Recap: After being rescued by Captain Hook, Laura Astbury settles into a life amongst pirates, becoming the lover of James Hook. Her peace is broken when Peter Pan attacks the Jolly Roger. To save her captain, she agrees to go with Pan and the Lost Boys. As always, I don't own anything except for Laura, and forgive any errors you may find.
Hook awoke with a pounding headache. His eyes protested the light as he tried to open his eyes and sit up.
"Easy, Cap'n," he heard Smee say as a gentle hand wrapped around his arm to help him sit up. He shook it off angrily and forced himself to look around at his crew. His anger boiled again at their concerned expressions.
"What are you lot looking at?" he growled. "Where's Pan?"
"He's left, Cap'n," Smee said. The crew shifted uneasily.
A sudden memory flashed in Hook's mind. He grabbed a fistful of Smee's shirt and pulled him closer. "Was Laura here? Where is she?"
Smee opened his mouth and closed it a few times like a fish gulping for air. A voice from the crew saved him from answering.
"She's gone."
Shoving Smee aside, Hook hauled himself to his feet, careful not to let the wave of nausea the movement caused show to his men. "Gone? Gone where?"
Church stepped out of the crowd. "She went with Pan," he said. "She went to save you," he added softly at the end.
Now it was Church's shirt Hook grabbed, although this time is was as much to stay upright as it was to intimidate. "What do you mean she went with Pan?"
"Pan was going to kill you," Church said evenly, meeting the fierce gaze of the captain. "She agreed to go with him if he spared you. She said to wait a week before-"
"Wait a week?" Hook scoffed. "The girl has no idea-"
"She said she'd come back," Church interrupted softly. "She said she'd be back no matter what." He watched as the battle raged behind the captain's eyes, fear struggling with anger. Then the blue froze over.
"Smee," Hook said with a voice like cold steel. "Gather the men. Ready the weapons. In a week, we go to war."
******************************************************************************
For a while, Laura tried to keep track of their path through the forest. But she felt the path closing behind her as the walked, the trees making it darker and darker. Her heart was still pounding and as the adrenaline wore off, fear settled deep in her stomach, making her feel sick and empty.
"Smooth, Astbury," she grumbled to herself as she disentangled her cloak from a briar patch yet again. What was she thinking? Surely Hook had tried to find Pan's hideout before, and obviously couldn't. So why would he be able to find her now if her plan didn't work? And what the hell kind of plan was it anyway?
"And why the hell won't you stay where I can see you?" she cried out loud in frustration at Pan, who had disappeared again into the canopy. She shivered at the peal of laughter that answered.
She continued on, following the shadow cast against the green leaves above her. A while later, she heard the roar of rushing water, and soon she found herself along the edge of a river that ran over the side of a ledge in a huge water fall.
"Now what?" she called out, turning around and staring at the sky. Suddenly, Pan was beside her. She jumped back, and his smile widened. She could smell him against the clean air of the river, dark like the forest, and sweaty like a little boy that refuses to take a bath. He pointed to the edge.
"Down," he said.
"Down where?" she asked, foreboding twisting her stomach into a tighter knot.
"Down," he said again with more impatience. He grabbed her wrist and started dragging her towards the waterfall.
"What? No!" she cried, struggling against his grasp. "I told you I can't fly!"
"Don't have to," he said, reaching the side of the cliff. He released her and pointed to a smooth stone at the water's edge. Eyeing him warily, she edged closer and looked over. The rock continued down the edge of the mountain, scooped and twisted like a slide, and disappeared into the spray of the waterfall.
"You've got to be kidding me!" she said loudly so he could hear her over the roar of the water.
Pan just smiled again and shook his head, pointing at the rock. When she made no move, he gave an exasperated sigh, and pushed her towards the edge.
"I'm going, I'm going," she yelled. She inched towards the side, and then sat down. She scooted herself to the top of the slide.
"Fuck," she said. Just before Pan shoved her between the shoulder blads, and down she went.
Back home, she loved roller coasters. The higher and faster the better. She loved the excuse to scream and squeal as the metal contraption twisted and dived. And she always felt more alive when it was over.
However, she hated water slides. They were always too open, without harnesses and lapbars, and screaming alone in a fiberglass tube was never as satisfying as screaming with 10 other people.
This water slide was no different, and the scream that tore from her throat was not of thrilled glee, but of abject terror. Her eyes grew wider as she went into the cloudy mist created by the water fall. Her mind filled with the memories of driving across the tall bridges of Charleston that vanished into fog, and the irrational fear that there was nothing beyond the fog and she fall into some void when she crossed into it. But here, that fear seemed very rational.
She was somewhat relieved to break through to the other side, but relief disappated into dread when she saw she was to land on nothing but the rounded pebbles at the river's edge. She braced herself for impact, and landed feet first, but her momentum kept pushing her upper body. Her hands and knees crashed against the small stones, jarring every inch of her.
She stayed there, panting, her throat raw from screaming the entire way down. She heard the crunching of feet upon rocks and looked up. A dozen boys stood around her, looking at her with stares that varied from wonder to distrust. The boys looked up at the sky, and stepped back as Pan landed gracefully among them.
"Lost Boys," he said proudly, hands on his hips. "Our mother has returned."
AN: Nope, I haven't died or given up on this story. But I'm getting ready to make a big move, which includes buying a house. I'm also presenting at a Harry Potter convention (my dorkdom knows no bounds!) and so have been working on a paper for that. I also had no inspiration for this chapter, until today. I have this story outlined in my head, and promise to get it out as quickly as possible. Maybe this will kickstart my muse.
Thanks to those who have reviewed. I continue only in the hopes that you will not be disappointed.
Thanks for reading.
