Chapter 13
On the Path to Bright Light (Part II)
Etienne Chaques reminded much of a British butler, indeed, which was mainly caused by his formal appearance and the old fashioned tailcoat that fitted him extremely well, though. He greeted Seraphine and Erik most politely, smiling even at the twins in their arms as if he welcomed them in the same way.
"If you allow, Madame", a slight bow was performed in front of Seraphine, "I’d like to say that you look even more beautiful than the last time we met."
"Thank you, Monsieur."
"Please call me Etienne", he nodded his head instead of another bow, and she smiled in acceptance. Just by now, Erik noticed how unimpressed the man acted although he had expected him to be frightened by the white mask he wore today. Either Agatha had told him about her daughter’s lover and his secret identity, thus Erik’s appearance didn’t come as a surprise, or he truly didn’t care since it didn’t matter to him. In both ways it made Erik feel a great liking towards the man who lead them through the house Agatha had lived in once.
"As you see, nothing has been changed since your grandmother left us", Etienne explained when they entered the living room, motioning for them to take a seat, "May I bring you something? Tea perhaps?"
"Tea would be perfect, thank you", Seraphine replied with a smile and went to sit down next to Erik who was unsure whether to take a closer look at the room or watch Gabriel sleeping in his arms.
"It’s nice… I like the furniture."
"The way you say that sounds almost as if you’d like to use the furniture for something else", she laughed, reading his mind that imagined them both making love on one of the tables.
"It’s scary how much you know me, love", Erik grinned at her before returning into a serious state, "Honestly, I can imagine spending the rest of my life here. There’s only one more problem…"
"The Ducards."
"Exactly", he nodded, watching how Etienne entered the room with a tray in his hand. The elder man filled three cups with a strong smelling black tea, offered them sugar and milk and took a seat then himself.
"Do my parents know about Agatha’s last will?", Seraphine wanted to know.
"Yes and no, Madame", the unexpected answer came, "They do know that she left this house to someone, yet they know nothing about her second property. She owned it in secret, thus they are not aware of its existence, let alone its location. Should you wonder about them finding out – I am bound to a promise I gave Madame Pelléreau to never tell them. I have to be honest with you, though… it’s not possible to prevent the Ducards from coming here. Their home is not far away from this house and clearly they are curious about its new owner. If you allowed me a suggestion?"
Both Erik and Seraphine nodded to have the man continue.
"Madame Pelléreau’s other property is on the contrary countryside of Paris, about half an hour away from the town. It could be wise to sell this house which can be arranged by myself without giving away your identity."
"That means no one would notice if we moved into the other house?", Erik asked in interest, "What about the furniture?"
"Most parts of the second house are empty, Monsieur, but it’d be no problem to transport the furniture from here to it – unless you don’t wish to put your own furniture in it, of course."
"There are some items we would like to keep that are still in the house we used to live before, indeed", Erik admitted, describing Etienne the location in the forest.
"I will arrange anything that’s necessary, Monsieur, don’t worry."
When they left Agatha’s house shortly later, Seraphine passed Rachel on to Erik once he was in the carriage, and returned to Etienne who bowed his head in respect.
"I don’t mean to cause troubles", she started almost hesitantly, "but it seems as if you are familiar with loyal and discreet people. It may sound stupid, but…"
"Allow me to say that most stupid matters turn out to be easily solvable", Etienne encouraged her with a smile.
"I was just wondering if you were able to get something from the Opera as well."
"From the Opera or from beneath it?"
A smile appeared on Seraphine’s face when she realized how much the man knew about her and Erik.
"You do know who he really is, then?", she asked without glancing back at the carriage.
"I do, Madame. And I don’t intend to pass this knowledge on, just in case you are worrying."
"Thank you, Etienne", he smiled while giving a little wink, "You might know then as well that Erik loves music. He used to own an organ that most probably still stands at his home beneath the Opera. And although he’s been having a piano in the house in the forest, I know that it’s no substitute for a real organ. So I was wondering if it were possible to…"
"I’ve already arranged more complicated matters, Madame."
"I’ll send you a description of the paths you need to choose in the labyrinth beneath the Opera to find it, then. Don’t you fear it will be noticed when you move such a big organ out from there? I really don’t want you to get into troubles, Etienne."
"As I already said, there’ve been far more complicated matters, Madame. I assure you that the organ will be in your new home the day you move into it."
Strange how similar he was to Erik when it came to cryptic answers and mysterious ways of work, Seraphine thought to herself with a hidden grin.
They moved into their new home five days later, finding anything arranged by Etienne as he had promised. He was still in the middle of selling Agatha’s old house, but seemed most content with the money he expected to receive for it. Seraphine and Erik had only too willingly accepted his offer to stay at their house, thus regaining the most loyal butler even all of England couldn’t have found. Along with Etienne joining them in their new home, three servants – one cook among them – also moved in to make life easier. Erik would have never dreamt of enjoying the fact that there were people around him to do his every bidding. Yet after a couple of days he developed a great pleasure in simply dedicating himself to Seraphine and their children while others took care of whatever needed to be done in the house. The selling of Agatha’s former home brought them a nice amount of money additionally to the still high numbers of Francs Erik owned, however, as time moved on, he used to sell his compositions that earned quite a triumph all through the country although the composer remained unknown. Therefore they lived a happy, untroubled life with their twins that developed into charming children who above anything else never got into contact with any of the pain Erik had had to endure during his own childhood.
