Over the next few days, Wendy refused to leave Peter’s side. They remained in their teepee, cooing over their little girl. Wendy suggested (and Peter nodded his approval) they name her Lily, for Tiger Lily had saved all of their lives. Wendy looked down at her daughter and stroked her head. “I wish we knew what your mother’s name was. Lily still needs a middle name.” Peter quickly scribbled on the scrap of parchment he had been using to communicate. Isn’t your middle name Moira…who is that? “My great-grandmother. And Angela was my grandmother. My mother’s middle name is Gwendolyn.” She let out a little gasp. “Oh Peter! Lily Gwendolyn Pan.” Peter’s smile widened when he heard the name and he kissed her in reply, then stroked his daughter’s cheek. There was a little knock at the door and Wendy went to open the flap and welcomed Tiger Lily in. She had come to visit several times thus far, checking on Peter and stopping to admire the baby. Wendy was delighted to tell her they had finally chosen a name and Tiger Lily actually bowed her head in honor. “Wendy-bird and Peter Pan are kind. Tiger Lily is much honored.” “We wouldn’t be here without you, Tiger Lily,” Wendy said, squeezing the girl’s hand. “We are happy we can help. We are also happy to rid Neverland of James Hook.” Peter swallowed and sat up, wanting to speak but Wendy, who could almost read Peter’s thoughts, asked the question instead. “Did you kill him?” “James Hook gets what he deserves. Neverland is free of him.” Tiger Lily turned and called to someone outside the tent, who entered carrying something in a buckskin bag. The Indian handed it to Tiger Lily who passed it to Peter. Looking apprehensive, Peter reached into the bag and withdrew his hand very quickly, looking shocked. He would have yelled if he were able. For there in the bottom of the bag was Captain Hook’s steel hook he had used to torment so many people for so long. Wendy gasped and turned away, looking sick. “Oh how dreadful.” Even Peter, who usually would have celebrated at his enemy’s defeat, looked sick as he closed the bag and handed it back to Tiger Lily. She set the bag down and sat down next to Peter to remove the cloth from his neck and examine his wounds. Wendy still grimaced when she saw the deep slash in his throat; it was a real miracle he was still with them. Tiger Lily had explained to them both earlier that the wound was so close to his vocal chords; Peter may never speak again. But Peter was used to challenges; in fact, he relished them. So he didn’t think any differently of this one and was determined to overcome that particular challenge. Besides, how was he supposed to tell his daughter tales of the Lost Boys and teach her how to crow and explain to her what it took to fly? No, Peter was determined he would beat Hook, as he always had. He still had Wendy’s love, despite all of Hook’s attempts to crush his spirit and he was still alive, despite Hook’s hook. He could overcome this. He knew he could. Tiger Lily spread some kind of oil on his injury, which caused it to smoke and sting a bit. “Peter Pan is healing well. Medicine Man’s magic does wonders. So does love of Wendy-bird,” she glanced up at Wendy and smiled. Peter, too, looked up into her eyes and was lost in her adoration. How lucky he was! He had spent so many years as a carefree little boy flying around Neverland all day—now he got to grow up and experience life with the most wonderful young woman he had ever met. Not only that, he got to raise that beautiful little girl he had helped to create. As far as he was concerned, Lily was no accident. She had been conceived in passion and love and in light—Peter was determined to put the darkness behind him. The nightmares and visions would soon go away, he thought, and he would start a whole new life with Wendy. That, of course, meant leaving Neverland and although he was more than ready to begin his life with her, he knew how difficult it would be to say goodbye to his magical kingdom in the sky. So even though he was in pain and couldn’t speak, he enjoyed his remaining days with the Indians and took to walking around outside. Wendy, on the other hand, wanted to stay in the tent with Lily. Even though she had seen the hook herself, she didn’t know if she believed that Hook was gone. He still haunted her nightmares. He probably always would. Peter tried to calm her at night but they had just been through too much; Wendy worried constantly that her paranoia would ruin Lily’s life. On their tenth night in the Indian village, Tiger Lily invited them to a feast. Wendy didn’t really want to go but Peter looked excited so she swallowed her doubts and followed him, Lily asleep in her arms. Tiger Lily had given them both beautiful new outfits of deerskin and rabbit fur. The dress even had a bit of a train to it. Wendy stared at Peter as he dressed, thinking he looked very handsome and youthful in his new clothes. She often watched him for signs of change; she was terrified now that they were free of Hook, he would change his mind about growing up and decide to stay in Neverland. The thought tormented her more than the thought of Hook did. Tiger Lily stood to welcome Peter and Wendy into the circle as the warriors danced behind them. She held something in her hand, a kind of woven band with feathers and beads. It was a beautiful thing and Wendy was shocked when Tiger Lily held it out for her. “For you, Wendy-bird.” “Oh Tiger Lily, I couldn’t take that…you have already given us so much.” “Then let us give this too.” Ignoring Wendy’s protests, Tiger Lily set the band on Wendy’s hair and fashioned it to look like a halo. She then spread some thick paint on Wendy’s eyelids and lips, making her look more grown up and very beautiful. Peter could only stare at her; this young woman was so beautiful and so good and she was all his. Tiger Lily smiled down at Lily and gently rubbed her head. “Wendy-bird is so blessed. Has beautiful baby girl and the love of the Prince of Neverland.” Wendy glanced over at Peter, who was staring at her with a broad smile on his face. Wendy returned the smile and watched the Indians dance around. Tiger Lily passed around plates of delicious looking food and Wendy, feeling her stomach rumbling, realized how hungry she was. Peter scooted closer to her and held out his hands to take Lily. Wendy gently placed her in his arms and could only smile as she watched him look upon her with tenderness. Lily rolled turned her head into Peter’s chest and her tiny hand grasped his finger. His smile broadened even more and the sight brought tears to Wendy’s eyes. He leaned over and nuzzled her neck. “You look beautiful tonight,” he whispered in her ear. Her eyes widened and her hands went to his face. “You’re talking again!” He smiled and held up his fingers to indicate ‘a little bit’.
The people of London would have said it wasn’t a proper wedding but to Wendy and Peter, it was the most perfect night they had ever had. John held Lily while the Indian Chief held Peter’s and Wendy’s hands together and threw flower petals over them. Tinkerbell had a special surprise for the couple; she and a few fairy friends had traveled to London to search for any trace of Peter’s parents. Somehow they had found in the house they once lived in, an old box of letters and jewels and scrolls. It took three fairies to bring it to Neverland but they had found Peter’s mother’s wedding band. They had shrunk it to fit and Peter blinked back tears as he slid it onto Wendy’s finger. The Chief presented the couple to the crowd as “Peter and Wendy Pan, Prince and Princess of Neverland.” Wendy knew that after this night, they would be leaving Neverland for good. She watched her new husband while he danced with the twins, thinking of the very first time she saw him, sailing through her bedroom window. She started thinking about their journey together, how it had all started and the first time he told her he loved her. Of course that meant thinking of the horror they had faced on the Jolly Roger but Wendy quickly shoved those thoughts out of her head. She felt someone sit down beside her and slipped her hand into John’s hand. He squeezed it and leaned in closer.
“Someday you’ll tell me what happened?” She didn’t answer immediately. How could she tell him what all they had been through? She knew he was her brother but she didn’t know if she’d ever be able to tell him everything. “Perhaps one day. But tonight I’d like to forget it all and focus on the ceremony. Can you believe your sister is actually married?” “And a mother. Our own parents are not going to like it, Wendy, you are much too young.” Wendy bit her lip; she had almost forgotten what her parents would say about it all. How could she tell them too? She would never be able to look into her father’s eyes and tell him his little girl had been raped a number of times. She sighed and lowered her head onto her brother’s shoulder. “They will just have to understand I have changed. Time has changed me and I don’t even know who that little girl is anymore. I feel like the moment we leave Neverland, Peter and I will spring up into adults because of what all we have been through. I haven’t felt like a child in ages.” “No doubt you’ve matured, my dearest sister, and emotionally you may be an adult. But you still look like a young girl. Just remember that when you come home.” John patted her hand and went to talk to Tiger Lily, leaving Wendy alone with her thoughts. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
