is too terrified to greet me properly.”
Panic crossed her face again.
“I’m not- I- I was just playing your game, I’m not your wife. You tricked me, I tricked you”
For an answer he took her hand and held it up. The ring glinted on her finger.
He realised instantly this was a mistake.
She looked at him angrily.
“You shouldn’t be in here. And I’ll remember this and tell my friends.”
In an instant he was back in the Shadow Lands. She must have woken up. But even if she could remember enough to tell the little gang, he knew mortals. They would want to deny the truth as long as possible. Especially the fat little fearful one. But even brave Deidre as well.
“You can’t fight a Shadow,” he murmured.
He focused on Jenny and saw her. She was getting ready to sleep again but in her own bed this time. He wondered idly whether to attempt to talk to her again but he saw her hands were shaking a little. He could hear her heart beating hard. No, he would leave her be for now. He wanted her whole and his, but not broken. She was so close to coming to him of her own accord. That would be sweeter than making her. And little Tommy was making it incredibly easy. He had sensed Jenny’s recent unhappy memories of their fights. He waited for her to fall asleep again.
He looked at Jenny and smiled.
“A boy who would give you up without a fight is hardly worthy of you,” he whispered.
She frowned and turned over in her sleep as if away from him and he laughed.
Jenny woke up with a start and looked at the clock.
02.25.
She turned the light on.
There was no-one there. She was safe. It must have been in her head. He wasn’t here. He was trapped in the Shadow World. But like last night and the night before and the night before that it was over an hour before she could go back to sleep.
