The months continued aboard the Jolly Roger as Hook sailed his ship around Neverland. In a way, Peter and Wendy fell into somewhat of a routine. Hook seemed to be keeping Peter around to satisfy his carnal urges and as long as he didn’t go after Wendy, Peter obliged silently. They were given a bit more freedom as they were allowed to walk around the decks a bit (but Peter learned quickly this was a bad idea, as the second morning of their newfound freedom, a pirate launched himself at Wendy and Peter was given a beating for attacking the pirate) and Mr. Smee had even given them new clothes. Wendy longed for news from her brothers—had they even returned to London? She missed her family but was happy to be with her love. Hook would often come into the cabin and demand to be pleasured and afterwards, would leave them alone. They had the evening to themselves and sometimes the two youths would melt into each other’s arms as they flew through the heavens, as Peter had put it. Most of the time, though, they just lay in each other’s arms and talked. Peter told her more adventures he had in Neverland…Wendy told him stories from her childhood. They fell more in love and despite the fact they were still prisoners, in a way they were happy. Peter was fascinated to see Wendy’s body changing; her breasts were rounder and fuller (which he had to admit, he liked) and her belly was growing larger. She developed a kind of glow about her, which Peter repeatedly told her made her look like an angel. She wished she could keep track of the days…she would have liked to know when she was due to have the child. Peter tried asking Hook if they could take her to a doctor but his question earned him the hook digging into his shoulder blade. Hook took to calling Peter into his cabin and when Peter returned to Wendy, she would clean him up and hold him in her arms. He had no idea why Hook had changed his behavior…he wondered if it had something to do with Wendy’s pregnancy. Did Hook believe the child might be his or was he sure it belonged to Peter? Peter and Wendy both grew more anxious as Wendy got bigger. He hoped and prayed everyday it would be his and it would be obvious that it was his. Wendy prayed the child would not be Hook’s. She didn’t know what she would do if it resembled him in anyway. She woke up one night, screaming, from a silly nightmare about the baby being born with a hook instead of a hand. Peter tried to keep from smiling as she told him about the dream and he soothed her hair and kissed her softly. One morning as they were laying in bed together, Wendy gasped softly and sat up. Peter’s eyes widened and he jumped up, looking around. “What? What is it?” “Oh Peter, I can feel the heartbeat.” Peter frowned, still looking around. “Huh?” “The baby! Here,” she grabbed his hand and put it on her stomach. His eyes grew wider as he felt a little thump-thump where the little baby’s heart was beating. A broad grin crossed his face and leaned up to kiss her. “We should come up with some names,” she said, leaning back against the bed. “But we don’t know if it’s a boy or girl yet,” Peter said, leaning down to kiss her belly. She smiled. “We can come up with some of both. I would like Mary…after my mother of course.” Peter didn’t care for the name but didn’t say anything. “How about Melina? She’s a mermaid, a good friend of mine.” “Hmm,” Wendy pursed her lips and didn’t look to enthusiastic about the name. Or maybe because it was the name of a mermaid who had been a friend of Peter’s. Either way, she didn’t say anything. “James was my father’s name,” Peter said after a moment. Wendy looked quickly at him, her mouth opened in surprise. “Peter, I’ve never heard you speak about your parents before.” He shrugged. “I don’t remember much. I just remembered his name. I don’t know what my mother’s name was.” They fell silent, Wendy still shocked at hearing him speak of his family. There was a knock at the door and Mr. Smee poked his head in with a little smile. “Good Morning to you both! Peter, the Cap’n would like a word.” Sighing, Peter started to take his shirt off, knowing what a ‘word’ meant to Hook but Smee cleared his throat. “Not that kind of word…ahem, he just needs to speak to you for a moment.” Puzzled, Peter followed Smee into Hook’s cabin and swept into a little bow, as he had started to do to please Hook. Hook bowed back and stuck a cigar into his mouth. “How fares Wendy this morning?” “She’s doing well, sir, thank you for asking.” “And the baby?” “It grows,” was all Peter said. Hook nodded, lighting his cigar and sucking on it a moment before he spoke again. “You asked me if we could take her to a surgeon on our next trip. You’ll be pleased to know we are docking in Medway in Kent. I give you permission to accompany her to a doctor but Mr. Smee will also be accompanying you to ensure you do not get lost.” “Thank you sir! Thank you very much.” When Hook didn’t say anything else, Peter backed out of the cabin and rushed back to his and Wendy’s quarters. “Is everything alright?” she asked when he reentered. “We’re coming to port soon and we are taking you to a doctor.” “A doctor? Why?” “Wendy, we just need to make sure everything is ok with her…or him,” he smiled and rested his hand on her stomach. She covered his hand with hers and sighed. “Her.” “Nah, I think it’s a boy.” Wendy shook her head, smiling. “Think what you will. We shall see soon enough. Why did Hook change his mind?” Peter shrugged, laying down next to her and resting his head on her breast. “Things have been strange these past few months. We’re actually…cordial. When he’s not…er, you know…he’s cordial and more of a gentleman to me. I don’t get it. I really don’t. It’s like sometimes we’re guests on this ship and not prisoners.” “I suppose we should be grateful he’s not trying to kill you,” Wendy said with a sigh. “I’ll take the gentleman Hook rather than a vengeful Hook any day. But I don’t trust him. He can turn on us in a moment’s notice. We can be polite to him like we have been but I haven’t slept with both eyes closed in weeks, Peter. I just know he’s going to do something. I don’t know what yet but I feel-“ she broke off, tears starting to form in her eyes, took a deep breath and continued, “I feel like he’s going to do something when the baby comes. I know it’s mad but I just have this feeling that he will try to—“ Peter’s finger covered her lips and he shook his head. “Just stop. He will never touch our child. I won’t let him. He hasn’t touched you in months and he won’t touch the baby. Wendy, you must have faith.” “And trust?” Wendy said with a smile, playing along. Peter grinned and closed his eyes as if he was going back in time. “I hope Tink and the others are ok,” he sighed, laying his head back on her belly. “I wish I could have news from my brothers. I wonder if they are even still in Neverland.” Peter looked up at her and pushed back a strand of her hair. “We have each other, that’s all we can hope for right now. Maybe a plan of escape before the baby comes, if we are lucky. But I don’t really know if it’s worth the risk.” He fell silent, biting his lip. He feared if they tried to escape, Hook would punish them in the cruelest way possible. And Peter knew by the way Wendy’s body had changed that the time was getting close. She was not able to move around much now and she was so big, she complained about not seeing her feet. Peter was terrified of what would happen when the baby did come. He certainly knew nothing about delivering a child. He knew no one on the ship knew how to either. What would they do when Wendy went into labor and no one was there to help her? He shuddered at the thought and just decided he had to have faith. He lay his head back down and closed his eyes. The next thing he knew, he heard a pirate yelling ‘land ho’ and there was a knock at the door. “We’ve arrived, Miss. I’d like to escort you both to the hospital of Kent.” Peter helped Wendy up and held her hand as they slowly followed Smee out of the cabin. The pirates catcalled Wendy as she passed and Peter’s fists clenched but he remained silent. He looked up and saw Hook watching them with narrowed eyes. A protective arm went around his love as he helped her along the streets of Kent. Peter tapped his foot impatiently, sprawled out in his chair and constantly looking at the door. They had been waiting for nearly two hours; Wendy had been taken to a back room to be examined and Peter and Smee had to wait outside. Smee noticed how anxious the boy was and smiled. “Relax, lad. She’ll be fine.” “I just don’t like not knowing,” he said, crossing his arms across his chest and pouting. Smee chuckled and shook his head. Peter frowned. “What’s so funny?” “The months have changed you Peter Pan but at times I still see that smug little boy inside you. No doubt you’ve grown but I think a part of Peter Pan will never grow up, no matter what happens.” Peter pondered this. “I hope not. I don’t want to lose myself entirely. I’ve agreed to grow up with Wendy but I still want to be a little boy sometimes.” “And I think you’ve found the perfect person to spend your life with. Because only Miss Wendy will understand that about you.” Peter fell silent and pondered his words. The door finally opened and Peter jumped up as the nurse entered the room. “How is she,” he asked immediately. “Are you the father?” He nodded. “You’re both very young,” the nurse said dubiously. Her glance moved to Smee. “And you are…?” “The boy’s father. Tell us nurse, how is she?” “She’s fine and everything looks normal. But I’m afraid we can’t allow her to leave.” “What? Why not?” Peter started to panic and the nurse, sensing this, laid a gentle hand on his arm. “Not to be alarmed, lad, it’s just that it will happen any day now. She has said she has not seen a doctor before now and that worries me. I don’t know where you live but she should stay here so we can keep an eye on her…and so we can help her when the time comes. I daresay neither of you know a thing about childbirth, do you?” Smee and Peter both shook their heads. “Well then, she’s safest with us. It can happen at any moment and with her being so young…well, we just want her to be safe as possible. You understand of course?” “Of course,” Peter said in a quiet voice. Smee was looking quite worried but Peter was relieved. Wendy’s delivery would be much easier with women who knew what they were doing. She undoubtedly would feel much more relieved, being around the midwives. “May I see her?” “Of course. We’ve put her up in the back room on the right, number 4.” She stood aside to allow Peter to walk the hallway and he smiled when he saw Wendy propped up in the bed, looking so beautiful in a blue nightgown and staring out the window. “Why Miss Darling, you look radiant,” he said in a deep voice. She giggled and held out her hand for him to join her on the bed. “I suppose the nurse came to talk to you?” “I’m so relieved Wendy. I want you safe as can be and delivering the baby here will be so much better than on the ship.” “But Hook-“ “I don’t care what Hook says. It’s for the baby. Everything will be fine now, you’re in good hands.” He kissed her and softly stroked her belly. There was a timid knock at the door and Smee was standing there, nervously wringing his hands. “We should be getting back now, Miss.” “But you heard the nurse—“ “I know Peter but the Cap’n hasn’t given his permission to stay. Let us return and explain what they said and I’m sure he will let you return here for the remainder of your term. But if we stay here without telling him what is going on…” he trailed off and swallowed. Wendy struggled to get out of the bed and held out a hand for Peter to help her but he shook his head. “We’re not going anywhere. You heard her. The baby can be born any minute. Let Wendy stay here and I’ll return to the Jolly Roger and tell Hook.” “I’m af-fraid not, lad, the Cap’n is a controlling man…but fair—“ “Fair?!” Peter raised his voice and Smee flinched.
“Peter,” Wendy said gently, closing her fingers around his wrist. “Let’s not make trouble. I’ll return to the ship and hopefully come back here tonight. I’ll just tell the nurse I have to run home for some medicines.” Smee looked relieved but Peter was red in the face. If Wendy went into labor before they returned to the hospital, he would find a way to slit Hook’s throat with his own hook.
