Sookie was bound in a nightmare and as soon as her dream eyes opened she knew where she was. It was exactly as the nuns had described it. Rivers of blood wove through the ruins of what could only be Sodom and Gomorrah. Naked ladies with rouged cheeks and sultry expressions went from one hideous half man half beast after the other rutting as their bodies were immolated.
Suddenly a horned man approached her and gave an exaggerated bow clearly mocking her “Oh how odd you were slated for the other place,” he drawled. He was despite his horns devastatingly attractive. Bright green eyes and loosely curled black hair. He stepped closer to her close enough for her to smell his breath; it was scented with blood. One clawed hand went between her legs and he shoved into her with two fingers. She screamed and he smiled as she grew wet “You have come to this place of eternal damnation because of this,” he said digging deeper. “Why couldn’t you resist Countess? Now the wind will howl and everlasting darkness will be your only sight,” with that the Father of Lies entered her and as he pinned her to the ground his face changed; his eyes turning blue, his hair golden. She awoke screaming. Eric’s eyes snapped open and he turned and embraced her cruelly. He rolled on top of her and entered her roughly. She began to scream over and over, he struck her into silence. She felt blood trickling from her mouth. She stared up at him unable to believe his beauty was still so compelling to her. “Stop,” she begged as she pounded his chest and face. The Duke smirked down at her “Yes fight me,” he murmured. Sookie to her horror could feel herself growing moist as she stared into his eyes. The pain faded replaced with a gripping evil pleasure. “I hate you,” she whispered thrashing below him. Eric smiled viciously picking up her fragile body the better to plumb her depths. He began to batter her, feeling her slickness that was so arousing and surprising. She wanted him, she had admitted it and her body was giving into him. “Please be gentle,” she whimpered. Eric shook his head “No, I fuck hard you’ll just have to get used to it.” With that he pounded like a madman and she knew her body would be bruised all over. She came to her climax and despised him for it and his gorgeous eyes filled with a savage triumph and he pulled out and pumped his seed on her face. Sookie lay broken and weakly wiped her eyes before Eric tossed her a towel. She finished wiping her face off and threw it at him “You have made me a fallen woman,” she shouted. “I will burn now,” she became hysterical tearing at her hair and the Duke stepped toward her. He slapped her hard and his eyes narrowed “Shut up.” He turned his back on her and made a drink pivoting he took his seat before the fire “The only hell that exists is right here on this miserable planet and the unending boredom of existence until you die and blow away,” he sounded thoughtful and sad. Sookie got off the bed and made for the door “Stay.” She turned and gazed at him “Why should I?” Eric’s eyes were shadowed with some undefinable emotion “Because I command it.” Sookie slowly came toward him, each step agonizing. Eric gestured to a space on the rug beside him “Sit down.” She sank with unconscious grace into a heap, her legs going under her and his eyes flickered to her for instant “What am I to do with you?” he asked softly. Sookie made no response and bowed her head. He took a long swallow of his whiskey and smacked it down to the cart. “There are certain things best left uncovered,” he said as he finished his beverage. Eric reached for the decanter and the sound of his pouring was like a river for an instant. Suddenly his head turned to her “Do you know that the real enemy is memory? Do you know how I’ve longed to wipe it from my soul?” Sookie nodded “Yes,” she said softly. Eric glowered at her but seemed to see right through her “She stood by and let him destroy us,” he muttered slamming his drink back. She lifted her eyes “Who?” His face was turned to the fire and he seemed to be mesmerized by its primal dance “It doesn’t matter I suppose,” he said quietly ignoring her. Suddenly his expression turned volatile “You seek to destroy me,” he snarled standing over her. She scampered back her hands covering her face “Please Eric don’t hurt me,” she cried. His hands curled into fists “You mean nothing to me, do you know that?” Sookie nodded desperately as she curled into a ball at his feet. Eric glared down at her “Tell me that you want me,” he snarled. She gazed up at him in between her parted fingers “No,” she whispered. The Duke of Ravenheart scowled “Do you think I asked for this face that draws lying whores to me like shit does flies?” Eric leaned down with a harsh grip on her and threw her against the wall. His massive hands went to her throat “Either you tell me that you want me buried in you or I choke you as I did Evelyn,” he growled. Sookie screamed and he smacked her and immediately her face began to swell “I would rather die than then say that! Don’t you know he is listening?” Eric’s stunning blue eyes with their thick dark lashes narrowed “Who the fuck is he?” Sookie sobbed “God, he sees me and he wept when I felt that with you,” she cried. “You are more evil than the Devil and I…” she broke off and sagged in his grasp. He smiled wickedly “And you want me,” he said finishing her thought. He moved brutally and swiftly as he pushed inside her. He took her against the wall and Sookie realized to her horror that she was still wet from before. When it was over he closed his pants and sat once more before the hearth. “Sit down I am going to tell you a tale,” he murmured. She sank down beside him and he thrust a glass of strong spirits into her hand. “Drink it.” She did and gagged as it burned through her. Eric’s face was terrible in its beauty and wrath and when he began to speak his words fell like snow across her besieged mind; cold and lovely. “I was a boy then,” he began with his eyes on the flickering orange light. “You see when you are a child it takes time to realize that there is no hope.” For a long moment he was silent as he finished his glass. He had seemed to forget that she was there beside him as he continued “She loved him more than me or Seth, I realized it when I was still clinging to her,” his voice was raw and unguarded as it had never been before. Eric filled his glass once more and took a long swallow “She knew about the child that we killed, she told me as she lay dying in my arms.” Sookie lifted her head and gazed at him almost hypnotized by the symmetry of his profile “Child?” she whispered against her better judgment. The Duke nodded “Yes we were forced to beat a child to death as he looked on,” he turned his eyes on her and she nearly collapsed with the pain in their depths. His expression became cold then “I have confessed to you what I’ve never once said out loud and I wonder now why I have spoken of it,” slowly his head turned back to the fire. “Leave me, you need to rest you have a long day ahead of you,” he sighed out finishing his drink. Sookie rose “Please give me something to cover with,” she pleaded. He stood and tossed her a spare cloak. She closed the door quietly behind her and returned to her own bed. For a long time she was afraid to sleep again afraid that she would be in Hell once more. The sun rose when Mrs. Maple came to get her. She didn’t smile in greeting and said without preamble “From now on I won’t be getting you up, you are a servant just like the rest of them and I expect you to see to getting yourself awake and readied for the day,” her voice was brisk and she stared pointedly at Sookie’s nightgown. Sookie nodded “Just give me a moment to dress,” she said closing the door. She donned the horrible itchy uniform and followed her down the stairs. The servants were becoming accustomed to her now and though some were still mean most left her alone. She sat down at breakfast and actually choked down half a bowl of gruel. She was beginning to realize that if she didn’t start eating she would die. And she had no wish to burn for her wicked ways sooner than she had to. To her surprise Mrs. Maple put the sugar before her bowl and gave her a tiny spoonful of it. Sookie glanced up with amazement at her and she gave her a smile that lived only in her eyes. “You have worked very hard since the beginning of your employment here,” she explained. Sookie gave her a grateful smile and then breakfast was concluded. The duty of scrubbing the bowls fell to someone else today for the first time. She was told by Gemma that she was to dust as many rooms as possible today. Sookie was left to her own initiative and given the supplies she needed; a soft cloth and a bottle of polish. She was told to only use a small amount as there were endless items to do and the polish was expensive. Around noon she was entered his study and as she was dusting his desk she saw a letter tucked in a cubby hole. Curiosity got the better of her as she unfolded it. This is what it read: “Brother, I have been traveling across the continents and my thoughts are often inclined towards you. There are endless pleasures to be had to kill the constant boredom that I suffer from. I have received the funds that you sent me and the letter. I am interested in this girl that you have acquired and I hope that you are finding her company stimulating. So many well bred women are disgustingly false and utterly without charm. As I write this I am in a coach on a rocky road in Romania but my final destination is Paris where I hope that you will meet me for a long overdue visit. With devotion your brother Seth. Written in the year of Our Lord Eighteen Hundred on the 15th day of December. Sookie realized that she was sitting and she quickly replaced the note after carefully refolding it precisely as it had been. She finished the rest of the room and left to do the gentlemen’s parlor beside the study. Her day was peaceful and she had noticed that her duties were much lighter and had been for awhile now. She wondered about that as she finished the downstairs. Gemma came to find her after she was finished dusting “His Lordship has awoken and wishes to see you and says that you are to be excused for the rest of the day,” her voice held no resentment but her eyes were shadowed with some emotion. Sookie thanked her and went to wash her hands and face before doing as she was commanded. She made her way slowly upstairs each step bringing new dread. His strange mood of last night was with her as constant her shadow. That he had been forced to beat a child was heartbreaking and it gave her yet another aspect of him. Despite her hatred of him her heart went out to him. With that thought she knocked timidly on his door. “Enter,” his voice said. She opened the door and he sitting in his usual place before the fire. “Sit down here next to me,” he said pointing at the floor. She did so and she saw that he was eating a bizarre meal. It consisted of bacon which he was now spreading jam on and beside it on the large tray were eggs drenched in what appeared to be onions and tomato sauce. He took a carful bite and chewed, then patted his mouth with a napkin. “I am leaving for a time. I have business of a personal nature to attend to in Paris. You may accompany me if you wish,” he wasn’t looking at her but at his food. Sookie was surprised and her face must have shown that for when he did glance up he smirked “I suppose it’s quite shocking that I am giving you a choice in the matter,” he murmured. She nodded while a faint smile crept across her lips “Yes it’s a shock,” she said softly. Eric took another bite which combined the bacon and eggs, he chewed and swallowed. “While we are in Paris you will speak only to me and should I discover that you have tried to enlist the aid of anyone there will be terrible consequences,” he had seemed to forget that he had given her a choice in the matter. The Duke gave her a lingering gaze studying her “Have you eaten today?” Sookie nodded “Yes Your Grace I ate almost a full bowl of porridge.” Eric graced her with a rare genuine smile “That pleases me,” he paused and pushed the cart to the side “I have commissioned that a portrait of you be done but I wish to wait until your face has filled out.” Sookie’s mouth fell open “But why?” He smirked “Because right now you look emaciated.” She shook head “No I meant why are you having my portrait painted?” He gave an elegant shrug “Do not pretend to be ignorant of your great beauty, I dislike false modesty,” he snapped. She stood “May I be excused?” Eric nodded and waved his hand “You have the rest of the day off, do something relaxing.” Sookie almost smiled at him as she did her curtsy and departed. “May I take a walk today?” she asked at the door. He glanced back “Yes I will tell James to accompany you.” James came to meet her at the back door. He was dressed warmly in a fur lined coat and thick pants. He was a strange person she had come to realize as the days passed with him as her guard. He had never once spoken to her and rarely looked at her with anything besides a vast lack of interest. He was handsome with an unusual arresting face. His eyes were gray his hair dark brown. His nose had been broken some time in his life but that only gave his face character. His bottom lip was thinner than his top. He opened the door and stepped out and she followed. The snow had melted and the ground was soft as they walked through the gardens. Sookie looked over at him “James why do you never speak to me?” James looked over and down at her “Why should I?” his tone wasn’t unkind merely confused. Sookie shrugged as they entered a garden filled with winter blooms “How long have you worked for his Lordship?” she inquired as the wove through fountains and riotous flowers. James stared at her for a long time before replying “Since I was a boy of ten.” Sookie brushed a pile of forgotten snow from a stone bench and sat and James took a place beside her. She peered over at him from the edge of her drawn hood “What was he like then?” James sighed his breath showing “I don’t think I should be telling you that,” he muttered. Sookie small gloved hand went to his arm and she gazed into his face “It’s alright James I would never tell him anything that you say,” she insisted. Slowly their eyes met and he nodded “He was strange even then, he didn’t drink as much and his rages were more infrequent, he frightened me,” he admitted quietly. Sookie inched closer to her guard “And now?” James gloved hands went to his head “And now I feel only pity for him, he is the loneliest saddest man I’ve ever known,” James stood and took her arm “Come it’s too cold to sit still.” They finished their walk and at the back door she crooked her finger at him. “James bend down,” she whispered. His face was filled with surprise and curiosity and when his head neared hers she kissed his cheek “Thank you,” she said softly. James patted her shoulder and had no reply as they came inside. The following days were as close to happiness as she had had since coming to this gloomy abode. Eric didn’t demand her presence and was gone for the majority of the time. She forced herself to eat at every meal even if it were only a few bites at a time. She felt herself gaining back her form slowly but surely. Her duties were light. Suddenly one day as she entered a ballroom Amanda came to her mind. It occurred to her that she hadn’t once seen her since her imprisonment in the dungeon. She cleaned the long mirror of the room and went to find Gemma. “Where is Amanda? Why haven’t I seen her?” she queried once she found her. Gemma was busy polishing silver as it was Monday, she glanced up “Amanda’s position in this house was terminated,” she replied quickly looking back down at the shining cutlery. Sookie sat down and began helping her “But why?” Gemma sighed heavily “That is his Lordship’s concern I’m sure I don’t know why.” She let it go then and together the two maids finished their task. Gemma was relieved that the Duke seemed to have tired of her and she felt a pang of pity for the girl beside her. He was insane; she had known that since she came to work for him when she was girl of fifteen. The next day was bright with only a smattering of light clouds to mar the brilliant blue of the sky. Sookie got dressed in her uniform and made her way down the stairs. At breakfast the Duke entered the room. The conversations died as his gaze took in his employees “Hello,” he said abruptly with his eyes on Sookie. “Come with me,” he said curtly to her. She rose and followed giving her peers a look full of apology. Eric turned to her with beautiful smile “You are once more restored,” he said softly seeing that her face was now returned to its former glory. Sookie smiled tentatively back at him “Yes I have been eating at every meal.” He placed a hand to her arm and they walked side by side up the stairs “We are leaving for Paris tonight, I want you to pack and meet me in the foyer at six o’ clock.” They went their separate ways and she did as he wished. When the grandfather clocks chimed in unison on the appointed hour she met him with her valise and a warm cloak on with the hood drawn around her face. He came down the stairs toward her with another rare smile. When he finally stood in front of her he bent down and kissed her cheek “You look ravishing,” he whispered in her ear. She flushed prettily “Thank you Your Grace.” The Duke of Ravenheart gazed into her eyes and then winked and took her arm “Shall we?” he asked with a grand wave of his arm as he opened the door. She climbed into the gilded coach beside him, the door shut as the driver closed it and it began to roll down the endless drive. The journey to Paris had begun. BTW, there are probably are shit ton of errors in these chapters as they aren’t the polished ones that used to be on FF.net, but I don’t have the time to fix them all and I’m too lazy, my apologies. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
