The entire Cullen family, minus Edward, stood in the small clearing Alice had seen in her vision. Edward, of course, was with Bella in Florida. “It’s almost time,” Alice said to her family as the sun began to set. “When I saw her, it was just starting to get dark.”
As if on cue a flash of red ran past them. The Cullens gave chase, the trees flying by in a blur. Victoria was ready for them though, and she wouldn’t be caught easily. Liam almost had her when she crossed into Quileute territory. It was almost like she’d planned it.
What she didn’t plan on was the fact that the wolf pack was waiting. They’d been let in on things via a note taped to Sam’s door. It baffled and scared the wolves that Liam seemed so adept at slipping in and out of their territory mostly unnoticed.
Sam wasn’t sure whether this was a trap or not. It was at Jacob’s insistence that they finally decided to go along with the plan. He didn’t think the Cullens would do something like lay a trap for them. While they were vampires, his dream visitor was right: they kept to the treaty.
The pack took over the chase when Victoria crossed the river. Liam didn’t stop with the rest of his family though. They and the wolves were supposed to be sharing territory, and he’d be damned if he was going to let this bitch get away.
Paul didn’t take Liam’s trespass well. The sight of a leech on his territory sent him into a rage. He forgot all about Victoria and turned on Liam. Liam was taken by surprise, but fought back viciously. He lifted Paul effortlessly into the air and slammed him into a nearby tree, knocking it crooked. Paul whirled around and tried to bite Liam but barely scratched him before the vampire sank his teeth into Paul’s shoulder and bit out a sizable chunk.
Paul phased back into human form; blood gushed from his wound while he writhed in pain. “Oh god, it burns!”
The rest of the pack gathered around and Carlisle rushed over. Liam glared down at Paul, but halted his attack for the moment. “I thought you said they were immune to us,” he said to Carlisle.
“I said I thought they were,” Carlisle growled as he knelt down to examine Paul. “There’s a difference. Give me your shirt.”
“But—”
“Now!” With a sigh of protest Liam took off his gray sweatshirt and handed it over, and Carlisle used it to put pressure on the wound. “I guess we’ll find out by tomorrow afternoon.”
“I thought it took three days,” Sam said, still trying to decide what to do about the situation.
“Normally, yes,” Carlisle answered. “But my brother was changed by an ancient, so he’s a little more…potent.”
Jacob could only stand there and stare. Much to his horror, he’d found himself very turned on watching Liam’s savage attack on Paul. There was no question in Jacob’s mind that Paul deserved it. That hothead was constantly getting himself in trouble. Unfortunately, it wasn’t quite so clear to the rest of the pack.
“Sorry about Paul,” Jacob mumbled. “He just—”
Liam gave Jacob a small smile. “I know. He acted before he thought.”
Sam scowled. “You didn’t have to bite him. I swear, if he turns into one of you….”
“Then it’s his own stupid fault,” Liam snapped back. “I defended myself.”
Carlisle pulled Liam back. “This is new for all of us. Paul should be fine. Let’s just keep it civil, all right?”
“I almost had her!” Liam whined. “If it weren’t for this childish jackass—”
Jacob laughed in spite of himself. “What?” he said when Sam glared at him. “He’s cute when he—I mean, seeing a vampire whine is kind of funny.”
“You are acting so strange lately.” Sam shook his head. “Come on, let’s go.” He picked Paul up off the ground and started carrying him back to the reservation. Paul’s jaw was clenched and he was still whimpering, but he seemed a little better.
Jacob caught Liam’s gaze before he turned and followed the pack. He’d almost said out loud that Liam was cute when he pouted. It was true, but that wasn’t something he wanted to say in front of his packmates. Tensions were still too high to spring his feelings for a leech on them.
When Bella returned she found out about Victoria, much to Edward’s displeasure. Jacob decided a surprise visit to her school that Monday morning was in order. Bella was happy to see him but was not so thrilled about the tension between Jacob and Edward. It did brighten her day when Jacob said he still wanted to be friends. The only problem was being able to see him. She badly wanted to see Jacob again, but Edward had pretty much forbidden it. She’d tried to sneak out a few times while he wasn’t there, but somehow Alice was always alerted and the Cullens always stopped her. It was starting to seem impossible to have any time alone with Jacob.
Then one weekend she ordered Edward to go hunt with his brothers. That was pretty much what it took to get him to leave her anymore; not that she was complaining, for the most part. He needed to hunt; she just wasn’t sure how she would last the weekend without him.
The minutes seemed to drag on that morning before she had to leave for work. She was eventually reduced to straightening up the house for something to do. She was grateful for the distraction work provided. Unfortunately, when she got there Mrs. Newton told her it was a slow day and they didn’t need her.
On her way back out to the parking lot, Bella started thinking. Alice was still nearby, but as far as anyone knew, Bella was at work. It was only a fifteen-minute drive to La Push. Could she make it before Alice had another vision? Maybe snap decisions were the key. If she just hopped in her truck and pushed it as fast as it would go….
But before she could do that a purple BMW hatchback pulled into the parking lot with Liam Cullen behind the wheel. Bella groaned in frustration. At this point Jacob was going to think she didn’t want to be friends any more.
Liam came to a stop and rolled down his window. “Thought you might like a ride,” he smiled.
“A ride home, right?” she frowned.
“Don’t be silly,” he snorted. “I was thinking La Push, but you’d never make it in your bucket of bolts. Alice would intercept you.”
Bella didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. “Is this some sort of joke?”
“Nope. I was in the area, and something told me you needed a ride.”
“In the area? Really?” Bella said in a disbelieving tone.
Liam laughed. “Did you honestly think Edward would leave you completely unmonitored for even a second? You naïve child.” he shook his head. “Are you going to get in, or what?”
Bella knew better than to look a gift horse in the mouth, so she climbed into the passenger seat and fastened her seatbelt. “Is this yours?” she asked.
“Yep. It’s both pretty and practical.”
The rest of the ride was quiet. Bella had no idea what to say. Liam was helping her behind Edward’s back, and while she appreciated it, Edward was probably right in thinking Liam had an ulterior motive. What other feasible explanation was there? Up until now Liam had seemed very protective of his family and loyal to a fault. This was a whole other side to him.
Jacob rushed out the door as soon as they pulled into the driveway. Liam got out first. “I come bearing gifts.”
Jacob looked confused for a minute, but then he saw Bella. “Bells!” he cried as he rushed over and scooped her up into a bear-hug. “I missed you so much.”
“Missed you, too.” Bella blushed when he let her down.
Then Jacob turned to Liam. “So, are you her elected escort, or something?” he asked with a scowl.
“In a way,” Liam answered. “I escorted her right past Alice. Edward is gone for the weekend, so he has no idea we’re here. He’ll be furious if he ever finds out and will probably attack me again, but I can handle him.”
The words hovering on the tip of Jacob’s tongue died. He had no idea what to say. Liam was yet again betraying his own family to make him happy. Liam broke the silence. “You’re welcome, again.”
Jacob flung himself into Liam’s arms with a soft grunt. Liam was startled by the sudden movement, but soon relaxed and seemed quite content to hold Jacob tightly against him. They stood like that for several minutes and Bella watched them in disbelief, her jaw practically on the ground.
“Bella, you might want to head out to the beach ahead of us,” Liam said.
“Why?” she asked curiously.
“Ummm…just trust me on this one,” Liam replied, grinning inwardly at the sensation of a sizable erection pressing against his belly.”
“I’m right behind you, Bells,” Jacob assured her.
“Okay.” Bella sighed and headed toward the beach.
Jacob pulled back when she was gone. “Why can’t I stay away from you?”
Liam shrugged. “Probably because you weren’t meant to.” He glanced down to the bulge in Jacob’s pants. “Do you really want to?”
“I used to think so, but now I’m not so sure,” Jacob admitted. “This would be so much easier if you were human. You should have died and been recycled with me.”
“But I didn’t. I did something stupid, and now I’m paying for it, but I’m still me.”
“I still need time, okay?”
“Could I at least make a proposal?”
Jacob thought about it for a minute. “All right, what do you propose?”
Liam glanced toward the beach. “I think it’s safe to say that if you end up not wanting me, you’ll want her. Right now she’s preoccupied with Edward, and you’re her backup plan. She was really worried for a while there, but you’ve proven you can’t stay away from her any more than Edward can.”
“What’s your point?” Jacob asked, starting to lose patience. He didn’t like being reminded that he was playing second fiddle to a vampire.
“If you want to see how she really feels about you, show her you won’t wait around forever. Start seeing me. Keep it a secret from your dad and pack, of course, but tell her. You no longer being available will force her to face her feelings. If she really cares for you, she might just leave Edward.”
“And if she doesn’t?”
Liam shrugged. “At least you’ll have tried. It can’t be any worse than doing nothing. No offense to her—I like her and all—but I think she’ll string you along for as long as she can. And you’ll get to know me in the process. At the end of it all, if you still don’t want me you’ll never hear from me again.”
Jacob could hardly believe what he was hearing. “You would help me get Bella to break up with Edward? He’s your nephew!”
Liam laughed. “Adopted nephew. I do care for him because he’s technically family, but I’m only truly loyal to Carlisle and you. Don’t you get it? Your happiness matters to me a great deal.”
Jacob was quiet while he let it all sink in. “I’m going to have to think about that one. My friends and family are a major part of what makes this so complicated. My dad would disown me if he ever found out.”
“Take all the time you need. Now, go visit with Bella. I’ll give you two some privacy. I just need to have her back at the hardware store by four.”
Jacob nodded and took off toward the beach. Bella was waiting at the usual spot. “What was all that with Liam?” she asked.
Jacob froze and blushed furiously. “I was just really happy. That’s twice now he’s helped bring us closer together.”
“Yeah, I can’t figure him out. I’m not complaining or anything, but I wonder what he wants.”
“You think he wants something?”
“I’m pretty sure, yes. The more I learn about him, the more complex he seems to become. How is Paul, by the way?”
Jacob knew exactly what Liam wanted, but Jacob hadn’t decided if he was going to get it or not. “They told you about that? What did they tell you, exactly?”
“Not much. Just that you were all hunting Victoria and Liam crossed what used to be the territory line. Paul lost his temper and attacked. They fought, and Paul got bit.”
“I see. He’s still feeling a little ill, but he’s alive, fortunately for them.”
“Why do you have to do that? It was Paul who lost his temper, just like he does practically every other day. He picked a fight he couldn’t finish, for once. Jacob, once this truce is over will you still want to be my friend?”
Jacob put his hand on Bella’s shoulder and gazed into her eyes. “I want to say yes, but I really don’t know.”
“Why?” She jerked away angrily.
“Because you’re in love with a monster.”
“And what are you?”
“That’s different.”
“How? You morph into a giant wolf.”
“Yeah, but that’s in my blood. Vampires aren’t natural! They’re…walking corpses. They kill to survive.”
“But the Cullens don’t kill people. They kill animals, which isn’t much different than having a steak for dinner. And it’s not like they asked for this.”
Jacob shook his head. If only she had a clue. She was actually arguing Liam’s point for him. “I have a lot to think about, all right? Let’s not waste what time we do have arguing.” Bella nodded and changed the subject, and they talked about mundane things like school and just enjoyed each other’s company.
Jacob found it hard to concentrate though. There was way too much on his mind. Before he knew it, Liam was motioning for Bella because it was time to leave.
Bella wrapped her arms around Jacob and inhaled his scent deeply. “Don’t be a stranger, okay? You come see me next time. Edward can’t stop you.”
Jacob couldn’t take his eyes off Liam. His kind were immune to vampire charms, and yet, Liam Cullen was irresistibly beautiful. It would be all too easy to forget he was a monster. “Yeah, maybe I’ll do that.”
