Here's the next chapter. I hope you all are enjoying this. :)
Warning: There is death, but I won't tell you whose.
I came home one afternoon to a quiet house. It was the 7th of November; my birthday. I was eighteen. I hadn’t said anything to anyone, because I don’t want a fuss made over me, but Gramps had said we were going somewhere special for my birthday. That’s why it surprised me that the house was so quiet.
“Gramps?” I called into the silence. There was no answer. I walked into the living room and I think I screamed.
My grandfather was lying on the floor, with one hand clutching his chest, unmoving. I grabbed the phone and immediately dialed 911.
“911 emergency,” a pleasant voice said.
“Yes, I just found my grandfather in the living room. He’s not moving. I think he had a heart attack,” I explained.
“What’s the address?”
I told her and she said the paramedics were on their way. I hung up the phone and raced to Gramps. He was deathly pale.
“Gramps, you have to get up,” I begged. I touched his pulse point, but I felt nothing. He wasn’t breathing, either. “No, come on Gramps. I need you. You’re my only family.” I felt a cold hand touch my shoulder as a sob wracked my body.
“The paramedics are here,” Jasper whispered, pulling me out of their way. They checked him the same way I had and tried to resuscitate him, but they sadly shook their heads. They brought out one of the black body bags and zipped the last member of my family into it. I turned and sobbed into Jasper’s chest. The paramedics told Jasper the funeral home would be in touch for arrangements. I felt Jasper nod and thank them for coming so quickly. When they had left, he gently led me to my room. He seemed to know I wouldn’t want to stay in the last place I saw my grandfather.
He laid me on my bed so he could call Carlisle and the rest of his family, but I couldn’t let him go.
“It’s all right, love. I just need to make a call or two. You don’t need to be alone right now,” he soothed.
“I’m not. You’re here,” I whimpered.
“And I’m not going anywhere. I just need to call someone.” I finally released him and curled into a little ball. Still, he paused before he left my room. He affectionately brushed my disheveled hair from my forehead. The tears continued to flow, sobs being the only sound I was capable of. All coherency had left me. Jasper tenderly kissed some of my tears away. “I am so sorry, love.” He stepped out to make his calls.
A few moments later, he returned.
“Come here,” he whispered, lifting me effortlessly from my bed and seating himself so he could hold me in his lap. I was still locked in a little ball, but he carefully pulled my arms apart. I clung to him, desperate for comfort. He rocked me as if I was a child, but I didn’t mind. “They’ll be here soon,” he murmured. “It’s going to be all right, I promise.” I nodded, trying to quiet my sobs. “I’m here, love. I’ll take care of you.” I lifted my head slightly, and he leaned down to kiss my tears away again. I closed my eyes and his cold lips brushed my eyelids. I shuddered; he held me closer.
“Thank you,” I croaked. I was calming down.
“No problem, love.”
I sighed. “You keep calling me that.”
“I—”
“I like it.”
“Me, too.”
I lifted my head again. His lips met mine in a slow, chaste kiss. It was a kiss of comfort, and I desperately needed it.
Someone cleared their throat from the doorway. Jasper pulled back, placed a kiss on my forehead, and helped me stand. Carlisle was standing just outside the door.
“We came as soon as we could,” he said. I nodded thanks and wiped my eyes. As I walked out, he gave me a quick, fatherly hug, just like my father used to. It almost made me start crying again, but I fought the urge.
Everyone was waiting in the kitchen. I saw Edward, Bella, and three people I didn’t know. There was a woman with caramel hair, a woman not much older than me with blonde hair, and a man with dark cropped hair. He was rippling with muscle. The blonde looked like a model, and the other woman seemed the motherly type. They all had various shades of golden eyes.
Bella walked up and hugged me.
“We’re here for you,” she whispered. I nodded, not trusting my voice.
“Let me introduce you to the family,” Carlisle said. “This is my wife, Esme.” The caramel haired woman gave me a quick hug. “And this is Emmett, my son, and his wife, Rosalie. She’s also Jasper’s sister.” The brunette wall of muscle waved at me, but the blonde looked as if she’d rather be somewhere else. I felt intimidated by all the beautiful people in the room. I felt plain standing by everyone, even Bella.
“Hello,” I murmured. “Pardon me if I have to ask your names again. I have a horrible memory.”
“Is there anything you need?” …Esme asked.
“Can you bring back the dead?” She sadly shook her head. “Then, no, there’s nothing.”
“We wanted to let you know that you can come stay with us. If you don’t want to, we can find somewhere for you to stay,” Carlisle offered.
“Thanks, but I want to stay here,” I said.
“That might not be wise,” Jasper whispered. “I don’t think you need to stay here.”
“I’m eighteen. I can make my own decisions,” I fumed.
“You’re eighteen? You didn’t tell me. When was your birthday?”
I hung my head. Edward surprised me by walking over and wrapping his arms around me in a hug.
“It was today, wasn’t it?” he asked. I nodded against his shoulder.
“How did you know?” I questioned.
“No one should lose a loved one on their birthday.” He hadn’t answered my question, but I couldn’t bring myself to care.
“Well, that’s how life works.” I pulled back.
“Whitaker, there’s a package on the table,” Bella said.
I looked to where she indicated. There was a small, flat package with a red bow. She handed it to me. Hands shaking, I opened it. Inside were two tickets to a concert by my favorite band. I dropped the box and covered my mouth to hold the sobs in.
“What is it?” Jasper wrapped an arm around me to keep me standing when I didn’t answer him. Bella bent to pick up the box and tickets. “Bella, what is it?”
“It’s two tickets to a Linkin Park concert for tonight.”
“They’re my favorite band,” I gasped. “And Gramps hated them. He couldn’t stand their music. Said it wasn’t worth his time.” I took a shaky breath as a tear rolled down my cheek. “He told me this morning that we were doing something special tonight. I had no idea…” My knees buckled under the wave of depressing sadness that threatened to crush me, but Jasper was there to catch me. He was becoming my rock, my protector, and my strength.
“Maybe it’d be good for you to go,” Bella suggested.
I shook my head. “You take ‘em. I wouldn’t be able to enjoy it.”
“Maybe we can swap them for a different date,” Edward proposed.
“It says they’re nonrefundable,” Bella whispered.
“Um…Emmett… Do you like that kind of music?” I asked. He nodded hesitantly. “Then, you take…”
“Rosalie,” the blonde said.
“Sorry, Rosalie. You can take her to the concert.”
“I couldn’t…” Emmett began, but I stopped him.
“They’ll be wasted if you don’t. I’m not going to use them.”
“Thank you, Whitaker.”
“You might want to get ready. It probably starts soon.” Emmett walked up and shook my hand.
“You’re a great guy. I’d be glad to meet you, if only it weren’t under these circumstances.” I managed a tiny smile.
“Thanks.”
“Thank you, Whitaker,” Rosalie said, seemingly surprised, before she and her husband left.
“That was very nice of you,” Carlisle stated.
“Gramps would expect nothing less. He’d rather me give them away than waste them.” I sighed sadly. “If you don’t mind, I need to go lie down.”
“It’s all right, but you don’t need to stay by yourself,” Carlisle said.
“I’ll stay,” Jasper offered from behind me.
“I thought you would.”
“I’ll bring you some things for your stay,” Edward said, turning to go and taking Bella with him.
“I’ll see you tomorrow,” she said on her way out.
“Thank you for coming,” I told Carlisle and Esme.
“Anytime,” Esme reassured me. “Let us know if you need anything.” She hugged me one final time before Jasper led me back to my room.
Well, Whitaker finally got to meet everybody... Bright side, right?
Gaps of Misery--Thanks. :) I try to have a bit of wit in there. (you know, wit...Whitaker? 'kay.) And I actually got an inspiration for an Emmett story the other night during a thunder storm... Who'da thunk it?
