The scenery melted away around us as we rode, pushing the horses as hard as we dared. We knew the Urgals were still gaining on us, but we couldn't fathom how. It seemed that for every stride of our mounts, our pursuers took three. The trees became thicker and thicker the farther we went. Soon enough, Eragon and Saphira, who were flying above us, were completely lost to sight. Eragon was still doggedly searching for an alternate route through which Murtagh could make his escape, but the older boy knew better; he was with us whether he liked it or not. And he really didn't like it.
There was little time for further conversation, we were so focused on just trying to stay in our saddles.
"Hold up a second," Murtagh said, pulling back on his reins. He sat very still in his saddle and looked at the sparse path behind us.
"What is it?" I asked, drawing even with him and following his gaze. My question was soon answered as the ground shook beneath the horses' hooves, accompanied by a massive thud.
"Yes, that would be the question," he said grimly, turning to me. "We have to run from here, it's too close. I don't want to risk being knocked from my saddle by a low limb." He swung down from his saddle, and I hesitated.
"What is it?" Murtagh looked at me expectantly. "Your horse is about to drop, and I would rather you not be riding when she does."
Minna shook her head and snorted. Her sides were heaving under me. "I don't think I can keep up with you without her. I have the options of my horse dying from exhaustion, slowing us down and getting us all killed, or getting left behind and likely taken back to Uru'Baen. I really don't like any of those." Another loud thud, closer this time, had me halfway out of my saddle. My cloak swung open and Murtagh inhaled sharply.
He pushed me back into the saddle. "No. I can't let anything happen to you. If the worst thing to happen is you lose your horse, I will gladly buy you a new one first chance I get. I made you a promise, and I intend to keep it."
He grabbed the reins of all three horses and started running. I gathered a small amount of energy and pushed it into Murtagh and the horses. Hopefully it was enough to keep us alive.
Night came quickly in the valley. Mere minutes after the sun went down, it was so dark we almost couldn't see anything. I almost screamed in fright when Eragon materialized next to Murtagh. The young men exchanged words I couldn't make out and Murtagh drew to a halt so fast I was almost knocked from my saddle.
"You knew." The accusation from Murtagh had Eragon looking nervous. "You knew there was no way out of here and yet you still dragged me in with you."
"Can we discuss this later?"
"No, we are discussing this now. You dragged me in here on purpose. You don't want me to leave!" Murtagh took a step closer to his companion.
"No, Murtagh, I promise you! I thought there was a way out! There still might be!"
"Don't lie to me, Rider!" Murtagh took another threatening step toward the other boy.
"What is your problem anyway? The Varden can help if you just give them a chance!"
"I don't have a problem with them, it's their problem. My father was Morzan!"
There was a very pregnant pause. The men stared at each other for a long moment. Finally, I cleared my throat.
"I hate to break this up, but there are still Urgals behind us." At that moment, a horn sounded. It was close. The sound caused us all to jump and in one motion, we started to run again. I stooped as low to Minna's neck as I could. My belly was quite swollen now, which made it very difficult to do much of anything any more. Before long, the roar of the waterfal reached our ears, giving us all an extra spurt of energy.
We spilled out of the tree line and onto the edge of the lake. We had made it. Now, just to find the entrance. I dismounted and took Minna's reins from Murtagh and we picked our way around the lakebed. Murtagh shouted a warning and Eragon and I spun quickly to see the Urgals bursting through the trees. I slipped on the slick stones and fell, landing with a splash in the freezing water. Murtagh grabbed my arm and pulled me back to my feet, shoving me in front of him.
"Run, Princess!" He shouted as the Urgals surrounded us. "Get to the falls! Quickly!"
I scrambled to obey as Saphira appeared and launched herself at a large group, tearing them apart. We raced up the rocky beach as the dragon kept the advancing creatures at bay, gaining us valuable time. Eragon shouted something in the Ancient language as we reached the falls. Nothing happened. He shouted again. Still nothing. My heart sank and I looked back. The Urgals were right behind us. Murtagh thrust his sword at one, and the fight was on. I launched spells at them as quickly as I could, and Eragon fought with blade and magic alike.
"What do we do now?" I gasped as I tossed a fireball at a large group terrorizing Saphira.
"We are on the wrong side, we have to go through the falls to get to the other bank," Eragon grunted as he swung his sword at an advancing Urgal. "Saphira can take Arya across and the horses can swim with us."
"You've gone mad," I gasped. "We'll be killed!"
"We have no choice. It's the only way." With that, he transferred the unconcious elf to the dragon's back. Saphira took off and landed on the opposite bank. The horses followed, with a little prodding, and Murtagh jumped in after them. "Come on, us next."
He took my hand. HIis was warm, and rough from years of hard work. The silver skin in the center of his palm was smooth and strangely cool. Warmth spread from our joined hands all through my body. I felt my cheeks heat. He looked into my eyes for a moment, then turned and jumped into the lake, pulling me with him. His grip tightened as we fought across the current.
Suddenly, his hand was ripped from mine. I surfaced briefly, but was pushed back under just as quickly. I could barely make out the shapes of people pulling Eragon and Murtagh from the lake. I surfaced a second time. Eragon was fighting the man holding him, reaching his hand toward me. I could hear him and Murtagh both shouting my name. The pounding water pushed me back under and my heart raced. I fought the torrent of water as hard as I could, but my arms were tired and heavy, my lungs were on fire. The edges of my vision was turning black, and my thrashing limbs slowed. I could feel myself sinking farther into the water.
A hand suddenly grabbed my wrist and yanked me upward. The hand holding me dragged me, coughing and sputtering, out of the water. Eragon was still shouting my name.
"Come along, lassie," a gruff voice said, hoisting me to my feet and into a cave. "Plenty of time to rest inside, let's go."
We were completely surrounded my men and dwarves alike. We had finally reached the Varden. But some of the looks we were getting didn't make me feel any safer.
Author's Notes:
Hey, readers, thanks for bearing with me in my long absence. I lost my notebook I had been writing in at work and didn't feel like starting over. Lucky for me, my husband found it under the couch (go figure lol) and here we are :) I aim to get at least one, maybe two more chapters up tonight, or in the next couple days. I have three days off from work, so we will see where they take me.
I realized as I was writing this, that I am following the books uncomfortably close, so I am going to have to revise a little and deviate from the story line. A lot. So bear with me there too please. As much as I like my story, I don't like the plot line, because as it stands, I am basically rewriting the books and that could end badly. So I am going to go back through and edit during the next few days and go from there.
As always, thanks for reading, and reviews are appreciated :)
