Chapter 13
-------------
Jarlaxle led the horses inside the tent after Artemis. The assassin, still perspiring heavily, lay down on the cloth floor of the tent, using his backpack as a pillow.
Jarlaxle came over and knelt down beside him. His emotions were swirling inside him. He'd lost the Crystal Shard, and almost his own life. He didn't want to lose Artemis, now. He pursed his lips and leaned over the assassin, examining how his wounds were healing. Jarlaxle took off Artemis' leather coat and his bloodstained tunic.
Artemis made an involuntary noise of pain and squinted up at him reproachfully. "What are you doing?"
Jarlaxle took out his healing orb. "What I no doubt shouldn't. Now lie still." He closed his eyes and chanted for a moment. Then he examined Artemis' deepest wound again with relief. It was completely scabbed over now.
"Thank you," Artemis whispered.
Jarlaxle scowled. "Don't thank me yet. I only healed you so I could get some answers out of you. Why did you attack me? Why did you then save me? What is your plan?"
Artemis shook his head, smiling. "I didn't attack you. I only made the Shard think I was for the sake of delaying the fight between myself and it. That way it couldn't use you as a body shield."
Jarlaxle sat there, stunned. "I don't understand."
"I saved you," Artemis said patiently, "because you weren't responsible for your own actions. The Shard was manipulating you. It brought Kimmuriel and Rai-guy against you, and led you to become estranged from your own organization."
"Those sound like reasons to let me die." Jarlaxle snorted.
"No," Artemis said. "They're reasons to live. Crenshinibon was becoming concerned. It didn't want you as a wielder anymore, so it brought in Kimmuriel and Rai-guy. You're too clever to be manipulated so successfully for long. Sooner or later you would figure it out, and then the artifact would be in mortal danger."
Jarlaxle frowned. "Either I'm weak-willed, or I'm strong-willed. You can't have it both ways."
Entreri sighed. "Just listen, will you?"
"Proceed."
"It probably knew its charade would be up as soon as Kimmuriel and Rai-gy came, because you would feel it coaxing them to take it from you. Then you would see that there would be no reasoning with it, no control, and you would destroy it."
"Why would I destroy something so valuable?" Jarlaxle asked.
Artemis scowled. "Because there is no way to use it without becoming its slave."
"I could find a way."
"You haven't yet."
Jarlaxle composed himself and tried to think. It occurred to him that though it had been over a month since Artemis had intimated they were anything but business partners, Artemis might still be interested in a sexual relationship. That would provide a strong enough motive to save the mercenary, even though he'd exhibited poor judgement and incompetence.
He looked at Artemis. "I suppose it would be too great a task to retrieve the Shard now, even if I did know of a way to bend it to my will."
Artemis nodded. His eyelids fluttered closed.
Jarlaxle held his healing orb over Artemis and began chanting again. He let this continue until the orb's power could do no more. He sighed and opened his eyes. Artemis was fully healed, shining scars in place of torn tissue, and the color was back in his face. He looked to be sleeping peacefully.
Jarlaxle stowed his orb and leaned close, until his mouth was almost touching Artemis' ear. "Artemis?"
Artemis stirred, but didn't open his eyes. "What is it?"
"I want you to know I appreciate the chance to live..."
"That's alright." It was clear that Artemis was mostly asleep. "I'm sure you would've done the same for me, anyway." He rolled onto his side.
Jarlaxle kissed him.
Artemis moaned. Then he reached up and folded both arms around Jarlaxle, pulling him down on top of him. Artemis kissed Jarlaxle in return.
Jarlaxle hadn't expected any response, much less an amorous one.
"Kiss me," Artemis whispered. "That felt...nice."
Jarlaxle recovered from his surprise and did as he was told.
Jarlaxle was sure they would have gotten much further if he hadn't carressed Artemis' side and found the Crystal Shard hidden in Artemis' pocket.
Jarlaxle beamed, reaching for it. "Clever man! I should've known you wouldn't let my lieutenants steal such a valuable -"
Artemis grabbed his wrist. He found Artemis looking up at him with wide eyes. "Don't. Do not. It will only take advantage of you again."
The Shard was singing to him. For a moment, he couldn't help himself. Then he reigned in his impulse and withdrew his hand. "Alright."
Artemis looked at him searchingly.
"I won't do anything," Jarlaxle said. "I promise." He backed away from Artemis, retreating to sit near the horses.
Artemis fell asleep.
Jarlaxle watched him with the first inkling of guilt he'd had since he was a small child.
