Cadence Fairchild looked at her granddaughter with pride as the young woman schooled all her classmates during the fighting portion of her classes. Clarissa moved fast and smoothly, she had fun but was serious about everything that she was doing and when she had to be corrected she would listen and do it perfectly the next time. Cadence was proud of the woman she was, apparently Jocelyn had done something right. She walked forward and watched the instructor lead them in their hand-to-hand combat before calling out a ‘good job’ to them all and dismissing the class. Clary smiled at her friends and headed in to the shower room, Cadence waited for a full fifteen minutes before she became suspicious of the fact that her granddaughter hadn’t come back out when all her friends already had. She walked to the door and looked around before entering the steamy room and looking around in there.
The room was empty and she thought that possibly she had missed her when she noted an open window. She cursed and walked through the room quickly she walked out the door and ran around the building looking around. She saw red hair flash around the corner and followed it but as she turned the corner she found herself slammed against the side of the brick building. Her breath came out with a whooshing sound as she found herself staring in to the eyes of her daughter and apparently her granddaughter as well.
“Who are you and what do you want?!” Clary asked her eyes locked on the woman’s stare.
“My name is Cadence Fairchild” She answered “I’m your grandmother”
“My…grandmother?” She repeated lowering her still raised fist and looked at the woman. Similar red hair, pale green eyes and pale skin, they looked enough alike and it wasn’t like their hair was common.
“I’m curious” Cadence said “How did you know about me?”
“I saw you watching us through the glass” Clary answered, her eyes were still watching the woman closely but she no longer looked like she was about to attack “I saw you watching me go in to the shower room so I realized you were watching me so I sent my friends out and watched them until I knew they were safe and then I climbed out the window and waited”
“You wanted me to follow you” Cadence guessed “But why?”
“Then I could fight you” Clary said “One on one”
“Very good” Cadence said with a smile “An amazing shadow-hunter…like your mother. I was very nervous to meet you Clarissa but I’m glad I came here today”
“Clary” She corrected “Everyone calls me Clary not Clarissa”
“Alright” She smiled and together they headed out for the stone bench that sat under a newly blossoming tree. It was spring now and while not exactly warm in the sun it was comfortable and the air was fragrant “This school is just as beautiful as it was when your mother was here”
“I’d rather not talk about my mother” Clary said, it still stung that the older woman hadn’t written to her and tried to contact her in anyway.
“She hasn’t spoken to you yet?” Cadence asked in confusion “Well it’s been about three months since she visited me and made the revelation that she was keeping trying to keep you and your downworlder apart because that was what Valentine did to her”
“She hasn’t spoken to me about it” Clary said with a small shake of her head “To be perfectly honest with you…err…what do I call you?”
“Grandmother” Cadence answered “Or Granny, Cade works as well”
“Okay” Clary thought for a moment “Granny-Cade, I know nothing about you. Never been told anything about you and in all honesty, I just assumed you were dead”
“I didn’t approve of Valentine” Cadence said “I thought he was a power-hungry naïve and mean little boy”
“Then I wish she had listened to you” Clary said “We wouldn’t have had to spend so much times fighting the bastard”
“If she hadn’t been with him” Cadence said “Then you wouldn’t be here. Be happy with what you have now and not what could have been done differently”
“Why did mom leave you behind and never think to tell me about you” Clary asked angrily.
“Don’t be mad Clarissa” Cadence said softly “I wasn’t mother of the year, not even close. I hated the Garraway family, I hated that they weren’t of the same political standing as we were, that they weren’t as wealthy…I hated that Mrs. Garraway decided to have her son and then continue being an active in-field shadow-hunter…”
“You stopped shadow-hunting when you had mom?” Clary asked.
“I chose to work from home” She answered “Taking care of some of the more mundane Clave “desk job” type of work” She smiled “You see, I hated Lucian…I mean Luke, not because of what he turned in to or even because of his family…I didn’t want her to have the bond, I know how it can hurt”
“So, you kept them apart as well as Valentine?” Clary asked.
“No” She answered “I let them be friends because I knew that a bond was important and that it was a powerful thing. When she met Valentine and decided to date him I realized that she didn’t know anything about bonds and I tried to explain it to her but then one day she came home and told me she had gotten married and she was leaving home” Cadence looked down at her hands “That was the last time I saw my daughter until three months ago. I had heard about the birth of your brother and I heard about her fleeing and hiding away and how could I not hear about the fight with Valentine, everyone knew about that”
“I’m not trying to be mean but” Clary broke off and looked around for an easier way to explain but finally looked back at her grandmother “Why do you want to get to know me now?”
“I just learned about you” She said “Three months ago, that’s true and I would have gotten in touch with you sooner but…well…I had to convince myself that I had a right to know you”
“What convinced you?” Clary asked.
“Your bond to Magnus Bane” She answered her “You are the third woman in my line to have a bond with someone”
“Third?” She repeated “My mother, me…and…you?”
“He was part of the Fairfolk” Cadence answered “And so handsome, smart and caring…I know now how powerful a bond is and can be”
“Was?” Clary repeated the word and at the same time a shiver went down her spine and she immediately felt Magnus’s presence in her brain. She opened up the connection to him so he could witness what was going on “Is he…?”
“Yes” Cadence answered, tears filling her eyes as the memories of her and Leo played out before her eyes once again “We knew about the bond. My mother told me that it wasn’t that important and that I needed to marry a shadow-hunter to keep our pure angelic bloodline going, so I did”
“My grandfather, mom’s dad” Clary filled in.
“Yes” She said again “I told Leo that I would never see him again. That I did not love him and I could never be with a downworlder....”
“What happened to him” Clary asked.
“He left me alone and tried to stay close” Cadence answered “But I told him to leave me alone and finally, he did. I blocked him from my mind as much as from my life and he ended up killing himself from loneliness. You see to a shadow-hunter when you get blocked or block someone its sad and lonely but to a downworlder, especially one that’s relatively immortal like my Leo, it’s hell and it’s the worse pain they will and have ever felt”
“I’m sorry” Clary sobbed looking down to hide her emotions “I’m sorry…oh I feel like I’m going to be sick”
“That’s your bond reacting to my ruined one” Cadence answered as she rubbed her granddaughters back soothingly “It was my own fault though, I know that”
“But…” Clary tried to reason that she hadn’t what would happen but the beautiful, older woman interrupted her.
“You are too kind, Clarissa” Cadence said “I may not have known what would have happened but that doesn’t excuse me from the guilt that I should have known that something terrible would have happened”
“I’m sorry” Clary said “I really am…I don’t know what else to say”
“There is nothing else to say” She said “Have you learned about Magnus’s past?”
“No” Clary answered “Should I?”
“You should always know the most about the people close to you” Cadence answered “I spent the first month after your mother told me about you looking in to his past to make sure that you are safe…”
“If I am bound to him” Clary said “Then surely I am safe with him”
“With him, yes” Her grandmother said “But if by some chance he was the type of warlock that did a lot of sketchy dealings with demons then that could cause some demons to attack you if he double-crossed them and it would cause the Clave to keep an eye on you as well as him”
“But he’s not…” Clary started.
“I know” She answered “I did research on him and short of learning that you truly are the only bright spot in his entire life there’s nothing too sketchy about him” She frowned “His life, Clarissa, has been littered with sadness, heartache, fear, prejudice and self-loathing. I think that’s why he makes it such a point to help people and only ask “little” from them…it’s his way of apologizing to the world for being born a warlock”
“That’s horrible” Clary whispered, her heart was crying out for him all the while he was mentally bad-mouthing the other woman for sticking her nose where it didn’t belong.
“It is” Cadence agreed with a small nod “But now that you know a little of what he’s been used to his entire life then you know how you should treat him, how patient you’ll need to be and how to love him correctly”
“Why does it matter to you?” Clary asked almost meanly.
“You’re my granddaughter” She told her “And because of Valentine’s brainwashing Jocelyn, I missed out on a huge portion of your life. We should have talked about boys, thought out children’s names, played with dolls, outside in the sun and had a normal relationship but because your mother was convinced that I hated her she robbed me of ever having that” Clary nodded “Now your mother isn’t giving you the sort of support in your bond that you should have, well, that I can work with and I intend to help you whenever you need it”
“Thank you, I think” Clary said.
