Edward held up the small oval chip for all to see. “Just swallow this,” he told Anita, “and we’ll be able to keep track of you.”
“What’s its range?” Micah asked and took it from Edward for a better look before handing it to Anita. He hated the idea of her letting herself be captured, but he also understood why she thought she needed to do it. Anita would never forgive herself in anything happened to the werewolf, particularly if she believed it was her fault that he had been taken in the first place.
“Five miles,” Edward answered and sat back on his heels while he opened a well padded leather case. “That’s pretty good since she has to swallow it,” he repeated and eyed her curiously. Anita scowled and then popped it into her mouth and swallow. Nathaniel helped it go down by handing her a cup of coffee. She stuck her tongue out as proof that she had swallowed it. Chuckling to himself, Edward showed them an elaborate tracking system and switched it on. “This is how we’ll know where she is,” he explained as Shang-Da and Jamil crouched at his back for a better look.
“And we’ll know where she and our Ulfric are?” Jamil asked curiously.
“Yes,” Edward assured him. He still didn’t like the monsters as a whole, but some of them were proving to be interesting people.
“So, now what do we do?” Anita asked curiously.
“Get you captured,” Edward said and shut the case before he stood up. He looked at Anita and Micah’s jogging clothes. “I’m certain they’re watching the house.”
“I think I ought to go with them,” Nathaniel said uncomfortably. He had offered to go with Anita first, but Micah had over ruled him. If only one of them could go with her, then it was to be the Nimir-Raj.
“I don’t care who goes,” Edwards growled, “but you can’t take the entire pard. They won’t move against you with all the cats along.” He smiled at Anita, but the statement was for the other wereleopards. Clingy kitties, he thought, not good.
“Nathaniel will stay here and help Cherry with Jason,” Anita said firmly, her eyes on Nathaniel. There was going to be trouble, and she didn’t want him getting hurt or interfering with their plan.
“Can I at least ride with Edward?” Nathaniel asked hopefully. “Gregory and Stephen and Vivian can help Cherry with Jason.”
“No,” Anita said as she moved towards the door. If the bad guys needed an isolated place to make their move, she was going to give it to them, an isolated dirt road farther away from the city. Edward was of the opinion that they were now moving in to catch her and wouldn’t be too far away.
Nathaniel went to the kitchen, a sulk on his face as Anita and Micah drove away. This wasn’t right; he could have helped. Looking out the window, he saw the sudden flash of binoculars! The spy! The spy was behind the house on a hill. Grabbing Gregory, who had followed him into the kitchen, he pointed and smiled. “Let’s go catch him,” Nathaniel quietly suggested. Gregory smiled.
Edward and the two werewolves were just getting ready to take off after Anita when Nathaniel and Gregory stalked around the house with a man between them. “Oh, shit!” Edward hissed. “Who the hell is that?” he yelled at the leopards.
“You’re spy!” Nathaniel called back proudly.
“And we heard him talking to someone on this radio,” Gregory said and held it up for Edward to see.
Edward, thoroughly disgusted, looked at Shang-Da sitting in the seat beside him and then back at Jamil and asked, “Can either of you tell me why she hasn’t shot those two, yet?” Both werewolves shrugged their shoulders and then climbed out of the jeep.
“Why are you upset?” Nathaniel asked, surprised that they were not pleased with his capture.
“Because the bad guys will probably change their plans and not take Anita to Richard,” Edward explained as he started the jeep up. Pulling out his hand radio, he raised Micah and told him about the snafu. “I don’t think they’ll take Anita to Richard now,” he explained.
“They must!” Anita answered back, the anger clear in her voice. “Nathaniel!” she screamed in anger.
Half cowing, Nathaniel took the hand radio from Edward, who was looking sardonically amused, and said, “Anita, I thought I was helping. Honest. I thought I was helping.”
“More help like that,” Edward said to Jamil, “and your Ulfric is a dead man.” Jamil didn’t say anything but nodded his head, although Shang-Da’s scowl sent a chill of fear through the two wereleopards. Taking the radio from Nathaniel, Edward asked Anita, “What do you want to do?”
“Micah and I are coming back,” Anita said. “I want to talk to this man.”
“They’ll move Richard,” Edward told her.
“They probably already have,” Anita growled back. “And tell Nathaniel he and Gregory need to be somewhere else when I get there.”
Joe Bailey, the Chicago witch, was not surprised that Niley’s hunter Lassiter was now in Anita’s hands. He had warned Niley about sending a human to spy on the weres. Oh, this was turning to a comedy of errors. Everyone wanted Anita dead, but all they had was her werewolf lover. Now Niley was debating on whether or not he should contact Anita using Lassiter’s cell phone, which was now in their possession, too.
“You will just have to offer to release Richard if she surrenders herself,” he suggested to the pacing Niley.
“She will never believe that,” Niley protested.
“Well you need to do something quick,” the witch said and walked over to Richard’s chained body, “because I don’t think Lassiter is a strong enough man to keep secrets with werewolves and vampires breathing in his face.” He didn’t know if the vamps were up yet, but he suspected they were, and they didn’t need to take the interstate or any side streets to get here.
“Where do you suggest we go?” Niley asked angrily. “And don’t touch him!”
“The safest place I can think of is the gathering place,” Joe Bailey answered and laid his hand on Richard’s slowly moving chest. “My people are waiting there, and the vamps and weres won’t know where it is. Besides if anyone does show up, I have people who know how to deal with those problems.” Bailey flashed his sharpened teeth and snapped them together, taunting Niley with them.
Enraged that the witch was challenging him, Niley moved with a sudden burst of speed that amazed the witch. Shoving him back against the wall, his hand on Bailey’s throat, Niley hissed, “I said don’t touch him.”
“Then I will,” the demoness said and materialized behind them. “You were supposed to capture Anita Blake tonight, and I don’t see her.”
“Lassiter was captured,” Niley apologized. “She did not appear at the capture site. We need to move Richard now if we are to keep him as bait.”
“I suppose,” the demoness said and curled her nails over Richard’s exposed abdomen. She dug them in and drew blood, the connection allowing her to sift through Richard’s mind for Anita. The sudden pain and probing opened a small window in his mind and permitted the demoness a short contact with Anita.
Anita staggered and grabbed the edges of the kitchen table. Micah and Edward reached for her, but she hissed, “ No!”
“Anita, what is wrong?” Edward asked and stayed at her side but kept his hands off her. The two werewolves were also close; their faces alert and ready to act.
“Hello, Anita,” the demon greeted her through her precarious link.
“Kisskillum,” Anita answered, hoping the boys realized what was happening without interfering.
“You have our hunter,” the demoness said, her nails digging deeper into Richard to keep the link open. Pain was such a useful tool sometimes.
“And you have our Ulfric,” Anita gasped, feeling Richard’s pain in her gut. She needed a chair to sit in. Micah got it for her without having to be asked. Good for him. She sat down and held one hand tight to her belly. “We were just getting ready to come get him.”
“You would kill others to rescue one werewolf?”
Anita frowned. “What do you suggest I do to avoid that?” she asked and then added, “To avoid getting anyone else killed?”
Nathaniel who had stayed back out of the way started shaking his head no. He knew Anita was about to cut a deal with the demoness. When Damien appeared, he grabbed the vampire and pleaded with him to make her stop.
“Nathaniel, shut up!” Anita snapped at him. She had never raised her voice to him before, and it upset her to see him cower from her, but he really needed to be quiet. Cherry took Damien aside and gave him the abbreviated version of what had happened that afternoon. “Are you still there?” Anita asked the voice in her head.
“Family problems, what can one say?” the demoness asked whimsically. “We are getting ready to move Richard to the killing ground. I will contact you again tonight. That way you can think about what you want to do.”
“I know what I want to do,” Anita half shouted. “I’ll make a trade with you. Me for Richard.” But the voice in her head had shut down. “Damn!” she cursed and looked at Edward and then at the other anxious faces at the table. “The demoness is going to contact me later. They’re taking him to the killing ground. I’m guessing that’s where they want to finish me off at.”
She rested her head on her crossed arms on the table. There was a rap at the door and then it opened. The vamps had arrived. Looking up as Jean-Claude, Asher, The Wicked Truth and Requiem entered her kitchen. If it hurt Micah’s feelings, his face didn’t show it, when Anita got up and went to Jean-Claude and let him hug her.
“That Kisskillum bitch just spoke to me,” she told him, her face partially hidden in the smooth fabric of his shirt.
“I know, Ma Petite, I heard it too,” Jean-Claude said softly and glanced at the bound human sitting ever so quietly at the kitchen table. “This is the hunter who captured our wolf?”
Anita, who had not realized that she had started crying, wiped her face when she looked around and said, “Yeah, that’s him. He’s given us directions to where they are keeping Richard, but we’d have never gotten there in time.”
“Perhaps,” Jean-Claude said and looked at Asher. “Perhaps he can show you and The Wicked Truth where Richard has been kept.”
“Excellent idea, mon ami,” Asher said with a smile that Lassiter did not like. He liked it even less when the two brothers helped him stand and then removed his ropes.
“Whatever you do,” Wicked said, “do not let go of my hand.”
“It would be most unpleasant, if you did,” Truth added as they led him outside.
Lassiter’s fading scream actually put a smile on Edward’s face. “Shall we follow in the vehicles now that everyone is here?”
