It was after noon the following day when I reached the first town after my escape, which had given me plenty of time to sort through the few memories I had recovered. The identity of my father had been revealed to me, which was how I knew I was half elf. My mother's identity was still a mystery to me, though. I also knew what had made me lose my memory in the first place. The elf queen, Islanzadi, put me into an enchanted sleep and cast a spell to make me forget by building walls in my mind. It was effective at the time, but Galbatorix proved that the walls could be brought down. What little I had regained I wished was still locked away. I remembered Vroengard. Training with the Dragon Riders, helping some of them learn magic. It had come effortlessly to me, something that had astounded even the most powerful of Riders. I remembered Galbatorix. He had been so charismatic and charming at the time, and everyone had liked him, including me. He loved me, and I had thought I loved him. The last thing I remembered was the sting of betrayal and heartbreak before Islanzadi put me to sleep, with the agreement that she would wake me up when Galbatorix was gone. She fell a little short of the mark.
I tried not to dwell on the memories too much. They made me queasy. I pressed a hand to my stomach, feeling sick. Reaching into my saddlebag, I grabbed an apple. I chewed it slowly, hoping to calm my stomach.
When I got to the town, I put the hood of my cloak up. I hoped no one would recognize me. I didn't think word had spread this far yet, and since I had left in the middle of the night I assumed I had several hours lead on any soldiers dispatched to try to bring me back. I had to stop someone to ask where I could buy supplies at. The villagers directed me to a shop where I traded one of the necklaces I had brought with me for supplies I would need on my journey. The kind old woman running the shop was very helpful, suggesting things I knew I wouldn't have thought of on my own. She seemed to sense I was in a hurry, so she put several items in a bag for me, smiling all the while. When she had the bag full, she came around the counter.
"I put lots of extra water skeins in for you," she said, eyes twinkling. She leaned in very close. "The Hadarac Desert is a treacherous place, but if you meet the right company, you should make it just fine."
I leaned in closer to her, puzzled. "I have no idea what you are talking about. I'm heading south." She just smiled at me and took the proffered necklace, handing me the stuffed bag. Suddenly the door behind the counter crashed open. I started and turned to face the disturbance. A man stood in the doorway with a dark expression on his face. When he saw me standing there his face changed to curiosity, then to politely professional.
"Hello, miss. May I help you?"
"Oh, um, thank you but..." I trailed off, looking around. The old woman was gone! I looked back at the man behind the counter; he was gazing at me expectantly. "There was a woman here. She gave me this, and I was going to trade it for this necklace." I held up the items, still confused.
"Was she here again? I've had several customers tell me the same thing, and that she said something odd, almost prophetic, and later they come back and tell me what the woman said came true! I've never seen her myself, though." He peered past my shoulder, trying to catch a glimpse of the mysterious woman. He shrugged and looked back at me. "Well, if she gave you supplies, then you must be all set. She always seems to know best. You said you have something to trade?"
"Oh, right." I passed him the necklace. He took it gently and stared at it. My heart started to race.
"This is the most spectacular craftmanship I've ever seen," he breathed reverently. He looked at me. "This necklace is worth more than my whole shop. Are you sure you want to trade it?"
"Um, well, I just... I need supplies," I muttered, uncomfortable. "Maybe you can sell it. I really don't need it."
The shopkeeper gawked at me for another moment before placing the necklace gently on a shelf. "Alright, I will take it as payment. But if you ever come back through again, you need not pay for anything else."
"That's really not necessary."
The man help up his hand. "I insist." I stood there awkwardly for a moment.
"Okay, thank you. I will accept that offer." Our business concluded, I turned for the door. Outside, I tied the bag to Minna's saddle and mounted, arranging my skirt around my legs as best I could. No one spared more than a glance in my direction. I put heels to Minna's sides and set off again. Once at the edge of the village, I put my hand into the bag to investigate what I had been given. The first thing I pulled out was a map of the empire. I unfolded it to plot my course; I had every intention of going south, to Surda. The map apparently had different ideas. There was a path already marked on the map. Leading through the Hadarac Desert and into the Beor Mountains. The last confused me. Everyone knew there was nothing there. I shrugged and folded the map back up tucking it into my saddlebag for easy access later. Putting my hand back in the bag, I pulled out a bundle of food. I smiled and transferred it into the saddlebag as well. I pulled out a hairbrush, hair ties, a small sewing kit, and several other odds and ends that I never would have thought to get. I reached into the bag for the last time and pulled out the smallest bundle yet. Balancing it in my lap, I untied the cloth. The smile I'd had faded, and I pulled on the reins bringing Minna to a stop. The bundle held soft rags and tiny sponges that women used when they got their monthly bleeding. I felt my heart beat faster and my breath caught in my chest. I counted the days and counted again. Tears streamed down my face. I tied the bundle back up and threw it as hard as I could away from me before spurring Minna on again. I wouldn't be needing them any time soon. Galbatorix had gotten me with child.

A/N: Okay, I think I've mostly circled back to where I was heading, for the most part. I had to change the timeline around a bit to fit the new direction. The story and plot are staying the same but the timing is shifting a little.
SPOILER: Unfortunately, because of the timing change, I will need to change a few details from the original books. Mostly minor details so far. I wasn't really planning on going entirely with the storyline from the books anyway, but I've really gone off on a tangent this time. Thanks for reading!
