Chapter 11
Erik’s tears dried on his face as he slept, his cheek pressed to the cool floor of the lair. He dreamt.
“Will you stay?”
“Of course.”
He lay behind her, feeling the rise and fall of her even breaths as her body pressed to his.
She spoke his name, sighed it as if in a dream.
His hand rested on her hip as she lay; he felt her take his own in hers. She pulled it up her body, resting it on her breast.
She was small; his hand nearly covered the whole of her as he worked his fingers gently, feeling the soft flesh give under his hand.
He heard her low sigh and pressed himself to her, his breath now heavy and labored as his fingers traced her nipple.
Again her voice, his name on her lips. She turned to face him, her hair falling over her eyes.
He cupped her jaw in the palm of his hand, carefully placing the fallen hair behind her ear, revealing her face.
Christine.
Erik’s eyes snapped open, his back arching over the floor as the warm flood of his semen covered his hand. He shuddered as he came, gripping himself tighter as his whole body tensed. His hand was quick, sharp, and did not stop its tight rhythm until the orgasm subsided, leaving him heaving against the floor as he slowly pulled his hand from his pants.
He felt damp with sweat, his lashes wet with tears, a pounding in his head. He rose to his knees, wincing as he raised himself. Slowly he moved to his dressing table and removed his pants. He stepped into a fresh pair of black trousers, buttoning them as if in slow motion.
You don’t care about them.
The voice in his head sneered.
Dirty, dirty. Dirty lech. You are but no better than that filth Buquet.
“Stop it,” he whispered, his fists clenching. “You know nothing. You know nothing.”
The voice seemed to smile as it spoke.
I know what I have seen.
“And what of it?” he cried. “Do you not see me now? Would I weep for those that mean nothing? Would I mourn for flesh alone?”
You do mourn. You mourn only your own flesh. And…
The voice hesitated.
“And? Speak, you do not fool me.”
And Christine’s.
Erik cursed the voice.
“You know nothing of my love. My love for flesh, indeed it is real,” he nodded to the damp pants at his feet. “I am but a man.”
Indeed. And what a man you were.
Erik’s eyes cast down as he remembered Sarah’s face, his greedy hands forcing her on himself.
I saw you. I saw your hands violate her. You smiled when she cried. Tell me, do her tears make you hard?
“You mock me,” he spoke slowly. “And I will not have it.”
What will you do?
The voice continued.
Throw me up against the wall, push your soiled hands into me?
Erik felt he had been kicked in the stomach. He shook his head slowly. “No. No. No. She saw me.”
Indeed, and she recoiled.
“No.” His voice was tense. “She. Saw. Me. She knows my heart.”
And Ms. Daae? Did she too, pray tell, know this heart that you speak of?
“No.” He strode from the dressing table, seating himself at his organ. “I had no chance to show her.”
Oh but you did.
Erik sneered. “Leave me.” His hands fell over the ivory keys, the first notes drowning out the voice.
As you wish.
~~*~~
Alone...so alone. There's no one....
Sitting by the edge of the lake, Sarah finally cried for all the pain endured, for the pain carefully tucked away behind a facade of control, for the pain she had let no one see. She cried for the times she hadn't after her parents' accident and for the loss of her grandmother.
I will not cry for him....she thought bitterly. Not after that hell...
Sarah wiped her eyes and watched the gentle waves of the dark waters. There was no need in remembering how much time she had wasted with Cameron, nothing could change what had happened.
Foolish, foolish girl. To be so supposedly smart...you were sure fooled by him. Sarah's mind unwillingly wandered over the memories of their relationship. You always had an excuse didn't you Cameron? Always a way to turn it into my fault...
Sarah clenched her jaw as the anger swelled over her, making the throbbing in her head pound even more.
"Damn you!" Her voice echoed out over the water. "I don't have time for this! You don't" her voice cracked as she hugged her knees to herself. "You don't show ...weakness." Sarah put her head down as she choked back more sobs.
And I am so weak....weak and alone.... Sarah tried to fight her exhaustion and failed, falling asleep in the soft grass beside the water.

The call of a songbird lulled Sarah from her sleep. She turned onto her back, staring at the azure sky as she regained awareness of where she was and why. The serenity of the nature surrounding her was a bitter contradiction to her own inner turmoil. Taking a deep breath, she hauled herself into a sitting position and slowly replayed the events of the past day, trying to clarify it in her mind.
The dream...I woke up when the lightning hit...tried to go find a light....Erik came up behind me... I knew from then on was real...don't deny it...don't try to. Why Sarah? You allowed it to happen, hell you wanted it to happen.
The last thought stilled her...You knew and you wanted.... Erik
Are you not afraid of me? That’s what he asked.
I told him no.
I meant it.
She looked at the trees swaying gently in the soft breeze, heard the gentle calls of the songbirds.
Why did he turn on me? It doesn't make sense. Why would he?
Another memory came shooting back to her.
I can assume the reason for your dramatic change of heart.
Assume...the power of that one word. He thinks...oh God he thinks I am afraid of his face.
Sarah shook her head at the burden laid upon her.
Oh Erik why me? She clenched her hands in her hair.
Why choose someone as messed up as I am… She hugged her arms around herself and rocked back and forth on the ground.
Was he watching me play this morning? Did he hear? See my reaction to the note? No wonder he… Wiping the tears from her face, Sarah took a deep breath and tried to center herself. You don't show weakness
Sarah stood and began to walk resolutely back to her car. There was only one person who could answer, who could explain.
Erik
If there was still a way to reach him.
