They had been wandering for about an hour, not really doing much besides walking and peering through the windows of the few shops scattered throughout the residences of the area below the academy. Although Jas found it all rather mundane, and indeed had been steering them subtly in a certain direction, it was obvious that Drizzt was quite fascinated by their surroundings. Trying to peer in all directions at once, excitedly pointing things out to his companion, to Jas it was like escorting someone who had never been to Menzoberranzan instead of someone who grew up there. Jas wondered at this, it was as if Drizzt had never been outside his own house. The younger drow still wasn’t exactly open about such things, preferring to impart information only when directly asked; Jas would have to make a point to ask later, but for now, it did lend a bit of excitement to just walking around aimlessly. However, it wasn’t getting a bit tiresome, and he was ready to move on to more interesting things.
“Hey, do you have any specific place you were wanting to go,” he asked after dragging Drizzt’s attention away from a small display of trinkets and jewelry embedded with lines of pastel hues of faerie fire.
“Uh-uh. Just wanted to be out..” he replied, eyes drifting back to the display.
“That’s just junk. Eye-catching, but junk, and over-priced junk as well. I have somewhere in mind we can go.”
Drizzt shrugged. “Does it involve food? I’m getting a bit hungry.”
“Well, no, but there’s a hundred or so of those food carts on the way. Have you ever been to a dance club before?”
“No. What is it?”
“Oh, music, pretty lights, that sort of thing.” Jas, replied vaguely gesturing towards the softly glowing jewelry stand.”
Drizzt shrugged again. “Ok, whatever.”
It was a bit of a walk, but well worth it once they entered the small club and he saw the look on Drizzt’s face, all excitement and wonder. Jas gazed around the rather narrow main dance hall with a bit of a jaded eye, as he came here frequently to get away from the chaos at his house and let the loud music wash his mind clean. Jas was secretly glad Drizzt had never been to a club, as this one was rather decrepit and cramped compared to the lush and sprawling clubs to be found closer to Qu'Ellarz'Orl. Jas could have never afforded to set foot it one of those places, noble or not, but Drizzt, with his family’s status in the city, should be used to such lavish entertainment. But the seedy little hall was impressive enough to someone whose had never had a chance to explore further than the Academy. The club did have the promised lights and music, loud to drow ears, though not quite loud enough to make conversation impossible. The club was too low class to have a live band and depended upon a clumsy looking magical device that basically played the same song in a repetitive loop, modifying the melody ever so slightly to give the appearance of being more. But it had a good beat and most of the patrons would be too occupied with other things to notice. Since most of these patrons were currently utilizing the private rooms available behind the main hall, the room was fairly empty, a few people gathered here and there against the back wall or out on the dance floor dancing as well as their current state of sobriety would allow.
“So now what do we do?” asked Drizzt, eyes wide and sparkling with fascination as he took in the hall. “Are we supposed to do something?”
“Well, actually, yes, we have to buy a drink; you can’t stand in here for free, “ Jas said teasingly. He still hadn’t quite got over the fact that all this was so new to the younger drow. Sure, technically you weren’t supposed to be in a place like this until you were old enough, but who hadn’t snuck into at least one before coming of age? Or at least heard a story or two, enough to know what to do in such a place.
“But,” Jas said, “you’ll have to do it; I come here often enough someone at the dispensary might recognize me, and that could be a bit awkward.” He concealed a grin behind two fingers as Drizzt looked at him uncertainly.
“What do I get?”
“They only have one thing, so there’s not much of a choice, although you can pick the color. Just go to that door there with the screen. I’ll see if any of the tables are clean enough to sit at.”
Still uncertain, but intrigued by what Jas could possibly mean by picking a color, Drizzt wove his way around the irregular shaped dance floor. After a few moments he realized it was shaped like a spider. Figures, he thought, just can’t get away from it anywhere.
All the corner tables were predictably already taken, so Jas picked the cleanest of the tables near the entrance and furthest away from the screen so he could keep an eye on both. It also gave him an excellent view of Drizzt. The younger drow’s nervousness was making him take smaller, quicker steps than normal, which only lent more of an air feminity to his appearance. Jas sat backed and watched his personal show, also enjoying the fact that by sending Drizzt up to the screen he also avoided having to pay for what passed for a drink in this place. The food carts had been bad enough.
Soon enough the younger drow returned with the drinks, one glowing a soft purple and the other a brilliant red. Jas’s smile grew wider as Drizzt placed the latter in front of Jas and sat down with the other.
Drizzt caught his gaze, and blushed slightly, cheeks warming slightly. Jas was looking at him in that way again, pretty much had been all night any time the younger drow had caught his eye. He took an experimental sip of his drink. He promptly forgot Jas though when the rather strongly spiced taste almost made him gag. After he swallowed it didn’t get any better as the spicy taste was just disguising the cheapness of the mushroom wine, whose rank aftertaste lingered.
“Yuck, this is hideous.” he stated, putting the drink back down.
“Yeah, they don’t really expect any one to really drink it unless they were drunk when they walked in, “ Jas joked, “I just come for the music and to be left alone.”
They sat for a while, Drizzt curiously taking in the scene around him, while Jas eyeballed his drink disdainfully and wondered if it was worth trying to choke some of it down. He usually did just out of spite for having to pay for the thing to begin with, but this time it was technically free so the usual motivation was not there. Plus, it always gave him one of those wiggly worm thought feelings, as the taste always reminded him of something he couldn’t quite wrap his mind around. Something about the number forty-four, but that didn’t make sense, did it? He shook his head to clear it, as even thinking about the silly drink had distracted him, giving Drizzt a sheepish grin as he noticed that the younger drow had tired of looking around the room and was giving him the curious look now.
Drizzt saved Jas from having to explain by asking, “So is this it? I mean, are we supposed to do anything else?”
Jas laughed. Ok, so it wasn’t the most exciting place in the world, but at least people for the most part left you alone. “Well, we could dance,” he said pointing vaguely in the direction of the dance floor.
Drizzt gave him a look between shock and intrigue. “I don’t know how and… and we’re dressed like girls!”
“Hmm, I don’t think the latter is going to make much of a difference, “ Jas replied smoothly, although his eyes were sparkling with suppressed laughter, “seeing as there are already girls out there.” He gestured towards the only group of dancers on the floor; all three were female, although it appeared that they were more stumbling and swaying rather than dancing. “And I seriously doubt the former will be either. Anyways, didn’t you have to learn that when you were younger? You are a noble, I thought it was kind of mandatory.”
Drizzt mumbled something Jas couldn’t really hear, something about being forgotten about, and then in a louder, challenging tone, “Did you?”
Jas conceded, “Well, no, anything like would have cost money. But I watched Tengen take his classes. His mother always made him train in anything she thought even hinted of noble class, not that it helped. But its easy enough , you’ll have no problems, now come on!”
He pulled Drizzt up, and the younger drow followed willingly enough to the floor, intrigue winning out over any initial surprise he had had at the suggestion.
