I think I'm going to continue updating in 2-chapter increments. :) Depends, I guess.
Carlisle visited the next afternoon. It was Friday, and I could barely hold still for my excitement.
“Whitaker, you’re going to have to hold still, or the good doctor won’t be able to deem you well,” Gramps said, watching me squirm.
“Yes, sir,” I said, trying to be still. Carlisle laughed and changed the bandage on my nose. It was healing nicely, as were my bruises, for only a few days.
“You’re doing well, Whitaker. I’m impressed,” Carlisle stated.
“Thank you for coming out today, Dr. Cullen,” I said.
“It’s no problem. And, please, call me Carlisle.” I nodded. “May I ask what has you so excited today?” I lowered my head, willing my body not to blush. “Let me see… You’ve got a date?” he guessed. I nodded meekly.
“With Jasper?” Gramps asked. I nodded again.
“It will do Jasper good to get out.”
“I heard what happened…” I whispered.
“What happened?” Gramps asked. I looked to Carlisle for permission; he nodded.
“Jasper had a fiancée who just up and disappeared one day. He…shut down after that,” I explained. “Edward told me that he didn’t talk to anyone until I came along.”
“He didn’t,” Carlisle added. My grandfather smiled.
“You’re hard not to talk to, because most people are trying to tell you to shut up!” he joked. We all had a good laugh, and I was finally able to sit quietly.
Jasper came to get me around one the next day. I had dressed in jeans and one of my tighter-fitting, long-sleeved shirts. My usually limp, brown hair was misbehaving. For once, it wouldn’t lay flat. It was messy, but in a good way.
Gramps had told me to stop pacing numerous times. His excuse was he didn’t want a hole in the floor, but I knew he was just trying to calm me down.
My heart raced when I heard a car pull in the drive. Then, there was a knock at the door. Slowly, I answered the door. Jasper stood before me, dressed similarly, except he had an open, short-sleeved button-up over his long-sleeved shirt. His bright, blonde hair was its usual curly self.
“Hi,” I whispered.
“Hi,” he replied. “Ready to go?”
“Yeah. Bye, Gramps!” I called as we stepped out of the house.
“Be careful,” he called back. “Be home before tomorrow!”
“Wow,” Jasper murmured as we hopped in his car. “He trusts you, doesn’t he?”
“I’ve never done anything to cause him to mistrust me, so… Yeah, I guess. Plus, he knows I wouldn’t do anything dangerous or make him worry.”
“Just being in the car with me is dangerous.”
“Riding in any vehicle has its risks. I’ve ridden with you before. I trust you.” He shook his head at me, but he didn’t dispute what I said.
We went to the movies first. Jasper took me to see more than one, and we sat on the top row for each film.
“Why are we sitting in the makeout section?” I whispered before the second movie. Jasper tensed beside me.
“I didn’t realize we were,” he replied.
“Oh, come on. You had to know why most of the people on the top row are couples.”
“Is that what we are? A couple?” I could barely hear him.
“If being in a relationship right now scares you, then we don’t have to be. I’m content with being a friend…for now.” I smiled, and was pleased to see him smile in return.
“Thank you.”
“No problem. I understand that it could be hard for you to trust someone again.”
“I think it’s not that I’ve lost my trust in everyone, just the female part of the population. You’re the first guy I’ve ever been with.”
“You’re the first person I’ve been with. Period. End of sentence,” I admitted.
“You’ve never been in a relationship with anyone?” I shook my head as the lights went down. He took my hand. “Then I want to be your first.”
After the movies, it was evening, and Jasper drove towards his house. I wondered, but said nothing. When he parked the car, we walked to the clearing.
“I thought we could lie out here and watch the stars,” he informed me.
“I’d love to,” I smiled. I found a spot in the middle of the clearing and lay back. The night was clear, though the day had been cloudy.
“Are you hungry?”
“No. I had popcorn at the movies. I’m good.”
“Let me know if you want anything.” He lay next to me, but he didn’t watch the stars; he was lying on his side, looking at me. I turned my head.
“What is it?” I asked quietly. He was staring at me intently.
“Your eyes… They’re so beautiful,” he murmured. I blushed and looked away. “Hey.” His hand turned my face back to his. “Don’t hide them, please.”
I nodded.
“I’ve just never seen such a beautiful shade of green. It’s darker than emerald. It’s like…moss after a fresh rain. I love it.”
“Well, I’ve never seen eyes like yours, either. A mixture of gold and honey.” He looked away, just as I had. “If I can’t hide my eyes, then neither can you.” He looked back at me.
“I’ve never felt this way about someone before.”
“Neither have I.”
“Would it be all right if I…if I kissed you?”
My heart leapt into my throat and began beating faster at the same time. All I could do was nod before his lips were on mine, careful of my still-bandaged nose. It was gentle, yet passionate. It was soft pressure, yet firm desire. It was exquisite, and the best moment of my life.
Aww...first kiss! Yay!
Let me know what you're thinking, please. :)
