:) I'm glad y'all like this.
Carlisle met us in the lobby.
“Tell me why you called me down here. You said it was urgent. You’re lucky I’m not busy at the moment,” the doctor admonished. Edward stepped forward to whisper in his ear.
“Whitaker forgot what happened. He’s convinced his grandfather is alive and just out for a walk behind the house,” he explained. Carlisle’s face was grim when he looked at me.
“Come with me, then.”
We walked down to a lower level. There were walls of shiny metal drawers in a room that smelled of formaldehyde and other pungent chemicals.
“Come here, Whitaker,” Carlisle commanded, leading me to one of the lower drawers. “Are you ready?”
“It won’t be him. It couldn’t be,” I predicted. His brow furrowed in concern, but he opened the drawer anyway. I looked down skeptically.
My heart stopped at what I saw. I reached my hand to touch the shoulder of…my grandfather. My hand was shaking, I belatedly noticed.
“I’m sorry I snapped at you,” I managed to whisper. Jasper seemed to understand I was talking to him. His hand wrapped around my outstretched one and pulled me to his chest. I felt numb. I still couldn’t remember finding him, but Edward and Jasper hadn’t been lying to me. I couldn’t cry; I was in shock, and the tears wouldn’t come. “I’m sorry I didn’t believe you.”
“Let’s get you home,” he murmured. I only nodded. “I’m taking you to our house for now.” He looked to Carlisle, who nodded. “Let’s go get you some things.” I silently followed, still numb.
Jasper did most of the packing for me while I drifted through the house, like a lost soul looking for a resting place. Edward had dropped us off since Jasper’s car was still at my house.
I caught Jasper’s concerned glances in my direction as I wandered.
As I made my way down the hall, I felt cold hands grab me around the waist and pull me backwards.
“Don’t go in there,” Jasper whispered in my ear. “It will only make you feel worse.” He led me away from Gramps’ room and sat me on my bed. “I’m almost done. Is there anything in particular you’d like to take?”
I nodded and went to my closet. I reached into a plastic tub and pulled out a rather large, worn, cream colored teddy bear. I hugged it to my chest and turned around.
“A teddy bear?” Jasper asked. He seemed incredulous. I only hugged my Scruffball tighter, hiding my face against its old fur. Jasper stepped forward and kissed the top of my head. “I wasn’t making fun of you. Did he give it to you?”
I nodded. “When I was little.” He picked up the bags he had loaded, along with his own, and guided me out of the house I had known for a long time, but only lived in recently. It felt strange to leave, but the rational part of me knew it was necessary.
At the Cullen house, I was led upstairs to a bedroom painted dark blue. I saw a queen-sized bed covered with a striped bedspread. There was also a black couch along the wall. I sat on the couch.
“I assume you want to take a shower. The bathroom is over there.” He pointed to a door on the opposite side of the room. “Call me if you need anything.” His eyes appeared to be almost black, but that couldn’t be. My tired brain was playing tricks on me.
I didn’t immediately take a shower, but I ended up in the bathroom eventually. As I stood, letting the warm water wash over me, I had a flashback of doing the same the night before. Everything seemed identical, except I was crying. From there, the memory flooded back. I staggered from the weight of my realization. I quickly shut off the water and toweled off. I had to tell Jasper of my remembrances.
Jasper was waiting for me in his room. He silently held open his arms when he saw me. It was like he knew how I was feeling and only wanted to be there for me.
“I remember,” I gasped.
“I know,” he murmured.
“I found him.”
“I know.”
“He’s not coming back.”
“I know, but I’ll help you through this, love.” He hugged me tightly. “I’m here for you, whatever you need.”
“Just like last night?”
“…Yes, just like last night.”
“Because I needed it then.” He kissed my hair.
“I know. Let’s get you something to eat.”
“I’m not hungry.”
“You need to eat.” I sighed and followed him out of his room.
Emmett was downstairs in the kitchen.
“Where is everybody else?” I asked.
“Bella is spending time with her dad, so Carlisle decided to take everyone out hu… H-hey Whitaker,” Emmett stammered when he turned to see me. Confused, I just stared at him.
“Then why are you here?”
“I…didn’t want to go.”
“Oh.” Jasper appeared beside me with a grilled cheese sandwich. “You move fast…”
“I already had it made.” I nodded and ate quickly.
I yawned when I finished. I felt drained, both physically and emotionally, though I had done nothing physical that day. Jasper scooped me up.
“Where’re we going?” I sleepily mumbled.
“Bed.”
“Don’t be too loud,” Emmett called after us. Jasper sent a glare back in his direction, but Emmett only laughed.
So? What do you think?
Gaps of Misery--Not lazy. To be honest, I'm surprised I've been writing so much. I know the chapters are short, but still... Anyway, I'm glad it was realistic. :) About the character...I had figured on a female OC, but I wanted you to describe somebody. Name, description, past...anything! ;) And it's not humble when I ask for it. -lol-
KaieAithne--I updated! -lol- I love Jasper, too. :) I really am glad you like this.
