“You were joking about that whole end of the world stuff back there, right?” Jason asked nervously as they were getting back into the car.
“Oh man, not another apocalypse,” Spike groaned from the front seat where he was now sitting, having moved to better fiddle with the knobs on the radio and, of course, to put a little more distance between Willow and Jason. “I got burned to a crisp at the last one!”
“I never joke about the end of the world,” she replied, trying to ignore the snort that came out of Spike. “Okay, I don’t joke about it much, but you would joke too if you had dealt with as many of these things as I have,” she added defensively. “But I’m not joking about it now. What I felt before, the Mother of All Darkness, or whatever you want to call her, she is coming like some sort of cosmic tidal wave of death. Trust me, I know about these things.”
“That’s right; our Red here almost destroyed the world herself once. It was enough to do any demon proud. Of course, I didn’t find out about it until after I got my soul back, and then I was too addlepated to realize, but still, mighty powerful my girl is,” he finished with a proud grin.
Willow wished Spike wouldn’t try to help on this one. She didn’t bother correcting the ‘my girl’ bit, with Spike it was best to pick your battles wisely and at the moment, that one was not so important. What was important was the shocked and very pale face Jason had turned on her, his hand paused halfway to putting the key in the ignition.
“You almost destroyed the world?” he asked, his throat suddenly gone very dry as he remembered that he really didn’t know this girl at all and realized just how powerful that would make her.
“Yes,” she answered softly, bowing her head in shame, “Someone I loved very much had been killed, and it made me lose control. It’s something I’ll have to live with for the rest of my life.” She looked back up at him then, hoping her regret was apparent, and saw that while he was no less horrified at the revelation, he seemed to understand her reasoning a bit, or at least believed that she was sincerely sorry.
“So, I guess at the last minute you realized it was wrong and stopped yourself?” he asked hopefully.
“Actually, no. Xander is the one who stopped me. He told me that if I was going to end the world there was nowhere he would rather be than with me when it ended. I can’t explain it, but somehow, just by loving me, he gave me my humanity back and saved us all.”
“It’s hard to believe the ponce had it in him,” Spike muttered, annoyed at being ignored.
“Shut up, Spike. Xander is the best friend I’ve ever had. Actually, you kind of remind me of him,” she told Jason with a smile. He couldn’t help but return it with a grin of his own, feeling honored by the comparison.
“I saved the world too once, you know. Got burned to a right crisp in the process even, but no one cares about that, do they? No, it’s just old Spike, who cares if he gives his life to stop an army of uber-vamps from taking over the world.”
“I care, Spike,” she said, gently stroking the back of his head. He turned in his seat so he could look back at her, and was relieved to see her sincerity. “I cared enough to come looking for you, and even risked my life traveling to another dimension to find you, so don’t think for one minute that no one cares. You’re my hero, a real champion.” She leaned forward a brushed a gentle kiss across his lips. This small act, and that she did it in front of Jason, overwhelmed him.
The entire time he had been chasing after Buffy, more than anything he had wanted this, for her to tell him that she cared about him and express that affection in front of others without shame. She had never given it to him, not really. Even at the very end, when she told him she loved him, he knew that she was lying. He was never anything more to her than her dirty little secret. But here was Willow, freely giving him what he craved without a second thought. She cared about him, really cared, and that knowledge filled him with such happiness that it made his chest tighten as if his dead heart would burst from its inability to beat for her. He knew the analogy was a bit over the top, but deep down he was still a bad poet after all, and couldn’t help it.
He kissed her back, more passionately this time, wanting to consume her, to pull her inside himself so that he would never have to be without her again. When he finally pulled away, Willow was breathless, with cheeks flushed, and lips slightly swollen. Her renewed desire shone in her eyes like a beacon and was reflected in his.
“Maybe I should get us back to the Circus before you two combust,” Jason interjected, starting the car and heading out. The spell had been broken somewhat, but there was a promise in the blonde vampire’s eyes that said she was in for a thorough shagging the moment he could get her alone. The look he gave her hit her like a bolt of lightning, going straight to her core, and she let out a shuddering breath.
Jason stepped on the gas a little harder, hoping they wouldn’t lose patience and simply pounce on each other, which would likely lead to being pulled over. Anita would kill him if he got another ticket and lost his license, she depended on him playing chauffer too much.
“So, your hero, huh?” Spike asked smugly, “I bet I’m a better champion than that poof, Angel.”

She hadn’t meant for this to happen again, in fact she was very clear with herself the last time that she would not allow it to happen again. But, as Spike stroked his hand lightly across her bare back, she couldn’t help but snuggle closer to him, breathing in his scent and reveling in the feel of the smooth expanse of his body stretched out beneath hers.
She wasn’t ashamed of herself like Buffy had been. She always thought Buffy and Spike’s involvement had been mistake; they had both gone into it for all the wrong reasons. Besides, Spike had a soul now, but even if he hadn’t, Willow doubted it would have mattered to her much. What concerned her was that ever since she had started dreaming about him, back on her own world, she had felt unbelievably drawn to him. The situation had only compounded since she had arrived here, and what’s more, she seemed to be feeling a similar pull to others as well, such as Asher and Richard. Willow was worried there was something magical causing it all, and that once the situation was resolved she would no longer have feelings for the vampire she was currently wrapped around. The thought of it made her sad, but what was worse, she knew Spike would be devastated, and she couldn’t stand the thought of breaking his heart again. She had to get to the bottom of this as soon as possible. If she was going to end up hurting him, she didn’t want to prolong things and only make them worse.
Softly, she kissed him on the chest, where her head had previously been resting, and told him she was going to take a shower. Reluctantly, she pulled away, wrapping a sheet around herself before making her way to the bathroom. She saw Spike smile at her as she crossed the room in such a way that it made her blush, despite the thorough debauching he had just given her. Then, with a smug expression, he rolled onto his side, pulling the remaining blanket up over him and closed his eyes.
Willow let the hot water pound against her aching muscles, trying to clear her head of the delicious memories of how they had gotten such a thorough workout in the first place. She needed to concentrate. There had to be somewhere on this world where she could do some research. After all, this dimension was crawling with magic; they probably hade boe books on magic around than even the Watcher’s Council ever had. She just needed to know where to look. She wished she had someone like Giles around that she could talk to, but she didn’t. She and Spike were alone here, and as great as the vamp wonder was at killing things, he didn’t really have the patience for research. ‘And even if he did,’ she reminded herself, ‘you can’t exactly ask him to help you research whether or not some supernatural force is attracting you to him.’
She exited the bathroom to find Spike fast asleep. Willow knew she should really try to sleep also, but she wasn’t tired. Maybe some warm milk would do the trick. Jason had thoughtfully drawn her a map to the kitchen from her room so that she wouldn’t get lost again, so tossing on some clothes and grabbing the scrap of paper, she headed out. She was a bit surprised, however, when she arrived to find Anita sitting at the counter drinking a cup of coffee.
“Umm, hi,” Willow said, feeling a bit self-conscious about rummaging through someone else’s kitchen. She had been told to help herself to whatever she needed, though, so she focused on the task at hand, slipping a mug of milk into the microwave. “I didn’t expect to find anyone else up at this hour.”
“I work nights,” Anita answered, “and obviously Jean-Claude keeps late hours too, so sometimes I end up not mg itg it to bed before sunrise.”
“Should you be drinking coffee then, won’t it keep you up?”
“Nah, I just like the taste of it. It would take a truck load of caffeine to have much of an effect on me anymore. It drives Micah crazy, because if he has even one cup, he’s jittery for hours.”
“Micah, he’s your, umm, Nimba-Jah, right?”
“Nimir-Raj,” she corrected.
“Right, sorry. I’m still not sure exactly what it all means, but Jason was explaining that Micah and you are the leaders of the wereleopard pack?”
“That’s right.”
“He also said that technically you’re the Lupa for the werewolf pack…” Anita flinched slightly at this.
“Jason said a lot. Until Richard picks a new one, yes, I am the Lupa.”
Willow saw the pain in her expression and instantly regretted saying anything. “I’m sorry; I didn’t know you and Richard weou kou know…I guess I should have put two and two together.”
“It’s okay. Richard and I broke up a long time ago; I just want him to be happy now.”
“Umm, I don’t mean to pry further, but this is all so different for me. On my world werewolves are really rare, and as far as I know, almost always live isolated from other people or werewolves. I don’t even know if we have other kinds of weres. So, I hope you don’t mind my asking, but how is it that you’re a wereleopard and a werewolf at the same time?”
“Actually, I’m neither,” she answered, then noticing Willow’s increased confusion added, “It’s complicated. Look, tell you what, you answer a question for me, and I’ll explain the whole sordid thing for you.”
“Okay,” Willow said hesitantly.
“Is it true you almost destroyed your world once?” Then, noticing her slightly hurt expression added, “Don’t be mad at Jason, he had to say something. He’s low enough down the totem pole that if he hadn’t and it was discovered later that he knew, he would have been punished severely. Jean-Claude told me everything when I got home from work, but I wanted to hear it from you. Is it true?”
“Yes.”
“And you don’t think maybe you should have shared this bit of information when we were getting acquainted earlier?” Anita asked sarcastically.
“If you were in an alternate dimension surrounded by creatures that had already tried to kill you, would you tell them that you had almost destroyed the world once? Talk about giving someone a reason to kill you.”
“Good point,” she conceded. “Not to sound like a broken record, but if you decide to try to destroy the world again, I will have to kill you.”
“Fair enough,” Willow agreed, then added with the subtlety of a brick, “So, maybe now you can explain to me exactly what you are, because you say you’re not a werewolf, or wereleopard, but you’re a leader of both groups, plus you spend a fair amount of time hanging out with vampires, and I know you’re not human, because there’s way too much power pouring off you, so what are you?”
Anita tried not to take offense at the question, but it was late and her nerves were a bit frazzled. “Well, I used to think I was human, but I know better now,” she answered bitterly. “I guess you could call me a necromancer. I have power over the dead.”
“Umm, okay, that’s different.”
“It’s not really THAT strange. I work at a place called Animators Inc., with some others who have the same talent. We raise zombies for a living.”
Willow felt her jaw drop at this, as she fought to find some sort of response to this information. “So, does it have a dental plan?” she finally asked lamely.
“Sure, the benefits are great; the money’s not bad either. Anyway, after taking the first three vampire marks my powers increased considerably, and I got my own animal to call, which is how I became Nimir-Ra for the wereleopards, although technically I already kind of was their Nimir-Ra because I had killed their last leader. I was also seeing Richard before this point, and we were pretty serious, so he made me his Lupa, which is rare to choose a non-were, but not completely unheard of. So, that’s how I ended up both Lupa, and Nimir-Ra.”
“Wow, you weren’t kidding when you said it was complicated,” Willow said, shaking her head slowly.
“Well, you must know what it’s like, being a human servant and all.”
“But I’m not.”
“Not what?”
“Not a human servant, in fact I’m not even sure what you mean by that.”
“You haven’t taken any of the marks?” Anita asked, a little surprised.
“I don’t think so.”
“Oh, you’d know. So all your power is your own?”
“Yeah, but it wasn’t always like this. Used to be I was just a computer geek, but then I started messing with the dark arts, and it just sort of snowballed from there.uallually, I kind of wanted to talk to you about that anyway. Ever since I got here, my power has been a bit off, and I was wondering where I could go to do some research to find out what is going on.”
“Hmm, I don’t know about research, but I might know someone who can help you.”
