Bella was gently shaken awake when they reached the airport. She had no idea what time it was, nor did she care. Mostly she was angry with herself because she was finally with Edward again, and she’d wasted precious time sleeping.
She was finally warm now, and when she sat up she realized it was because they had piled coats on her and cranked up the heat in the car. Carlisle reached back and brushed her cheek with the back of his hand. “Good, you’re no longer hypothermic. You had me worried for a minute there.”
“Are we going home already?” Bella asked sleepily.
Carlisle nodded as he got out of the car. “I think it’s a good idea to get back to the States as soon as possible. I don’t want to take any chances.”
They grabbed their bags and approached the front desk. “When’s the next available flight you have to New York?” Liam asked the young lady.
She frowned. “If you had gotten here sooner you could have caught the one leaving in twenty minutes. It’s the last one until morning.”
Liam leaned forward a little with sad eyes. “Could you please put us on that one? We really need to get home.” He reached out and put his hand on top of hers. “We’re here on vacation, but our dad just called us and told us our grandmother has suffered a stroke. It looks bad; the doctors don’t think she’ll last much longer, and we were hoping to make it back in time to say goodbye. Tomorrow morning might be too late.”
The woman’s lower lip trembled a little. “Let me see what I can do for you.” They waited while she typed away on her computer. “I can get you on the flight, but you’ll have to run to make it.”
“Thank you so much,” Liam said with a sad smile. He handed over a credit card and paid for the tickets.
Carlisle and Edward each grabbed one of Bella’s hands and dragged her along. She was still half asleep and struggled to keep up. Edward ended up carrying her, and they only barely made it to the gate before the plane left.
“Go back to sleep,” Edward urged Bella after they took their seats.
“No,” Bella protested. “I don’t want to sleep.” She wanted to be conscious the entire time Edward was with her because she was afraid he’d leave again as soon as she was safe at home.
“Uncle Liam, do your thing,” Edward requested.
“No!” Bella shouted a little louder. “No evil tricks.”
Liam reached behind him to grab her hand. She was so tired she couldn’t fight back. Seconds later images of sunlight streaming through a forest canopy swirled through her mind, and a feeling of serenity overtook her. As much as she tried to fight it, she was out cold almost instantly.
Carlisle took out his phone as soon as they were in the air. His first call was to Charlie Swan. “Hello, Chief Swan, it’s Dr. Cullen. I apologize for calling so late, but I thought you’d like to know that I’ve caught the runaways, and I’m bringing Bella home. I’m really sorry for all the trouble. They usually aren’t like this. Don’t worry about it, it’s taken care of. She’s sleeping now. It’s been a long day for all of us. I’ll have her call you when we get to New York. I wouldn’t be too hard on her; I’ve screamed at them enough for both of us, I think.” He listened for a moment. “No problem. Goodnight.”
He hung up the phone with a sigh. “That poor man.” His next call was to Esme to let her know they were all okay. They made arrangements to meet in Washington. The family obviously had much to discuss.
They landed in New York and bought seats on the next flight to Sea-Tac airport. They had a few hours this time, so Edward decided to take Bella to get something to eat. Before they left, Carlisle handed her his phone. “Call your father. I spoke to him last night so he knows you’re safe, but he’s still worried.”
Bella reluctantly took the phone and followed Edward to an airport café. She ordered a sandwich and dialed the number, not looking forward to facing Charlie. “Hi, Dad, it’s me. I’m really sorry, I just—I know. No, don’t blame Liam and Alice. I begged them to take me. Please don’t be mad at Edward, either. He wanted to talk, and I couldn’t say no. Yeah, I should be home late this afternoon. I love you, too. Bye.”
She didn’t have much of an appetite after talking to Charlie, but Edward wasn’t taking no for an answer. Bella hadn’t eaten in nearly two days, and he didn’t want her getting sick.
She’d told Charlie that Edward had wanted to talk; they did need to talk, but they hadn’t done so yet. It seemed like neither of them wanted to ruin the moment, the pleasure of being together again after so long. They just wanted to enjoy each other’s company.
After she’d eaten enough to satisfy Edward they returned to the waiting lounge. Bella gave Carlisle his phone back. “Charlie told me to tell you thanks again for chasing after me.”
Carlisle gave her a soft smile. “And I want to thank you for travelling halfway around the world to help us. Don’t worry, he won’t be mad for long. You just had him worried.”
Liam nodded in agreement. “Take it from me, he’ll be mad until you get home.” He turned to Carlisle. “What’s the longest you’ve ever stayed mad at me?”
Carlisle thought about it for a minute. “I think I lasted a good twenty minutes once.”
They boarded the plane and were home in a few hours. Esme and Jasper were waiting for them in the terminal, and Rosalie and Emmett were out in the car. Liam started to charge toward Rosalie, but Carlisle held him back. “Don’t.”
“But you said—”
Rosalie flinched. Even though she couldn’t read minds, she apparently had some idea of what her uncle wanted to do to her. She apologized profusely to the entire family, but it appeared that only Bella was in a forgiving mood. She seemed to want Rosalie to like her enough that she was willing to overlook everything they’d just been through.
The sun was beginning to set when they arrived in Forks. Charlie was out the door as soon as the car came to a stop. “Bella, thank god!”
Bella didn’t realize just how much she missed her father until she was flinging herself into his arms. Charlie glared daggers at Edward. “You have some nerve,” he growled.
“Chief Swan, I am so sorry for everything,” Edward apologized. “I know I don’t deserve it, but can I please just escort Bella inside?” He took Charlie’s silence for permission and walked Bella inside the house.
“So, what exactly happened?” Charlie asked the others.
All eyes turned to Liam. “All I really remember is Edward calling me and talking all crazy. Then he demanded to talk to Bella. There was an argument, and she hung up on him. Then she told us she needed to get to Rome, and if we didn’t take her she’d go by herself and there was nothing we could do to stop her. We didn’t want to let her go on her own because, knowing her, she’d get lost or kidnapped or something.”
Charlie nodded, seemingly accepting the vague account of events. “Thanks again for bringing her home,” he mumbled before heading back into the house.
As soon as Charlie was out of earshot Carlisle raised an eyebrow. “The master couldn’t come up with a better explanation than that? How disappointing.”
“Yes, well, I was bound to run out of good ideas sooner or later.” Liam leaned against the car and gazed blankly at the surrounding woods.
“So—he’s back, is he?” Carlisle asked.
“How did you know?”
Carlisle laughed. “Brother dear, it’s been over three hundred years. I can see it in your eyes. But it could get messy this time.”
“Everything involving me usually ends up messy in one way or another,” Liam mused. “Why should this be any different?”
“Just be careful. Something feels…different this time.”
Liam nodded. “Yes, it does. It feels like the end of something.”
They were interrupted by Edward coming back out. “I’ve been officially banned from the house,” he announced.
“But that isn’t going to stop you, is it?” Liam grinned as he got back into the car.
“He said he didn’t want to see me come through his door again. He didn’t say anything about the window,” Edward said with a little grin.
“I think I’m starting to rub off on you,” Liam laughed.
Jacob hadn’t eaten or slept much in the past three days. He kept telling himself he was worried about Bella, but every time he closed his eyes his dreams were plagued by a blue-eyed blond man. The first night he had images of racing with him through the woods in the middle of the night on horseback. A pack of wolves ran beside them just inside the tree line. Jacob was afraid, but Liam seemed at ease with their presence.
The next night they were in what looked like a medieval castle, and Liam was leaving but promising to return. Days passed in the blink of an eye, and someone Jacob didn’t recognize announced that Brother White Wolf had fallen. Jacob felt as if his entire chest would cave in on itself, and he woke screaming again.
His dad and the others believed he was just worried about Bella, and he let them continue to believe it. He was afraid they’d disown him if they ever knew the truth with which Jacob was starting to come to terms. As a child he’d heard stories of souls living more than one life, but he’d never really believed them. Of course he didn’t used to believe his people could become wolves either….
But the more he thought about it, the more likely it seemed that these strange dreams were memories, and that at some point he’d been head over heels in love with Liam Cullen. He didn’t see why it mattered now though. Liam was a vampire and Jacob’s mortal enemy. Two enemies falling into each other’s arms and overcoming all obstacles was something that only happened in fairy tales and Shakespearen plays.
A ringing phone brought him out of his morose thoughts. Charlie was calling Billy to let him know that Bella was home safe. Jacob breathed a sigh of relief. He did care about his best friend, and he had been worried about her.
He debated whether or not to call her in the morning. He didn’t want to lose her as a friend, but if she was going to be hanging around vampires again there wasn’t much else he could do. He didn’t want to risk seeing Liam again, either. No matter how much he kept telling himself there was no chance of a reunion, something deep inside him refused to accept that. Would the ache ever go away, or was he going to have to spend the rest of his life with a gaping hole in the pit of his soul?
