Chapter 13
An elegant log cabin sat in a small clearing. A heart theme was present in this buildings décor with small hearts caved into the wood at measured intervals. The sun filtered down from the trees above making the place seem warm and inviting. A chair and small table sat out front and a tiny gravel path moved off to a large vegetable garden full to bursting with vegetables ready for harvesting. At the other side of the house was an elegant garden of the queens signature flower; red roses.
“It looks like this could be the right place.” Alice said to herself. “But where is the Maid of Hearts?”
As if to answer her question the front door opened and a woman stepped out. Immediately Alice thought that she had come to the wrong place; this was not the woman she knew as the Queen of Hearts. The woman looked only twenty-five years old, had long raven-black hair. Her features were soft, her eyes a sparkling green and she had full red lips. She was not the fat, fifty-ish, mean spirited monarch Alice had met. Clearly a lot of things had changed when she had lost her throne. The Maid was carrying a small pair of pruning sheers and a watering can. She glanced curiously at Alice as she stepped out onto the garden.
“Hello.” She said with a shining smile. She moved over to her rose bush and started to water it.
“Hello.” Alice said stepping over to the Maid. She watched for a few seconds as the woman clipped at a diseased branch. She didn’t seem to show any sign of recognising Alice, but that wasn’t much of an injustice since Alice barely recognised her. “Are you, the Maid of Hearts?” Alice felt she had to confirm this.
The Maid stopped her working on her rosebush and looked thoughtful for a second.
“No one has called me by me official title for a long time. I had almost forgotten. Yes, I am the Maiden of Hearts; emissary of Hearts to the royal court. But my name is Michelle. I would prefer you call me by my name; it’s less of a mouthful.”
Michelle snipped one of the roses from the bush and sniffed it deeply. She turned and smiled at Alice and handed the rose to her.
“And who might your be my pretty little lady? A messenger of the royal court? Do they require the presence of the Suite Maids once more?” She sounded almost hopeful. Alice had to watch Michelle’s face drop as she shook her head.
“I’m sorry. I’m not from the palace.” She did a little curtsy, Alice hadn’t understood some of the things Michelle had said, but she did pick up that she was in the presence of someone official in a royal capacity. “My name is Alice and I have travelled a long way to speak with you.”
Michelle continued to smile and placed her gardening equipment onto the ground.
“Please take a seat.” She indicated the chair and small table. “I’ll make some tea and we can talk properly.”
Alice sat on the chair, listening to Michelle pottering around inside. She didn’t know what could be said. She was told that without the sceptre of hearts she wouldn’t be able to convince Michelle of anything. The sceptre had been in her bag, which she had given to Chester Kat. He could be days, even weeks behind her. That was assuming He didn’t run into something with breasts and get distracted.
“I’ll have to bide my time.” She muttered to herself. “I just hope I can stay for a few days.”
Michelle came out of the cabin with a tray, a small teapot and two cups.
“I don’t entertain much.” Michelle admitted as she placed the tray onto the small table and disappeared back into the cabin. She emerged seconds later carrying a chair identical to the one Alice was sitting on. “So please excuse any etiquette I may have forgotten.”
Alice nodded and took the teapot, deciding to play mother and poor the tea. It was a strange colour, not the golden brown she associated with tea but a dull grey. The smell was familiar but it wasn’t any tea she had known.
“Mushroom tea. I grow them myself in the garden.” Michelle stated when she saw Alice looking at the liquid. Alice cast a glance over the young Maids shoulder and saw a small mushroom patch in the corner of the vegetable garden.
“So how did you come to be all the way out here? This place seems a little far from the palace.” Alice asked, she thought it would be good to get Michelle talking. Also it would be a good idea to collect information. Michelle took the cup of tea, for the first time since Alice had met her, her smile seemed to falter; only for a second.
“Sometimes I wonder myself. Wonderland is ruled, and always has been ruled, by the King and Queen of Spades. Wonderland is such a vast kingdom that they have split it into three districts ruled over by Lords and Ladies. They enforce the will and laws of the King and Queen in their districts. I worked for the Lord and Lady of Hearts. I used to be their ambassador within the palace.”
Alice nodded and understood. A similar system was set up in her world because of the vastness of the British Empire. What she found hard to believe was that Michelle seemed to have no idea of who she really was. She recalled how the story keeper said things had changed in wonderland when the queen of Spades had taken the throne. And that the people of wonderland never truly died, they were just reborn. With the role as queen taken Michelle had to be reborn as something, Alice didn’t understand how her entire history could be changed and suspected that perhaps she wasn’t in the presence of the former Queen of Hearts. There wasn’t much she could prove of disprove at this point and decided to wait until she could present Michelle with the sceptre of hearts.
“Then recently things changed.” Michelle said, continuing her story. “The Queen is young but the king is old; he cannot keep up with her desires. When she began to seek it from members of the court, including the royal Maids. She didn’t look to me; she didn’t get that chance. The King sealed off the court and sent away everyone the Queen would be interested in.”
“What about guards? Surely the palace is guarded.” Alice interrupted, if there were no guard’s things might be easier than anticipated. Michelle next sentence burst that bubble.
“The Queen wouldn’t lower herself to a common guard. That’s almost as bad as a peasant. No matter how strong her desires, it would have to be royalty or a member of the royal court.”
“Nice to know she has standards.” Alice muttered she took a deep gulp of her tea. It tasted odd, but not unpleasant.
“So with the palace closed off I came here and have been trying to keep myself busy until the call comes to return to the court.”
Alice began to feel funny; her head was light and her vision slightly blurred. She looked at Michelle and saw the excited look on her face.
“What was in that tea?” She gasped out. She glanced down and saw that Michelle hadn’t drunk a drop from her own cup. Alice fell from her chair and landed hard on the gravel.
“A powerful sleeping herb; among other things.”
To be continued.
