********Chapter 10: Beginnings*********
I found myself in a familiar place, hiding in the woods behind their home. Bella was there; I could hear her moving around. From the sound of it, she was in the kitchen. It was early morning; the sun had risen just a few minutes before.
I heard heavier footsteps padding toward the kitchen. “Bella,” Jake’s voice quietly rebuked her. “I thought you were going to take it easy.”
Bella laughed. “I was bored, Jake. Going crazy bored,” she added and I heard him laugh too. I could picture them in my mind all too easily. Bella would be fitting herself against the tall figure of Jacob Black, the gentle swell of her belly coming between them but somehow only brining them closer. His big hands would be tenderly cradling the life she sheltered within her, and his touch would be both reverent and solicitous.
“Why don’t you sit down and I’ll make us some breakfast?” Jake suggested. I heard the soft sound of kisses and then I heard Bella begin to breathe more heavily. Jake was not far behind. “Bella?” he asked in a whisper.
Without thought or invitation, I slipped into Jacob’s mind. His defenses were down and he was thinking only of Bella and what he wanted to do to her. He’d never know I was here. I saw the images flash through his mind…
Lifting Bella up on the counter, pushing her nightgown up and parting her thighs just before he slipped inside of her. Rocking into her with exquisite tenderness, taking her moans into his own mouth…
Lowering Bella to the breakfast table, kneeling in front of her…his lips pressed to her warm core…licking at her until she cried his name…
Wrapping her legs around his waist and taking her where they stood, thrusting up into her silken heat…
My own body reacted to Jake’s hunger.
Then I heard him sigh. “Bella, you know that the doctor said we should be careful.” The sound of a kiss. “Please…just wait a little…until we know it’s safe.”
My less noble side rejoiced at the fact that Jacob could not make love to her, at least for now. My jealousy and envy were not completely contained. And then I laughed bitterly, thinking how much Jake’s admonitions sounded like my own protests when Bella had asked me to make love to her. I had wanted to, more than almost anything else in the world. Even now, looking back, I wasn’t sure where I had found the strength to resist her.
Bella sighed with resignation, bringing me back to the moment. “All right then, if you’re not going to make love to me, then I’ll let you cook me some breakfast.” She laughed. “If you can’t satisfy my one appetite then you’d better do your damndest on the other.”
More pots and pans rattled and clanged. I heard something drop and a muttered curse. Bella giggled. “You’re not supposed to add the egg shells to an omelet,” she offered helpfully.
“They add fiber,” Jake retorted solemnly. “And vitamins.” He paused. “We’ll let that cook slow for a few minutes.”
Something dropped. A splat.
Another curse and more giggles from Bella. Then there was silence for a moment. Once more, I intruded into Jake’s mind. I wanted to see her, if only through the filter of his thoughts. She was looking up at him with love shimmering in her warm, brown eyes. I watched her hand lifted and brush back his long hair. “I love you, Jacob Black,” she said quietly.
Her lips were traveling up his throat and I felt him shudder against her. I could almost feel her breath on MY flesh. I trembled with him. “Oh Bella…”
Bella slipped out of his embrace and fell to her knees with more grace than I would have thought possible from a pregnant woman. She stared up at him with a mischievous expression, licking her lips. “You know,” she said in a low, sultry voice. “There are…other things…that…we could…” Bella ran one hand up Jake’s powerful thigh and her lips pursed.
I watched Jake lower his hand to her hair; I watched his hand tremble. I felt the silk of her hair spilling over my own hand. “Bella…” Her name came out on aching whisper from both of us.
I ran then, unable to bear their happiness any longer.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ashamed of my intrusion, embarrassed by my overreaction to a very natural moment between two people who loved each other, I tried to find solace in the knowledge that I was doing the right thing. I hunted again, though I had neither the appetite nor the heart for it. Still, it was a way to pass some time. I dreaded going back to the house again. As much as I loved my family, I could not yet face them.
I skirted the edge of the reservation. Jake and Bella were closer to Forks, I did not want to be around my family, and that left me with the Quileute territory. I was careful not to cross the line, but I ran along it, letting my senses tell me who and what had been there before me.
I was not surprised to catch the scent of wolf. This was, after all, their home. Apparently he smelled me too, for I heard his startled thoughts. Then there WAS a surprise. /Wait!/ the wolf called. /I hope you can hear me. Let me phase./
Before I could formulate an answer to the unexpected request, I heard the soft thud of paws running toward me. I forced myself into a relaxed stance, not wanting to risk any misunderstanding. Then the sound stopped in a small grouping of trees and I felt the air shimmer. I knew then that a wolf had phased.
A young man, almost as tall as Jacob, but more slender and clad only in black shorts, stepped toward me. Accustomed as I was to the hostility from Jacob, at least until recently, I was surprised to see a friendly, welcoming smile on the young man’s face.
He held out his hand – a first – and grinned. “I’m Seth Clearwater,” he said. “You must be Edward.”
Seth didn’t flinch when my cold hand closed around his hot one. “Yes,” I said with a nod of my head. “It’s very nice to meet you.”
Laughing, Seth seemed to find nothing odd in our encounter. He acted as if it was an everyday occurrence for a werewolf and a vampire to exchange courteous pleasantries. Even his thoughts were kind, betraying nothing more than an honest curiosity about me and my kind. As far as Seth Clearwater was concerned, there was no need for us to be enemies. We already shared a common enemy, and that was enough for Seth.
I found myself like the young man instinctively.
“Jake told us you’re here to help protect Bella,” Seth explained. “And I’ve wanted to meet you ever since I started phasing and they told me that all the old legends were true.”
I could see into Seth’s thoughts, and he was fascinated that a myth had come to life, so to speak, and that he could actually talk to one of us. I was amused that Seth, who was clearly just as mythical as I was, would even care. He looked me up and down, but there was nothing challenging in his gaze. “This is so COOL!” he finally said, giving another laugh. “My sister would have a cow.”
I tried very hard not to smile, afraid he would think I was making fun of him. But I wasn’t. It was just impossible NOT to be happy around Seth Clearwater. I had never encountered a mind like his, and I counted myself fortunate to have done so now. “Your sister would not approve, I take it?” I asked, my lips twitching.
Seth rolled his eyes. “That’s putting it mildly,” he replied. “But she moved about two years ago, after…” I saw the sorrow flash through his thoughts. I quickly shied away from whatever he was thinking.
“I’m sorry,” I said automatically.
He grimaced. “Yeah, that must get annoying, reading people’s thoughts like that.”
I laughed at that, because usually others seem to get the impression that reading minds would be a wonderful ability. Seth, however, had seen right through to the heart of the matter. It WAS annoying at times. I shrugged. “Sometimes it’s a bit awkward,” I agreed.
“Yeah,” Seth shuddered. “It’s bad enough with my brothers, I can’t imagine if I could read EVERYONE’S mind.” He shook his head. “That would totally suck.”
Not everyone’s mind, I thought to myself. There was one mind which was ever silent to me.
“Yes, well, it’s something I’ve gotten used to anyway,” I said.
Seth seemed to sense that I wanted to change the subject and seemed willing enough to oblige me. “So, you’re gonna help us kill the redheaded bitch?” It seemed the whole pack referred to Victoria the same way. I couldn’t blame them.
“That’s the plan,” I said. “Well, me and my family.”
“Yeah, I heard they’d arrived,” Seth remarked. He paused. “Do you think I’ll get to meet them too?”
“I don’t see why not,” I said. “That is, if Jake agrees.”
“I already told him I’ll run that patrol with you and your brother,” Seth explained. “But I was hoping to meet all of you.” He grinned. “Never know when I’ll get a chance like this again.”
Laughing, I could only imagine Jacob’s face when his pack brother explained how he’d like to go visit the vampire family. “Well, it’s been a while since we’ve met a pack of wolves, so it will prove interesting to us all.”
“Cool,” Seth said. “I keep forgetting that you were around when our great-grandfathers were doing the phase thing. Man, the stories you could tell…” He shook his head, obviously enthralled with the possibilities. “Listen, I’ve got to finish running a patrol. If you don’t have anything to do would you wanna…” He stopped and looked embarrassed. “Well, since we’re gonna run a patrol together anyway, why not finish this one with me? Sort of a test run.” He laughed. “And when we don’t kill each other, maybe it will make the rest of the pack relax.”
“I’d love to run with you,” I replied, glad to have something to do.
“Great,” Seth said. “Let me phase and we’ll get going.”
He flashed into the trees and the air shimmered once more. A few moments later a wolf padded toward me, a small rectangular bundle tied to a leg.
At least it wasn’t pink spandex.
