Taylor had loaded our luggage and the stroller into the car. Ana had the diaper bag ready to go, and I had my briefcase near the door.
“Ana, we have to go!” I called. Ana came down the steps holding Teddy. “Okay, I think we have everything.” “I think so, too, and anything we’ve missed we can buy when we get there.” We didn’t want to travel too far on Teddy’s first airplane trip, so we were staying at a resort in San Diego. I just wanted us all to get some sunshine and relaxation. “Taylor’s got the car seat all set up. I can put him in.” “Okay. I’ve got to grab his bottle from the fridge.” I headed out with the baby and got him settled into the back seat. Ana hugged Gail goodbye and came out. We drove to the airport and headed straight for the tarmac where the GEH jet awaited. Taylor loaded up our luggage. I lifted Teddy and the car seat out and helped Ana onto the plane. “See you in a few days, Taylor.” We sat Teddy in between us on the airplane and kept him in his seat until we took off and it was safe to walk around. “Teddy Grey, you’re on an airplane!” I lifted my son onto my lap. Ana beamed at him, and he cooed back at both of us. I couldn’t believe he was already six months old. He was much sturdier and less breakable than a few months ago, and very playful and giggly. “We make very cute babies, Mrs. Grey.” I looked over at Ana and took her hand. “Maybe we’ll have to make a few more.” I squeezed her hand. That was a discussion for another day. I looked out the window at the wispy clouds going by. “Our first family vacation.” Teddy began to pout, and Ana pulled out his bottle. “You want your ba-ba, little one?” We managed to get a bib on him, and I gave him his bottle. He settled down in my arms, content with his milk, holding onto the bottle with both hands around mine. “He’s some lucky kid, going on a private jet at six months old,” Ana remarked. “I’m the lucky one to have you two.” I kissed his forehead. Teddy fell asleep after his lunch, and I placed him back in his seat. My wife and I were completely content gazing at our son for the remainder of the flight. Before the captain could announce that we were making our descent, Teddy awoke and started wailing. “Oh, hon, I think his ears must hurt him!” Ana said worriedly. “Hmm, yes, mine are popping a bit. I think we should give him his bottle to suck on. That should clear his ears.” Ana retrieved the bottle once again and gave it to the baby. This calmed him down a bit, but he still didn’t look too thrilled. “Almost there, baby. That’s a good boy.” I rubbed his chubby stomach soothingly. Finally, we landed. I carried the car seat down the steps of the plane, following after Ana. We popped the stroller open and got Teddy settled, and our luggage was moved from the plane to our awaiting private car to the hotel. The hotel was modern and ultra luxe. We were led up to a suite and found a crib waiting in the sitting room. Ana changed the baby and got him dressed for dinner in a cute little outfit that screamed ‘my first vacation.’ We decided to have an early dinner after a long day of traveling, get Teddy to bed, and call it a night. Everyone in the restaurant ogled over the baby as they passed by. He was sitting up like such a big boy in his high chair. We made it through dinner with a pretty well-behaved child. The diaper bag was stuffed with toys, but mostly Teddy was happy when he had a bottle in his mouth. We strolled around the hotel after dinner, taking in the exotic gardens, the grand lobby, and the multiple pools lit up at night. “I’m excited to take Teddy swimming tomorrow!” Ana exclaimed. “Well, don’t get your hopes up, baby. He doesn’t seem to be the biggest fan of water so far.” “Well, maybe when Daddy gets in with him, he’ll like it!” “Maybe Mommy should come in, too.” When did we become this couple, calling each other Mommy and Daddy, referring to ourselves in the third person? I cringed realizing that I kind of liked it. Teddy yawned in his stroller. “Our little boy had a big day today on the airplane. Let’s get you to bed.” We stopped at the elevator and went up to our room. Ana gave Teddy his final bedtime bottle, and I hummed a lullaby and stroked his cheek. He was sound asleep in his crib in no time. Ana and I climbed into our own bed and flipped on the TV very quietly. My wife laid her head on my chest, and I pulled her close. “All I want you to do here is relax, my love. You deserve a vacation.” “Mmm, will do.” She snuggled closer to me, and I saw her eyes begin to flutter every minute or two. “Sleep, baby girl.” “It’s our first night of vacation. We’re s’posed to…” Ana mumbled. “We have lots more time for that. Tonight, you sleep.” I turned off the TV and the room went black. “Goodnight, Mrs. Grey.” In the middle of the night, I heard Teddy stirring in his crib. I slinked out of bed to grab him before he started crying. “Teddy, what’s wrong?” I whispered. He had been doing amazing with sleeping through the night at home. I lifted him up and quickly changed his diaper. “Do you miss sleeping in your own bed? I’m not that comfortable sleeping away from home, either.” I carried my son back to bed with me. One night of sleeping in our bed wouldn’t spoil him too much, right? I laid the baby on my bare chest, stroking his copper wisps of hair, my lips to his forehead. It still sort of amazed me that I had gone without touch (in certain areas, anyway) for so long, but with my family it was all easy. Cradling my son to my chest, having his skin touch my scars, seemed to be the most natural thing in the world. I could barely think otherwise. I awoke a few hours later with Ana cuddled up close, her hand on the baby’s back. She looked so peaceful; they both did. Once light started streaming into the room, Teddy opened his eyes, and Ana soon followed. “Good morning, love.” “We have a little boy in our bed,” she whispered. “Yes, a little visitor came in the middle of the night. We Grey men prefer our own beds at home.” “Only you would prefer your own bed to a luxurious suite at a five star resort, Mr. Grey.” “I prefer any bed that you are in, Mrs. Grey.” We got Teddy dressed in his vacation gear- swim diaper, bathing suit, and bucket hat. I put on a pair of swim trunks myself, and Ana put on a black one-piece. We loaded all of our gear- sunscreen, diaper bag, baby floatation device- into the stroller and made our way down to breakfast. After we ate, I had a pool boy set up some chairs for us in the shade where Teddy would be protected from the sun. Ana put some baby sunscreen on Ted and let him take his morning nap in his stroller under the umbrella. I had Ana sit down in front of me so I could lotion her back. “I like your bathing suit, baby.” “Yeah, it covers all the bad spots.” Ana laughed. I turned her around to face me and put a hand on her cheek. “You do not have one bad spot on your body, Anastasia Grey.” “Well, you know what I mean. I still have baby fat that’s not bikini-ready.” “You could wear whatever you want to, but to be honest I much prefer this one-piece. Only I get to know the sexiness that lies underneath, plus I don’t have to worry about you going topless again.” Ana pouted. “That was one mistake! Are you ever going to let me live it down?! Besides, going topless in Europe is very different from going topless in San Diego.” Ana giggled into my chest. “Point well-made, Mrs. Grey.” I turned her back around to finish lotioning her up. When I was done, I lifted her ponytail and kissed her neck. “You really are so beautiful.” She leaned back into me, and we rested on the chair next to our son, her back to my front. Teddy popped one eye open under his hat. “Did you have a nice nap, Teddy bear?” Ana stood up to retrieve Teddy. “Christian, let’s take him for a swim!” “Ana, I don’t know. He’s so little to go in the pool.” “Christian, we are not going to take our hands off of him! He’ll be fine.” All I wanted in this life was to keep my family safe, but having a baby, there always seemed to be new firsts, unknown possibilities, around every corner. I hated the unknown. “You blow up his floaty,” Ana directed. “Oh, but Mrs. Grey, you really are so much better when it comes to blowing.” “Christian Grey!” I laughed and got the little baby float ready to go. We left our shoes at our seats and made our way into the pool. “Ana, I think it’s too cold for the baby,” I said as I waded into the water. “Baby, he’ll be okay. Let’s try.” I sighed and went in further until my bathing suit was covered. Ana followed with Teddy in her arms. She let his little toes dip in gently. I waited for his bath-time-like screams but none came. “Why don’t you take him, Daddy?” I hesitated. “Come here, little one.” I took Teddy in my arms and held him close to my chest. I let his legs go under water, and he looked at me with big gray eyes. “You want to go in your float, Teddy bear?” Ana held it steady as I eased his legs into the little holes. He was all settled in, his bottom half fully submerged in the water, his top half protected by the canopy. “I can’t believe he likes it!” “I told you, Christian!” “Let’s take him for a little ride.” I had two hands on the float as I spun it around gently, making little waves in the water. Teddy giggled happily as we went faster. Ana kissed my back and climbed on with her hands around my neck. I took my family for a little ride in the pool, Teddy kicking his legs as we moved while Ana and I made funny faces and talked to him the whole time. He looked back at us with the biggest smile on his face. “Okay, let’s get out before he gets cold,” Ana said, and climbed off my back. “Wait until I get him a towel!” She went back to our chairs and held out a towel for us. I pulled Teddy out of the float and carried him out into Ana’s waiting arms. She wrapped him up, keeping him warm. I dried off in a towel, too, and sat down in my lounge chair. “Here you go.” Ana put the wet baby on my chest, and I covered us both with his towel and wrapped my arms around him. I woke up an hour later with a sleeping baby on my chest. I kissed his head and looked over to where my wife was reading a magazine. “Hi,” I whispered. “Hi, cute stuff,” Ana replied, putting her sunglasses on her head. She definitely seemed more relaxed here already. “You and your son are quite adorable.” She nodded to the sleeping baby. “Eh, he’s just all right,” I joked, glancing down at the cutest baby this world has ever seen. “I ordered us some lunch. It should be here in a few minutes.” “Thanks, love.” Ana changed the baby when he woke up and put him in his stroller so we could eat. After our lunch, I gave him a bottle, and we took a walk around the hotel. “I’m going to take Teddy back in the pool again,” I told Ana. “Really?” “Yeah, he liked it!” I loved the way my son had giggled and splashed in the water. “Okay, babe, just get some more lotion on him.” I laid the baby down on the lounge chair in front of me and gently rubbed lotion on his chubby cheeks, little nose, ears, and arms before carrying him into the water. “You don’t want his float?” Ana called. “Nah, we’re okay.” I just wanted to hold him close and take him for a spin. I dangled Teddy’s legs in the water once again, letting him get used to it. Then I put both hands under his little arms and spun him around, letting the water graze his toes as we spun. He gave me that big giggle again, and I kissed his cheek. We waded in further. I draped the baby’s legs around me and had my hands behind his head and back, talking to him. “Do you like swimming with Daddy, Teddy? Who knew you actually like water after all? Silly boy.” I kissed his tummy, and he babbled back to me. Ana called to us from the side of the pool where she waited with a camera. “Just a few pictures, Christian!” Teddy and I posed in the water. “Wave to Mommy!” I told him. Ana put the camera back in her bag and came to sit on the edge with her legs in the water. “Let’s go say hi to Mommy.” I waded over to where she was. “Hi, little boy!” Ana cooed. I stood up to kiss her and put the baby on her lap. I swam away, immersing my whole body in the water. I circled my way back to them, staying in the water until the last moment. “Where’s Daddy?” I heard Ana ask Teddy. “Peekaboo!” I popped up, earning a big laugh from Teddy. “There he is!” I went back under the water again. “Where’s Daddy?” I popped back up. “There he is!” Ana helped Teddy clap his pudgy hands together and kissed his cheek. “Here I am!” I kissed him, too. Ana met me by the steps of the pool, baby on her hip and towel in her hand. She helped dry off my hair as I got out. She sat down on her chair with Teddy. I joined them on the edge of the seat. Teddy was playing with a pool toy. “He’s at such a great age right now. I love making him laugh.” “I know. He’s amazing.” Ana sighed. “He’s so big, though! I already miss him being that little bundle that I used to nurse.” I had felt the last few weeks like a conversation was coming about having more kids. I knew we’d have more, but I just wasn’t ready yet. “I know, baby,” was all I replied for now. Later that day, we returned to our room to get showered and ready for dinner. We gave Teddy a bath to get rid of the chlorine, and dressed him up in his little plaid shorts. We walked down the beach to an ice cream stand after dinner. “One vanilla cone.” I paid and got the soft serve. “Just one?” Ana asked. “Thought it’d be fun to share,” I said, offering it to her to take a lick. “Mmm, vanilla.” Ana licked her delectable lips. “Love the vanilla with you, Mrs. Grey.” I took a lick myself. Ana leaned up to kiss me, sucking off the dripping ice cream. We sat on a bench and finished our dessert. We went upstairs and got Teddy ready for bed. “I hope he sleeps through the night this time,” Ana said. “I think he will. All the sun and pool time probably knocked him out.” We both kissed the baby goodnight and headed into our bedroom. “Well, it didn’t knock me out. Tonight I’m wide awake.” Ana draped her arms around my neck. “Very happy to hear that, Mrs. Grey,” I replied, lifting her onto the bed. We made out like high schoolers before I undressed her. I nuzzled my nose from her neck, to between her breasts, to her stomach. “So beautiful.” I left kisses all around her belly button. “What are you doing, Christian?” “Ana, it made me upset that you aren’t comfortable with some parts of your body. I love every inch of you.” My wife squirmed uncomfortably beneath me. “Anastasia. You have always loved every one of my scars, and now I love yours, too.” I kissed all along the line of her C-section. “Christian.” I looked up and saw tears welling in my wife’s eyes. I moved up the bed to take her in my arms. “No, no, Ana, don’t cry.” I kissed away her tears and held her. “I’m sorry. I’m getting emotional for no reason.” “You can get emotional whenever you want. It’s not good to hold your feelings in. I should know.” I smiled, hoping to make her laugh. She gave me a small smile in return. “I guess I just look down at my stomach and feel ugly… I miss that feeling of you kissing my pregnant belly. Those days were amazing. Now you’re just kissing flab…” More tears streamed silently down her face, and my heart broke. “Baby. What can I do? I want to help. I will never stop kissing any part of you!” I nuzzled my nose into her neck. “I don’t know, Christian. I think I just have to come to terms with the fact that my body changed and probably won’t be the same again.” I looked into her tear-stained eyes. “You carried our baby inside of you. You changed us both forever, and it’s a wonderful thing! You Are So Gorgeous.” We were nose-to-nose. “Thank you, Christian.” Ana kissed me. “Anytime, my love.” Ana molded herself to me, and I could feel the wetness of her tears on my chest. I pulled the covers around our naked bodies and held my wife close as we drifted off to sleep.
