Jason finished eating his last slice of bacon. "Well, it may have taken a little while to get around to it, but breakfast was delicious."
"Definitely." Nathaniel smiled at Cari, downing the rest of his orange juice. Looking at Jason, he almost frowned. "You’re gonna have to head out soon. Aren’t you?"
"Yeah. I want to get back to the Circus before JC wakes up." Jason shrugged. "He’s gonna have to feed."
Cari smiled at him, shaking her head as she stood to get the dished. "Well, it would have been warm..." She looked at Jason. "So... um... When can we get back together?" She sorted the dishes, then started filling the sink as she talked, glancing over her shoulder at them.
"Well, I’m not leaving anytime soon. I mean, unless you want to kick me out. Jason has work tonight and I really don’t feel like going back to Anita’s." Nathaniel stood, bringing the dishes that Cari missed over to the sink.
"Well, I’m planning to stop by tomorrow evening. I don’t have to work." Jason sat, letting his food settle. Watching Cari and Nathaniel together, Jason felt happier and more complete than ever before. Thinking of how lucky he was, he smiled warmly.
Cari grinned, setting the plates in Nathaniel’s hands into the sink, then hugging him around the waist, nuzzling him. "Well, I’m hardly going to complain about seeing you guys... Why on earth would I?" She looked at Jason. "You look like you’ve got the brightest star in heaven in your hands..."
"No, just two of the hottest lovers." Jason smirked as Nathaniel pulled Cari tighter to him, just holding her.
She purred at her fellow cat, subconsciously rubbing her face over his shoulder as one might mark another for protection... or mating. "Glad you think that, Jason. I’ll resist the urge to fish for compliments."
"Oh, I’m sure you’ll get plenty out of Kitty Cat there. He seems pretty cozy right now." Smirking, Jason walked over to Cari and kissed her lips. "Unfortunately, I have to get going."
"Why don’t you come back later tonight? Then we can both go back to the Circus to sleep... Since Riley will be back soon, for the night." Nathaniel looked at Jason.
"If I didn’t know you loved me, I’d say you were trying to just hide from ‘the Bitch’." Jason kissed Nathaniel goodbye. "I’ll be back around midnight, okay?"
"Sure. Love you." Nathaniel leaned his head on Cari’s.
"We’ll be up." She blew a teasing kiss at the wolf. "Now shoo. I don’t want you to be late." She watched Jason smirk and wave as he left, telling herself that it was far too early for the feeling she had right now- that a small part of her had left.
She sighed, inhaling the scent of Nathaniel and the Pard. "I like that about you..." She said softly, closing her eyes as she and Nathaniel stood there.
"Like what, exactly?" Nathaniel smirked as he pulled away and moved to sit at the table.
Cari shrugged, turning to the dishes. "How... open you are with Jason about how you feel. It’s... relieving. I mean, John... he didn’t show much of anything." She slipped her hands into the water, beginning in quick, easy movements to wash the dishes.
Frowning, Nathaniel watched Cari. "Who?"
"My father."
"Oh... he wasn’t a very caring sort?" Nathaniel had never given much thought as to what Cari’s home life growing up had been like. Now his curiosity was piqued.
"Not unless there was company." She shrugged, the dish drainer quickly becoming full. "He’s... well, John owns Tailor Industries, the software company... and he was more in love with that and his money than I." Cari glanced at him. "I haven’t seen him since I was fifteen." She dried her hands, deciding to finish the rest later. "Want me to help you brush your hair?"
Nathaniel processed what Cari had just told him. Somehow, he had always thought that she was from like the perfect family. Obviously, his assumptions were wrong. "I’d love you to help me." Walking out of the room, he returned a moment later with his hairbrush.
She took it from him, their fingers brushing. "It’s only fair after all... I was the one who undid your braid." Cari smirked, brushing her lips over his, then pushed him jokingly toward a chair. "Now, Hun, sit your cute butt down."
Chuckling, Nathaniel sat. "So... if you don’t mind talking about it... Where was your mom growing up? I mean, didn’t she stand up to your father when he was being an ass?"
Cari’s hands paused as she knelt behind Nathaniel to accommodate the length of his hair. "Mom... she drank. Not as bad as Rye’s mom, but... Dad didn’t let her out much because she was a disgrace to the Tailor name... When I was twelve, she’d been depressed for years and..." She began brushing the ends of his hair again, losing herself in the texture and silkiness, and spoke the words as if they were meaningless. "She ate a bottle of pills on my thirteenth birthday."
His eyebrows shot up. "You mean, your mom died... killed herself when you were only thirteen?"
She paused again, having gotten the knots out of the bottom foot of his hair. "Yeah... why?"
"Oh... I just pictured you with like this mind blowing awesome family. I guess I’m just a little shocked." Nathaniel shrugged. "Did things get much better when you moved out?"
"Well... Riley’s family was worse than mine... but she and her big brother made it okay. Eddy took care of us. Between the three of us, we supported the house... I managed to save enough money to get the shop..." She shrugged, shortening a long story as she stood to finish brushing out his auburn hair.
Nathaniel opened his mouth to reply but was cut off by the ringing of the doorbell. "Who could be here now?" Riley had a key, so she wouldn’t be using the doorbell, and ‘Tailor Made’ wasn’t open yet...
"Um... I’ll go check..." Cari set the brush down, then headed to the door downstairs, the bell ringing constantly. "Com-" She unlocked the door and froze. "I... Miss Blake?!"
"I’m here for my leopard." Anita pushed past Cari and into the shop. "Where is he?" Turning she scowled at Cari.
"Excuse me?" Cari gaped at this woman’s audacity at invading her territory... Her beast adding that she was threatening her mate. "I think you need to leave."
"I think not, Tailor." Anita fingered her gun. "Nathaniel is my Pomme de Sang and hasn’t been home in days. I am his Nimar Ra, and I’ve come to take him home." A cold stare crossed onto Anita’s face.
It was the look of an assassin... and in Cari’s opinion and she was sure everyone else’s- Riley was better at it. Where was Riley, anyway? Cari presented Anita with an utterly unimpressed look. "Draw your weapon, Miss Blake, and we’ll have a problem on our hands. If Nathaniel wanted to see you, he would-" She was cut off by the sound of feet on the stairs.
Nathaniel heard the voice of Anita drift up the stairs. Shit! What the hell was she doing here? Walking into the room, he nearly flinched as Anita shifted her cold gaze to him. "What are you doing here, Anita?"
"You haven’t been home in over a week. I had to feed off Zane this morning." Anita shuddered slightly. "Never again. You are coming home with me."
Nathaniel looked at Cari. He didn’t want to go, but the dominance emanating off Anita was overwhelming. HELP! I don’t want to leave you. His eyes were pleading as he looked at his lover.
"Nathaniel, go upstairs." Cari glared at Anita, her eyes colder and more unfeeling than the dead. "And you, Miss Blake, need to go. I don’t want to have to bother the nice police."
"It’s Ms. Blake, and don’t even think about calling the police." Watching Nathaniel turn to leave, she yelled, "In the car Nathaniel... Now!"
"I..." No! I won’t leave my mate. No! No! No!!! Somehow the thought of his mate’s order gave him the strength to resist Anita. "No, Anita. I’m not yours anymore. I’m with Cari now." His voice was bold as he spoke.
Widening her eyes in anger and surprise, Anita stared at the wereleopard, then turned to Cari. Her voice was venomous and full of rage. "You bitch. Not only do you take Jason from me... Now you actually dare to steal my Pomme de Sang?!"
"Hm... Jason was yours?" Cari asked calmly. "And... they came willingly. Now... go. You’re on private property."
"You do not scare me, Cari." Anita fingered her fun as her eyes blazed with anger. Opening her mouth to threaten Cari, she heard Nathaniel growl at her. In the same moment, Riley leveled a gun less than a foot away from Anita’s head. Where had she come from?!
"I think your best bet would be to leave, Executioner." Riley flipped the safety off of the gun in her hands as Nathaniel’s eyes widened at Riley’s mysterious arrival.
"You- Fi-" At Riley’s look, Anita cut herself off. "Riley. You wouldn’t dare."
"Actually... she would." Cari moved, kissing Nathaniel’s cheek. "Ignore her. Anita will go away shortly."
"Careful, Anita, your lack of intelligence is starting to show." Riley’s eyes were like stone and her voice was stern and emotionless. "Get out, and don’t ever think of coming near Cari, Nathaniel, or Jason again unless invited to do so. Do you understand me?"
With a glare and a growl of frustration, Anita left, pausing in the door. "You’d best make the right decision, Nathaniel."
Nathaniel couldn’t help the knot that formed in his gut as Anita left. "Where the hell did you come from?" He stared at Riley.
"Back door." Riley watched Cari for a moment. "You are to tell me if she comes back here again, okay?"
Cari rolled her eyes. "I was hardly scared of her... I mean, really. I’d have taken her down before she managed to draw her stupid browning." She glanced at Nathaniel. "You okay?"
"I’ll be fine." Nathaniel gave Riley a skeptical look. "Interesting, how you knew Anita’s ‘nickname’. Not many normal people do... Come to think of it, not many people would be able to intimidate her like that."
Riley nodded and turned her softening gaze to the wereleopard. "It’s not hard to intimidate someone when you have a gun to their head."
Nathaniel blinked and opened his mouth to reply only to have Cari interrupt. "Rye, can we talk?"
Closing his mouth, Nathaniel walked over and kissed Cari’s cheek. "I’ll be upstairs." Looking at Riley, he nodded. "Uh... thanks for the Anita thing."
Riley nodded back, putting her gun back in its holster as he left. "What’s up, Cari?" Riley walked into the backroom with her friend in tow. Going to Cari’s desk, she opened the drawer and started taking out her CDs.
"Well, it’s just... Well, Jason, Nathaniel, and I have come to a decision." Cari ran a nervous hand through her hair. "We’re... well, dating."
Riley paused, but then continued to get some of her CDs and books together. "Okay... I kinda guess that though, Cari."
The werepanther paused. "Oh... Riley, what are you doing?"
"Packing." Riley grabbed the CDs and books before walking out to the main room of ‘Tailor Made’, where her bags were. "Is that what you wanted to tell me?" Putting the things in the bag that she’d taken to the Circus, she looked back at Cari. "It’s obvious that I know you are dating them."
"Packing? Why? Where are you going?" Cari grabbed Riley’s hand. "And how’d you know?"
Giving Cari a look that said she was being thicker than ever, Riley picked up a bag and slung it over her shoulder. "Cari, you just went on a date with them last night, and I bet I didn’t leave and spend the night at the Circus just so you guys could watch movies alone."
"Well... that’s... that’s not the kind of dating I mean. I mean that... well... it’s... exclusive." She bit her lip. "And you didn’t answer."
"I’m leaving, Cari." Riley brushed past her and up the stairs. What Cari was saying finally sank in. She didn’t want to have the benefits with their relationship anymore. Sighing, Riley continued up the stairs. Nathaniel was washing the dishes in the kitchen.
It was best that she left. She never did like the idea of ‘wearing out her welcome’. And Cari could use the alone time with her new beaus.
"But- why? And I... what so you mean, you stayed at the Circus? I thought you were going to stay at a hotel. Cari’s face fell. "It’s not because of Jason, is it?"
Pausing, Nathaniel looked at the women. "Jason? Is everything alright, you guys?"
"Everything is fine." Riley looked at Cari. "Yes, I stayed at the Circus. No, it’s not Jason." Shrugging, Riley walked to the bedroom. "It’s just time to go. Besides, you could use some personal Jason/ Nathaniel time."
"Riley, as much as I l... like them, I’m hardly going to stop being your friend for them. And who invited you to the Circus?" Cari blocked the door. "Rye, talk to me."
"I never thought that we would stop being friends... That will never happen, don’t worry." Riley looked at the bed as she slowly walked to the closet to get her clothing. "Nice job on the bed."
"Riley..." Cari blushed. "What are you running from?"
"I’m not running... I’m gathering my wits." Riley started folding her clothes and placing them on the love seat in the room. "Besides, I have an appointment in Phoenix soon."
"You said that wasn’t for another week... and you didn’t answer me. Who invited you?" The more Cari listened to Riley, the more she was convinced that the other woman was running. Taking a deep breath, Cari froze. "Asher!"
Riley’s head snapped up, scanning the room. "Where?! Here?" Not seeing him, but rather the look on Cari’s face, Riley sighed her frustration and went back to her packing. Walking to the closet, she got out her suitcase and began putting her clothes in it, not daring to speak. She had to get out of there.
"Why does it smell like you’ve tumbled through a make out session with the blond whom you claimed was a nuisance before?" Cari moved, stepping between the assassin and the door. "Rye... talk to me. Please?"
"Okay..." Riley turned away from her packing mission and began to pace. "So maybe we kissed." At the disbelieving look on Cari’s face, she elaborated. "Fine. So we kissed quite a bit, but it doesn’t mean anything!" Riley felt anxious and it was beginning to annoy her.
"Uh huh. So that’s why you’re running."
"I’m not running." Riley scowled.
"Oh?" Cari quirked a brow. "Really?"
"Stop it, Cari."
Cari blinked, unimpressed, clearly waiting for an answer.
"I don’t want this... I don’t want to feel attracted to him... I don’t want to feel attracted to any male! I’m not running. I’m ending it before it gets any worse!" Riley flailed her arms as she spoke. She was itching for a good fight... or fuck. That thought annoyed her further. She had to get out of here.
"Rye, it’s okay to be attracted to a man... I know he hurt you-"
"No, Cari. We are so not talking about this!" Riley sighed, a sadness in her eyes. "Please... just let me go. I’ll be back in a month to visit if you’ll have me. Now... I just have to get out of here."
Cari sighed, hugging Riley. "Fine. You’d better, okay? And call... and eat right and-"
"I had a mother... I don’t need another." Riley smirked, moving to kiss her friend goodbye. Remembering Cari’s new relationship with Nathaniel and Jason, she paused and stepped back. She zipped her finished suitcase and nodded before walking from the room.
"Yeah... but unlike your mom, I actually care about you, so you damn well better take care of yourself." Cari sighed as she followed the other woman to the kitchen door. "Love you, Rye."
Riley had finished packing everything from upstairs. The movies were staying, and other than that, there were only her clothes and books. The rest of her things were downstairs by the door. She’d call a cab to take her things to the airport and she would follow on her bike. The way she saw it, she could be on a flight by 8:oo p.m., if not sooner, be home by midnight, and back to her normal life. Well, Asher free life... nothing about her life was normal.
Looking at Cari, she smiled. "Ditto." With that, she nodded to Nathaniel, who was now watching them and walked out the door.
Nathaniel felt a new knot in his stomach. "Is she angry? Why is she packing?"
"She’s... got business in Phoenix." Cari sighed, kissing his cheek. "It’s okay. We knew it was coming."
"She looked kind of upset when she came in, and what was up with the cold stare and gun? Jeez, she reminded me of ‘Death’." Nathaniel shrugged, but the nagging thought of that stare pulled at him. "Sorry. I just..." He frowned. "Never mind. I know you have to get ready for work." Shaking his head, he went back to putting away the now clean dishes.
"Nathaniel... Hun, if you’ve got a question, ask." Cari smoothed a hand down his back. "Besides... I’m my own boss. What am I going to do, fire myself?"
"No question... Really. Just a nagging thought. Don’t worry about it." Nathaniel smiled, turning to face her. Leaning down, he brushed his lips over hers. "I’m going to take a shower, alright?"
"Mm, alright." Cari brushed her lips back over his. "Come down and keep me company after?"
"Sure thing." The wereleopard smirked, then walked into the bathroom.
