Chapter 11
-------------
Jarlaxle stood there expectantly.
Artemis raised an eyebrow at him. The assassin then turned and left.
Jarlaxle sighed. "Later, then?"
Artemis pretended not to hear him.
Jarlaxle left the room as well, casting a regretful look at Artemis' bed.
The mercenary captain spent the rest of the day in Menzoberranzan, sorting through reports and job requests in his office. Much had happened since even last week. Menzoberranzan was still destabilized from Matron Baenre's death, though the biggest tremors had already faded into uneasy memory.
Three different Matrons wanted Bregan D'aerthe to spy on lesser Houses for them (Jarlaxle granted these requests with only cursory glances).
In addition, there were two more job offers that required much more thought.
One Matron wanted him to ensure the assassination of one of her sons. He didn't know what the young man had done to deserve this, or if the man had any useful talents. Of course, being Jarlaxle, if this son of hers had a useful talent, he would simply change 'assassinate' to 'remove' in his head and take the job. That way, she wouldn't have to deal with her son, and he would add another asset to his mercenary band.
The mercenary leader gritted his teeth when he read the last paper lying on his desk. Someone wanted the extermination of a band of Vhaeraun worshippers hiding inside the city.
Jarlaxle didn't favor Vhaeraun - nor did he admire the god. Too dark, too selfish, and too bent on revenge against female kind. No, Vhaeraun's goals were too short-sighted to suit the mercenary.
But on the other hand, Jarlaxle did have a soft spot for those who opposed Lloth.
He brushed away his feelings of loss surrounding Zaknafein and pursed his lips, writing a note telling himself to accept the job. At a higher price.
-------
When Jarlaxle returned to the Basadoni guild, it was nightfall. He was slightly disappointed to have missed the phenomenon of daylight, but he was also excited at the fact that it was when humans retreated to their beds.
He reminded himself of the wonderful news that Artemis had accepted him as a lover and sneaked to Artemis' door, smiling. He knocked politely.
"Come in."
Jarlaxle ignored the lack of invitation in Artemis' voice and slipped inside, shutting the door behind him. He let his eyes wander over the sight of his dear assassin already in bed, no doubt to keep his routine of waking early. "How are you this evening?"
"I don't think you care one way or the other, Jarlaxle."
"I do!" Jarlaxle protested. "What is this, Artemis? A change of heart already?"
The assassin would never admit it, even if it were true. However, his reluctance showed anyway in the action of moving deeper under the covers. "You expect me to let you touch my body without a single..." He trailed off and was silent. Artemis was, in fact, reminding himself of Jarlaxle's ignorance in the way of humans. "Prove that I can trust you." Artemis sat up and fixed Jarlaxle with a stony stare, daring him to step closer.
"I will never cause you pain." Jarlaxle took off his hat and held it in his hands. He took a step forward. "I didn't hurt you the first time, and this time, we'll do it on your terms. There is no need to look at me that way. Our past has been reconciled."
"My terms?"
"Yes."
Artemis looked away from him. "Then you may as well come here. You'll do so eventually, whether I want you to or not."
Jarlaxle thought it wasn't the best time to dispute that, so he silently did as Artemis suggested. He sat down on the edge of the bed. "Tell me, Artemis. Why is it such a big occurence to you, what I did? I truly don't know, and I want to understand you."
Artemis' jaw clenched. "I can't tell you, because it is none of your business, and you would not care if I did."
"I would care," Jarlaxle scolded quietly. "I have an interest in you. I am not without compassion, Artemis."
"You are not without cruelty, either. Speak no more of making me tell you something I don't wish to divulge, and you may stay for tonight."
"Alright," Jarlaxle said. He hesitantly set down his hat on a nightstand and slipped underneath the covers beside the assassin. Now his smile was gone. Artemis' grave behavior was beginning to change his perceptions about what he could expect from this relationship.
Artemis looked at him incredulously. "You can follow orders so well?"
"I am drow." Jarlaxle tried to keep the bitterness off his face. "Orders are nothing new. You should know that, Artemis."
Artemis was silent. Finally, he turned away. "I apologize."
Jarlaxle stared at him. Now he was lost in the conversation again. "What?"
"Apologize. It is an act you should learn to emulate," Artemis snapped. "I apologized for my misconduct, and the way I expected you to jump me again."
"I don't know what to do with an apology."
"Accept it."
"I accept it."
Artemis slapped his forehead and turned a glare on the mercenary. "No, not like that. You are supposed to take into consideration that I now see my behavior was erroneous."
Jarlaxle sat there a while. "You...acted reasonably. I suppose there is no other response to what I did with you, if you found it abhorrent." He didn't even know why he was having this conversation. It made him uncomfortable.
There was an expression on Artemis' face he couldn't read. "Thank you," he said simply.
"For what?"
Artemis groaned. "Never mind. Let me put it this way." He motioned impatiently for Jarlaxle to lean forward.
Frowning, Jarlaxle did so.
Artemis wrapped his arms around Jarlaxle's neck and kissed him deeply. Then he pulled away, leaving Jarlaxle's head reeling. "You acted correctly."
"I did, huh?" Jarlaxle felt unusually warm.
"Yes. Do that again, and you might find something greater waiting for you." Artemis turned over and went to sleep.
Jarlaxle couldn't sleep all night.
