Laura awoke as a weight eased down onto the bed, and stiffened as an arm wrapped around her waist.
'You're awake?' he said softly.
'I am now,' she replied, sleep and tears making her voice husky.
She felt him sigh, his breath brushing against her hair. 'I feel I must apologize for what I said.'
'Oh?'
'I know you did not mean to offend me earlier, and I shouldn't have spoken to you the way I did,' he said softly.
Laura lay still another moment before turning to face him.
'I really didn't,' she said, searching his face in the dark.
'I know.'
'I'm sorry.'
'As am I.'
They made love again before falling asleep together.
Neither noticed the tiny glowing form outside the window.

The next few days passed quickly for Laura. Her nights were spent with Hook, her days on the ship with the crew. Hook had tried to order her to stay at his home during the day, but Laura pointed out that she was still technically a crew member, and should be at the ship.
The truth was Laura enjoyed being on the ship. She continued her lessons with Church, improving her swordsmanship (Church had refused to call it 'swords-person-ship'), and began to learn more about the crew and their families. Hook would often look down from the helm to see her sitting on a barrel, engaged in conversation with the man who was supposed to be carrying it.
She also felt safer on the ship, around the activity of the crew and the nearby town. Too often, the hair on the back of her neck would stand, and she could have sworn someone was watching her. Around the men, she was able to shake off the feeling. It was worse when she and Hook were at his home. She thought about mentioning it to him, but he too seemed to be increasingly unsettled about something.
One morning, Laura had just pulled her boots on when there was a knock at the door. She opened it to find Cecilia standing there, holding a large box.
'Madame finished it last night, and insisted I bring it right over,' the girl explained as Laura led her into the house.
'Finished what?'
Laura almost laughed at how the girl blanched as Hook entered the room. She placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder as she moved between them.
'None of your business, nosey,' Laura said, hoping her light tone would bring some color back into Cecilia's face. It wasn't working yet.
'You're having boxes brought into my home, and I'm not allowed to know what's in them?' Hook said, raising an eyebrow.
'You're allowed to know, Captain' Laura said, holding his gaze. 'Just not yet.'
'Perhaps I should ask the courier who delivered this package,' he said, turning his eyes to Cecilia, who somehow managed to pale further.
'You will not,' Laura said, moving in front of Cecilia. 'Pick on someone your own size,' she added lowly.
'Like you?' he asked, dropping his voice as he took a step towards her. Laura heard a quiet gasp Cecilia.
'Like later,' Laura said, nodding her head towards the girl behind her. 'We have company.'
They looked at each other a moment, realising this was the first time either of them had insinuated they were a plural 'we'. Laura was about to explain away the slip when Hook's lips twitched into a quick half-smile.
'Yes, we do,' he said, taking a step back. 'Shall we continue this discussion on the way to the Jolly Roger?'
Cecilia let out a little squeak. 'Madame wanted Miss Laura to try on the-'
'-thing in the box,' Laura finished. 'Why don't you go on and I'll meet you there?'
Hook frowned. 'Very well. I will send Smee here to escort you to the ship. Do not leave without him.'
Laura rolled her eyes. 'I'll be fine. Cecilia made it all the way here on her own.'
Hook regarded the other girl for a moment. 'Then I shall send Church as well, so you are both properly escorted.'
Both women opened their mouths to protest, but stopped at his raised Hook.
'You will wait here for your escorts. Understood?'
Cecilia dropped a curtsey and mumbled her thanks while Laura walked over and placed her hands against his chest.
'Fine. I'll see you later?'
'You will indeed,' Hook said before giving her a hard, quick kiss. She smiled as he gave her a quick smirk before heading out the door.
'Men,' Laura started as she turned to face a very pale Cecilia. 'God! Are you ok? You're not going to faint, are you?' she asked with concern.
Cecilia silently shook her head, her eyes glued to the door. 'I've....I've...never met....the Captain.'
'Yeah, he's something, right?' Laura said, gently taking Cecilia's elbow. 'But he's not that bad. I mean, he can be, but really he's...' Laura ended with a sigh. 'How about a drink of water?'
Cecilia seemed to calm down after a drink, and soon she was helping Laura into Madame Miranda's latest creation.
'It's gorgeous,' Laura said breathlessly as Cecilia laced the back of the dress. Laura could hardly recognize herself in the mirror. She had chosen the ice blue silk because it reminded her of her first encounter with Hook, but she had no idea it would create such a stunning gown. The neckline was square but low enough to show the tops of her breasts. The off-the-shoulder sleaves were tipped with long pearls, as was the hem of the gown. The skirt was full, although now it hung straight down from the lack of a petticoat.
'Tell Madame I love it,' Laura said.
'You look beautiful,' Cecilia said shyly.
'Thanks,' Laura smiled. 'And as much as I'd like to flounce around in it all day, I better get to the ship before he has me swabbing the deck.'
Laura had just stepped out of the dress when she heard the explosion. She and Cecilia both ducked instinctively.
'What the hell was that?' Laura cried.
'The canon,' Cecilia said, her eyes wide with fear.
Laura ran to the window and threw it open, Cecilia right behind her. In the distance they could hear shouts and gunfire.
'Pan,' Cecilia breathed, the color leaving her face for the second time that day.
'James,' Laura whispered. She turned and ran down the stairs.
'Miss Larua!' Cecilia cried as she ran after her. 'Where are you going?'
'To the ship,' Laura said as she flung the door open.
'You can't!' Cecilia said, catching Laura by the arm.
'I have to!' Laura said, jerking from Cecilia's grasp.
'Wait!' Cecilia said as she dashed back into the house, only to return the next second with Laura's cloak.
'You can't go like that,' she said quietly, looking at Laura's bare feet and shift.
'Thanks,' Laura said earnestly as she threw the cloak around her shoulders. 'You stay here, okay?'
Laura didn't wait for a reply as she ran towards the ship, using a secret path that Hook had shown her that lead through the woods and to the dock. A part of her registered the rocks that bit into her feet and the branches that slapped at her. But her focus was on the sounds of a battle coming from the Jolly Roger.
She was out of breath when she reached the dock, but she forced herself up the gangplank and onto the ship. All around her the crew were fighting with what looked like little boys. She scanned the melee and saw Church near the railing fighting with a skinny boy who looked a head shorter than his opponent. She ran to them, picking up a water jug as she went.
Without slowing, she hit the boy on the head and threw her shoulder into him and he went over the railing.
'My thanks,' Church panted. 'But what are you-'
'Where's James?' she interrupted.
'I don't know,' Church started, 'but I don't think-'
'Don't care,' she stated, scanning the battle already.
'Take this,' Church said as he held a sword out to her.
'Thanks,' she said. And they both went into the fray.
She headed towards the helm, fending off blows but not stopping. She couldn't believe her eyes when she reached the top of the stairs.
Hook, dressed in his crimson velvet coat, was engaged in a sword fight with...
'Peter Pan?' Laura whispered. Every Peter Pan Laura had seen had been blonde and imp like, mischevous. But the boy fighting her lover looked nothing like his movie portrayals. His wirey frame covered by only a brown loin cloth, with the same type of material wrapped around his feet and bound with twine. His black hair hung in dirty clumps around his face. Laura gasped at the wild and vicious expression that twisted the boy's features.
Suddenly, Hook's eyes snapped at her. She saw the surprise in his eyes just before Pan took advantage of the distraction. Letting out a snarl, he landed the sword handle to Hook's temple. As Hook fell, he hit his head on a nearby crate and lay still on the deck.
'NO!' Laura screamed, running towards him. Her voice rang out over the brawl, which immediatly stopped as the boys and men looked around. A few near the helm crept halfway up the stairs to see Laura and Peter Pan facing each other.
Pan stood, sword at the ready. Laura raised her sword, her eyes flying between the still form of Hook, to Pan's shining blade.
But Pan was not attacking. He looked puzzled as he stared at her.
'Mary?' he asked, tilting he head like a curious puppy.
'Stop this,' Laura said.
Pan looked taken aback. 'What?'
'Stop this right now!' She said with all the forcefulness she had.
'Why?' he asked, narrowing his eyes. Laura had the distinct feeling she was begin tested.
'Because...' she stopped, thinking furiously. 'Because, if you don't I shall be very cross!' She stood straighter as she finished and tried to look very stern.
Pan looked at her for a moment and dropped his sword to his side.
'Will you come back with me?' he asked, and Laura's heart twisted at how pleading his voice sounded. She lowered her sword and glanced at Hook.
Pan saw her hesitation. He crossed his arms. 'You will come back with me!' he demanded, stomping his foot.
Laura looked back at Pan and nodded. 'I'll come back with you. But we go now.'
A triumphant smile broke across the boy's face and he leaped onto the railing and looked down on the pirates and boys.
'Lost Boys!' he shouted. 'We return to our home with a new mother!' A cry went up as the boys ran off the ship, leaving the pirates looking questioningly at each other.
'Do you fly?" Pan asked as he jumped off the railing and faced Laura.
'What? No,' she said, moving towards Hook.
Pan let out an aggravated sigh. 'Fine. We'll walk then,' he said as he started down the stairs.
Laura dashed to Hook's side, her stomach turning at the small pool of blood by his head. She searched for a pulse and was instantly relieved to find it still strong.
'Come on!' Pan cried impatiently from the stairs.
Taking a last look, she arose and followed Pan down the stairs. He sneered at the pirates around them, knowing the wouldn't attack with the girl so near.
Church was by her side as soon as she was off the stairs.
'What are you doing?' he hissed into her ear.
'What I have to do,' she hissed back. 'You have to go to the house. Cecilia is there. Make sure she's ok. James is unconcious at the helm. Tell him to give me a week before looking for me. I have a plan.'
'He won't want to wait.'
'I know,' she replied. 'Just tell him what I said. And tell him I-' she cut herself off and her step faltered as she turned to Church. He caught her arm to steady her, and she looked into his eyes. 'John, tell him I'll be back. No matter what.'
'I'll tell him,' he said, squeezing her arm and then letting her go.
The crew watched as she followed Peter Pan into the woods.
