The Cullens returned home and started the task of restoring their home to the way it originally was. Edward left immediately to return to Bella, but came back with her around three in the morning. “I need to speak to all of you,” she requested.
Given the late hour it was obviously something important, so seconds later they were all gathered around the dining room table. “Does everyone know what happened at Volterra?” she asked Carlisle. He nodded. “Good.” She turned to Liam. “You said it was my choice whether or not I wanted to become a vampire, right?”
“Yes, but I wanted to add some conditions to that.”
“Like what?” Bella asked, her frustration evident.
“I want you to take at least a year to think it over.” He held up a hand to silence her before she could protest. “I do have reasons for this. You have a unique opportunity here. The rest of us had no choice. I understand your reasons for wanting this, but I don’t agree with them.”
“What don’t you agree with?”
“You don’t feel comfortable in your own skin. You think by becoming one of us you’ll morph into this wondrous creature. I hate to break it to you, cupcake, but that’s not how this works. You’ll remain pretty much the same, just not as breakable, and probably a lot less clumsy. All vampirism does is enhance who you already are. You won’t appear more beautiful to Edward. He’ll actually appear less beautiful to you, because you see, all of those things that make humans enamored with us only affect human perception. You’ll see Edward as he was when he was human. If these things are all that’s are holding you together, you’ll no longer find his face mesmerizing, or his scent intoxicating.”
“Is this true?” She looked to Carlisle in horror.
“I wouldn’t have put it so bluntly, but yes,” Carlisle answered.
Liam grinned evilly. “Also, will he still want you when you no longer smell so good? Without your blood you’ll lose that, you know.”
“Quit upsetting her!” Edward growled. “You know I love her. If it was just her scent, I would have killed her a long time ago.”
“I know. I’m just giving her things to consider. Besides, I thought you were against this. Anyway,” he said, turning back to Bella, “remember how you felt without Edward? Imagine feeling that way for an eternity, because once you’re a vampire, you’re stuck. If you end up half as powerful as me the Volturi will never end you. You saw how they reacted to me. I can pretty much do whatever the hell I want. They won’t admit to being afraid of me, but they are. They agreed to my proposal strictly to appease me. The less trouble I cause for them, the better. If anything happens to Edward, you’ll be alone and immortal.
Which, incidentally, brings me to my third point. Charlie, Renee, Jacob—they’re all going to die. Any human you come to care for is going to die. The pain of losing someone you love never goes away, which I suppose is a continuation of my second point. But that’s the reason I’m the only one who socializes with humans. I think I inherited some sort of masochist gene or something.
My fourth and final point relates to all those things I told you I miss. You’re young yet. There is so much you haven’t experienced as a human. I don’t want you to rob yourself of all that. I think I’m the only one of us who’s experienced sex as a human, and I highly recommend it.”
“I have, too,” Jasper spoke up. “And I agree with Liam.”
“It is quite an experience,” Esme mumbled.
“I stand corrected: I’m one of three, and we all seem to agree,” Liam grinned. “Look, Bella, what this all boils down to is that this is a very serious decision. It isn’t as simple as you loving Edward and wanting to spend eternity with him.”
Bella opened her mouth to speak, but Liam cut her off. “No, your becoming a vampire will not save Charlie and Jacob. As long as they’re alive and you care about them, your enemies will be able to use them to get to you. You can try to protect them, but exactly how are you going to do that if you’re halfway around the world?” Bella was speechless. “Scary how I can get into your head, isn’t it?” Liam laughed.
Bella was quiet for several minutes. “So if at the end of the year I still want this, will you do it?”
“Yes.”
Carlisle grabbed his chest and fell back in his chair. “Am I hearing this right? You, who have always refused to change anyone despite how much you loved them or how much they begged, are willing to change her?”
“You heard right. But she’ll need to convince me.”
“I think I’m in shock.”
Liam gently patted the top of Carlisle’s head. “Don’t worry, I doubt it will ever happen again. Was that all you needed, Bella?”
“No. As much as I want to be a part of your family, I don’t want to force myself on all of you. I want to have a vote, which is why I wanted all of you here.”
“Very well,” Liam nodded. “I vote yes, as long as you meet my conditions, of course. Edward?”
“No,” he answered through clenched teeth.
“Alice?”
“Of course!”
“Jasper?”
“Yes.”
“Rosalie?”
“No,” she frowned.
Liam rolled his eyes. “Shocker.”
“It’s not what you think,” she protested. “I just wish someone had voted no for me. I agree with everything you said about why it’s a bad idea.”
“Emmett?” Liam continued with the vote.
“Hell, yeah!”
“Esme?”
“Yes.”
“Carlisle?”
Carlisle didn’t answer right away. “Edward, Liam’s conditions are reasonable, and if he’s actually willing to do it….”
“NO!” Edward shouted again, and he bolted out of the room.
Carlisle sighed and rubbed the bridge of his nose. “Two voted no, and six voted yes. I guess this means we’ll be having this discussion again in a year. Liam, take Bella home—and come straight back.”
“Yes, Daddy.” Liam smirked and walked Bella out.
The sun was coming up over the horizon when Liam climbed through Bella’s bedroom window with her clinging to his back. “Can I ask you something?” she asked when she was steady on her feet again.
“Sure.”
“You seem like the easygoing, fun one. Why were you trying to talk me out of being changed?”
Liam snorted. “I wasn’t. I was trying to give you a healthy dose of reality. Most of us were quite happy with our lives until fate threw us a wicked curve ball. How about instead of throwing facts at you, I tell you a story?”
Bella crawled into her bed and propped her head on her elbow. Liam took his usual seat in the rocking chair. “When I was twelve I fell in love with a scrawny, red-haired boy named Jacob Black. He was two years younger than me, but it was a match made in heaven. We were soul mates. Keep in mind that even though twelve seems young now, it wasn’t back then. The average life span was around thirty back then.
Anyway, it was about a year later when Carlisle killed our father to save my life. I don’t think I’ll ever forget that night. Jacob was waiting for us when we got back home. Carlisle knew I would have to leave right away, and Jacob decided to leave his family behind and run away with me.
I told you about being found by a Druid and joining his brotherhood. Jacob and I lived there together for six wonderful years. I tell you, it was heaven on earth. Then I found out about what had happened to Carlisle. I had to find out for myself and, of course, seek revenge. It was foolish of me, I know.
I also told you about Rudolfo, so there’s no need to revisit that. But before I could return to Jacob he’d been told I was dead, and he died of a broken heart. Yes, a human can die of a broken heart,” he said when he saw Bella’s disbelieving expression.
“I couldn’t die, so I was forced to carry on with a heart that was broken beyond repair. Like I told you, the pain never really goes away. You can’t know what the future holds. I thought I was going to live the rest of my natural life with Jacob, but fate is a cruel bitch. My heart has been broken for over three hundred years.”
Bella sighed. “I’ll take everything you said into consideration. If you feel that strongly about it, I guess I should listen to you.”
“Good.” Liam smiled. “Now I need to go. I’m sure Edward will come back when he calms down.” He got up from the chair and jumped out the window, but he didn’t go home.
It was just before dawn when Jacob’s clock radio turned on all by itself. He woke up to the theme from Titanic playing full blast. “What the hell?” he mumbled sleepily as he rolled over to turn it off. There was no doubt about it, things were getting stranger by the day.
He tried to go back to sleep but it was no use. An hour later he slipped on some pants and quietly climbed out his bedroom window so he wouldn’t wake Billy. Jacob started walking, not really paying attention to where he was going. He had a lot on his mind, everything from his friendship with Bella to his realization about Liam.
He ended up walking along the river, and eventually he spotted Liam sitting on the riverbank watching him intently. “What are you doing here?” Jacob spat.
“Thinking,” Liam answered. “Seeing as how I was here first, I could ask you the same question. As you can clearly see, I’m on the right side of the river.”
Liam stood, and Jacob found himself moving closer until he too was on the riverbank. The two men just stared at each other for several minutes. Finally Jacob broke the silence. “So, how is this supposed to work? Am I just supposed to leap into your arms and declare my undying love?”
Liam grinned. “You remember.”
“How could I forget?” Jacob shouted. “The universe has been relentlessly hounding me these past few months. What am I supposed to do?”
Liam shrugged. “Whatever you feel is right, I suppose. Now that you remember, the universe should leave you alone to make up your mind.”
“My mind has already been made up. You’re a leech, and I want you to stay away from me. I want your family to stay away from Bella.”
Jacob’s words stung, but Liam didn’t let it show. “Bella is a big girl and can make her own decisions. Though if I were you I wouldn’t throw away a perfectly good friendship just because of who she fell in love with. Your people take this rivalry thing far too seriously. We have a treaty, remember? My family isn’t a threat to you. If at any time you change your mind, you’ll know where to find me.”
Liam was gone in a flash, leaving Jacob alone. Liam’s words echoed in his mind. The exchange between them had been nothing like the way Jacob had imagined it. He’d expected Liam to try harder to change his mind and was actually kind of disappointed that he hadn’t.
Exhaustion set in quickly, and Jacob didn’t have the strength to walk back home. Instead he curled up by a tree and let sleep take him. That was where Sam found him a few hours later, after Billy had found Jacob’s bed empty and sent out a search party. “Jacob, what the hell do you think you’re doing?” Sam chided. “You had Billy worried. Why are you all the way out here?”
Jacob only shrugged. “I don’t really know,” was the only excuse he could come up with. It wasn’t exactly a lie, either. He had no idea what was going on any more.
“Well, get up off the ground and let’s get you home. For Christ’s sake, you can’t go wandering off on your own like that!”
“Sorry,” Jacob mumbled as he got up and followed Sam home.
