“Ana, I’m home!”
“I’m in the kitchen, babe.” I walked in and saw my beautiful wife shaking up a bottle. She had switched Teddy to formula about a week ago. At almost four months, he was a very good eater, and Ana had been having trouble keeping up. I kissed my wife hello and asked, “Where’s the baby?” “In his swing.” “Teddy bear!” I turned to find my son swinging happily, cooing at me as I walked over to him. “Let’s see you, big boy. What outfit does Mommy have you in today?” “That one was a gift from Kate and Elliot,” Ana replied. Teddy was looking so cute, all rolls of pudge and soft copper hair. I lifted him out of his seat and checked out his onesie. “‘Future CEO.’ Very cute.” “Thought you’d like that, Mr. Grey.” “You can be whatever you want to be.” I nuzzled Teddy’s nose. “You wanna feed him, Christian?” “I’d love to.” I took the bottle from her and headed to the family room. As much as I’d loved watching my wife nurse my son, I was happy to finally have that special bonding time feeding him myself. I sat down with Teddy and nudged the bottle over his lips. He began drinking greedily. “There you go, son. How was your day? Did you and Mommy play? My day was good, but I missed you. I had a lot of meetings today…” Before I could continue, Ana came in. “What has Teddy been telling you?” “Nothing much, just that he has the best mom in the world.” “Oh, really?” Ana rolled her eyes before plopping down on the couch next to me. “How was your day, love?” “It was good. Teddy and I went for a walk. That is, until he started screaming bloody murder. So I brought him back to the house, but he was still pretty fussy the rest of the day.” “Maybe he doesn’t like to be cooped up in his stroller.” Teddy wriggled in my arms, and I pulled the bottle away to burp him. “Maybe.” “I have an idea. Why don’t you go out to dinner with Kate, and Teddy and I will have a boys’ night?” Ana rolled her eyes at me. Twice in one conversation? Tsk, tsk. Yet, as much as I wanted to, I couldn’t do anything about her disobedience because I still had Teddy in my arms. “I’m not gonna abandon you guys. He needs his whole bedtime routine, his bath, the works.” “Ana, you haven’t been out to dinner in a while. Now that you’re not breastfeeding I can finish feeding him, and I have his whole bedtime routine down pat. I want you to get out of the house and be Ana, not just Teddy’s mom.” Ana sighed. “I’ll call Kate.” I wiped the baby’s face and continued to feed him. He was already reaching up to grasp onto the bottle himself with his little hand. I was sure my son was a prodigy already, at least in bottle-holding. “Kate said yes. I’m going to go meet her for pizza.” Ana came back in the room. “Good. I want you to have a good time. Don’t worry about us.” “Thanks, Christian.” “Come give your baby daddy a kiss.” “Christian!” I earned myself another eye roll. Maybe we’d need a trip to the playroom at Escala sometime soon… “Stow your twitchy palm, Mr. Grey.” Ana had read my mind. She placed her lips on mine, and I gave her bottom lip a tug. “Have fun, love.” I heard Ana go out the door and finished up feeding Teddy. When he was all cleaned up I placed him in his favorite spot, the swing, and made my way to the piano. Teddy gurgled happily as I played. A little while later, I picked up my son. “Woah, Teddy! You little stinker.” I carried him upstairs to change him. “It’s a good thing it’s bath time.” I went into his bathroom where we had his little baby tub set up. I had never bathed him myself and was beginning to realize that I was in a bit over my head. I gathered up a hooded towel we’d need afterwards and ran the water. Finally, I placed the baby in the tub. He was not a fan of bath time at all and started wailing. Shit! He was squirming everywhere, and I could’ve used an extra pair of hands with this slippery baby. I had to manage to hold onto him and put some soap on my hands at the same time. I looked around for his washcloth and had to stretch an arm across the room to reach it. This wasn’t going the way I expected. “Shh, shh, Teddy. Daddy’s trying to help you. Be a good boy.” Teddy continued to shriek. I did the best I could to hang onto him while running the washcloth over him, trying to clean the little crevices of his chubby body. I managed to squeeze a drop of Johnson’s baby shampoo and run it through his thin hair. I got all of the soap out and reached for the towel. “You’re okay, Teddy. We’re all done. I did it as fast I could.” I wrapped the baby in the towel and rocked him as we headed back to the nursery. He finally calmed down and relaxed in my arms. He was fifty shades of cuteness bundled in the soft terrycloth towel. I kissed his little cheek and got a diaper and his blue footie pajamas on him. I settled down into the rocking chair with Goodnight Moon. “Whew. That was an adventure, little boy.” I began to read as Teddy found his thumb and nudged his face against my chest. I rocked him gently. He was out before I was halfway through. I transferred him to his crib. Please don’t wake up, I thought. He stirred a little but didn’t wake. I tiptoed out of the room with the baby monitor in-hand and headed back to his bathroom to drain the tub. I collapsed on the couch downstairs with the monitor next to me. A little while later I awoke to the blip of the alarm. I heard Ana punch in the code and come in. “You look tired.” She came and climbed onto my lap. “I may have taken a little nap.” “It’s 9 o’clock!” Ana giggled at me. “Oh, the life of a baby daddy.” Ana hit me on the arm and nestled into my chest. “How was Teddy?” “He was pretty good until bath time.” “Mmm, did he cry?” “Cry is an understatement. Bath time really is a two-person job.” Ana laughed. “You have a point. Everything’s a bit easier with two.” “Hmm, I know something we can do with two.” “Oh, really, Mr. Grey?” “Yes, Mrs. Grey, and speaking of, I think you’ve forgotten a little rule we have about eye-rolling.” “Oh, dear.” Ana gave me her biggest eye roll yet. “Don’t you dare, Wench.” I tapped her ass, making her jump. “I think now that Teddy’s on formula, it’s time to have his grandparents babysit for a night.” “For the night? Where will we be?” “We will be at Escala,” I growled and kissed my wife. “You think they’re free tonight?” Ana laughed. “I think that you had a glass of wine or two with Kate, and I should get you to bed.” Ana laughed again as I picked her up and headed upstairs with her in my arms.
